Those girls in Jamaica were standing in front of Bob Marley's old house, by the way. Playing For Change is a phenomenon that has brought musicians and listeners together around shared love for great songs for a long time now, and I suggested this video to you because it seemed to be right up your alley, so to speak. I would also recommend their versions of Listen to the Music, and especially Everyday People.
Roselyn Williams has recording credits as a vocalist going back 20 years. She has collaborated with Damian Marley and Nas Marley. Sherieta Lewis has been a backing vocalist for Damian Marley for the past 11 years.
"Playing For Change" Has come great covers. "All Along the Watchtower", "Gimme Shelter", "Listen to the Music", :Ripple"; "Higher Ground" - Severe Rabbit Hole Warning!
Their first recording with musicians from around the world was Stand By Me. The lead vocalist on that recording, Roger Ridley, died of a heart attack before their first album was completed. Their first album was packaged as a box set with a feature length documentary DVD. Producer Mark Johnson describes meeting with Roger's widow after the album was completed near the end of the documentary.
As Stevie Wonder said in "Sir Duke": "Music is a world within itself/With a language we all understand/With an equal opportunity/For all to sing, dance and clap their hands." We all need this right now. BTW, Sebastian Robertson--who co-produced this--is Robbie Robertson’s son.
I still have Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life vinyl Lp. It is fist class all the way. I grew up with all this great music. It is so inspiring to see younger people discovering for their self what we already know to be true- music unites. Good music will still be good no matter how much time passes on. This is inspiring indeed:)
This was the first thing I thought of also. I have followed them since their inception. This was their first song that started the whole movement of music bringing the world together in peace. th-cam.com/video/Us-TVg40ExM/w-d-xo.html&start_radio=1
Hi know I'm late to the party on this one, but this is one of the most uplifting videos I've seen in a long time. Seeing how everyone was enjoying the process of making great music is such a joy.
You are a such a sweet breath of positivity...I love seeing you react to the music I grew up on and no matter the style or genre you see right to the heart of what makes music such a powerful vehicle for bringing what this world needs so badly...keep up your amazing work, looks like fun...love, love , love, music, music, music
You probably already know this... but Robbie Robertson is the same guy whose double necked guitar you were asking about in the version of the The Weight done at the Last Waltz with the Staples Singers. His son was one of the people instrumental in putting this one together. Robbie says he really didn't have a clue, his son asked him to do it, and then - eventually - said 'sit here and play' - and he did. It wasn't until he saw the finished production that he really "got it." I know. Way too much detail. I'm a nerd.
Robbie Robertson was in “The Band” the originators of this song. he’s playing guitar in the beginning and through out with the blue shirt. There’s also a great version from The last waltz with The Staples.
Ringo just celebrated his 80th on virtual TH-cam. We have enjoyed Playing for Change for a few years now. Jamel we have a request PLAYING FOR CHANGE ft Los Lobos it features Mariachis & East Los Angeles. On Christmas Eve PLAYING FOR CHANGE was all we played ONE LOVE ONE WORLD ONE RACE
RINGO FANS watch a Comedy Classic starring Ringo Starr, Shelly Long, Barbara Bach, Dennis Quaid, John Matuszak, CAVEMAN the slapstick comedy, animation of dinosaurs. ,CAVEMAN
There are a lot of covers of this song, but this one takes the prize. I'd not been aware of Playing for Change previous to this. Glad to become aware. As an aside, Jamel, Larkin Poe, who was a part of this, is worthy of putting on your list to explore when you get time.
I was wondering if this version would make it to your desk. 😁 The whole Playing for Change series is awesome. But this is my favorite. Peace & Love everyone!
Freaking Ringo Starr... people who don't know criticize his drumming, but really, not only is he a great drummer, but he manages to make his drum sound instantly recognizable.
Robbie Robertson wrote the song and is the only surviving member of the Band he plays with Ringo Starr of the Beatles and Lukas Nelson Willie Nelson's son and musicians all over the world as The Weight is a very well known popular song that many musicians of various genres know my heart. Robbie has been working consistently since the mid 70's in Hollywood scoring films and occasionally as an actor.
I don't know why but these videos always make me get real emotional. All these people, from all over the world, coming together to play a song for a purpose. It gets me every time.
OMG!!!! I am so glad you had the same reaction I had when I first saw and heard this video. Think how beautiful the world can be with all the beautifully diverse people coming together for this brief moment in time to enjoy and enhance and enrich each others' lives!!! This is such a positive video and I really appreciate your reaction and message!!!!
