I don't like math at all, I was not good at it at all before I chose Economics, nonetheless I'm the winner of my scholarship and one of those TOP-15 students at my university (probably number 1) the thing is you do not have to be good at math to study Economics, You should be good at math to understand some concepts of it, and you can surely learn it after your choice of Economics.

    I like the quote from Kaynes on what does it mean to be a (master) economist:
    “The master-economist must possess a rare combination of gifts .... He must be mathematician, historian, statesman, philosopher-in some degree. He must understand symbols and speak in words. He must contemplate the particular, in terms of the general, and touch abstract and concrete in the same flight of thought. He must study the present in the light of the past for the purposes of the future. No part of man's nature or his institutions must be entirely outside his regard. He must be purposeful and disinterested in a simultaneous mood, as aloof and incorruptible as an artist, yet sometimes as near to earth as a politician.”
    I'm not sure if it's helpful when you're choosing your degree, but it inspired me when I was beginning my journey with the subject, it shows how wide the area really is and how much room for development you can find there.
    Btw I'll be a freshman at the double bachelor econ&econometrics at EUR this year, so potentially see you soon!

    I have alot of respect for people who pursue a career in economics because about 3 years ago I asked myself this very question and 3 years later I found myself asking the same question. In my first year of university I thought majoring in economics would be a good choice seeing that my aunt has a PhD in it and my mother teaches economics in highschool but in my second year I took it and failed miserably. If you think I changed majors due to this no I didn't. I gave it another chance this year in my third year and well I hated it. I saw no point even trying because I hated it. I became incredibly suicidal and decided to drop out. So now I spend my days figuring out a major that would better suit my life's path. It's looking like marketing but I'll update you in a few months. Goodnight and God bless ✌️

    I studied economics and mathematics in college, and I agree with you! I would add that economics is different than other sciences in that it combines insights from several disciplines, such as psychology , history, math, and statistics. This is because the bottom line is economists are trying to understand how people make choices. Analyzing how these choices affect the market is what makes it economics. I work in software now and I feel that my education prepared me better than most in problem solving and being able to see things from a business perspective and from a technical standpoint. Great post!

      Hi there! What type of Math did you study under Economics?
      I'm preparing for college right now and I'm aiming for a major that will help me land a job in the financial sector. I'm torn between Economics and Accounting at the moment. I really like Econ because it's a broader field (and much more interesting) but I worry that it might not give me the mathematical foundation I need for a job in the financial sector. Is the focus it puts on the sociological and mathematical parts of the economy equal? Or does it focus more on the sociological part?
      I'd really appreciate your input on this :D

      Why

    • @MrMimios
      @MrMimios 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@carmenalcarilla1385because mainstream or neoclassical economics is only fiction based on absurd assumptions which are totally detached from reality, and this makes that branch of economics not only irrelevant to the real world but also dangerous for the overwhelming majority of ordinary people. So, if you decide to study economics make sure that you escape from the neoclassical trap early and devote to studying heterodox economics, such as pos-Keynesian, Modern Monetary Theory, Marxian economics, institutional economics, ecological economics etc.

    I've watched a few videos on "why study economics" & this lines it out very clearly.
    I'm from a computer science background & am interested in Economics.
    I do have all the indicators shown.
    You solve a lot of problems (bugs) in programming. I am not that good in maths, but I remember studying calculus & found a slide online that explains how to apply it. I straight up "mastered" the formula that I had been struggling to remember because it didn't make sense previously.

    I am a PhD in economics professor educated in the UK and USA. First in economics, you need to clearly comprehend major theories, second, you might have some level of mathematical skills when you study Keynesian economics. Third, applying economics theories into real lives is important and required to figure out solutions for social issues and economic policies. Also, when you go for higher degrees, you might decide either microeconomics, macroeconomics, or development economics, or others is suitable for you. I studied Business Economics for an undergraduate program, Development Economics at the University of Sussex in England, and PhD at the University of Sheffield in the UK. Economics can be boring and interesting depending on how your lectures or professors take initiative but usually the economics subject limits their abilities due to its theoretical depths. Anyway, good luck to my Econ students. Any questions regarding economics, you can leave some comments. Good luck again to you all🤞.
