Omg, I also started with Nursing and now I am applying for a Statistics major instead! Thank you for introducing the subject to me before school starts 🙏 Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
I can 100% relate. I’ve never met a single person who hasn’t changed paths sometime in life - happens to the best of us. I personally came into Uni as a CS major, hated what CS actually is (about 75% theory of computation) and how programming is just a tool for CS (making it the most dropped major lol), but then now am retaking my first year as either an actuarial science and math honours or stats and math honours student…one of these paths are yet to be decided :)
I clicked on this video because I remember really enjoying taking my statistics class but I hate math so I definitely would not have majored in it. I also wanted to say that I also went through a lot of different paths with finding which major was for me and I finally figured out from a starting point of political science to fisheries that I really want to be a zoology major and work in the museum that I volunteer at! All it takes is a little bit of exploring and experiencing things firsthand to actually know if you want to do it for forever!
Great point in emphasizing the difference of what we enjoy versus what we can do as a career. 💖 Also, I relate with the figuring out process. I initially thought I'd be doing a business degree but here I am now, a statistics major. I still have room for explore and hoping it goes well. Super thanks Chris as always. 🙏😇
yo bro, this mighta been a huge wake up for me. took an intro to data science course last year as a freshman and was looking so hard to find a school that had a data science major. since that barely exists, i've been looking into other majors that sound near data science in subject, and it took me till now to realize that all data science is is statistics, just exclusively in excel. you mentioned regression models and anova tests and everything connected lmaoo. ive also been naturally good with math, so i think im gonna be pursuing that direction. your insight was a huge help bro thank you
@@logan-rw8fn you’re welcome! I’m glad I could help, I will say you are in for an awakening if you are assuming data science/statistics is all done within excel though
Changing paths is just the way of life. Things don't always go nicely like we had first thought in our minds. I originally wanted to go to school for forensic chemistry, after taking organic chemistry and feeling awful at it my girlfriend was the one to tell me "play into your strengths". I never thought I was good at math either but statistics just clicked for me and now I'm almost done.
Yeah initially I wanted to study math with economics but unfortunately my parents said no for that . My plan b was taking math and statistics which now I'm studying as a 2nd year student so I'm happy what I've taken because during my high school I've decided that I'll study statistics in future. Great video Chris it'll help many students who're confused about majors that they want to choose.
I think the problem a lot of people have is that, while they don't know what they want to do, they also need to major in something they are good at to meet GPA requirements. Most people don't excel or like anything that is going to make them a lot of money. If you're not good at STEM in HS, your options are serverly limited.
I wasn’t necessarily “good” at STEM in HS.. but ended up switching to a math major from Nursing after my first semester in college. College is a HUGE investment, like seriously you are paying tens of thousands of dollars to get an education and it’s my opinion that you should have a real plan for (realistic) what you want to do after you graduate .. run the numbers with what that job makes in your local area and determine if that’s a worthwhile path .. REGARDLESS if it is in STEM or not
Well at my school you choose almost any minor to go with an applied statistics major.. however instead of applied statistics you can also choose statistics with actuarial focus or graduate studies focus
Yes, applied will focus a lot more on the actual process of doing statistics (I.e. knowing how to perform a statistical test in R) where “normal” is going to be focused more on the math/theory
Well I would say this whole channel is based on advice for stats majors 😂 but seriously best advice I can give you is take advantage of anything that will give you a leg up in getting a job (projects career fairs etc.) it can be easy to lose focus on WHY you are going to college!
Hy bro, i have a question, i graduated from high school last year with a background in economics and i passed the entrance exam of a university in which i was willing to study economics, buisness withing it, but some problems occured..anyways i joind an institute that teaches health statistics ( or other wise biostatistics), currently m in my second semester, in my country the system and manner of teaching is way moooooooore different comparing to the US or europe, its like comparing a planet with an another planet, however, what i wanted to tell is that, im finding myself not liking what m studying, we didnt begin in studying how biostatics really are ! Or how are we going to work or or or..., we wont be able to find out until next year, but basically im studying righr now inferential statistics and i can say that i really dont like this bro , i mean even my specializations which is economics m not really into it, its just that i dont find myseld in anything, m bad at math because ive been a student of the worst math teachers ever, furthermore, and like i said i just never knew what should i study, there is literally no major, no subjet , no job no thing that im open or interested or intrigued by it, so basically im writing this seeking any advice from you! And my second question is after these 3 years of and taking my bachelors degree in health statistics what things can i do with them, i have many and many questions bro........ i joind your discord, my name is killua ill write a mssg and ill try to contact you later..
I mean for real if you aren’t connecting to your work, no interest in it, or jobs in the field you should look into something else! That’s really all I can tell you, but I can’t make that decision for you!

Where can I find your email? I do have some questions about statistics that I’d like to ask you. Thanks again!
Should be on my about page or you can join on discord

Facts. Sometimes you just need someone to tell you what your strengths are

Statistics is a powerful tool. A regret in my life in not applying myself towards this but instead majoring in Economics.
There’s always room to learn more!
Why is Economics bad?
@@dabrastic6863 a BA in Economics is not bad, it gave me a solid foundation of the Financial world.
I watch these videos to feel good about a choice I made blindly lol
Your focus is INFORMATION SYSTEM. What were some other focuses aka disciplines for applied statistics?

@@ChristianGardner please do give some examples of minors. Thank you
@@jahanzebali589 like literally anything that my college offers.. anything lol
Some I can think of off the top of my head, economics, finance, information systems, math, computer science, psychology .. literally any of them
@@ChristianGardner can a bachelor degree holder MECHANICAL ENGINEER become a STATISTICIAN? With choosing minor of mathematics?
My dauther is taking BS in statistics major in Mathematics it is okey shes 2nd year this coming school year.
Is there any significance difference between a normal statistics major and applied statistics?
Yes, applied will focus a lot more on the actual process of doing statistics (I.e. knowing how to perform a statistical test in R) where “normal” is going to be focused more on the math/theory
Any advice on the best college to major applied statistics as of 2022?
