  • Surprise, surprise - the gents have had this in the Vault for a while and have never reviewed it. Could it be an elaborate excuse to drink a bunch of Islay on a Monday? We can only speculate.
Big thanks to Michael Schneider for the bottle. Cheers ya M.B.!

Aye, I'll always tune in for whiskey's that actually exists. Like I'm sure all those regional small bourbon distillers make good stuff, but unless I can drink it I don't care much for a review of it.

The quarter cask is actually my favorite Laphroaig. It still carries enough peatiness to be a Laphroaig but it has an extra hidden layer of fruity sweetness hidden deep within that I just love, even more than the 10

Love this scotch! My neighbor introduced me to the QC. Went out and picked up a bottle. It has a sweet honey/vanilla taste upfront with an ashy fire log on the finish. Love how it transitions from sweet to smoky fire log! Great fall single malt when sitting around an evening campfire! Can't wait to compare this one to the Laphroaig Cask Strength.

The Laphroaig 10 used to be pretty good too some 5-10 years back. Now its a little on the sweet side with the peaty flavour feeling less like your mouth and sinuses being invaded by an angry smouldering block of wood and ash.
I know a lot of people that couldnt stomach the amount of peat and the smell that, that particular whisky had but I loved it because that was its unique character

Poured myself a taste to enjoy while watching this review. I'm unable to pull all the flavors out of it like you guys, but it is definitely softer than 10 with more wood influence. I enjoy the bigger flavors of the 10, and it costs less.

The obvious right way to go is call it "Ye Olde Cashgrab" bourbon. Then include the cleverest but completely honest description of what you're doing, but make it clever enough so that the bottle is collectible, not the bourbon. Think 'Pet Rock". Expose every lie the industry tells, and you'll rock it.

This is how I've described it to people for years: It's like if someone took the hull of an old fishing boat, burned it, buried in peat for 6 months, and was now gently trying to see how big of a chunk of it they could fit in your mouth. Personally, it's an experience I love.

    • @Ebvardh

First peated whisky I had was Lagavulin, and I describe it as if someone washed out an ashtray with acetone and use a gas station attendant’s boot to scrub it off. People don’t believe me when I say it’s actually delicious.

Massive fan of the Quarter cask. Its such a shame we only get the 40% version of Laphroaig 10 over here in the UK. Personally I find the sweetness of the 10 a little artificial somehow where the QC just gives a blast of sweet caramel just after you swallow. Love love love Laphroaig and very interested to try their new sherry cask.

It's funny watching those early vids, with them really establishing their characters. They spent more time on the exposition of character (somm jokes, mooch jokes) than on the actual review content.

I bought myself a 10 as my first islay/heavy smoke whiskey. The smell was pervasive, it lingered in the room for hours. I felt like I was at a bbq restaurant or smth. The taste was only smoke. Only smoke. My friend said he thought the 10 it was underaged, but I don't have much to compare to.
1,5 years later, I don't know if it has mellowed in the bottle or if I've gotten used to it. But it's much more pleasant. Very smokey nose still, but with a hint of sea-breeze, and some other very faint scents. Maybe the bottle has lost potency, but I sure like it better now.

