If you choose one of the most useless degrees you will be throwing your money away. Unfortunately, there are MANY degrees that are useless out there but if you just watch this video you will know which ones to avoid.
Just wanted to clarify that the knowledge learned from these degrees might be invaluable, but the piece of paper you get definitely isn't if it doesn't lead to you getting a job... And when you can get the knowledge for free in many other places then why pay $30k+ for it?

I live in Sweden and all our education is free. The state even give you 350 dollars a month to incentivize people to study. This way you can actually give your passion a go, and not go into debt.
And it's perfect system as I think 🔥
In Poland is the same, however there are limited places for each academic year/ subject and also you need to take external exams, and your grades also give you points etc.
For instance if you're going to study Sports Science, you take particular University/ Sports Academy exams and your grades count too from your Uni pass qualification ( Matura).
Some people that have been rejected, can study part time or apply to private University..

That's exactly what I thought. And there are countries in which moving from one region to the other is impossible for people 'cause it's just too expensive.

And adjust your entire life to that plan? It just makes no sense unless you're already very rich and have no other responsibilities like a marriage or children or your elderly parents.

That is the problem with what he said.
Yeah, the "just use Rosetta Stone" indicates that he is not someone who has studied another language. You also can't absorb a language just by living there, you HAVE to study. And most countries have a language requirement for their visas. You can't just roll up to a country, live there for years, and expect someone to hire you because you're there and magically bilingual. I know because I lived in Korea for five years and getting a visa beyond teaching English is extremely tough.
Yes, that, and also that 99% of people that attempt to study a second language on their own quits within the first month. Going to school forces you to study and make it a large focus in your life. Especially if the tuition is coming out of your own pocket.

@Shane Hummus Publishing. I’m doing some minor and certificate work to build a resume before a master’s program, but I know I’ll need to freelance before I get any kind of stable job. So... employment in the field right after graduation is not in the cards. But I’ve come to peace with that.

What classifies as “tech”
Nothing is “useless” if you have the right plan, network and the passion to keep looking.
That said, some are easier than others and college as a whole is overpriced terribly.

yeah whenever people hear i'm doing philosophy at university they think i'm an idiot who's going to work retail forever, then i tell them i literally want to teach philosophy, and write books on philosophy. it's something i'm good at and the way modern academia works means there are people who literally want to pay me to talk about the thing i like and help people who also like it understand it better. why wouldn't i want that?
Im an aircraft mechanic and work with a guy who has a bachelors in psychology... he went back to school for aviation maintenance because no money in psychology... 😬

I majored in communications lol but I chose the public relations track so I'm doing relatively alright. This job I just took pays 6 figures but it's a tough industry. I think what you said about psychology could also be said about a few science degrees too unless those people plan to continue with higher education. I know plenty of people with chemistry, biology, and even math related degrees who have a hard time finding a job because most of the money jobs require a masters or PhD.
Same here, if you’re going the comm route, Public Relations is your best bet. Got a decent paying remote job a month before graduation. 6 months later still there
Yeah I am always told homeland security degree are worthless it’s not always the degree it’s the resume as well. I trying to going into law enforcement. I am also am a volunteer firefighter the more credentials you got the better. I have a background with horses so I can be a could candidate for mounted units. People gotta understand it’s about know what exactly you want to do if you end up in public services your set.
I finished that and I completely hate it😩(I mean communication and pr) it's easy and if you know how to use it and your brain is working decently, you'd be able to do extremely well out of it without any stress.

As someone majoring in English literature and cultural studies, i believe people really overlook the value of interdisciplinary nature of education these days.

@deltaanthropos5259 Theories make up the basis of new knowledge that is then applied into the private sector. Academia isn't for everyone and some academia is more readily applicable and useful than others, but the value of research shouldn't be understated...

The most useless degree is one that isn't finished. The reality is that there is no useless degree. No matter what you choose, it is your choice. Even if life does not turn out well for you in the end, the degree you chose is not to blame. Life just isn't fair, that's just how it is. You just have to deal with it. Goodluck everybody.

