Did Ravens make a smart move using non-exclusive tag on Lamar Jackson? | NFL | SPEAK

  • The Baltimore Ravens placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on QB Lamar Jackson, meaning they will owe him $32.4 million instead of the $45M guaranteed by an exclusive tag. This allows Lamar to seek other teams and the Ravens can either match an offer or allow him to sign elsewhere and receive two-first round picks. Emmanuel Acho, Joy Taylor, LeSean McCoy and Ric Bucher weigh in on whether the Ravens made a smart move tagging Lamar.

      I'm not trying to hate on him as a person. Shady isn't a good commentator. He babels, and his points and counter points are incoherent. Ocho, sucks as well, but it's for different reasons. Ocho is very articulate and gives coherent subtext to his points. However, he sucks because he always pro corporation with his takes. He has no grit and seems disingenuous. Joy is definitely the pro on the panel. Well informed, and when she is subjective, she lays out her opinion with objective reasons. She is a dope commentator.

    • @MSF8637
      @MSF8637 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah the whole idea he could get them three first round picks or they should just pay him whatever is increasingly stupid at this point. They’re not looking logically at this situation. I am a Ravens fan and Lamar has delivered some great moments but that MVP season was 2019, it’s now 2023. He has won a grand total of one playoff game and never even taken the Ravens to an AFC championship game, I could spin that better if he had played well in the playoffs but came up short, that’s not the case. Last, but certainly not least, he has missed ten regular season games the past two seasons due to injury and, to be frank, his play has been erratic the last two seasons. Maybe they win that playoff game against the Bengals with him but we’ll never know because he didn’t play 😕
      I’m NOT saying this is all on Lamar, the Organization has made some terrible mistakes the last couple of seasons with personnel and coaching staff. They should’ve worked out a deal after the 2020 season, that would’ve made the most sense but they didn’t. Now they’re basically going to let another team decide his value, they can either match it or get the two firsts. I’m indifferent at this point, Lamar is a unique talent but he’s also inconsistent and he’s handled this poorly, I’m frankly just sick of the drama between him and the Ravens.

    Plus, don't EVER count out Belichick. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lamar end up in NE.

    • @JeffMiller1984
      @JeffMiller1984 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a few reasons why those QB-needy teams publicly said "we're not interested".
      1. Jackson doesn't have a real agent. His mom is his agent. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but other teams don't have to worry about pissing her off, because they're not going to have to potentially work with her next week when free agency begins and they want to sign other players she represents, because there are none.
      2. Reports of Jackson wanting a Watson-type fully guaranteed contract. Everyone and their dog knew that was a bad contract, and of course it was the worst run organization in the NFL that did it. So now the 31 other teams have to say "we're not doing that", and Lamar is just the first playing getting told "you're not getting that from us".
      3. He can't be relied upon to be there every week. He's missed 5 games in each of the last 2 seasons. He's already a bit undersized for his position and relies heavily on his legs, which is a bad combination when talking about longevity, and he's already missed multiple games in consecutive years and missed a playoff run.
      2 and 3 kinda tie together a bit, but the first reason is probably the biggest reason. This gives the teams all the leverage before negotiations have even started. He'll have to go to them instead of them going to him, and they probably won't send the private jet or cover the airfare and accommodations for him and his entourage. They can play it off as "Just doing our due diligence, but not super interested. We'll take the meeting if you come to us." which will automatically lower what Jackson can demand.
      Jackson will find out his value, but there aren't many QB-needy teams out there that don't have other less costly options both financially and in terms of draft capital, as well as the cap space to take on whatever contract they may agree to.

      @yasssssok7319 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll try to break it down for you. Essentially Lamar, right now, is a pawn being used by the NFLPA. The players association wants Lamar to be the domino that breaks open the door for fully guaranteed contracts. As it stands right now, Deshaun is an outlier. Cleveland is poorly run, and that type of deal will never happen again. However, IF Lamar gets one, now it snowballs into becoming the norm, which is what the NFL doesn't want. Owners also aren't stupid - they're not just gonna give fully guaranteed contracts. If Lamar had an agent, he probably would've signed already. Instead, he's trusting that the Players Association has his best interests, which as of right now, they don't. They just want to use him to open the door for fully guaranteed contracts. If they had his best interests at heart, he'd already have a huge deal, probably just short of Mahomes money.

      She usually does, but in this instance, her take is extremely uninformed. The Non-exclusive tag means that Baltimore ultimately wants to resign Lamar. If they offered him the exclusive tag - it's almost a certainty that they trade Lamar. With the exclusive tag - Lamar will still feel slighted that he didn't get the deal. It's been 2 years of negotiating - nothing would change with the exclusive tag. With the non-exclusive tag, it will help them repair that relationship. They can say, "See we were paying you top dollar. That deal you wanted wasn't out there. We want to take care of you, etc. etc. " The Ravens WANT to keep Lamar and are letting him see what his own worth is. The Ravens will match any offer, it's been reported. If a team gives him a guaranteed deal, they'll match it, they just don't want to be the first to do it - at least that's what's been reported.

      None a single person on this panel spoke logically about this Situation. They all missed the obvious point. OWNERS ARE TRYING TO RESET THE QB MARKET, that simple. That's not accurate at all. If Lamar was on the trading block he'd probably go for three 1sts, three 2nds, and a few later picks, plus a player or two - plus you'd still have to pay him. This situation has NOTHING to do with the picks. The issue is, is that no one will offer a fully guaranteed contract. The Ravens can and will match any offer short of a guaranteed offer. So for the other teams, they're thinking, "Why am I going to do the work to get the contract done if the ravens will just match it?" It's a waste of time. That's the reason so many teams are out.
