The Japanese air and sea power were basically exhausted by the US military, and its few resistance forces could only suppress the Soviet army for a while. 2. The resources and logistics of the Japanese army in the areas occupied by the East Asian continent have been blocked, and the Japanese army's weapon maintenance status will be worse than in the early stages of the Pacific War (even with new weapons). 3. The Soviet Union had just ended the war against Germany a few months ago, and its morale was extremely high, and a large number of soldiers had experience fighting Germany. At the same time, except for long-range artillery, the Japanese army’s lethal firepower was not as powerful as the German army’s, and the morale of the Japanese army was at a low level. Continuous defeats have made him extremely depressed and crazy. 4. The Soviet Union had experience in the Battle of Nomonhan and its march south to Northeast China to deal with the Kwantung Army, so the Soviet Army had countermeasures against the Japanese Army's Banzai Charge. 5. The video ignores that the Soviet army has air defense capabilities. Because the German Air Force was so powerful in the early stages of World War II, the Soviet army could have countermeasures against the Japanese air power. 6. The elite forces of the Japanese army have been exhausted in the Pacific. Most of them were fighting on the mainland with only a few elite troops, armored forces, regular soldiers, militiamen, and ordinary people who were forced to go to the battlefield. 7. The video ignores the possibility that the Soviets had combat groups with anti-tank rifles, mortars, cannons, and flamethrowers. 8. The video ignores the possibility that the Soviet Navy would send older battleships, light cruisers, and destroyers as fire support. 9. The video ignores the possibility of subsequent participation of Soviet self-propelled artillery, tank destroyers, Katyusha rocket launchers, and Spitfire tanks. 10. This operation may provide the Soviet army with a battlefield for their new weapons and new tactics, such as IS-3 heavy tanks, T-54 main battle tanks, and the Air Force's new jet fighters. Experience in training Soviet soldiers in landing operations and mountain operations. 11. This battle can also be regarded as the Soviet Union’s revenge for its defeat in the Russo-Japanese War. The Japanese army could deal with the Soviet army in a way that could prolong the war but not reverse the situation: 1. The Soviet army had no experience in landing operations, so the Japanese army could suppress the Soviet army's first attack in a short period. 2. The Japanese army is good at guerrilla warfare and harassment attacks. 3. Japanese Navy submarines used to block Soviet sea supply lines. (can't hold in long period). 4. The Japanese army used biological and chemical weapons (that would lead to strong retaliation). 5. Try to use intelligence warfare (the difference in combat power is too large, the intelligence is there but useless). 6. Let the few Japanese Navy ships engage the Soviet Navy ships. 7. Dig underground resistance fortifications (long-term resistance is available, but it is easy to be completely destroyed when discovered). Result: Unlike the video, the Japanese army's combat effectiveness could not withstand the Soviet army's long-term attack. The Japanese army's combat effectiveness was much worse than the Soviet army's combat effectiveness. Hokkaido would be completely occupied and become an important strategic location for the Soviet Union in the Pacific. The remaining Japanese resistance parties would be annihilated and become a base for the Japanese Communist Party. Japan will meet the same end as Germany.

Had it happened the casualty figures would have been horrendous when you consider the Japanese belief that death was preferable to surrender, especially when fighting on home ground, and the Soviet’s apparent disregard for casualties as long as the objective was achieved.

In real life, during the entire landing operation on the Japanese islands, Soviet losses were: 1567 killed and wounded. Japanese: 1018 killed and wounded, 50,442 prisoners. Forces of the parties: Soviet - about 9000 people Japanese - over 80,000 people
Although not in Hokkaido, the number of casualties from the Battle of Shumshu is estimated. In this battle, it is estimated that about 600 Japanese and 3,000 Soviet troops were killed.

