    Alt History: Germans win "Battle of Moscow"
    The German army plan for the attack on Moscow was dubbed Operation Typhoon.
    The Moscow offensive starts with the Soviets reeling. The Luftwaffe has achieved complete air superiority in the Moscow area and hinders Soviet road movement. Bombers gradually pulverize the extensive anti-aircraft defenses of Moscow while fighters strafe roads at will. The Stuka squadron makes four sorties per day shooting up anything that moves with their 37mm anti-tank guns. Soviet transport is only possible during the short night hours.
    The combined armies of Army Group Center attacked on the morning of June 2. They met fierce resistance, and took heavy casualties. The Waffen SS moved in to spearhead the attack, in order to limit Wehrmacht casualties. They did so, and managed to push a bit into Moscow, though were held back by the Soviet Air Force. The Luftwaffe and the Axis air forces had battled the Soviet Air Force earlier, but were unable to secure air superiority. Additional fighter units had been requested and sent to Moscow.
    Continued Advance
    The Germans then pushed into the city on 4 July. They were met with intense Soviet resistance, and though the Soviet air forces were busy engaging the Luftwaffe and thus were unable to aid the Soviet Army. The Germans and their allies pushed further into the city, beating back the Soviet 14th and 25th Armies. However, Zhukov unleashed a trap with the 45th Tank Army, which decimated the Axis left flank and opened a gap there. The Soviet 2nd Shock Army rushed into the gap, and the Germans had to patch it up, stalling them until 9 July. The advance continued afterwards, and by 14 July had conquered a third of the city. However, the Soviet forces were determined to hold their capital.
    Two Panzer Armees were sent around the flanks to surround the city and the spear heads meet and encircled the capital. Roughly 200,000 Soviet soldiers with 1200 tanks are surrounded with around 15 generals and Stalin himself.
    The rest of the government evacuated earlier and left to the Ural Mountains.
    With the encirclement complete Army Group North and Army Group B push towards the A-A line while Army Group Centre and South will capture the Soviet capital. The Soviet 14th Army defends the Kremlin, the fighting in the capital is fierce. The Soviets don't give up any ground without a lost. The Germans have numbers on their side, around 350,000 Germans with 5000 panzers and total air supremacy are assaulting the Soviet stronghold. On the flanks, Army Group North and B are making great progress. Many Russians are surrendering or retreating. The Army Groups reach their respective objectives on the 26th of September. Some minor Russian counter attacks are launched against Army Group North and are beaten off.
    The last desperate resistance in Moscow collapses. Tiger I tanks roar into Red Square and turn on the Kremlin. They provide cover fire for SS stormtroopers who assault the Kremlin with flame throwers and phosphorous grenades. The desperate defenders hold out for one heroic hour in savage hand-to-hand fighting
    The Soviet government in exile in the Urals is contemplating surrender and is willing to give up the Soviet capital and Stalin himself. Stalin learns of this and orders the deaths of all government officials, but there is no one willing to carry out the order since Stalin's most fanatical followers are in the capital with him.
    During the early hours of December 30, Zhukov informed Stalin in person that the defenders would probably exhaust their ammunition during the night. Stalin gave him the permission to attempt a breakout through the encircling German lines. The Red Army held onto the city for a month of close combat until the Axis overran there defenses.
    Army Group Centre and South now push towards the A-A line and reach their objectives on October 4th.
    Stalin is found dead outside the Kremlin
    At first the Germans thought suicide, but when the Germans demanded the Russian surrender and Stalin refused, a few of his own general's killed him and surrendered the capital to avoid more deaths.
    Soviet General Zkhukov and the last remnants of the Red Army was pushed back to the Ural Mountains and retreated northeast and southeast in the city of Ufa.
    After the fall of Moscow, the Germans have taken their positions on the A-A line envisioned by High Command. The Germans could easily over run the Ural mountains but Hitler desires not too. He believes everything east of the Urals is undesirable. The Germans keep all west of the A-A line.
    The Battle of Moscow was costly for both the Germans who suffered some 500,000 casualties and the Russians who took a tremendous loss of 1million+ dead.
    Hitler, Göring, Goebbels, Generalfeldmarschall Edhard Milch and an army of lesser dignitaries visit Moscow to attend the victory parade.
    In the evening, they attend the opera "Twilight of the Gods" conducted by Herbert von Karajan in the Bolshoi theater. The theatre has been damaged by shell fire but this lends flavor to the event. The performers are flown in from Berlin. Film Director Leni Riefenstahl makes a documentary about the performance that will be shown everywhere from the Imperial Palace in Tokyo to the White House in the United States.

    This goes against German blitzkrieg warfare where heavy tanks are suppose to be front line breakthrough units and light and medium tanks will just be the support of the breakthrough, aerial bombing of defenses and fortifications should be included in the plan, then the infantry would follow to support the tanks.