A must to listen to. Playing for change is probably the best display of music being played the way it should. All of the music is perfect, I have not heard anything that makes me stop listening. I’m still trying to listen to everything that is available. So great full for all these artists. Thank you again.
Absolutely fantastic live version of The Weight; and timeless too! Proof that you don’t have to quit playing when you get older. If your health is good and you play or “practice” often Lol-- I doubt they need any practice. then they can play music damn near forever! Ringo is right on time as always with his drumming. They all were great. This song’s message is so needed right now. Peace
I was around when the tune first came out, and I'm glad I've made it long enough to enjoy this song played under this project! This brings tears to my eyes....unity through music! My all time favorite song....I drop whatever I'm doing when this comes on!
Robbie is an amazing song writer and guitarist. He is world renowned and extremely respected in the industry. Besides The Band he also has solo albums. A couple of songs I really like are Showdown at big sky and Somewhere down the crazy river.
Hey Jamel !! Thanks for posting~~~~ Every "Playing for Change" video is worthwhile, musically and with that international-humanity-united vibe. I came to it through their cover of "Ripple," a song you reacted to a while back from its Grateful Dead original, studio recording.
When I die and find myself in heaven I would be quite content if The Weight was played constantly. Been hearing it for 50 years and it just never gets old.
There are so many great PFC videos out there--Cotton Fields, Country Roads, Down by the Riverside, etc. but one for Ripple is in a class by itself. David Hidalgo (Los Lobos), Jimmy Buffet, David Crosby each take a verse, Bill Kreutzman (Grateful Dead) on drums and one of Jerry Garcia's daughters on back up vocals.
All of the Playing For Change songs are amazing. And I'm sure you have already looked into it but Playing For Change is an organization that supports music education throughout the world. If you get a chance I think, REALLY think, you should react to "Stand By Me" and "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay" as done by Playing For Change. Everything they've done is great but those 2 are amazing!
I know I’m a little late to THIS party, but the 1st million views was probably ME! I have always loved this number, but when I read the back story and saw it for the 1st time? SLAMMED it on the playlist! Has to be my favorite rendering of this old great. It’s said that Robbie Robertson’s son compiled and arranged all the musicians as a gift for his Dad! I cry every time I hear it and watch the different artists the world over … makes me think peace and love ARE possible. Kudos to you, my brother, keep doing what you’re doing!!!
That was so cool. So much talent involved. Music unites for sure. I liked the two girls in Jamaica the most, what a voice the one girl has. Thank you Jamel for showing this. I never heard of this video and probably never would have if it weren't for you. I just thought of a song you should react to, What The World Needs Now by Jackie DeShannon. I think that's how you spell her name.
I love Playing For Change - it's well worth your time to check out their other collaborations! And I dare you not to be happy after you listen to this fantastic performance.
Love to see Ringo actually playing the drums at age 80!! Jamel, the guy in the blue shirt, seated, wearing glasses is Robbie Robertson. He was a member of The Band, who with the Staple Singers, performed this same song in a video you reacted to about two months ago. That performance was from 1978.
this was AWESOME. there are several of these "playing for change" songs, and i love that i got introduced to this one right here. the band "1 Giant Leap" has a similar "all around the world" collective of musicians for their projects, highly recommended for that blend of world music with rock-n-roll.
I may have errors as my tears won’t stop flowing. This sing has always held my heart since I was a kid and tonight watching this, I just couldn’t stop the flow. We need this desperately in this time and I don’t know what the next few years have in store but I would hope like say, the music starts bringing us together because we need it. Thanks to whenever suggested this and thank you for sharing 🤗
I've seen this about 50 times and still can't watch it without crying. We Are ALL ONE! We are ALL in this TOGETHER!! Love from Nowhere'sVille, Missouri.
Playing for Change has s*it tons of absolutely great collaborations. Please do more. Maybe "Get Up Stand Up" , "Higher Ground", "One Love"... There are so many, just throw a dart. ✌️💕🎶
MUSIC IS THE GREAT EQUALIZER! Jamel, you have to research Playing for Change. You are a natural for this group - these are your peeps in terms of love of music and how it can bring the whole world together. PLEASE check out Gimme Shelter by Playing for Change. The girl who gave you goosebumps stars in that song, in my opinion, and got me started loving Playing for Change.
Every song in the Playing for Change series is amazing, joyful, mesmerizing, and if you don’t watch out they will bring a tear to your eye and make your heart soar.
