I always thought 'Matthew & Son' - one of his mid-60s chart hits - was pretty exceptional, both for its musical form and subject matter. Interestingly, it proved quite influential in the longer term. Echo and The Bunnymen's frontman, Ian McCulloch, asked the musician playing the intro to their single, 'The Cutter' to improvise something based on part of the song, while Tears For Fears 'appropriated' another section of it for their song 'Mad World' - which Stevens would himself highlight, by singing some of its lyrics while performing 'Matthew & Son', in his later concert appearances.

Father and Son - Cat Stevens
This is one of Yusuf''s most meaningful songs. It is a conversation between a father and his son as they grow throughout their years, the father gives advice and the son rejects it. The son needs to break away from the family and the father does not understand why. It reminds us that we all have our parts as parents and children and eventually the roles are reversed when the son becomes a father facing his own son's rejection.

Literally the entire “Tea for the Tillerman” album is 🔥
The whole thing. Even if you don’t react to it, you should listen to it because it will go on your playlist forever.

Cat Stevens plays rhythm guitar on his records. His long time friend Alun Davies is the guy who plays all the lovely lead guitar parts and is still playing alongside Cat today. He never gets the credit.

The album this song comes from, Tea For The Tillerman, is a perfect experience from start to finish -- with amazing songs like Sad Lisa, Wild World, Miles From Nowhere, Father and Son, & Into White -- you would love the whole thing, and it's something I've listened to as a child and continue to listen as an adult.

I was a 10 year old boy and had 3 older sisters and one of them bought Cat Stevens albums, it was the first "modern" music I ever heard. I loved it especially the sound of the acoustic guitar which my parents eventually gave me one on my 14th birthday. His album Tea For The Tillerman was my favourite of his back then.

Have a soft spot for Cat Stevens as it’s what my dad would listen to on our family car trips as a kid.
Dad is still alive, but we don’t often do the family trips etc now
He’s got so many good songs 😄 “Sitting” is a personal favourite

The remarkable thing is with the exception of Morning has broken, every Cat Stevens song you've listened to so far is from the same album namely "Tea for the Tillerman". I'm so happy that you're falling in love with him. I hope there are songs like this for you because every time I hear one of his songs it takes me to a place, a fond memory.

Did they react to Morning Has Broken? I must have missed that. And was pushing for them to react to a specific concert version that's on YT, that sounds like they're in a recording studio, pure and perfect.

Cat Stevens is a genius. A singular talent and a man who walks his own path. I have so much respect for this man. His music for Harold and Maude is a HUGE part of what is one of the most odd and heart warming romantic comedies ever made. You should watch this movie, it is unlike anything you have or ever will see. Directed by Hal Ashby. I saw this at the movies and it stands with 2001, A Clockwork Orange and M*A*S*H as one of my most memorable cinema experiences.

Loved Cat Stevens back in the day. Saw him in concert in '72. A relatively small, movie theater sized venue. After about 45 minutes, he became annoyed with the audience for being too noisy as I recall. He then walked off the stage and never came back. We weren't happy.
