I love that you guys specifically bring up the difficulty of describing Laphroaig, as one lover of the quarter cask to another. My friends think I'm crazy because although I try to pin point flavours (which I realize some are right, some are wrong after watching you guys), I most easily describe my whisky through experience/feeling. Laphroaig quarter cask tastes like the middle of winter, trapped inside, little house on the prairie style. But it has a bit of a ghost haunting in the background...and just a bit of that feeling where you know you've drank just a hair above your normal tolerance and you go outside to take a leak on a tree in the late Fall and you can smell everything in fuller detail than if you were completely sober. Haha, I don't know, I can be oddly specific. Love you guys, cheers!

As a cultured bourbon drinker I tried Laphroaig for the first time .. remember it well. First glass ...ouch bro...second shot..mmmmm, not so bad. By the third I was hooked... took a little to understand the peat smoke and aging process..I'm hooked for life, nothing finer... this from a Laguevallan fan.

I love everything about Laphroaig. Especially what their marketing department is doing with the Friends of Laphroaig program. When you buy a bottle, you sign up on the website and claim a one square foot piece of land which gets you a free dram as rent when you visit. They also have a great opinions section on website where people post their opinion of the taste. Some really great ones like "a bit of seagull armpit" and "smoked medicine with a bandaid finish". I actually met John Campbell as well as John Maclellan at an event in SF a few years ago. Drinking whiskies with those two is one of my best memories.

Laphroaig 10 was my gateway to Islay Scotch. It was a harsh mistress at first but now I can't have enough of her embrace. What I could not get over in the beginning was that medicinal band aide smell and tastes. But what got me was the salty after taste, I love salty fresh brine from shell fish.

Tried Laphroaig Quarter Cask for the first time today, and I'm absolutely in love! Dalmore 12 may still be my favorite scotch, but this Laphroaig is blowing me away with the amount of flavor it has mixed with that peat smokiness. Phenomenal stuff.

So I bought a bottle of this and hated it the first 2 glasses I had it, truly thought I made a mistake... But it's now rainy and high 50s low 60s in Michigan , I have a fire going, and I poured myself a glass of quarter cask. My opinion changed completely; it's amazing and has great depth.

Just tried Laphroaig for the first time, and I really enjoyed it. My wife laughed at my expressions as I took my first sip. It felt like a roller coaster of flavors from the punch in the mouth of the peat to the sweeter flavors underneath. I'm still new in my whisky adventures so I was worried I wasn't ready for Laphroaig but now it's one of my favorites.

New to this channel, and I just wanted to say that this is exactly what happened to me. I 've tried to enter in the whisky world, and searching on the internet I saw that Laphroaig was a fine one, so when I was in a freeshop at the airport I bought it. Later when I drank it, it was a kick in the face. I was discouraged thinking that maybe whisky wasn't for me, but this video gave me a new perspective. So I'm going to look for a beginner-Whisky to start over.

Well done, gentlemen. A great old sailing, rowing, boatbuilder, cycling, high level craftsman artisan intellect friend said (as we shared my bottle of Redbreast) of his younger years, " I got through a winter in a garret in Baltimore with a case of Laphroig." In foul weather, Islay is the potion - Talisker, Highland Park, & Pultney work too.

My first time tasting a scotch was when I was handed a little disposable cup after jamming at a summer fiddle camp. It was filled with a pale yellow spirit that had so much flavor and character. It was diesel fuel, sea grass, and bacon. It wasn’t like bourbons where i had to search deep for what the whiskey tasted like. The spirit told me straight up what it was all about and it was of course… Ardbeg 10 lol.
I feel like people think i’m crazy for beginning my whisky love with Ardbeg but man, you’ll never pick up an Islay and say “it just tastes like alcohol.” For better or worse, you’re gonna get a flavor experience haha

  • @erik683
    @erik683 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I was lucky enough to start my Scotchventure with Doublewood 12 and loved it. I got this, my first Islay, because I just wanted to dive in peat first! I must say this punched me in the face with flavors and smoke. It was such and experience. Can’t wait for my Christmas bottle of Lagavulin!