Knew this tume was special the first time I heard it 50 years ago. Still glad to see how popular it is all over the world. U R right Jamel, the power of good music to touch the hearts of humanity, & harmonize us.,,,, Makes our species worth saving.......
Yessir! ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS ❤️❤️❤️! Robbie Robertsen who played initially at the beginning wrote the tune, and no doubt, thru the 6 degrees of separation rule, created this masterpiece with all these musicians throughout the world...jaw dropping
I love these Playing for Change videos. Watching the joy on your face as you watched this one brought tears to my eyes. Jamal, you are part of a world-wide movement toward harmony and peace. Thank you for your work.
Jamel--this is my true personal favorite song. When you did the cut from "The Last Waltz," with The Band accompanied by the Staples you floated up to a new level of being so moved. When I "go home," if anyone bothers, and I don't really want that, this is the song ,every performance by everyone, is all that needs be played.
this song is the 50th anniversay of robbie robertsons song...the weight....hes the guy in the dark blue shirt...with dark glasses on....hes cool....and many memories of growing up in the 60's and 70s ,,the music that came from that era.....blows my mind....remember peace and love
as well as featuring great tunes & musicians, playing for change are part of a global coming together of musicians & artists, for change & for the environment
Written by a Canadian playing in an American band and sung and shared around the world . One of my favorite renditions of one of my top 10 all time favorite songs. Thank you Jamel for doing this. I found your reaction videos back when you started doing the RUSH and your genuine love of these songs and all the music you have showcased helps bring home a point I like the keep close. We all come from different backgrounds be it culture, social, economic and religious but we all can have a common bond the love of good music. Again thank you.
The organization and editing are top notch. This kind of quality is unexpected, and a pleasure. It also demonstrates what modern technology can bring to creativity. Because in real time ( RT ), if all these players were on one stage, you couldn't get this kind of perfection. It would require a leader who could marshal all of those superb talents, without damaging their egos, who are from different cultures and eras. But the separation, where the artists send in their parts, is edited to perfection. It also requires orchestration, which is writing down the specific parts and sending them out to the artists, some of whom read music, or read tab, or might not read music at all.
@@mu99ins Almost all of that quality work is done by Robbie Robertson's son. ( Stefan or perhaps, Sebastian- Sorry I cannot recall). He does it without "quanitizing" to the extent that the freedom of spirit is lost. So often, producers these days digitize and piece together to a specific digital "click" (beat), and lose all of that humanity. Note, HOWEVER, every player must play to the same human rhythm; it can be fixed if someone blows it, but it then must be replayed by the participant or a studio player. Argument still rages on the issue of whether Robbie ,alone, wrote the song. That bitterness on many "Band" compositions is what led to The Band's relatively short life with the original members. Many dedicated fans assert that Richard Manuel and even more, Levon Helm, were very active collaborators on most of their songs. Robertson continued his career, with a number of movie scores. Helm continued as "The Band" with other lead guitarists, and later formed "The Dirt Farmer Band" based out of his farmstead in the state of New York--near Woodstock/Saugerties. Many people who are not locked into "The Band," (as I am, admittedly, and this is my all-time favorite song, period-in 74 years of living and 57+ years as a below average guitarist from a family that has 2 gifted and professional guitarists) consider Levon Helm as a best, top of the line drummer. And, that doesn't even account for his singing roles. While Robertson is considered a unique guitarist, he is nowhere near the top tier in that musical instrument skill. Hell, I can play his lead licks and rhythm parts. To be fair about the "tone" in this comment, I acknowledge that I have always considered Helm the center of the group.
@@jetobey5656 - There's a lot of things that happened which had to succeed to make this kind of video. The editing was seamless and understated, which is rare in music videos. Someone, or a group of people, selected the artists, and these artists were up to the task. The many artists had to know what part of the song they were assigned, and for that they're sent a recording or the written music, or tablature ( at least charts to make the task clear ). The audio recordings of the parts are necessary to get the correct timing and tuning. And there has to be a video technician as well as a recording technician on location with the equipment, and a director, as those shots were on location and not amateurish, and all this is not easy thing to schedule. And then there's the drudgery of the artist's agents and contracts. The musicianship of the Band was top notch, with the exception of R.R., who was better than adequate because his parts, while short, were tasteful and edged in well with the group that had 2 keyboards and a sax. If you can cover Robbie's guitar licks, you are better than you admit. The vocals of Helm and Danko were some of the best in music and unique, and without those voices, it's doubtful the Band would have made it beyond a studio "wrecking crew", or playing the bars.