Not all the troops had moved south at the time of the surrender. The Japanese had the 36th Group Army defending the Kanto plain outside of Tokyo and both the 1st and 4th Armored Divisions were deployed to protect the capitol. Plus the Japanese had held back the Chi-nu (i think) which had the 75mm gun and they had 144 of them built (and seen at 12:25 in this video). The Russians would not have had a field day with their Stalin tanks sinking into the soft ground and rice fields. Great video!
And also old PS2 game, Ring Of Red, which took place after Operation Downfall whereas South Japan fought against communist North Japan with mecha in Hokkaido Civil War
Seaman Nit Picker reporting in!:) The video seems funny and a lot of work has been done by respective author, but soviet Red Banner Pacific Fleet never had capacity to land more than 1 division at a time in 1945. The landing ships transferred by Hula project were 30 LCI(L) with the max capacity of 200 landing force personnel, and not a single LCT. Meanwhile, IJA forces on Hokkaido counted about 100000, with about 2 A-type divisions covering Northern part of Hokkaido. The fate of soviet force should soviets try amphibious landings is quite predictable :). And keep in mind IJN cruiser/destroyer force from Ominato NB. As for air power, results of sorties performed by soviet 128th mixed air division during soviet landings on Shumushu match the division name :) And the soviet area had very limited airfield capacity. Nevertheless, it's a good vid.

In fact, after the (unsuccessful) large-scale kamikaze attack on Okinawa, the Japanese military switched to conserving aircraft in preparation for a decisive battle on the mainland. There was no doubt that there was a shortage of pilots, but I think Japan could have dispatched a large number of aircraft in the situation shown in the video. However, there is no doubt that the Japanese military's air power was overwhelmingly inferior to that of the Red Army.

However, the Soviet Union broke the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact and suddenly invaded Japan, declaring war on Japan on August 8 and invading on August 9. It also occupied the Baltic States under the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Germany, a member of the "Axis of Evil. It is believed that the upper echelons of the Imperial Japanese Army initiated the war in anticipation of the Soviet occupation of Manchuria, Korea, and Hokkaido. In July 1941, a simulation of the war against Britain and the U.S. was conducted by a group of civilian officials and civilians within the Japanese government. The conclusion of the simulation was: "After the war begins, victory in the initial stages is expected, but the subsequent transition will inevitably be a prolonged war, and Japan's national strength will not be able to withstand the burden. The Soviet Union would enter the war at the end of the war, and defeat would be inevitable. For Japan, the best possible outcome of the war was to end the war by dragging the United States to the Japanese mainland after damaging the British Empire and the Chinese Nationalist Party. It was unthinkable for Japan to have a Cold War with the Soviet Union after 1945, with the block economies of the powers still in place, facing the corrupt Chinese Nationalist Party, and with the hostility of the U.S. at its back. (Japan's confrontation with the Soviet Union would inevitably involve interference on the continent, but it is obvious that the U.S. and Britain would not allow it.)