I didn't like other whisk(e)ys before laphroaig. I don't drink much in general but I couldn't really get past the alcohol. But then a few years ago I found your channel and bought my dad a bottle of laphroaig 10 for Christmas (whoops, started a little strong there...) and he poured me a glass, and I *loved* it. I used to come home after long camping trips and just smell my hoodie cause it still smelled like the campfire, and this reminded me so much of that. Laphroaig was my gateway whisky :P

  • @Bleckman666
    @Bleckman666 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I would describe Laphroaig as caught somewhere in between the peat marshes beside the road that cuts straight across the island from Port Ellen to Bowmore, via the gentle rolling hills where the sheep graze beside the spring from where they get their water, to the weathered old distillery pier that stretches out into the bay; a rich and welcoming flavour for the "spirited folk of oak and smoke".

Although I actually do work in marketing (as a layout artist, not a copywriter), that description, apart from the phrase "spirited folk of oak and smoke" which is the "Friends Of Laphroaig" motto, is in fact based on my own experiences while visiting the island of Islay with my 2 cousins in the summer of 2015. Sadly we did not have time to vist Bruichladdich/Port Charlotte or Kilchoman, but managed to squeeze in Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Bowmore, Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig. A trip I will never forget! :)

I went from finishing Aberlour 12 sherry cask to this one...NEXT DAY and I was like "WHAT the hell just got burned in my apartment????" I was sniffing around the computer and trying to find a cause of that smell... I turned around... went back to a whiskey in a glass (didn't taste it yet) and I was blown :O that was dramatic for me....but... I fell in love INSTANTLY...that smoke, peat, sweet and salt, and a bit citrusy taste...just AMAZING....but I was smelling it too much and my head hurt after that:) Next day I was more "detained" on a nose and I just enjoyed my new experience :) again LOVE IT!

A bit late on the comments here. I've watched many of your videos, but this one always hits home. I had no friends that were into Scotch, and certainly not Islays. Long story short, I went to my local shop and picked a bottle at random, knowing nothing about it. Laphroaig 10. It was exactly as described here, a punch in the face that I was determined to like. More bottles than I would like to count later, it is hands down, my personal go-to when I'm looking for an Islay to relax with (if you can relax with one). Fantastic video. Love the content (it helps me fill out my personal stash with good recommendations). Cheers!

That one's my favorite. Where I previously worked we had an arrangement with our office in England that when their sales guys came over here for training they'd bring us scotch. They must have kept track because we never got the same bottle twice. Quarter Cask was by far my favorite. I love the way the aftertaste goes from smoky to sweet and back. Love it. As for starting someone out on scotch, I started with Glenlivet. I can't go back after trying Quarter Cask.

I have to say, sometimes going with the deep dive is more effective than going slow and steady. When I started to drink whisky, I started with some blended ones, Irish, and some less harsh Scotch. I didn'T enjoy the experience at all. Then I had Laphroaig 10, and I got hooked into Islay whisky. Since then I started explorign the whole spectrum.

just grabbed a bottle of laphroaig 10 as congratulations for moving in to my new apartment (after only trying glenfiddich, bushmills and a glass of red breast in a bar at some point). Honestly the smoke and campfire smashing my nose and tongue in has never been so welcome. Plus the meaty cheese notes in the finish are incredible. Gotta say, after those nice notes and easy to drink ones this was exactly what I needed. Cant wait to see which whiskey ends up in my glass next because damn its going to be one hell of an adventure.

In my following my friends that have tried all agreed upon it being best described as licking a barbecue. Having tried 5 other whiskies and developing some taste a 4 weeks later I fell in love with it. There has to be a laphroaig on my shelf now at any time.

It stood on my shelf laughin every time I glanced at it, like it knew I hated something really excellent. Two whole years must have flied by before I manned up to confront it again, brave as a medieval knight in shiny armor. As the first drops hit my tounge, I wept like a puppy with my tail between my legs, as the memories of awful taste got confirmed. I am no spitter or waster, so I swallow and took a big breath of air. Warm as a lady's arch of the back, full as Santas sled on christmas eve, and smooth as a baby piglet, everything made sense. I had missed out for two years, and almost for the rest of my life. Laphroaig is still laughing at me from my shelf, but at lest I can enjoy it now.

I completely understand your experience. I had Laphroaig 10 as part of a flight of single malts at the Rose and Crown pub in Epcot about a year ago. I thought it tasted like old 1960’s cough syrup. After I found Daniel and Rex on TH-cam I just decided to try it again. Best purchase decision I’ve made lately was to try it again. It still gives me that cough syrup on the nose, but now it’s sooooo much more. I get roasted ham and salt. I bow to the Vault!

