Thank you Phil for calling out the absolute weirdness of Livvy Dunne announcing she'd gladly host some weird "sit with me in my suite to watch my boyfriend play baseball" offer. Let's be honest, the Pirates already made their money's worth in free PR from this whole thing even if the card is never pulled. It all goes to show, these debut patches are here to stay, and they are awesome.
The logical side of me says that you sell it and drastically improve your life but I love what the Pirates are offering from an emotional / baseball fan standpoint and hope more teams and players follow suit when it comes to highly desired memorabilia or cards.
The Pirates want to spend a couple hundred thousand on a baseball card when they have the second lowest payroll in baseball. It doesn't seem right to the players or Skenes since he's only getting paid about $750k a year. I'm surprised they're not adding free World Series tickets for the next 50 years
I don’t really think a single card can be the future of anything but it should absolutely supersede the bowman stuff. Since it’s an actual rookie card and not an airbrushed picture and the patch is a cool idea.
@@mauricioborino you’re not alone! Haha the only thing those cards have going for it is being “first”. The card designs are always boring, the pictures bad and airbrushed like we already talked about.
Here's a baseball card hot take (since I'm not on instagram, sorry Scott), the Topps Reverence Patch/Auto from Flagship is undervalued and should be worth similar to Dynasty patch/autos. Currently they're maybe 40-60% at most of the cost of dynasty cards, there's only the one variation, and all numbered to 10 or less. I'm not biased at all, having just bought the Chourio Reverence RPA 😂
Everybody wishing for the Skenes but me personally I would love to pull the Kanji auto Imanaga. I don't care that the Skenes is worth more, I just want it for my personal collection. I would never sell it.
In my personal opinion if there's one card I could have from my favorite player, I would easily take this RPA. There's literally only one if its kind. I get how huge of a card the Bowman 1st Superfractor Auto 1/1 of that said player is but at the end of the day there is still a lot of variations of that card with all the other parallels. There is only ONE of these RPA cards.
Just pulled a Jackson Holliday Stadium club chrome red refractor auto /50 [red /50?] Come on topps, but hey, hit out of 1 hobby box from my lcs, shoutout new buffalo, MI! Off to psa. Sweet Chourio SSP from yesterday btw. Take care guys
These cards are cool, I will. Say that. But I don't like what they're doing to the price of boxes or card collecting. Their impact on box prices is pricing out so many people from even really participating in ripping wax. And that's such a part of the fun. Yeah, you can buy singles, but that removes the wonder that comes from ripping. It's great seeing what you'll get, even if it's not worth a lot. But I can't justify that feeling at $300 a box. Such a shame.
this will expand to milestones and big games but this is THE TRUE rookie card. very well played by fanatics, who will cease to exist as a card collectibles entity within a few years. AND somehow panini will have every license
With Skenes. No doubt I’m off to Goldin. Any regular player, I’m keeping for a hot season. The high end hitters? Maybe lock it away. Like you all said, investing in MLB pitchers is like NFL QB’s…very risky.
It would not surprise me at all if 5 years from now some random rookie, nobody collects, posts a pic on IG of their man cave and hanging on the wall will be one of their rookie jerseys and on it will be the debut patch; and we find out the patches we’ve been salivating over are fake.
Take the cash. 30 years of home plate tickers isnt worth it no matter the team. You may not live long enough, skenes could not be playing in baseball, playing for another team or you may not be able to resell the tickets. Cash is king and provides many options. Pay off debt, invest, buy a home, fun vocations and buy more baseball cards (ha).
Don't forget about our beloved inflation as well. Those "$200 seats" could be "$500 seats" in 30 years. Who am I kidding, this is the Pirates we're talking about (HA HA HA HA HA HA!)
On the topic of RC’s: Luis Gil just won AL ROY and his ‘24 Topps card doesn’t have any logos on it. Have we ever seen a player have a plain card like this with the year prior them having a RC and the year after having a rookie cup logo? I’m assuming Topps will add the rookie cup logo to his ‘25 card(s) to honor his ROY the previous season?
I would see if I could add a stipulation that I could sell the tickets to the game with his girlfriend to some rich creep who would pay up for that opportunity.
