I’ve always maintained, since first hearing “ Levee” when released, all those years ago, that this Zeppelin reworking of the original piece should remain untouched, for all time. It’s a pinnacle achievement for the group, with an important back story about the Great Flood along the Mississippi River in 1927. This event sent the Federal Gov. into high gear, bringing the Army Corp of Engineers in to establish a Fed. Levee System to control the River. Until now I could never imagine anyone capturing this spirit or intensity of a die that had been cast. I was wrong! To all the remarkable artists here, Bravo! A special shout out to Derick and Susan. Her vocal was spiritual. Lastly, the legend that is John Paul Jones, adding your talents is the credibility this version needed, and deserves. Let’s all remember the charitable reason for the cover, a most worthy cause.

No one seems to mention the full on power of the message of the song and more than ever its nothing to smile about given what we are doing to our plant and its affecting all countries and cultures across the earth not tomorrow or in twenty years but right here and now. "When the Levee Breaks" is a country blues song written and first recorded by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy in 1929. The lyrics reflect experiences during the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Citizens of earth Wake Up

Love you guys! I grew up with Led Zep, saw them live in 1977. This all might have been passed on, but, if not, JP Jones was also the one playing mandolin when you hear it in songs like Going to California, Hey Hey, What Can I Do, etc. And all of these years I thought When The Levee Breaks was a original Zep song, and just recently discovered Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy wrote and recorded it in 1929! ❤

You don’t often see Uralic people represented, so it was nice to see Elle Márjá Eira from Kautokeino ( Guovdageaidnu),Norway.. which is in the old Finnmark county. She performs in the band Snoweye with John Paul Jones and Lucy Parnell ( Led Zeppelin, Them Crooked Vultures). I have Uralic/Finno-Ugric ancestry myself and a lot of cousins in Troms and Finnmark.

So lovely to see you "kids" appreciate this song. I'm 68 years old and was 15 when I first heard it after bringing Zeppelin's album home from the record store (which I still have). Originally inspired by The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and composed by two African-American blues musicians, Leppelin's rendition was a tribute to those artists. Most people don't understand that this cover by John Paul Jones and Company, and the accompanying video, is to bring attention to Climate Change and how quickly a single weather event can alter our homes and lives. That was the point of the original song: one day the Sun is shining and life is wonderful; then nature comes along and has the final say in so many people's fates. All they can do is sit down and cry. They know their lives will never be the same. Now we are witnessing these occurrences on an unimaginable scale almost daily. Metaphorically speaking, the levees are breaking all over the world, and it may be too late to stop these catastrophes.

There is a lot to react to from her/that band. The guitar solo was Derek Trucks who also happens to be the nephew of drummer Butch Trucks of The Allman Brothers Band.

Music has a way of uniting people, few songs Like "When the Levee Breaks" have a way of uniting different generations and different cultures. This song happens to be a rework of the 1929 original release by Kansas Joe Mccoy and Memphis Minnie about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927; the most destructive river flooding in U.S. history. Having great musicians come together to share their music knowledge into a song with such powerful meaning is what makes this video one of the greatest I've ever seen.

“The woman” you asked about is famous Susan Tedeski, married to guitarist Derek Trucks, also playing in this video. A little clarification from a previous comment; Trucks did join the later incarnation of The Allman Brothers Band, but was not born until 9 years after the song Jessica was released on the Brothers and Sisters LP. His uncle, Butch Trucks played drums on that album. I’ve seen both Susan and Derek perform separately, really before either had much notoriety or were romantically linked.
I posted this Playing for Change video the day it premiered while telling my friends it has to be the best one yet of the numerous collaborations they’ve produced. I’ was not surprised you were so enamored of the Led Zeppelin cover a few days ago. The insane rhythm, fills, and backbeat from John Bonham and John Paul Jones with the wailing of Jimmy Page’s guitar, and piercing vocals of Robert Plant bring out goosebumps every time I listen. To borrow from the script of Cameron Crowe’s seminal rock&roll film, Almost Famous…Incendiary!!

Totally enjoyed the reaction and completely agree with the analysis about the mix of contributions and cultural blending. That kind of mix is one of the key differentiators that Led Zeppelin, with John Paul Jones as one of their most insightful innnovators, always brought. The way they blend cultural sounds, Delta Blues, Moroccan, heavy-bass rhythm, Hindu influences, etc. have never been done as well as they do it. This particular arrangement really does have a unifying effect on listeners.

I’ve grown up listening to Zep. Bob an Bonzo are from my neck of the woods and I’ve queued for a coffee with Bob at the Molineux on the odd occasion whilst watching our beloved Wolves. Never seen them live (god dam it) but seen them in their individual ventures. And with that, I’m like most, I have my favourite tracks and from across different times and renditions but this version (of one of my top 5 favourites) is an absolute mind blowing version. My dad played the harp and I too gave it a go as kid but kicking a ball around a muddy pitch and chasing girls took precedence - mistake, big mistake. Oh how I wish I could play like the guys in this amazing version of one of my top 5 fave tracks by Zep. JPJ please extend this venture to other classics, if you need 4 others to start the ball rolling happy to give you a hand.