Loved the 10 year. Just bought this by mistake, actually. The first pour was a little intense, but I just gave myself a small follow up, and I think I see a worthy challenge here.

Drinking some Laphroaig Quarter Cask right now. I love this stuff. Really nicely balanced smoky/sweet flavour, and remarkably smooth for its high alcohol content. I definitely agree that this is not the best introductory whisky, though. I love it because I can appreciate what good scotch is, but I might go with a Bushmills or something a little more approachable for someone who's never gotten into whisky before.

Laphroaig QC was the third Scotch I've tried and by far my favorite (other 2 being Glenfiddich 14 and 15).

Laphroaig 10 was the one that convinced me about whisky. Before that I had had some good punchy blends and a Hibiki, but it was the Laphroaig 10 that got me to stay

Just had my first sips of the quarter cask. The second the scent it’s your nose you’re certain your house is burning down. Incredibly strong wood and smoke aroma. It takes a little getting used to. i didn’t expect that smell and flavor at all (which is why i did a TH-cam search after smelling it and before tasting it). But after a glass or two, you really begin to appreciate its unique and distinct flavor. It’ll put hair on your chest if you don’t already have it. And if you do, that shit is about to get a whole lot thicker.

It’s interesting that although I have bought multiple whisky’s recently I find myself going back to the peated whisky’s.. Even going so far as to add some laphroaig to other whiskies I am drinking. If I love highland park 12 and laphroaig what should I try next?

It’s interesting, my first really positive experience with whisky was Laphroaig 10. Such an amazing drink. All my favourite whiskies are Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Octomore and Talisker. At its best with 80%dark chocolate after a steak dinner (or any dinner!)

My first Whiskey was (old)Laphroaig 10y and oh boy i had some problems drinking it. But now (~25 bottles later) it is more like baseline for me, the daily whiskey and Ardbeg Uigeadail is my fav now.

Great review, guys :) Just curious, I really want to try Laphroaig 10 and the Quarter Cask but I also want to try Ardbeg 10. In both your opinions, do you guys prefer Laphroaig over Ardbeg? Also, do you think Laphroaig Quarter Cask has better notes than the Laprhoaig 10?

I've just gotten ahold of Laffy Quarter Cask, and compared it side by side with the Laffy 10. They are both really, really good. The Laffy QC might be a bit more citrusy, with more vanilla. But wow aren't they both fabulous? QC is smoother, less medicinal than 10.

The Scots are geniuses. They figured out a way to barbecue whisky. Smokey! Whether you've always loved it or are new to Laphroaig, it's the best Scotch you'll ever drink.

    First of all, great channel!
And second, I love!, Laphroaig. I have 4 bottles in my liquor cabinet. Laphroaig 10yr, Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Laphroaig Select & Laphroaig PX Cask. I didn't know that so much of the taste was depending on how you drank it before I saw you Daniel teaching Jason and Brian from The modern Rogue. I will have myself a afternoon just trying all the different selections on how to drink it on all the Laphroaig i have, thanks so much for the excellent knowledge!
Question; I got 3 selections of "Whisk(e)y water" from my girlfriend to go with 3 different location types of Whisk(e)y. One bottle Islay water, 1 bottle Highland water and 1 bottle of Speyside water and i think that it's the water they use for making different Whisk(e)y's. So have you done that aswell and how much of a different did you taste comparing to "regular" water. Is it a taste differential and can you describe it? :)

    • @WhiskeyVault

      YES LAPHROIG. It's awesome.
The water idea is amazing. In theory it allows you to add water to the whisky from the same source the whisky distiller used. I'd have to AB compare, but I love the idea.

I went from Glenfiddich 12 to Ardbeg 10. Is that bad? I really like the flavour profile of both whiskies ... I've never had a Laphroaig, but I'm interested. Understanding, early, the opposite sides of the whisky spectrum helped me a lot in identifying some distinct flavours that're hinted at or improved upon in other brands.

A friend of mine wanted to taste Scotch. He went out and bought Ardbeg 10 for his FIRST taste. This was good for me because I then received the bottle because he thought it had gone bad. I tried to explain it was 'Supposed' to taste like that. However, as I learned about peated Scotch I have noticed: Ardbeg tastes like Bandaids, and Laphroaig tastes like campfire with water thrown on it. I like campfire much more than bandaids.

Another oddball here. I Didn't like whiskey until I had a Laphroaig triple wood. And, I like it so much, I went to Islay. Now I like non Islay whiskey, but it was the gateway.
