He lost rounds. He didn't lose sets. Which is still awesome, but not special in a round Robin format in comparison to an evo winner who goes through in winners bracket the entire way.
Sometimes it was worse than just guessing. A few characters (ibuki, akuma, and yun for example) had setups that were functionally unblockable. They could hit you at the very top center of your hurtbox, and because your hurtbox would change slightly depending on which side you were blocking, it didnt matter which side you chose, they would always hit the other side.

It was noteworthy and tragic that Punk cried at that Evo podium, after feeling like he let himself and everyone in the US down. And, later, Daigo crushed Tokido in a best of 10 and made him cry as well. Huge, emotional moments in Street Fighter.

It's amazing what good sportsmanship does for one's reputation. Personally, I don't really find any tactic to be cheap, since all players have access to the same exploits. You still have to go out there and execute flawlessly to beat the best players in the world, and Tokido has done that consistently. He's an all timer, plain and simple.

People have to stop calling techniques dirty. If you got your ass folded up, you learn the rotation and punish. Sometimes, all it takes is a good eye and the ability to punish quickly then reset.
On the flip side, you have to accept that some things are genuinely cheap/dirty In Dbfz, for example, you used to be able to do dp into assist. A character had an unreactable/invincible command grab that recovered faster than you could punish in most cases. So yea. Having certain mix can also be seen as cheap depending on the game. Having a good eye doesnt matter if its a true 50/50 or 4-way mix. You literally have to guess and most times, being right doesnt get you out of that situation

Coming from combat sport, people hate foot stomping but it is legal and until it is made illegal then it is permissible even if dickish. In juijitsu leg locking was frowned on and is now the biggest part of juijitsu competition. If the rules allow it then do not get mad at the competitors, change the rules.
Every time Akuma drops, I immediately think of Tokido and the hell he's about to unleash.

I think my favorite tokido story is tokido vs daigo post evo 2017. and their eventual rematch where tokido got his payback.

Ultra sf4 tokido akuma was a lot of footsies, Fuudo vs Tokido at canada cup 2015 was such a legendary set.
