Bilstein 5160 Reservoir Shocks

  • This is an installation and review of the Bilstein 5160 that I replaced the factory Rancho's that GM puts on the Z71. Here are links to all of the products used in this installation:
    Bilstein 5160’s: imp.i128439.net/e4ggPD
    Bilstein Reservoir Mounts: amzn.to/2Ce5kH9
    Tekton Torque Wrench: amzn.to/2st0bvs
    Flir One Thermal Imaging Camera: amzn.to/2ECodc7
    I went with the 5160's over the 5100's due to the Chevy Shake issue and I really wanted to be sure I could rule out shocks as a component so I went one step further.

    You did a great job with this TH-cam video. The drone view of the washboard AZ road, side by side comparison of the original versus new shocks in operation, FLIR data and the replacement procedure...WOW!. I just drove down a washboard AZ road tonight in a 1996 GMC Z71 Sierra and thought it was going to shake the fillings out of my teeth. I always wondered if I should replace the factory shocks with something better. You answered my question. Thanks!

    Great informative video! Do you think these would help if towing a small travel trailer with my Tacoma?

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bary Thompson thanks Barry!! They would help over stock shocks when it comes to heat dissipation. It wouldn’t really give you anymore towing capacity but would keep the shocks cooler which should help keep the rear end more composed.

  • @jewllake
    @jewllake 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My stock shocks were terrible. After hitting a bump all 180lbs of me would fly out of the seat and hit the headliner. I used Bilstein 5100 in the front and rear; night and day difference!

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kason Frigetto appreciate the constructive criticism. Also. “bilshtine” is the appropriate pronunciation. It’s like getting mad at someone for saying Porshuh instead of Porsh for Porsche. Hi there, I have 2017 GMC Sierra all terrain x and I want to make my ride smoother. Truck tends to go sideways on bumps so putting Bilstein can prevent that.. ride is stiffer with rancho and I can feel every bump on the road while driving. I never drove Denali , does magnetic shocks gives a smoother rides.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the magnetic ride is probably best but the Bilsteins are incredibly good at keeping the truck from going sideways on bumps.

    I just ordered these and the 6112 (new model 6112 that starts at 1.85") for my 18.
    Question. (I'm sure the packaging will tell me.) But GM rear shocks are typically mounted shaft up, shock body down.
    I've noticed you and many other folks mount these 5160s body up, shaft down. Is that intentional because it's bilsteins specified? Or is it something you tested and determined was better?
    Just curious before I tackle my install. Though admittedly, rears are easy haha.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have never tried to fox shocks but I would think the reservoir 5160 will be better than a non-reservoir of a competing brand. I think the Fox 2.0 is just a bit of an upgraded standard shock but wont have the same cooling capability of the reservoir shocks. This is just my opinion since I am not a suspension pro.

      I havent ever run the 5100’s but the added oil reservoir of the 5160’s certainly help them run cooler and would lead to better performance. If price is a big deal for you I think the 5100’s are fine but for me, when I do these kinds of projects I always spend a little more since I am already making the time and effort to do the work.

      A S I don’t think shock facing front or back is a thing but I could be wrong. As long as the fittings are clear of obstruction and the hoses are clear I don’t see how that makes a difference. Theoretically I could see bolts being an issue as they are angled and if the nut backed off the bolt could drop out vs the other way the bolt would possibly stay in (could still walk out). The directions I had didn’t mention facing shocks in any specific directions.