Edit: I do want to add, I believe you should always pursue your passion, but if you are reaching for something that has shallow job opportunity, go for it but please be smart and strategic about how you get there. Remember that sometimes a college major isn’t always the most efficient way into an industry, you have to evaluate the worth yourself. And don’t think for a second trade school is inferior to college, it’s just as valuable! I sincerely wish you all great prosperity!

Funnily enough, I had to do a bit of art (architecture) history as part of my town planning degree: it was probably one of the most difficult subjects I ever had to pass (and I was an honor list student)! And it was only a first year subject. A friend almost got kicked out of her architecture degree course because she could not pass (first year) art history.

I don't take an artistic degree but I would guarantee that anyone who does would have infinitely more access to resources and different equipment than someone who is self taught. I think it was a bit harsh to disregard Fine Art and Photography so quickly since being talked at in a classroom is not the only way you can learn in an academic environment. Then again, this is from the perspective of someone from the UK with a marginally better education system.
As a self taught aspiring part time illustrator majoring in stem I agree. My friend is doing it seriously in university (games art) and I can’t help that I’m missing out
I study photography on bachelor degree in Germany. Chilliest life, and I can't save myself from all the jobs I get even while studying. Well paid jobs. This video is Bullshit. Ok, maybe it's Bullshit for every other countrie except the US. But who is so stupid and studies anything in the US? 😂😂😂 If I would have born there, I would have went full refugee in Europe. The US is no country for people with a brain. I mean, they give scholarships for their monkeylike football players, while science students get driven into poverty, even if they are exceptionally intelligent. What country favors athletes before science, culture and art? I tell you. A country, that doesn't know a culture. The US doesn't know history, historical buildings, archeology, museums that are more then cheap entertainment. The US is a big bunch of very, very stupid people and this video... is the proof.
As a young American graphic designer, I will say this: I don't regret getting my degree (the classes were excellent in helping me to understand software, how copyrights and other stuff work, plus improving techniques), but a degree in this alone will NOT prepare you for the workforce. My internship was a real shock to discover how different the outside world actually was. Thankfully, I learned enough to understand many of the business fundamentals, so when my first job at a graphic design and marketing firm fell apart (the boss was just a tyrannical, deceptive man and a workaholic), I was able to try going independent/freelancing. It's rough out here and cash is tight (a bad economy is REALLY bad for us designers), but I'm hoping I can make it work (and learn enough on my own to keep growing in skills).

the Uk doesn't have a better education system by a long stretch. Why high school then college for 2 years and university.
If you want to major in psychology, get the social work degree or a counseling degree. And make sure you get a masters. It makes all the difference. If you get a bachelors in one of those areas you can usually do an advanced standing masters, and it only takes another year, but you will make back that money pretty easily.
There's different fields or branches of psychology besides psychiatry or behavioral psychology/ clinical psychology.

Current film student here! I would say it really depends. Where I'm from, it would've been nearly impossible for me to have gone straight into the field. I'm going to learn more about the technical aspects. Also, the internships that become available as a student are invaluable. I wouldn't have gone if it weren't for them. Lots of film stuff can honestly be learned without school, but school can make it a lot easier. Film is such a diverse and complicated field, it really depends what you want to specialize in. I would really do a lot of research before making your decision! Hope this helps!

(That pays even better) so try to specialize in that, it’s on high demand in the private and public sector. Best advice is look for the school that offers you the better deal, forget about fancy names and recognition, go for the cheapest school you Can find and get out of the student loan debt as soon as you can.

I feel like degrees in art history and such are good if, for example, you want to study a teaching degree as well so you can teach a particular area you’re passionate about. Same with psych, if you intend of making a particular career out of it and want to go to grad school, it could be useful. I think it’s just a matter of knowing what career you want out of the degree, and how you network, volunteer and get work experience in the area during the study period to achieve jt
I've just watched the other video about the top 10 majors to study and I think what bothers me the most is the same dichotomy that comes all over again: Arts degrees are seen as useless, whereas Science (or Engineering) degrees are seen as useful. But at the end everything in this world is dualistic so I really believe we need both. Like the both sides of a coin, you know. Still it was interesting to hear what you think, so I appreciate the video. :)

BUT, what I notice is that you can literally do any degree arts, studies or whatever but still get a job for example, let’s say I do philosophy... I go out there and look for an internship for marketing role.

