The scary thing is the infamous Tsar Bomba was supposed be *100* megatons. The actual bomb was only HALF the power it was originally going to be, but that would certainly result in the plane being unable to escape, so they had no choice but to tone it down. TERRIFYING!

@@user-pg2kj7ps7o Hydrogen bombs scale simply by adding more hydrogen. It only depends on how large you want to make it. The explosions at this scale can't be sustained within our atmosphere so going much larger suffers from diminished returns if it's merely for ground damage.
@Demane69 Not sure what you mean by "can't be sustained within our atmosphere", but your point is correct. The problem with larger bombs is that because the energy is released equally in all directions, most of it goes into the atmosphere instead of down onto the thing you want destroyed. 3 bombs of X kilotons each are always more efficient than 1 bomb of 3X kilotons. And this is before taking into account the fact that the higher the yield, the higher in the atmosphere the bomb must be detonated to achieve optimal destruction, but the higher in the atmosphere it is detonated the more energy is not directed towards the ground. It is a vicious cycle of rapidly diminishing returns.
Plus there is the interception risk. If a 3X kt bomb/warhead gets intercepted, that's it, no boom. But if one of the three X kt bomb/warheads gets intercepted (which is harder to do since they will be smaller), there are still two X kt bomb/warheads hitting the target.
As for Poseidon, its realistic yield is around 2 Mt. Assuming it ever enters service and isn't just more Russian military vapourware.

И то их долбануло так, что улетели с 7 км до 14 км вверх! Самолёт так подбросило!

Another fun fact about the Tsar Bomba:
The blast of the bomb was expected to be so large that the pilot was given a 50% chance of actually living. They decided to put a parachute onto the bomb to give him a better chance, and the parachute was so large it weighed nearly a ton itself. When the bomb finally detonated, He was 27 miles away from the blast finally hit him, and the plane nose dived. Luckily, he managed to recover and he lived!
Also the plane was polished metal in the hope it would reflect most of the heat radiation from the flash of the bob, so the plane would not just burst into flame.

The Tsar Bomba was intended as a propaganda statement, not a usable device. The 100MT variant would have kicked up so much radiation that it would have contaminated land of the Soviet Union if dropped anywhere in Europe.

I'm surprised, even as an honourable mention, that the Halifax Explosion wasn't on this list. About 2.9 kilotons of TNT, a frieght ship carrying munitions exploded, and was the largest man-made explosion ever, before the atomic bomb.

The Tsar Bomba was originally intended for 100MT fission-fusion-fission. But aware of the danger of their creation, they limited it to 50, leaving it in fission-fusion.

It's the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated. At that period of The Cold War the USA was starting to develop much more complex guidance systems than the USSR and could hit strategic targets with much greater accuracy. So the USSR said "Ok, then we'll just build a nuke so big that it won't matter if it misses by a couple of miles" and this beast was the result of that line of thinking.

Not much, the war would probably have ended.
Soviet-Japanese war began right after Nagasaki bombing and lasted for about a month during which Soviet and Chinese forces pushed Japanese forces off the mainland (So fighting still continued even after nukes), cutting them all of the resource bases they obtained prior, completely halting them any capability for full scale war production. They would simply have little to nothing to fight the rest of the world with at that moment and would be blockaded. When Japan decided to capitulate most of the officers didn't even care or know about the nukes, they were concerned they had no more mainland footing.
It's just statistic point though, I'm not defending Japan from the point of morality here.
The cameraman in this video has way too much plot armor to be surviving these explosions.

They had to attach parachute so that crew can survive, even then the shockwave caught the plane that was 27 miles away from the bomb, one of the crew members screamed that shockwave is catching them, the pilot made decision to quickly fly up as fast as possible to reduce damage, the plane hit by shockwave was sent from 7km to 14k up in the air, the crew survived.

I've stood in a crater from a Tallboy in Kåfjord in Alta, Norway. Massive hole through pure rock, easily deeper than many average Norwegians are tall. The RAF tried to sink the Tirpitz which lay anchored there.
There's a Tallboy crater close to where I live in the United Kingdom, at an old practice bombing range. It's filled with water now and easily accessible from a public footpath, and it looks quite serene with the local horses drinking from it, but it's easily big enough to drown several cars, and I do marvel at the power that it must have taken to scoop out all of that dirt in a fraction of a second......

And to think the tsar bomba explosion was not as powerful as the bomb was intended. They thought it would be too powerful to test so used a smaller payload. It was 3800 times the one in Hiroshima, or 50 megatons, but was designed to do 100. Scary.

Honestly one of the more accurate depictions of an M67 I’ve seen. Movies always show giant fire balls come out of grenades. But really it’s just black smoke. Followed by what sounds like rain as all the shrapnel falls around you.
The detail is so great in this video, I love it. I hope the next video relating to destructive explosions is even more realistic and has actual physics behind it. Heck, I would even put money into that. Amazing video as always ❤

The 1917 Halifax explosion was 3 times larger than the Beirut explosion. The largest non-nuclear explosion ever!

Mainly because buildings and ships in 1917 weren't built as tough as modern buildings and ships are today and thus the damage wound up being more severe and further out than the one in Beirut.

Former U.S. Army soldier here. The frag grenade and the claymore may not *seem* like much, and they certainly aren't by comparison with a Czar Bomba (lol), but their killing power can't be understated. Even if the blast itself doesn't kill you, the shrapnel and/or concussive force will, and from much farther away than you'd think. Those pressure waves are no joke.
I agree, shrapnel kills or injures most soldiers on the battlefield, it's not a gunfire. So it's a good idea to wear vests and helmets, even if they don't help against direct fire.

For context, the current population of new York is 8.3 million. And I'm presuming the estimate isn't taking into account immediate radiation poisoning or rubble as cause of death
With enough advanced warning a lot of those people could get into the subway system, underground garages and basements, and survive the blast and be shielded from the radiation. A fusion bomb detonated at 4 Km would generate little to no radioactive fallout. The only radioactive fallout would come from the small amount used in the fission portion of the fusion explosion. Tsar Bomba sized devices, however, aren't in any current arsenals. Most launchable warheads in play today are less than 1 Mt each.

That said, a nuclear war must never be fought. The death toll and damage even under the 'best' circumstances would be absolutely catastrophic.
