I wish every year series 1,2, and U had the same setup, same parallels, and same inserts making big sets(with exception of ones like all star game), and case hits the same throughout. But each year they change the inserts and case hits, use them one year and use another the next. It would be cool to designate years to the case hits, like imagine looking back if 2023 was heavy lumber, and 2022 was home field advantage, and the only way to get those was to get a box from that specific year. I hate having 3 or however many rare case hit type cards. Also keep all true color parallels, and switch out the others each year. I think some of the new parallels are cool, but switch them out each year and make them unique for the year
WE 've now entered the point where it's impossible to get one of every parallel, insert SP, image variation etc from every set even if you only collect one player. Fortunately after the second year of a player you might as well pick out only the SPs you like best.... We have to let go getting everything of a PC player. Yea, 24 Update is excellent. We haven't even got top see Stadium Club yet this year. Too bad about the true photo versions ... but the Golden Mirror is turning out to be a regular part of Flagship.
Agreed - Chris here and I agree that all these extra parallels probably make people collect fewer cards. I'm obviously excited for Stadium Club but not at $199 a box. I'm also very gald to see how rare the update golden mirror SSP are!
I love true photos...BUT that's basically Stadium Club. Do we need both? I like the Gatorade baths a lot more than some of the other SPs recently, they usually make for great images. Kind of cool if all of them ended up with this theme...along the lines of an insert set theme in a way
I just find it strange the big breakers are getting super juiced cases but civilians aren’t getting even close to those. I got 3 cases from Topps directly and didn’t come close to the breakers
Chris here - I truly don't think this is the case. I've talked to some breakers and I think it's all luck of the draw. Plus, just think of how damaging it would be to Topps if it was ever proven they were deliberately loading cases for specific breakers. It might actually kill the hobby.

Great episode guys! Once you guys started talking about the main flagship parallels it made me want to bring this up. Here’s my thoughts/questions: How long until the Independence Day passes up the black in terms of demand/popularity? This is assuming Topps doesn’t get lazy with the design (big assumption). Maybe this will never happen or maybe it’s years down the road (maybe once the blacks print run double's the Independence Day?) but since the independence days are set in stone (76) and the black print run will continue to climb, do you guys think there will ever be a shift from black to Independence Day?
Chris here - I see what you're saying, but I have a hard time imagining the Black Parallel not being number one. There are already almost 50% more blacks than pink/blue and blacks still outsell those. I think it would take the black print run getting close to 150 or so before the independence day takes over and honestly, even then, I'd rather have the black. They started in 2003!

Case of Hobby boxes - We pulled 8 autos (Gold Holliday), 2 from silver packs. In a case of jumbos - most of the boxes were carrying 2 autos and 3 relics. The Jumbo case also had true mother's day RC of Skenes, and true RC card Fathers Day for Langford. So I can see why everyone is buying it up.
I got back into collecting in 2018 after collecting as a kid from 1977 thru 1993 (good timing as I pulled a gold Ohtani out of series 2 and a gold Acuna & the debut from update). I am a Yankee fan so wanted to go back a year to get a Judge Rookie. I bought a Jumbo of 17 Series 1 and got the Black 1/66. All of the new parallels are cool, but the Golds and Black will always be my favorites!
The edge wear on the SSP's is disheartening, but I will say, the black parallel seems to be in better shape than I expected. One major issue with update in all years is the thinner paper stock from series 1 & 2, which decreases gem rates. You would think for parallels and SSP's they'd make an exception and use the thicker stock.
When I was watching y'all talking about where that Soto homer took place I was laughing lol...whites are home jerseys, I thought this was universal throughout the league! Yankees have no alternates or city connects. Whites at home and grey on the road. I do know some teams wear alternates/city connects at home but I've never seen teams wear true home white jerseys on the road. Anyways, another good video 👍🏼

It’s only 25 with update. For the record SOMLB suck, but if Topps is going to make us eat them, give us the full 30 cards so we get less of each one. I mention this as it’s more inconsistency. Why change after 3 years? Another interesting thing I saw (think it was Grip N Rip) pulled a SP of Jazz Chisholm on the Yankees card number US1, which is Soto. Maybe more SP guys in the set.