The planned Soviet invasion of Hokkaido is resourced from the three Red Army Fronts tasked with invading Manchuria, northern China, and northern Korea from August 6,1945. The total manpower exceeded 1.5 million men. From this manpower pool, 400,000 men form the Hokkaido invasion force. The Red Army can still count on additional forces re-deployed from defeated Germany and Eastern Europe if needed. The Soviets intend to take heavy casualties overrunning Hokkaido, which will be annexed to the Soviet empire and never returned to Japan, ever. In time, the descendants of Hokkaido Japanese will be speaking and reading Russian, following Russian laws and customs, and indoctrinated to hate the Japanese race. The Japanese are prepared to fight to the last man. The challenge was to deploy at least 600,000 defenders to Hokkaido with enough arms, ammunition, and supplies to last. Japanese tank and anti-tank assets remain scarce and insufficient. The Imperial Japanese Army never considered adopting the German Panzerschreck bazooka nor the Panzerfaust anti-tank bomb dispenser. The Army has to rely on kamikaze anti-tank men carrying large satchel charges or anti-tank lunge mines. All the while the Southern Army is fiercely engaged with American Army and Marines invasion forces on Kyushu. It is a bloody slog on Kyushu. The Japanese don't know that the Americans don't intend to overrun Kyushu in one rush. The Americans plan to halt at the bottom one-third of the island and dig in. Their intent is to turn southern Kyushu into an American vast bastion to support the invasion of Honshu in March 1946.
Eh, considering that many estimated that operation downfall would’ve lasted world war 2 possibly another year or 2, I can see the Soviets eventually invade Hokkaido, especially since Stalin wanted to take as much territory before Japan surrenders, even if it means committing massive casualties so he would’ve put the Soviet navy on hyperdrive to create ships even if they were low quality
As far as I have read about the end of WW2, the Soviets lacked a decent Navy, let alone enough landing craft. Conquering Manshukwo was relative easy. Crossing the Chinese Sea and the Japanese Sea is a huge undertaking even if you limit yourself between southern Korea and Japan. Coming over from the north and land on Hokkaido seems the best option at first, landings from southern Korea maybe later. If that's even necessary. with the two mainly US landings from the other side. Will the western allies give (landing) ships to the Soviets? I doubt it. Maybe just enough to establish two Russian fronts in the north and in the west, enough to tie the Japanese there. Or the allies might wait untill most of their own troops are in Japan. Anyhow I doubt the Soviets can make a first attempt in late 1945 from whatever direction. If they are smart they wait until Japan no longer has a decent airforce Or maybe they are happy with just being in control of the entire Korean peninsula. It all depends on Stalin. For the sake of this video, I guess he will ask the Allies for as much ships as they can possibly send and as soon as possible. He doesn't care about losing lifes on his own side anyhow. Idk, but all of Korea and all of Hokkaido might be politically enough for him...
They were able to successfully invade Sakhalin island which is very close to Hokkaido. But yeah the soviet navy wasn’t that powerful without a beachhead their forces would be easily repelled
The Soviets had a small fleet based in Vladivostok and invaded the Kuril Islands primarily using destroyers and motor boats. The Japanese had no ships left at this point and all their best troops and defences were in the south in readiness for an American invasion. Hokkaido had been stripped of its best defenders and equipment for this reason. It would have come down to luck essentially. If the Japanese kamikazes had been able to hit a few key Soviet ships, it would have crippled the invasion force but if they hadn't and the Soviets had been able to gain a foothold, the Japanese wouldn't have had the strength to dislodge them. After all, the Soviets didn't need tanks. Their AT rifles could penetrate any Japanese tank straight through from front to back. In a struggle between bolt-action rifle armed Japanese infantry and Soviet troops with the PPshs; it would be the same result as the Japanese facing the US Marines. The idea the Soviets would overwhelm the island in a matter of weeks or days is ludicrous. Without a large naval force to support them, it would have taken them months to build up a force capable of seizing the whole island after gaining a toehold. Of course, concurrent with an invasion of Hokkaido the Soviets would have been overrunning the Korean peninsula and with airfields there, they would have been able to attack most of the Japanese Home Islands and not just with bombers but with fighters and ground-attack aircraft, making it impossible for the Japanese to move reinforcements north.
I do not think that is the case, my friend. In the beginning, before the landing, a violent and intense strike is launched with artillery and aviation, if possible, focused on the enemy’s trenches, fortifications and defensive lines to destroy the enemy’s resistance and paralyze his ability to fire as much as possible and to reduce losses. Then the armored vehicles are landed first, followed by forces. Infantry, and the easiest and least fortified points are chosen to begin the attack. You cannot land your forces first on the foot of a high, fortified hill or mountain, as they may be annihilated. The attack will fail and your forces will suffer frightening losses. Any attack that depends on the intensity and concentration of fire, intelligence information, meteorology, and good planning. Without these factors, your attack will be a farce and a real tragedy for your forces. In the end, I hope that wars and conflicts will stop. Human lives and safety are very precious, and it is unfortunate to expose them to danger. It is unfortunate to see people killed, captured and injured, whether military or civilian. This is a terrible thing
The Soviets don't have Marines like the Americans. Instead, the Soviets rely on huge numbers of Naval Infantry. This is in contrast with the U.S. Navy which employs very small numbers of naval infantry. The Soviet Naval Infantry is comparable to the U.S. Marines in size and mission. Regular Soviet Red Army formations make up a large part of the invasion force. As expected, the Soviets are incurring large casualties but their advance continues. In early 1945, the Imperial Japanese Army finally began fabricating ''heavy' tanks, in reality, comparable to the American M4 Sherman, with thicker armor and a 75mm cannon. Few were manufactured, just over 100 reportedly and saved for homeland defense. Several high-caliber, self-propelled cannons were created for homeland defense. The backbone of the Japanese armor force remains their 'light' medium Chi-Ha 97 Shinhoto tank with 47mm cannon and any remaining light tanks, Type 95 Chi-Ro tanks with 37mm cannon.

