I think Scott nailed the issues. Football and Basketball have had a decade+ to tier out and define the market for RPAs and what product(s) have the market leading types. Baseball has RPAs in nearly every product that isn’t Ginter or Big League, whereas Panini has been selective about what products get an RPA and their quality levels by brand. The ceiling on a Dynasty RPA is capped when you can get a filthy RPA of a top rookie from a slew of other brands for a more consumer friendly value. I think Inception in particular hurts it as those RPAs are very cheap with nice patches (likely due to the sticker).
Funny enough, the reason Bowman 1st and Panini RPAs are the kings are the exact same reason: there is a relatively hard cap on the number of a truly desirable card type that is seen as collectors by THE card for a guy. If Panini put RPAs in Score numbered to /1000 in five different variants or Jackson Holliday had Bowman 1st autos in Paper, Chrome, Draft, Inception, Heritage, Pro Debut, and they put out Bowman Definitive, Bowman Chrome Black, Bowman Dynasty, Bowman Transcendent, etc. we’d see declines there as collectors might decide something else is the grail if you will.
    Great debate guys.

I found TPott’s argument to be compelling. He’s just contending that one slice of the card market will outperform another during the time frame he specified because of a price dislocation. There doesn’t need to be any kind of tectonic shift in the baseball card landscape for his position to play out. Good discussion by all, thanks for the episode!

Great session guys. I’m only a few minutes in so hopefully this thought survives the video! My take here is that like Phil said, baseball collectors don’t really love RPA’s…totally agree. I would just add some exceptions: they do seem to like certain relics (understanding this isn’t rookie stuff) like pieces of field seats from places such as Ebbets field or bat relics from the superstars…it seems these kind of relics play well so perhaps something other than patches/jerseys etc could play better as a Rookie Relic Auto (RRA’s)…might be something for Topps to explore for future rookie auto versions with stuff in the cards?
Thx again for a great session, gentlemen

Personally, my favorite card I own is a 2020 Topps Dynasty Yordan Alvarez Logoman RPA. I have a fairly significant collection of his prospect and rookie cards, but at the end of the day each card is just another parallel of the last. The uniqueness of game used material is what separates Dynasty, and sets like it from traditional collections. While I understand most patches aren't nearly as special as a 1/1, all of them bring you closer to the game and the player you're collecting.

  • @AfterHoursCollector

I am a true time machine. Left the hobby over 30 years ago and just got back in. My observations:
I understand demand/scarcity driving these prices but to me an auto for a young player who will potentially be signing for decades is worth very little. A swatch of a uniform is a crumb of something cool if it was left as a whole. 90% of these rookies are the next Kevin Maas.
It all adds up to me that for the same money you could have something truly special and rare of a proven great player like The Mick, Koufax, or Gibson. I get the excitement over potential but even if it pans out someday their cards will have the same excitement of an older star and you simply paid the price for that up front.

@@rickyboyd5315 Great point. the thing is, topps is a money making machine. They don’t cater to old school “true” collectors bc they aren’t buying wax etc. While some true collectors have small circles, their opinion im sure gets heard but doesn’t flinch topps plans. Because after all, they aren’t buying wax. They aren’t spending thousands on opening it either. They want what they want - they buy singles - black parallels, golds, SSP, 1st autos. They aren’t ripping it either, maybe an occasional fun rip . But I can understand the fact that fanatics just wants to make money and that’s it. The collector base will never end, they will adjust accordingly though, some will leave forever, or come back years later.. Imo dynasty is overrated. Generally speaking how you feel about this dynasty topic is going to come down to what you collect. People like Tpot and myself that collect all major sports think the dynasty rookie card discount is comparably absurd. Baseball only or mostly baseball collectors tend to be slow to change and slave to tradition. Don’t own any but Dynasty should be king of the baseball rc. Bowman will always be king of the 1st or prospect card. Bowman will always be 1st by a few years at least so comparing dynasty to it is like 🍎 to 💣

I think with fanatics and their licenses for product and the highest distributor of game quality jerseys, etc. and Phil mentioned the rpas in F1, one thing that is consistent with that and something that is creeping into the actual memorabilia in the jerseys, etc is the higher prevalence of actual patches. Sure the fans don’t really like it for baseball, but for every other sport patches, whether sponsorships or rookie debut or anything else the ownership wants to add, Fanatics will be the suppliers to the public of these items.
The more authentic and opportunity to add scarcity/uniqueness to the clothing items, etc. the higher value that item has in the future, the more opportunity to make more money on these as rpas in the future.

