Old Man's Garage Malibu needs rear gears... AGAIN!? Massive headaches ensue!

  • Poor little Chevy 10 bolt, you have no idea what life has in store for you. The first part of your life you just cruised to the grocery store, maybe to church, occasionally taking the grand kids for ice cream... the next chapter of your life with THE Old Man's Garage is going to be considerably more fun, and athletic.
So a few weeks ago you all likely saw us put a brand new rear end gear in Bill's 1979 Chevy Malibu Classic. This low mileage survivor car was now sporting a fresh 350 small block Chevy under the hood, a 700R4 transmission and factory highway gears and open differential just wouldn't cut it. Unfortunately after upgrading those gears to a new "budget friendly" 3.73 gear set... bad things happened when the boys repeatedly mashed the Go Baby Go button shoving a few 150 shot doses of nitrous though it. Back to our shop it went to get a more stout set of Richmond 4.11 gears, and all new hardware.
However as you'll quickly see in this video even a simple "take one out, put one in" can go sideways as parts challenges mount and we deal with fitment challenge after fitment challenge. In the end we keep at it until we win and this ride is ready for some fun... AFTER a somewhat gentle break in cycle we can hope! The former SRC / Street Racing Channel / SRC Garage machine is likely going to see some Street Racing of it's own, or at least some bracket racing. Knowing these boys as we do... our money is on BOTH.
We always want to make sure to thank every single one of our viewers, followers, supporters, and subscribers that have made this channel so successful over the past two years. Without all of you cheering us on and encouraging us to keep sharing what we do we would just be talking to ourselves in another dark corner of the internet! So huge huge HUGE thank you to each and every one of you!

Great video per usual, I feel like setting up rear ends is an art. As a 4th gen F body owner I know the feeling of having a sub par 10 bolt in the car, as that is the whole story line of every F body chat. I upgraded to an 8.8 that I cut the ends off the 10 bolt and had them fabricated to the 8.8 center section. I know Bill is usually in time crunch but a properly setup 8.8 would be perfect for that car and would reduce parasitic drivetrain loss from the 9". I sure hope when he yeets that 10 bolt at the line in the near future A. its on video and B. that he saves some of the pieces for you to hang on the wall for your efforts in trying to preserve it TWICE.

Shows the EXTREME value of a great parts guy.
Rebuilt the driveline on 57 C10 PU and used the Chevrolet approved U joint for the driveshaft. The guy assembling everything says: "This thing has at least 50 thou slop in the length of the U joint"
Back to the parts counter at the Chevy dealer to figure out the issue and the guy comes up with the same number. An old guy in the back hollers out: "Is that part number such and such?" and the counter man says yes. OG then replies: "The book is wrong on that one", and calls out (from memory) the specific part number that WILL fit. Sure enough, we measured both before I left and the correct part was .045 bigger than the listed part number.

i'm old and built over 1000 rears in the last 50 years still building em because i love it .... i set up Zoom gears (made in 3 different countries) also , Getz, Franklin, ,Schiefer, Richmond' OEM , Strange, Perfection, Ohio ,Dana /Spicer-SVL, Motive, Nitro gears and probably a few i no longer remember in street, circle track, drag race from blown alky cars on down to stockers ...on a 7.5/ 7.625 rear .i'd have started with a '030 and patterened em with a toe bias on the teeth a few spots around the ring gear .... i have a pinion setter and a case spreader but rarely use em .. hot rod gear ratio 8620 gears always have a toe biased drive side .. the theory is the pattern moves under a heavy load and the pattern moves to the center .. set up oem style the pattern set in the tooth center would run off the heel .. the best oil for an extreme loaded gearset is RED LINE heavy shock proof oil .. it's synthetic climbing oil and has the film strength of a 250 weight without the viscosity . it looks like thick red tomato soup . i always kept a case at my speed shop .. with Englishtown (R.I.P.) being 20 minutes away and Island, Atco , East Windsor ( R.I.P.) , Wall, and New Egypt not too far either my stick and trans brake customers wouldn't use anything else after my recommendation .. 20 some years ago i first tried it in a friend's 12 bolt with 5:86 gears .. the car was a SS/L '66 Chevy II with a Jerico 4 speed sidestepping the clutch at 11500 rpm .. i also tried it in the former Tony Feil / Dave Hughes '62 Vette my friend began running in A/MP with a tunnel rammed 366 big block with a Liberty Chrysler 4 speed and a 6:17 Dana 60 with 15/33 w slicks .. both cars had the same results .. the oil was good enough to go from 3 ring and pinion sets a season to 1 .. you can see a couple bottles in my profile pic .. ( btw .. never use gears from India).. that's my memory dump for the night.. good luck Mr. Lucore !

Glad I found your channel, enjoy your skills and honesty.
There are several well built case spreaders available less than $200. They make removal of the differential easy when you spread the case .015, but more importantly it is the only way to preload new carrier bearings.
You can’t hammer in that much shim without spreading the case.
Assembled without one when the new bearings break in the carrier is loose and failure is next.
I did it without for years. It appears you have all the other tools, I assume you have the clamshell bearing remover because you were swapping shims without hurting the inner bearing. And obviously you have a depth gauge and plenty of knowledge.
    Keep up the excellent work!

Thank you for the kind words. We are a student of the process.... We are always learning better ways to do things. I was actually taught how to set side bearing pre-load with out a case spreader at a GM school. I have a case spreader that I use from time to time, but I have gotten used to doing it in an unconventional way. The Pinion depth gauge is a tool I have recently purchased and will be using on the road forward. Soooooo much better than musical shims, and it gives a validated finish. This test drive was perfect.

Mr. Mark, the rock star of auto parts. How did the AMX rear hold up after Kenny`s romp in it? Asking cause he tore up Bill`s. Everybody makes mistakes, but some mechanics never own them. You do, much respect.

The AMX is strong as ever, if you didn't see it the video right before this on our channel is the AMX on the dyno right after we got it back. You can still see the dust and dirt on the sides of it from the "test drive".
We are human and try to be honest about the wins AND the losses. No need to hide them just admit, learn, and move on. Quality control on parts.... whoa that's a whole other series of videos we could do

New parts in order of appearance-air filter, plugs, map sensor, pcv valve, iac valve, injectors, O2 sensors. Money light still on. Just to start off with I'm here because of you all the fact that the old man's Malibu is there is nothing more than a added bonus. I've turned wrenches since the mid 70s until my accident in o7 that left me disabled and I can a honest hard working mechanic from a dishonest one, unfortunately I've met to many dishonest ones and when they open their mouth is when the lies start and they don't think I know anything about turning wrenches and sometimes I get so tired of all the lies when I get ready to leave I look them in the eyes and tell them that I have forgotten more about working on vehicles than they will ever know and walk out and leave, your a very smart tech and that's why I watch your channel. For anyone that says they have not made a mistake in this business their lieing to everyone and their the ones I won't let them work on my vehicles. God bless you guys and as always be safe 👍

Talk Bill into putting some directional tips on those mufflers at least, I can't imagine that extra heat is doing that overworked axle any good.
Great work as usual, sometimes its easy to overthink things and forget the tools you have on hand to help out.

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Some turn down tips kicked to the outside would be excellent to get the heat off that rear end for sure. Not sure it's a contributing factor to the failure... but "pre heating" it probably didn't help!
And yes... sometimes you forget the specialty tool you have on hand to do SPECIFICALLY this... and you waste 7 hours 🙄