Soviet attacked without naval gun? No way. Incorrect.
It Just a Naval ship destroyer
And with a puny airforce 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Had it happened the casualty figures would have been horrendous when you consider the Japanese belief that death was preferable to surrender, especially when fighting on home ground, and the Soviet’s apparent disregard for casualties as long as the objective was achieved.
Also Russia’s lack of landing craft would have made an actual invasion impossible

😂😂😂 Come on, what about Manchuria? Where your troops lost almost completely, and some parts of the Japanese army were able to hold back the Soviet army, I have never seen such nonsense.
Soviet generals: well, reconnaissance is down. Waves from 1 to 100 get on the ships!
In real life, during the entire landing operation on the Japanese islands, Soviet losses were:
1567 killed and wounded. Japanese: 1018 killed and wounded, 50,442 prisoners.
Forces of the parties: Soviet - about 9000 people

I wish, but it's very complicated to keep count of all deaths. Maybe some day I'll figure it out
Although not in Hokkaido, the number of casualties from the Battle of Shumshu is estimated.

The video seems funny and a lot of work has been done by respective author, but soviet Red Banner Pacific Fleet never had capacity to land more than 1 division at a time in 1945.

Wasn't it the Soviet Union that committed genocide in Poland (Katyn massacre), joined hands with the "Axis of Evil" to partition Poland, and inflicted great damage on Poland along with Germany? In the first place, Russia itself is a country that has increased its territory to Siberia, the Pacific, and Okhotsk through recent large-scale invasions.
If you are saying that China at that time fought back against Japan at that time, I would understand. Japan invaded China and inflicted enormous damage on China.
Also, if the US fought back against Japan, I would understand, since the US is a country that has been fighting since the beginning of the Pacific War.
In addition, the Soviet Union has caused a great deal of trouble in the surrounding areas, including its own territory, by invading Finland in the Winter War and causing extensive damage, especially in Ukraine (Holodomor). In addition, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan, breaking the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact.
Let me ask you, were the Soviet Union's actions a justified counterattack?

Wolfenstein Germany vs Imperial Japan, just a suggestion.

If they are smart they wait until Japan no longer has a decent airforce
Or maybe they are happy with just being in control of the entire Korean peninsula. It all depends on Stalin. For the sake of this video, I guess he will ask the Allies for as much ships as they can possibly send and as soon as possible. He doesn't care about losing lifes on his own side anyhow. Idk, but all of Korea and all of Hokkaido might be politically enough for him...
The Russians had no ships to carry out a landing nor did they have the experience to do so. I think that in reality it would have been catastrophic.
In terms of strategy and terrain, Japan had the advantage, but in terms of manpower and weapons, the Soviets were superior.

Greetings from Mexico: I really doubt that by that moment (that never really occurred), the Japanese would still had that much planes in good shape.

This... Is a very much an overestimation on what couldve happened