A lot of people don’t dive so deep into the number of cards from every Topps set, they’re just happy to be able to get something different and usually has that eye appeal from the patch and auto. I am not an RPA patch baseball collector like Dr. Phil mentioned. His point is dead on from my point of view. Nor can I ever see myself buying one. But the younger generation may well ~so follow your thesis T-Pott.....stay true to your angle. It certainly wouldnt be a shocker IMO. I enjoyed your time and thoughts. Great video. I agree with Scott. There is too much confusion in baseball RPA.
I also think Geoff and his team are encouraged to market Topps high end products as "good" and potential replacements to NT and Flawless in baseball. I have heard Geoff say this over and over. I think Geoff and many of his camp don't have the experience that Phil and Scott point it out.
I think Fanatics COULD make an elite RPA product, but they need to look at adding to the experience. How about pull an RPA in baseball that gets you an invite to a Transcendent like party with players SIGNING your RPA live.

My thought is, baseball is an old American pastime. Many collectors of baseball cards dislike change in the same way they dislike the pitch clock and new rules. F1 is an expensive sport, 1k a ticket plus, high end cities, etc. expensive is apart of it. Baseball is a cheap game historically. 1950s a ticket was $1.50. Those people are still living. You think they want to pay $1000 for a baseball card when they grew up on $2 dollar tickets. But what happens when the old gatekeepers pass away? The old “original” bowman colors won’t be remembered by these kids. When these kids get older, and they’ve lived off $8 dollar coffee and $200 dollar game tickets, they might want the game worn auto card for $1000. Dynasty is like panini one and one, people love it. I think Ty is right. It may not overtake bowman autos but the gap will likely get closer and closer .

Both of you raise valid points. I think Ty is right that the delta between high end RPAs and traditional prospect and rookie cards will likely shrink. I agree with Scott that it likely won’t be a monumental rise and that current RPAs are watered down by the sheer number/variety of them and the number of sets.
Phil is correct that it might not be Dynasty that becomes the “go to” RPA product. Topps needs to do a better job of not spreading these RPAs around so many products. They don’t become meaningless, but they haven’t become meaningful.

We are all bias in what we like. Some collectors only like base cards, some like autos, some like game used RPAs , etc. I think to each their own. Scott is a traditional collector, some historic sets. But he doesn’t like other historic sets. It’s all about what we like though. Most collectors hate other sets bc they own sets that they think are most important.
The argument about those Yordan RPAs, some have stickers, some have player worn, gotta stick with game used on card autos.. I don’t even look at the entire set, gotta look at the sub sets within them. I think dynasty is overrated Honestly. Subsets within Five Star - Jumbo RPAs, Definitive Jumbo RPAs, Tier One RPAs are super cheap. On Card Vs Sticker, Player Worn Vs Game Used.. Size of the Patch, is it a true sleeve patch? Is it a team name logo? A number? Ya really have to educated yourself.
Honestly though, I think ya have to collect both, BC autos, RPAs, ya can’t be ohhhh this one is more important than this one. I mean, who are the “baseball guys”? It’s all generalized opinions on what each of us think. All it takes is 2 guys to fight over a card.
Personally, ya gotta find cool patches. Look at tier one prodigious patches, historic in terms of last 10+ year had sets. There’s only 1 - /10 rpa of Yordan. They are also game dated with proof from a card with the mlb cert hologram. He only wore a specific jersey that year. If topps uses special jerseys which are worn 1 time then imo it’s a special piece. It’s just about not stop learning really. It never ends
Scott is obvious in his opinions, he literally hates RPAs lol. It’s his own opinion. Really though, collect what ya like. I like everything and there’s nothing wrong w that. I do agree w Tpott that there is way more opportunities with RPAs.
Ultimately, it all comes down to what do ya want your end game to be? What is your end game. Sell all your cards? Caskets Card?

And, there’s many people who like what you like and like what I like. To each their own! That’s why I love this hobby. Ya don’t have to do 1 thing and there’s no right or wrong way to do it.

Chris here - best thing the bowman first autos have going for them is that they are the first cards. The first autos.
Traditionally, they’d be considered the rookie cards. Topps changed the rules in 2006, but the first card is almost always the most desirable.