Psychology is a great field of study if you go all the way to a PhD or PsyD in clinical or forensic psychology. I now a retired clinical/forensic psychologist after 40 wonderful and fruitful career.

I think he's stopping at Bachelor level, which is pretty much useless and it's a BA. Your degree is a BS which is going for more the medical aspect . Nowadays in the medical field, you pretty much need a master's or a doctorate degree anyway.

I was a little bit surprised about the anthropology / archaeology one. Maybe it's because I live in an Oregon Trail area, but there are jobs for folks in these fields (especially specialists in these fields) quite often on our government job boards.
I do disagree on the fine arts one, my art teacher went that route, got a job doing medical illustration and got paid fairly well. However I get how a route like that isn't for all artists. This video did have some good points though, so thanks for the effort you put into it. :)

I think personally, you are right, I love psychology but I didn't choose it as a career option as my parents didn't supported me to do so, I was a little mad about it but now I see, the most important thing is to just give a better financial edge to my family after being in college for 4 years. I can learn psychology from anywhere if I am interested, but its not a good career path

The purpose of some useless majors is that they’re potentially easy and an easy way to get a bachelors degree. After you have a degree try to get into a random field not related to your major. If you can’t then get a certificate in something you want to work in on of your degree and that may work out well.

It should be called “The most useless degrees to make money in the United States”. I think it depends about the economical expectations each one has. I think that a degree should be a chance to be an asset in the field you’re heading too and to give some value to it, not only a money-making investment.

@@adraen5942 Where are you from? In most of the other advanced countries like in Europe, you don't even get a right to go to college, then you pay 50% tax when you start working. You can study all you want and there are many ways in US. However, not everyone can be a professional in their chosen field. There are competitions, and as a result all the innovations come from US. I'm so happy I live in the US with lots of opportunities for those who make the right decisions and work hard.
@@FIR2031 I'm french, which means I have free access by RIGHT to the university, in the field of my choosing, and I don't have to gamble my life away. Then I don't spend the next 50 years trying to reimburse my student loan because I don't have one. There is still competition, because the higher you go, the less spots there are, so you have to work hard to get as far as you want, the difference being, if you don't get in, your life is not ruined, you have lots of other options, other free options.
"All the innovations come from US" Sure mate, let's all ignore every innovation made elsewhere (there's a lot) and the huge amount of "american" scientists that made their studies elsewhere and came to the US afterwards. "Lots of opportunities", don't make me laugh... You only get some of those opportunities if you've got the money, that's not an opportunity...
A degree in comms is like being the middle person who will find out the a companies outlook so you can communicate to social media, or meeting clients for media packs, creative stuff etc.. You're basically the manager possible creator for the media section, and that field is massive in the digital world. Anyone can google stuff but in the office world they will mostly require a degree and senior etc in years pays extremely well.

The only useless degree is the one you aren't interested in. To my friends in highschool, study what you're interested in, if you spend your time doing something you want to do you'll figure out how to make money doing it. Just don't end up like oh so many miserable people I've met in my 7years in university that are studying something to "get a good job", most of them will end up switching careers in the end and regret not doing what they wanted to from the start.
You can study something you’re passionate about without wasting almost a hundred grand and trying to make everyone else pay for it with debt forgiveness when it has no real world application. College is about acquiring skills for a job, with the internet you can study as much as you want. Not that anyone with the “do what you love” philosophy will ever study or work independently.
A useless degree is a degree you cannot use, and the vast majority of jobs out there that need to be done are not pleasant. Even if necessary work was magically evenly distributed to match interests it will become less enjoyable when you’re doing it 40 hours per week.

Got a biology degree, couldn't get a job. Worked an IT job for almost 3 years, and then decided try out nursing by gettng a CNA. Eventually got a master in clinical psychotherapy and become a therapist. I really think at the end of the day, what major we chose is only part of the equation.

