** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:

    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

In Doublin, Ireland on June 18th, 1875 a fire broke out in a distillery causing some 5000 barrels of whiskey to burst sending thousands of gallons of whiskey flooding through the streets, on fire and picking up all bits of charred wood and ash along the way. The citizens were so preoccupied by the free whiskey that 100% of the 13 deaths were due to alcohol poisoning. That whiskey, being both literally on fire and having charcoal and ash swept along it probably still tasted less like fire than Laphroaig 10

SO happy to see you guys doing Laphroaig!! Just got my first bottle of the 10 recently and loved the process of working through the smoke to get to the more nuanced flavors. I also had a mooch experience at a restaurant that was mistakenly shipped the Triple Wood instead of the 10, so they were charging the price for the 10, but pouring the TW!! LOVED IT!!

@@Bawrabawla I started with the 10 and I didn't regret it. The other ones add more complexity but I am happy that I started with what I consider the basis of that distilery. Tonight y'all made me drag out the 1/4 vs 10 yr cask strength vs triple wood. Thank you. The triple wood is surprisingly sweet with sherry. I hadn't noticed that before. The lagavullin 16 lead me down this rabbit hole, but thanks to Rex and Daniel I've escaped with more knowledge and palate education than before as well as a buzz. Just like Rex, I'm afraid I've reached my limit for tasting this evening. Thanks again for helping me grow my palate and knowledge of this wonderful beverage. :-)

Hi Dan and Rex, thanks for the great tasting video! We do whiskey and tea pairings and the Laphroaig 10 is one of our go-tos, however, our upcoming tasting is in Quebec and it is not yet available there. They do however have both the Select and the Quarter Cask, So I am looking at either of these as a 'substitute' for the 10 year. I have already done my pairing and tasting research with the 10 year and I am hoping the quarter cask will be an easy swap in :) What we do is select teas from our inventory and we have folks sip a given tea, then sip the paired whiskey, then return to the tea. The transformation is exquisite! Based on the tasting notes in your video, it sounds like either the Select or QC might actually do even better with our tea pairing. Your video was extremely helpful. While we do have smokey teas, we have found that Shu Pu'er tea pairs really nicely with Laphroaig! Happy sipping and I'll let you know how the pairings turn out. Cheers, Phil

Today was the day! I have been slowly building myself up to the 10. Redbreast 12 Cask Strength is my favorite whisk(e)y at the moment and i've been inching closer and closer through the flavor range hoping it would help me enjoy the 10 more. The first time I tried a peated scotch at a tasting I almost threw the glass back at the jerk who thought any human should drink such a thing. After getting used to Oban 14 which I now really love I decided it was time to take the jump. I was so pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. I won't go as far to say I'm a peathead now but it gives me a whole new flavor profile to expand into that I actually look forward to. Thanks for all the advice on how to build up to this monster!

I've gotten quite a few different scotch single malts over the years, but I've never really treated the whiskeys as anything but cocktail/coke fodder. I recently traveled down the rabbit hole that is youtube whiskey, came across the Whiskey Vault/Tribe and was inspired by Rex and Daniel to properly enjoy my whiskey.
I had bottles of Glen Fiddich and Glen Deveron on hand to sip neat, enjoyed it and because Laphroaig kept coming up in their videos, I decided to give it a try today. A Laphroaig 10 year.
Maybe I should have watched a video on smoky whiskeys, maybe I should have done this while I was still smoking (I gave up cigarettes/cigars 6 years ago for vaping) but one sip of the Laphroaig and I was re-evaluating my life choices. I can understand how it would go with a cig or cigar but for non-smokers (my wife had the same reaction), it was really off-putting.
Going to have to look for smokey whiskey cocktail recipes now...

Ryan H I think your initial instinct still holds up. I have been drinking Laphroaig for decades and can tell you that I’m not alone when I say that Select does not belong in the lineup. It is a much more muted and less nuanced whiskey, that really isn’t what most Laphroaig enthusiasts would expect from their beloved distillery. Seems like an entry whiskey for those who are not comfortable with an intense Islay experience.

The 10 Original Cask Strength is truly a masterpiece. It is absolutely worth the price difference and its unique characteristics will be appreciated immediately upon first tasting.

@@ophnell56 Lagavulin is way more complex and way more balanced. If I were to write a review about whisky in some magazine I would definitely give the win to the Lagavulin, but personally I really love the Laphroaig 10. It's so clear, smoke and iodine, it does pretty much only those 2 things, but it does them so well.

The Sultan is disappointed you have not featured the Springbank distillery, they do everything from peating and milling in-house, plus you have the different brands such as Longrow and Hazelburn. It be a really wonderful distillery to feature!

Just bought a bottle of Laphroaig Select from Sainsburys ( super market ) for £23.00 and its amazing, usaully a Ardbeg fan and this is very simular to AN OA and hell of a lot cheaper since you guys put big tax on importing whisky in to USA, and we all thank you for doing it as whisky is now so cheap in UK now, as there selling it all off

Lore, Quarter, Cask St, Select, 10. Can’t get Triple Wood or Cairdeas in my area. But the Lore for obvious reasons isn’t gonna be my daily drinker. I’d be a happy man w a bottle of Quarter Cask on the self all day long!

Unrelated to this video, but a question for the MBs… just purchased a Heaven Hill BIB bourbon when visiting Kentucky, as they are doing away with this bottling apparently. My question is, it being a screwtop instead of cork, is shelf life of an unopened bottle still somewhat unlimited, or should this not be put into the “collector stash”? Any information regarding this is extremely appreciated! Thanks guys!

2 questions: 1. is it the Laphroaig in Peat Monster that gives it the cigarette ash in the finish? 2. I don't get that finish in the triple wood, are there any other expressions that minimize that?

Daniel, i started on Monkey shoulder and loved it. Today i saw a bottle of Laphroaig select for £23 and bought it.... Everybody told me Islay would hit me around the face and spank me but I LOVE the smokey flavour, except the Iodine at the end is something i'm not a fan of, (perfectly drinky, the whole bottle went in one night)......... what Islay (or not) is smokey without the medicinal note? I feel like i know what i want now and just want a Peaty whiskey without the medicinal notes. Thanks man

Daniel, so I've had 3 bottles of Lore, and it's my all time favorite liquid. I have always looked for Ardbeg Dark Cove, but cannot find one. How do they compare? Which do you prefer? I'd assume Lore, but interested in the tasting notes of the Ardbeg.