      Japek34 If Hitler had gone straight for Moscow after Guderian and Manstein captured Smolensk and opened the road to the capital for immediate attack, then the Germans probably would have taken the city. There were only about 45 thousand Soviet troops in Moscow in October and November 1941, because the Northern and Southern fronts badly needed reinforcements, plus they had to have large numbers of troops on the border with Japan in case they decided to invade in an attempt to help Hitler...which why they didn't is beyond me. Anyway, the importance of Operation Barbarossa was the heavy emphasis on a speedy war. The faster it could be won the better, because the Germans, chiefly Hitler, knew that above all the other raw materials Germany was severely lacking, oil was the most critical. If Germany found itself trapped in a war of attrition then it would lose the war, but Hitler gambled he could seize the economic and food producing lifelines of Russia to end the war rather than attacking Moscow head on, which in 1942 seemed to be the more reasonable choice. The capital was bristling with anti-tank guns, earth defenses, tank traps, mines, pillboxes, and many more types of formidable barriers in the path of Army Group Center that suggested to High Command that any direct attack on the city would ultimately be too costly in lives and armored vehicles and aircraft that would be needed for further eastern offensives deeper into Russia in the direction of the Urals.
      Hitler's decision to reject any surrender from the crucial cities of Leningrad and even Moscow had the Wehrmacht been successful in encircling the city, was another colossal mistake. Just as he had had the chance to catch Moscow almost completely undefended, the same situation served itself to Hitler on a silver platter in September 1941 as Army Group North made its way through the Batlic states towards the Karelian Isthmus and the vital port city of Leningrad. In late September, there were still only a Soviet presence of approximately 58-65 thousand troops stationed there along with sailors and a handful of ships belonging to the navy's Northern Fleet, these meager defenses combined with the fact that the Fins were bearing down on the city from the north at the same time could have been enough to break the resistance in perhaps a week at most with concentrated and coordinated efforts on both the north and south fronts.

    That is what wars is like back then? Nazis never made it to Moscow but they were cut short by 25-30 miles away from Moscow. Wars is a great loss of brave men but yet it has to be done mostly because of government who put them there in the first place. Dead soldiers, sailors, air men, the dreaded SS, or Marines will be told that he died a hero for his own country by the government who put him there in the first place. It's not the enemy who killed him but sometimes it is his leaders who gave him not enough to fight with.

      -The 1941 program that lead to the "Assault rifle" called the StG 44 (sometimes MP44) also had a predecessor the MP43. (Note the number is the year of acceptance into service) The MP43 was in fact the MKb 42(H) which fired the kurz/short round renamed to hide it from Hitler. The MKb 42(H) was an assault rifle and it was undergoing troop testing, with combat troops afaikt, in 1942. Had there not been in fighting and Hitler blocked the program the Germans could have had mass produced assault rifles by late 1942 or early 1943.
      -The combination of the MKb 42(H) and Panzerfaust 30 (and Panzerschrek) in 1943 would have been lethal. Once a Panzerfaust is fired in an ambush the troops need massive covering fire to escape and the MKb 42(H) assault rifle could have provided it.

    Even if the Germans had managed to capture Moscow it would’ve been of little consequence most likely the Soviet Government and military high command would’ve moved east word to Kazan. The war would continue since most of the Soviets industrial capacity has been moved east to areas such as range the Ural Mountains, Siberia, and Central Asia. Areas that are rich in natural resources as well as oil coming from the United States not to mention that the Soviets had also moved a lot of their manpower east as well plus the reserve troops kept in Siberia. The only thing it would accomplish would be stretching the German armies already exhausted supply lines even further. The war in the east would never be won by the Germans

    • @instrumentsofdestruction5737
      @instrumentsofdestruction5737 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Taking Moscow would have crippled the Soviet war effort. Stalin knew how important it was, or he would have abandoned it. If the Germans captured all land west of the Volga, they win. You don't have to fight Soviets to the Urals and beyond. As a far as trying to fight from Kazan, the Luftwaffe would bomb the Trans-Siberian railway. Now Red Army movement slows to a crawl. If Germans can hold Donbass and Kuban, they can camp on the western bank of the Volga and the Soviets eventually starve to death.

    • @gabrielkaplowitz596
      @gabrielkaplowitz596 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Instruments of Destruction you forget that there was a large soviet army in the East. The lend lease supplied fuel and equipment to the soviets. Plus the red army would be quick to launch a counter attack. With their backs to the wall with little to loose.

      @@gabrielkaplowitz596 It matters little how large the Soviet reserves can be mustered in Siberia if the infrastructure is terrible. They won't be able to maneuver. I could just imagine large, slow moving columns of barely trained recruits getting mowed down by Stukas flying out from Moscow. As for lend-lease, the Wallies could never have supplied enough food to keep the populace alive and still provide oil, trains, trucks, planes, telephone wire, etc, etc. There are only so many convoys. And if that wasn't enough problems, the Wallies are desperately hoping that the Japanese don't renege on their non-aggression pact with USSR because they could easily blockade Vladivostok which took in 50% of lend-lease at any time.

      @@instrumentsofdestruction5737 I think Germans simply had NOT enough soldiers to take Moscow. Despite it´s heavy losses Red Army had clearly superiority in front of Moscow. It was due the important knowledge of spy Sorge. Sorge informed Stalin that Japan don´t attack Russia, so Stalin could transform his troops from Siberia to protect Moscow. Besides that German had much more difficult task to do in November 1941 than in June 1941.Some German soldiers froze to death in front of Moscow, and some german weapons froze so Germans could not use all their weapons. It was so cold that a german private could stand on guard only 15 minutes,then came another private to change him. In same time russian weapons worked better than german's since russian had manufactured their weapons (psh-41, T-34, etc.) to withstand russian winter. Rudi Rafael

      @@jyrkikk Given the number of soldiers allocated to the Eastern Front in 1941, I agree Moscow couldn't be taken in 1941. They wasted too many soldiers garrisoning their previous conquests on a possible invasion that the Wallies were in no position to undertake. (Example: 7 divisions just guarding Norway in 1941) Now to speak on the 1942 campaign. If the Germans continue the drive on Moscow instead of pursuing Fall Blau in 1942, it is a near certainty they'll succeed in encircling it, followed by bombing and starving them into submission. After this, the Soviets will abandon all efforts to save Leningrad and concentrate on saving what's left of their industrial base south-east of Moscow. Without Moscow, the Red Army's capability quickly plummets due to logistics. In this situation, I would predict the Soviet government surrendering or collapsing by Summer '43 followed by an insurgency led by Russian holdouts.