I never had enough money to get any expensive whiskeys. This one and the Aberfeldy 12 Year old are the most I could even afford. (EDIT: Well, in this case my mother afforded this one, but you know what I mean) I got this one on my 25th birthday (08.09.2022 DD/MM/YYYY) from my mother as my "Final Birthday present". Except for the Aberfeldy I have only drank cheap whikeys before. Ones, that were barely bearable without cola or something else.. This one on the other hand, tasted INCREDIBLE. I'm obviously not someone who knows much about whiskey. But for people that are in a similar boat as me, I can only recommend this one. If you want to taste a whiskey that isnt... lets be frank, "shit" try this one.
I remember REALLY liking the Aberfeldy 12 Year old as well, but I was 18 when I tried that one (Legal here in germany) so I dont quite remember much of the taste 7 years later.
The Lapghroaig Quarter Cask on the other hand I can whole heartedly recommend. I'm drinking it while writing this comment.
(Just a quick heads up, I appreciate everyone that can correct any mistakes in my english. Having someone else tell me my mistakes makes it far easier to remember them.)
Edit 2: I'm drinking this while hearing those two guys' (sorry, first time here so I dont know your name) review, and surprisingly, I gotta agree with most of the descriptions about this whiskey they put out. I always thought (and by now I reget to have thought that way) that most alcohol (similar to coffee) reviews are mostly buzzwords. But I gotta say, at least to a certain point, I can see where they are coming from. It's a very surprising revalation.
Edit 3: All my general english mistakes will fall under this one. 1. (I wrote wear instead of were. Noticed that one myself fortunately)
Edit 4: Huh. Its kinda unexpected to me, that they liked the 10 Year old more than the quarter cask. Before deciding on this one as a present I read a bunch of reviews, and found that many people (maybe not the right ones? Or maybe exactly THE right ones. Tastes differ.) thought that the quarter cask was better. Thats why I specifically wanetd the quarter cask instead of the 10 Year old that was 6€ cheaper. The next time I have enough money to get a decent whiskey, I will wait. I wont just get the quarter cask. I'll save up to get both and compare.
Edit 5: Fck. Me. I never had alcohol that tasted this good. Note so self: Even though it tastes good, maybe not get hammered. I'm glad I dont have lectures tomorrow.
On a final note: If you drink, may you drink with us. Thats exactly what I did. Prost. As we say here in germany my friends.
Edit 7, and hopefully the final one. After watching the Aberfeldy 12 Year old review it seems that, even the food you had before, can dramatically impact the taste. I had a pizza with REALLY spicy sauce on a few hours ago (the sauce from the 2x spiciest korean noodles) so that might have impacted my taste buds more than I thought. So take my comment with a grain of salt (or spice HAHA). That being said, The quarter cask is so good, that I'm hammered AF from the second time in my life that I tasted proper whikskey. Think of that what you will. Quarter Cask is awesome, and so are you.

I like the QC a lot better than the standard 10 year but man do I wish I could find a bottle of the cask strength these days.

Daniel, check out episode 49 from 2017. You reviewed Quater Cask Laphroig. Have you been drinking?

For the price this has to be one of the best accessible Islay whiskys going but also a whisky which stands alone in taste.

I LOVE Laphroaig! Unfortunately I did not have any Quarter Cask to drink with this review, so it may be sacrilege, but I combined Laphroaig 10, a Woodford Reserve Double Oaked distillers pick, and Two Stacks cask strength Irish Whiskey (130 proof) to up the proof.... Very scientific and i'm pretty sure exactly the same as Quarter Cask...

    Olde Whittington Rye.
An ancient recipe owned by a huge corporation, we bought some of their product then finished with an incredibly simple watering down technique.
Est about 3 weeks ago, never family owned.

This dram reminds me of Halal Guy’s Red Hot Sauce. No complaints though, this is my go-to Islay whiskey.

If you think quarter Cask is soft, I'd love to hear opinions on Four Oak. It's hard to find, but man is it a gem

this one is insanely good, such a step up from the 10 and not that much more expensive, very intense. its like the most intoxicating centuries untouched honey made by ancient hornets high on ancient steroids. the heavy, oily sweetness clings to your tongue and throat and doesnt let go and suddenly you get punched by the smoke and the barbecue and the maritime seaweed flavor and the light undertones of disinfectant which you rub on your cut up hand after you smashed your fist through a window in blind rage thinking about 3 past failed relationships
    a great dram

Episode 49, 4 years ago and the video named Tribe Week: Laphroaig 10, Quarter Cask, Select, Cairdeas Quarter Cask, Cairdeas Madeira, Triple Wood. You've already reviewed this years ago :P

In the UK the 10 is 40% abv 🤯 the quarter cask at 48% is imo is a better drink and much better value, I do however prefare the cask strength 10 yo, it's such a shame that the rest of the world gets to enjoy a better version of the original 10 despite it being made just up the road.
