  • Gear upgrade complete! Now that we've upgraded the 8.2 Pontiac rear end with an Eaton Posi unit and a 3.36 rear gear she's going to hook and book a whole lot better... unfortunately that means we need ALL we can get out of these 4 wheel drum brakes! So wheels coming off and lets get these things as good as we can get them.
On our best pass at National trails this car trapped at about 102 mph in the quarter mile, that's spinning a LOT, with a HORRIBLE 2.9 60 foot, and the less than exciting 2.78 rear gear. With the upgrades we should be picking up quite a bit in mile per hour so our already slighty sketchy brakes just won't do. Though the drag strip at Sikeston is an 1/8th mile it also has a shorter shut down so... let's go all in on a 4 wheel drum brake rebuild! Who doesn't love a drum break brake job?
Huge thanks as always to all our subscribers, followers, fans, and customers who have made our business successful and gotten our channel to where it is today. Special thanks to the SRC / Street Racing Channel / SRC Garage / Old Man's Garage / Junkyard Digs folks for showing such amazing support for us over the past several months. Without all of you we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are today. We hope you enjoy this one!

Brakes work as well as the burnout setting!

Probably could use a BIT more braking and/or line lock for those kinds of shenanigans again ;)

I like the idea of cutting brake drums equally, good idea. As far as lubing the contact points I always used to say "lube belongs where it needs to be, not all over." Same thing when I'd build an engine, "Oil goes where it needs to be, not all over." An old friend of mine liked to Dunk a piston in a bucket of oil and then slam it in, I Cringed! 🤥

I always take a ROLLOC bristle brush to the axle and drum surfaces to make sure it’s clean because if there’s any rust I’ve seen wheels come off when that rust works it’s way out. A near by pep boys had a lawsuit from not cleaning rust off

Have you guys thought about switching it over to disc breaks might help slowing that beast down if you can switch it over

My mom and dad had a 64 Gran Prix, drums all around and I remember him doing brakes and my brother took it to Lyons drag strip a few times without telling my parents, my mom said the brakes were not working very good one day, dad took it apart and all the shoes were glazed, being my mom only drove a few miles to work he asked my brother what he had been doing, he only drove it a few time's and only on Saturday😅😅😅 He confessed and dad just asked, how did you do.

I think I have more experience doing brake shoe replacement, glad I'm retired, now :) for me i put star adjuster and the spring that hold the bottom of the shoes together then put that assembly on the wheel cylinder pushouts then push retaining pins thru and lock them on. also long shoe in front on hubs with the anchor pin up top wheel cylinder on bottom.

60 miles east of me. I'm in Poplar Bluff, wish I could make it over and meet and look over the car but I am a disabled veteran and don't get out much.

Those front drums are off of something else, they look like they're missing some cooling fins/thermal mass compared to the correct drum. Could be part of why the front shoes were so cooked (I have a 4 wheel drum 70 Tempest)

I have replaced front calipers prop valve master booster converted to 79 cadillac rear disc brakes and it stops well just feels slow to respond.