Only a person who has money and is a Pirates fan will take that deal. Otherwise this will be most likely go to Golden. Great PR moves, cool offerings for sure by the Pirates. Box prices are insane. Anyone will post something to promote and pump a brand and latch onto the top stories. Gonna take decades of this to surpass the superfractor as the wanted card for a player that makes the big league.
Publicity is great...however collectors are born not made. Iotw the reason Fanatics will fail is the few people who come to the hobby via sports events; those same few collectors would have found the hobby anyway.
LOL when Excell puts the 2 year old product they couldn’t sell anywhere else on Walgreens shelves. In fairness, I grabbed a 2023 heritage blaster from Walgreens for $19 and pulled a Julio rookie cup real one auto out of it and that was nice lol
I trust Scott’s math. I’m taking the Pirates deal, selling the tickets, and investing. Inflation is a mofo. Those tickets are going to be hella expensive in 10-20 years
Great episode!! Just curious but do you think these rookie debut patches actually are really good for the average collector? It’s a Willy Wonka situation or even just playing the power ball. I love the idea but how many people out there are spending this ridiculous amount of money on these boxes with hopes of getting this and then 99.9999% of them get destroyed and likely end disappointed with their 10% ROI. It kinda seems like it was just bait and how many thousands of people took it and are getting absolutely wrecked. Don’t get me wrong they’re amazing and I’d love one but the definition of a lottery ticket that will lure countless to disappointment. Also, with Elly pulled after Jackson and Skenes are found do y’all think the price of boxes will drop as the chance of hitting a big one disappears?
I personally think it's impossible for this to be the future of the hobby without gurting the hobby. The incoming talent level in MLB would have to match the 2024 class every year and I dont see that happening. Also, if any of these rookies crash out in the next 3-5 years, it will immediately sour a lot of collectors wanting to get involved in chasing these types of cards. 1/1's are the new Beanie Babies IMO... they're all over the place and each week there's a new "most valuable" one. This concept is also almost guaranteed to freeze even more people out of the hobby financially. Is that what we really want?
I would sit down with Livy at the game & make her an offer she can’t refuse… I’d say look I know Paul has a cool mustache & everything, but I’m like 6-7 months from moving out of my parents house, let’s go down to the field & tell Paul it’s been fun but you’re gonna roll with me.. Really the awkwardness of watching a game with her would be the opposite of fun, I’d feel super creepy that I’d look to sell that experience to someone who’d actually enjoy it..
Actually, F selling the livvy day, I’d show up with a suitcase full of Skenes & Dunn cards & merch & a Lifetime supply of sharpies & tell her lazy-as to get to work… I’d say you bettter sign through at least 5k items by the 9th or I’m walking with my Skenes RPA…
If the future of the hobby is just looking for one card it’s doomed and what’s the point of collecting .. it’s more like a lottery today and crazy thing is started out for tobacco smokers and then for kids to collect and put in bike spokes
Ya the guy doesn’t even collect baseball much. He’s daddy Geoff Wilson’s paid puppet. Pumps and dumps his bosses cards. Having him taints this podcast, needs to go or Iam tuning out.
I've learned to enjoy T-Bagg when he stands up to Goof. He doesn't know jack S** about baseball cards though, just like Goof. They know grifting a hobby very well.
Whoever pulls the Skenes rookie debut patch card needs to either call Goldin or Heritage. I wouldn't even entertain the Pirates' offer.
I heard that some of the players are trying to buy their rookie debut patch. Pretty cool. Another souvenir for their trophy case.
Jeff here: Love this idea, too!
Is 30 years of watching every Pirates game something you actually would want? I'm not sure if that's a prize or a curse.
There's a massive monetary value to that, upwards of 2-3 million for tickets alone

I was in that PYP break that the Elly patch was pulled. Was an amazing feeling.
The guys at hobby legends are incredible at what they do and are very kind and generous. Was so happy to see it was them that pulled Elly

250k is about 165k after taxes. At a 10% cagr after 30 years thats $2.9M. More liquidity and less work. Take the straight cash homies.
A Pittsbutgh fan could buy at auction. Then trade it to Pittsburgh org? So depends on how Pittsburgh structures the deal.
Smart show

I'll stick with the paper version. Better bang for my buck.
If a card with a little patch of the jersey is worth over 200K, how much would the actual jersey be worth?