My first degree was in psychology. As far as careers are concerned it would have been almost useless. I went on to study mathematics and statistics. What is often unmentioned is that, at least in Canada, of the 'harder' qualifications to obtain this is one of the less well remunerated. Better to study something utterly boring such as some field of business.

In most countries, it is a field within sociology. A student would have a few classes of it, or go thru a post graduation in it. For some reason, in the United States, it is an entire degree

I'm an anthropologist. I got a job actually with 3 companies as an archaeologist. Then I got hired later as a crime lab technician. Going further I am aiming towards forensics. So people, if you are out there- and smart enough, go for it.

I have had interviews with the Medical Examiners office (M.E. assistant technician) and with local sheriffs office to be a forensic science specialist (aka crime scene tech)
So mainly my anthropology degree put me there. And my certification was a booster.
I would say if you take a focus in anthropology pick forensic or straight up archaeology. Archaeology is great, but working in field will humble anyone. It's not for the faint of heart. You need stamina and strength. My aim goal is to do work with crime scenes and especially those that involve excavation of human remains. You could say that's my specialty. But it surely depends on what angle you approach your degree at.
As a psych undergrad: Yes most graduates wont end up in psych. BUT a lot of majors in psych have multiple degrees (im in med school fe). But if u want to work in psych to "help people" become a social worker, youll be able to help A LOT OF PEOPLE and dont have to get a huge loan

Edit: I’m just going to try to answer all the questions in the comments here. My mom already had an interest in tech and programming experience before getting her degree. She initially worked in a psych field, but found it very taxing and eventually moved onto IT positions (several different ones, involving hard skills as well), primarily through networking and working on the side. According to her, she uses what she learned in psychology classes every day. It probably played a role in her ability to jump to a new field. She also needed a bachelors degree to get her foot in the door, so the degree wasn’t really useless. She did this around the late 90s - early 2000s. My dad did a similar jump from an international studies degree to IT (he also learned programming as a teen).
Also helps that a) college was not as expensive in the 80s/90s and b) my mom’s dad worked for the university she went to, so her tuition was free. Either way, she DID use her degree to get her IT positions.

Not everyone who picks subjects are doing so with the priority of just making money. I hold a BA and MA in English and changed from a business major to humanities after reading the late billionaire J. Paul Getty's essay, "The Educated Executive." Getty stated that he found those possessing broad educations were better suited to upper management than those whose technical educations rendered them with "tunnel vision," often lacking the ability to grasp the big picture. Following are some of the careers English opened up to me: #1 writer for a major broadcast station; #2 production supervisor for a large tobacco company ; #3 officer And pilot offers from both the Air Force And Navy; #4. manager for a major American retail chain ; #5 wholesale sales representative for one of America's largest breweries; #6 inside sales coordinator for a major manufacturer supplying equipment to the oil and gas industry ; 7 admission to a graduate program in urban design and planning ; staff writer and columnist for a large weekly newspaper ; 8 jobs teaching English in several middle schools and colleges. So, it's not so much the concentration one seeks as much as one's personal initiative.

I majored in English and Anthropology in undergrad. I then went to law school (you can major in anything and then go to law school). After practicing with a few firms, I struck out on my own. I built ancillary companies (lawyers often have ancillary consulting and servicing businesses that can be sold to non-lawyers) and sold one of them last year, making me a multi-millionaire after years of making over $1 million a year in net income. Now I've acquired another law firm and ancillary company, and we're growing it into another 8-figure business. To me, he's on the right track that anyone can learn anything on their own by buying a book or downloading an app, so -- in that light -- every major is "useless." However, I took classes that interested me and stimulated my creativity and imagination while teaching me about those who came before me and the mistakes they'd made so I wouldn't repeat them. I have had coaches, read many books, and watched a lot of videos to learn about marketing, sales, financial reporting, entrepreneurship, and executing a strategy to implement a vision. I took not one business class in undergrad or law school. But I've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars since law school to learn how to be a better lawyer, a visionary, and a leader. In addition to running my own firm and businesses, I now help coach entrepreneurs and other lawyers on how to build and run their business. In short, any major is a foundation that should stimulate creativity and wonder while providing a basic foundational education on how to think critically, write persuasively, and speak eloquently. I think the most useless degree is the one that you choose after watching a video like this where you try to find a degree that's supposed to be the most useful. If you're not passionate about it and only take it to get a job, you're gonna fail miserably and even regret later. You should always always choose something that you can do for the rest of your life. Not something that other people are telling you to do. To me everything else is useless other than the ones I care about. This person doesn't understand a lot of the degrees he mentioned, because he didn't study them. Everything can be learned through internet and books these days.