@@mu99ins Well analyzed and well said. Danko on "It Makes No Difference," has brought tears to my eyes. And Manuel's "King Harvest" is so dark but still hopeful-I listen to it over and over.
@@jetobey5656 - Thanks for the reminder. Haven't heard that song since the previous millennium. I listened to a live version and the studio version. Richard Manuel had a skilled singing voice. I don't know that much about the group, but my impression is that they had gobs of talent and lacked a strong leader. The Beatles didn't have a leader, and they lost focus. And then there's the legal and royalties issues. But, it's a tough business and groups have to make a profit or it falls apart I would guess. The disco era was so harsh.
Playing for Change's cover of the Ben E King classic was inspired by a combination of producer Mark Johnson's fondness of John Lennon's cover and hearing the late great street musician Roger Ridley perform it with an additional verse that he wrote himself.
There’s a video about the making of this particular Playing for Change song (there are others you should check out). It’s in two parts and it’s not very long but it’s worth a watch. Robbie Robertson’s son wanted to do this as a tribute to his dad and they talk to several of the musicians involved.

Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground is amazing. Got to add huge kudos to whoever puts the videos together. It’s beyond awesome! ☝️
Gimme Shelter is my favorite.
AMAZING !!!!! Good old rock church music. Wonderful that this song is so well known all over the world.

@Robert Brown It was this rendition that caused me to be a Lukas fan.
Robbie Robertson is the guy in "The Band and The Staples" video you reviewed earlier who was playing the double-necked guitar.
Many comments agree 'Playing for Change' is worthy of a deep dive when you have time. Maybe make them 1 of your charities for unboxing

Playing for Change does such a phenomenal rendition of the Dead’s Ripple. I’ve worn that video out! 😂
Yessir! ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS ❤️❤️❤️! Robbie Robertsen who played initially at the beginning wrote the tune, and no doubt, thru the 6 degrees of separation rule, created this masterpiece with all these musicians throughout the world...jaw dropping
The world needs these people, this song, more than EVER!
That was great. Larkin Poe was in there love it.
Larkin Poe is super great Live! Saw them the first time in Singapore when they performed during the Singapore F1 Grand Prix last year (2019).

There are so many nice choices on Playing for a Change. It’s great seeing and hearing these people from all over the world. 🌍✌️
Playing for change is amazing
Written by a Canadian playing in an American band and sung and shared around the world . One of my favorite renditions of one of my top 10 all time favorite songs. Thank you Jamel for doing this. I found your reaction videos back when you started doing the RUSH and your genuine love of these songs and all the music you have showcased helps bring home a point I like the keep close. We all come from different backgrounds be it culture, social, economic and religious but we all can have a common bond the love of good music. Again thank you.
I know this is coming long after your comment - but I just read it. The Band was NOT an American band. It was 4 Canadians and 1 American!
"Playing for Change "is an inspiring project.
The organization and editing are top notch. This kind of quality is unexpected, and a pleasure. It also demonstrates what modern technology can bring to creativity.
Because in real time ( RT ), if all these players were on one stage, you couldn't get this kind of perfection. It would require a leader who could marshal all of those superb talents,
without damaging their egos, who are from different cultures and eras. But the separation, where the artists send in their parts, is edited to perfection. It also requires
orchestration, which is writing down the specific parts and sending them out to the artists, some of whom read music, or read tab, or might not read music at all.
The editing was seamless and understated,
which is rare in music videos. Someone, or a group of people, selected the artists, and these artists were up to the task. The many artists had to
know what part of the song they were assigned, and for that they're sent a recording or the written music, or tablature ( at least charts to make the
task clear ). The audio recordings of the parts are necessary to get the correct timing and tuning. And there has to be a video technician as well
as a recording technician on location with the equipment, and a director, as those shots were on location and not amateurish, and all this is not easy
thing to schedule. And then there's the drudgery of the artist's agents and contracts. The musicianship of the Band was top notch, with the exception
of R.R., who was better than adequate because his parts, while short, were tasteful and edged in well with the group that had 2 keyboards and a sax.
If you can cover Robbie's guitar licks, you are better than you admit. The vocals of Helm and Danko were some of the best in music and unique, and
without those voices, it's doubtful the Band would have made it beyond a studio "wrecking crew", or playing the bars.
I love when I hear a new interpretation of a song and it is unique yet comparable to the original.. sometimes even better. Thank you for sharing
Playing for Change: All Along the Watchtower. Another great one.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Came here to say this. The Playing for Change version of Stand By Me is extraordinary!
