    That final message is so strangely powerful in its simplicity. "Fighting games are something so great". Not thanking anyone, not saying anything about himself or his opponents or even anything about the community. He's shifting the attention back to the reason everyone was all packed together in a Las Vegas convention center. Whether a pro, audience member, or that special line in between, everyone in that crowd was there out of a passion for fighting games if absolutely nothing else. This is where the emotionless "Murderface" died, in the recognition that after all is said and done, and even after having the trophy he fought so hard for, all he cares about is just how great fighting games are...

      Itazan is one of my favorite players. He LOVES every second he competes. And he plays a character that's a real crowd favorite when he gets on a roll. Watching him destroy someone with multiple spinning piledrivers in a row, constantly catching them exactly where he wants them and knowing what they're going to try and do to get out of it, is incredibly satisfying.

    Fighting games, in my opinion, have the best entertainment value out of any esport or any regular sport. The emotion, hype, community, and pure skill involved with the sport is something of pure excitement. I have never cheered as loud for baseball, I have never cried over the raw emotional impact for football, I have never jumped out of my seat in awe from a play for basketball, but I have done all these for EVO tournaments. People think that playing video games isn't a sport, but they have never seen an EVO tournament.

    • @BuuhBlocks
      @BuuhBlocks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      As someone who is more of a basketball and football fan than fighting games (tekken is only fighting game I play/watch tourneys) I agree with you somewhat. Its kind d of subjective because everyone is different but the example I'll use is the Cubs. They hadn't won a title in over 100 years. When they finally did win people were crying everywhere. Sports fans get extremely emotional whether it be esports or contact sports just depends on the person

    This is the most beautiful moment of EVO history. Tokido’s victory gave the people so much hope. Even when he had lost his chances over and over again, he’d never given up. He learned from his demons and moved on forward. His career goes something like this, “Hope is what makes us strong. It is why we are here. It is what we fight with when all else is lost.”-Pandora ❤️ Because it’s not about who’s the best. It’s about how much hard work and effort of emotion we give and hold onto in the game. That is why we love you Tokido! Messatsu! 🔥

So when he finally won EVO it was such a heartwarming thing. Can we get the opposite side of the coin: Punk's Legendary EVO run? He made it to finals, and not only did he stay in the winner's bracket, he didn't drop a game the entire way. Literally 2-0'd or 3-0'd every opponent he faced. He may not have won but he made it to grand finals at age 18, that's incredible. He's also incredibly decorated with 21+ tournament wins under his belt despite having not even been a name for a year, all of his accomplishments are in the same window of time. It's amazing.

    I'm so glad Tokido finally got the win he deserved. When I saw this at evo last year, I was a bit torn because I wanted an american to win Street Fighter, but then I had remembered how many near wins Tokido has fought so hard for, and very very consistently, that ended up rejoicing and felt happy for the guy, and the fact that he ended it all with no bitterness really sealed the deal. I was expecting some kind of trash talk, because that's what winners do in fighting games, but this time it was just wholesome.

    Some of my friends invited me to Evo in 2017 despite me not knowing much about the FGC at all. It was pretty amazing to be there in person to witness this. Gave me so much respect for Tokido and all the players there.

    4:06 FGC FYI. 5 Japanese gods: *Bottom left* Onuki ( Or Nuki), *top left* Haitani, *Center Left* Tokido, *Center Right* Daigo, *Far Right* Sakonoko. Also, even with Evo titles under his belt, Tokido still view himself nowhere close to Daigo. If you're curious to know what he meant by that, look for Kemonomichi: Daigo vs. Tokido, a "First to 10" challenge from Tokido to Daigo. But, ganbare yo, Tokido.

      Damn, cool pic! I'm a big fan of Haitani, but man, if you make them fight randomly to each other, those 5 are equal. They are also the best in their own fighting game. Haitani/Sako(Vampire Saviour), Tokido(SNK vs Capcom, SFV), Daigo(SF4), Nuki(SF 3rd Strike). In my opinion, Nuki has the potential to be the strongest among them.

      Nuki and Daiko have quite a long story together, they where practicaly the ones that put Competitive Fighting games on the map, back in the Darkstalkers era.

    Oh man, story time. So I was there for that and it had to be the single most hype FGC moment I was able to be a part of. As my buddy and I were leaving Mandalay and headed back to our room at the Luxor we couldn't stop talking about that final match. We both expected so much out of Punk and to be fair, that grand finals lineup REALLY pushed the East vs West narrative to get everyone excited. We talked about how we couldn't believe Punk could choke so hard and about how it probably felt to him like he let down his country considering all of USA chanting, flags, and the massive crowd. We kinda joked around about punk a little, not in a malicious way, but like "wow that must really suck to be him". We finally get to our elevator and turn around and go figure Punk was literally right behind us the entire time. I've never seen someone look so disappointed in themselves, and I know he heard us talking about him. We stood in the elevator together for the most awkward couple minutes of my life. My buddy and I looked at eachother but decided we couldn't really say anything and he cried in the corner with one of his hypemen. I felt so bad, the dude is really a champ and at that age that kind of pressure is enormous. I really wanted to say something encouraging and I kinda regret not showing some support, I hope he realized this moment wouldn't have meant is much if he weren't already considered a champion. Punk if you're reading this. I'm sorry man, I was going to offer you a drink but if I were in your position I figured I would have rather some random in the elevator not say shit.

    Tokido's spectacular victory had the consequence of breaking Punk and shattering his aura of invincibility. Sure, he had lost before (I recall two consecutive defeats again Snakeyez on the grand finals of two tourneys) and he kept winning after (although mostly minor and local tournaments where most of his foes weren't on the upper levels), but never with such a hopeless defeat. The absolute hurricane he was on the first half of the year disappeared and his latter half was... average, which is a thing Punk is not at all. His Capcom Cup run was unremarkable (although not as bad as Infiltration's had been the year before) and it remains to see if he can recover for the new season to take his rightful place in the SF pantheon.

    Tokido crushing punk's cocky ass is such a beautiful poetic justice; he taunted him, perfected him and raging demon him, he pretty much humiliated punk like he humiliated and taunted so many innocent bystanders. Beautiful story!