I think he refers specifically as useless because it won't help you get a job, not as those things are useless as a thing even if you're passionate about them. But the point is, just because you're passionate about something doesn't mean you have to get a degree in it (and spending a lot of money) when you can study it on your own, with courses and other resources that won't leave you with an empty wallet or in debt for years. Sooner or later you have to know how to separate passions from earnings, because you can be very passionate about archeology but, if you can't get a job with that, where are you going to get the money to buy archeology books, travel the world and make discoveries? I think that it is better to think about, if you are going to study something that is going to cost you as much money as the university, you should investing in something that you like but will minimally benefit you economically in the future, and then you can invest in your passions such as hobbies or studying in courses and taking complementary classes. And again, it's not that it's impossible to find a job in these fields, but since it's more risky and can be learned in the same way self-taught, you could simply start the search on your own without the need for a university degree.

Translation studies is not about learning a language because you don't translate words, but concepts. Actually, translation students are supposed to already know the foreign language(s) when they start their studies. And just because someone is "bilingual" it doesn't mean that person can translate properly, give them a technical text and you'll see what I´m talking about.
I went to school for instrumental performance out of high school...I had a good time but life happened and I had to quit before I graduated. I'm now 33 about to start school majoring in IT. Wish I would've done that to begin with.

The thing with psychology is that you pretty much can't do anything with just a B.A. You need to do a master's in order to select which branch of psychology you're going to be focusing on. And you need to select a master's course that allows you to intern. After that you either become a practitioner or a researcher in academics.
Psychology is just really oversubscribed. There are too many graduates and too few jobs.

You can work on an NGO, for example. You can become a copywriter who understands the psycology of customers and how to influence them. You can become a branding specialist. You can become a social psycology. You can become an education advisor. Many things you can do.
Idk what the hell is going on in America but where I live in Australia people literally have to travel eight hours to get into a psychiatrist or a psychologist. It’s a very in demand job in many area’s here. Even the government mental health system is struggling to find psychiatrists to employ.

I don't think there is anything wrong necessarily with getting one of these degrees, but if you are going to, you really need to think a lot about what you are going to do after graduating and how you are going to do it.

Marketing is a good career I think, but let me tell you something, I studied a specialization in marketing because it was a scholarship, and as an English teacher I've worked teaching classes to some wealthy people, and more than once I've listened that a master in marketing is useless. Do it to enrich your networking, otherwise it won't give you much, you probably know that in marketing what matters most is the experience.
I think, it depends with Psychology, because believe it or not there are TWO types of psychology degrees, the B.A. (the most common one), that focuses in Social Sciences and there is the B.S. that in majority of school is part of the STEM programs for its heavy science courses and that Psychology degree in specific will prepare you for doctoral level degrees, such as MD, DO, CD, MDM, PharmD, VMD, Public Health, Neuroscience, etc. Which a lot of them a very profitable. However, if you are not planning to go to Grad School, BS in Psych and or a BA in Psych doesn’t help much as you mentioned (probably the BS would help a bit more).

Majoring in a foreign language isn't just about learning the language, its also about learning culture, literature, grammar, etc.
You could learn that while traveling with much less money than you’d spend on the degree. Again, exactly what he said.

In the desperate need for greatness, Antonio is willing to discard everyone he knows in order to feel better about himself. Those who want something bad enough will get it, no matter what, even if it costs people’s lives.

I became a Posse Scholar in December of 2022. Posse Foundation is one of the biggest national leadership and merit scholarship programs in the US. Before going to college, Posse Scholars are required to go through a training called PCT (Pre Collegiate Training). I have 2 trainers. One of my trainers have a degree in Gender Studies. He’a one of the most awesome people I have met. He’s a trainer for Posse NY for 13 years, and he was the trainer of my mentor who nominated me.
What I want to say is-your degree is what you make out of it. There are many careers you can look for with different organizations. It’s not useless-the skills and connections you get out with are what matters. My trainer is incredibly skilled as a mentor and youth development.

You are absolutely right about fine arts. Im 54 and been drawibg and painting since i was 3. 0% of spending time in a college art class will get you a job in the art field. I went to work with a screen printing company and learned on the job. I designed prints and did color seperations. I designed prints for poker machines and rugs. Now I work for myself doing portraits. Today most all designs for amy product and illustrations are done on computer. So, a degree gets you nothing but on debt and employers usually will hire a person who has natural artistic abilities rather than a college grad.

@Joeseph Moore It is. There are lots of libraries but not that many go there. Those who do only go for Computer work, printing, or try to find a hot spot. Very rarely do you see someone there to actually read. At least bookstores (at least some of them) are doing well.

Deciding what major to do for art is hard. Fine arts is probably one of the worst areas you could go into. One of the best suggestions I’ve gotten is going into a art field that can be easy to get a job. Like I’m doing graphic design and that has growing demand. Art college is not only about building your portfolio, learning more skills, but also connections. Connections can make of break you in the art world.

Honestly, if you're seriously debating which art major to go for, and you are adamant about getting into the arts, then just do the one you like most. There will always be jobs, even if they're not in your exact major, but at least you did follow your passion fully.
However, that is given you manage to get into a top 30-50 of the schools for that particular major, and I wouldn't veer away from the top 10-15 if you really do want to pusue it to the fullest. It's not just the quality of teaching and faculty or the facilities and prestige, but perhaps most importantly the connections and exposure you get within that particular field.
I'm hitting 20 in half a year for example, and still not doing shit but focusing on building up my portfolio and saving up money to get into those top 10 (maybe 3, one can dream) hopefully. You seldom hear of a CSM or Antwerp Royal College graduate that doesn't have a job in the fashion field he studied, and a very good and high paying one at that.
Well personally I’m interested in writing so that’s why I went after a communications degree. It’s general but in a sense where you have to narrow it down to something you’re interested in doing. I was planning on using it to get into tech writing or something that intrigues me, there’s multiple variations of the communications degree.
Currently a Liberal Arts Media Studies major but decided to transfer to another university and change my major to Computer Information Systems which is close to Computer Science. Can’t really go far with a media studies degree
I feel like psychology is misunderstood. The good thing about this major is that it's universal and very broad. It will always be needed.

In this day and age, if you only have a bachelor's degree, you are pretty useless 😢😅
1) I was going to go for art degree but instd chose to go with my childhood aspiration, forensic investigation. Im talented and did art for 19 yrs but caused greats mounts of depression whereas forensics excites me. Also, for things like photography, ye you can learn outside the course but u wont gain connections and learning how to make it a success without the course, u have loads of access to facilities aswell as good portfolio building works. It also can come in handy for lots of industries, including marketing, forensics, and more
My dream is to be an actress, but i know that it is so hard to find a good job in that area, so im studying computer engineering (i actually really like it!) and then i will take acting courses when i have a stable job

I'm debating about majoring in psychology, but then getting my Eds is School Psychology (or a masters in Psych) to be, well, a school psychologist. I know this video is four years old, but as of now the job outlook looks very positive. And if I go for a masters, I can eventually work towards a PhD and possibly become a professor, or a clinical psychologist too. I think there can be a lot of job prospects in psychology, you just have to understand how to make it work and the path needed to take
I went with a liberal arts degree because it was easy, but now I am reconsidering. Thankfully its only on the associate level.