The 1989 Design?Chris here - I love those cards. And honestly, condition - especially with those dark borders and edges - really isn't that important. I have an 2018 Acuna gold in the 1983 design and it's one of my favorite cards. Congrats on the pick up!
I was extremely fortunate enough to pull a true Skenes rookie in black /74 and Skenes rookie debut gold foil. I PC Skenes, and I want to keep the black but the prices are enticing for selling. Card is surprisingly sharp but I would be surprised if a black gems. Should I sell it now high? Try to buy it back when hype dies down with chrome update? Or just send it for grading? Love this episode guys keep it up.
Chris here - if you're anything like me, you'll get very attached to cards you personally pull. You pulled arguably, the single best card in this product. HUGE WIN! If it looks clean, no visible whiting on the corners and edges, I'd recommend sending it to PSA.
@Philmington My gold foils were crazy good, too. I got Elly, Skenes, Pages and Holliday. Had one pack with 3 different Skenes cards. It was like the box was on tilt.
True photo and logo border variations are a big miss for me. I loved those - especially the logo border (wanted the Brewers team set of the logo border). But I love that several of the Rookie Debut images are better than the base rookie card image, and the legend Home Field Advantage are a big win. I did pull a Golden Mirror SSP in my one hobby box (Michael Siani, but still its a SSP).
Also. The golden mirror design is different in update compared to series 1 and 2. The front borders on update look the same as base compared to all white in other series’s
For some strange, nonsensical reason Topps made the borders all white in series 2. Why? Who the F knows. I'm glad they're back to normal but now series 2 SSP just stand out like a sore thumb.
If you want to know and are asking for an honest and unbiased opinion, Topps is not worth it. Why? I remember and about 100,000 other collectors of real baseball cards Topps throwing a fit and tantrum like a little child, then they took thousands of very valuable baseball cards and dumping them in the ocean: players like Mickey Mantle, Ty Cobb, Honus, Roger Maris, Yogi, Ted Williams just to name a few. You see back then people were asking Topps to correct thier problems with centering thier cards, make even cuts because thier cards were losing value fast. Then in 2024 still Topps makes these same mistakes with 90% of thier cards. Everyone tries to blame card grading services like PSA for lowered grading but, it's mostly Topps fault just like yester years gone by that happened years ago, collectors were fed up so, they got together and held Topps accountable, Topps had thier chances to correct issues but, instead threw thier tantrum like a child and dumped them in the ocean instead of correcting thier mistakes. In today's world Topps drove prices sky high in 2024, ever wondered why true collectors buy on secondary markets and the decline trend continues.....Imagine what Topps will do when sales declines, will they pull thier tantrum they did years ago, again? The quality of cards Topps makes is too far and in between plus they keep increasing thier prices. What's the solution? We need another major card maker like Donross officially licensed by MLB, have you ever recently opened any bigger boxes of Donross baseball? The cards are centered, bigger parallels, autos, more vibrant colors, more old time cards and the list goes on. So, no! I won't be buying anymore Topps cards: I do have a few Topps cards that are Tiffany made, these cards are better suited for collectors. There my honest view of Topps!
Got a jack leiter auto rc to /199 from the silver pack and got a westburg rpa as my hit for my hobby box and a bunch of numbered cards. I pre ordered so I feel like I got my money's worth
Chris here - it's ok. I'd much rather have the platinum 1/1 because it's been around for many years. But if the First Card sticks around for a few years and it's a lot cheaper, I'd be interested.
We are losing really any cards becoming icons. If there are 50,000 different rookie cards of a player then most are not that important. You say 2011 Mike Trout and you instantly know the card. Try saying that now with Paul Skenes.
Chris here - it's not easy. But I'm frequently hyperfocused on just a couple of cards. Avoiding breaks, not buying much wax and just putting it out there what I'm looking for. takes a lot of time and a lot effort.

Haven’t seen any hangers. Topps sells blasters for 24.99, my local sells them for 35.99. This has to stop, make it like Scotty Cameron putters. The price should be the price, card shops get them at a discount already.
It's artificial scarcity. The term SSP or SSSSP 😂 means nothing since they're not serial numbered. Kabooms and Downtowns are the similar equivalent in Panini stuff. I may buy some 24 Update but not a lot of it because the odds are still small of hitting anything special are small. It's got a better checklist than last year though. Thanks for sharing! Chris here - PSA pop reports are good indicators of scarcity as well. Just takes a while for dust to settle on new releases, but it's usually pretty obvious when particular cards are NOT rare!

How valuable will SSSSSSSSP cards be in 10 years when there are a BILLION SSSSSSSSSP cards from the previous decades? When there are so many that they're no longer very special because every player has thousands of them? Who is gonna care about the SSSSSSSP of some guy who finished his career with 1500 hits and 200 home runs?
Chris here - this is a great point. There will always be collectors who want a PC player's Flagship SSP every year. Those will be fun runs to put together. But just like every parallel and card, only the best cards of the best players will matter. Trout has tons of SSP by now, but the rarest ones and the best images still command top dollar. Am I concerned that TOpps is watering down the SSP/SP market by including them in EVERY SINGLE SET THEY PRODUCE???? Yes, yes I am. But I ignore most of them. Unless the image is special. And sadly, most of them this year have not been anything special.
When you and people like you pay these High Prices on Hobby Boxes and Jumbo ect... Price Gouging is going on... STOP it. Paying this much is crazy and where is the Value.... Most all of this has no value or very little. Crazy

In Topps holiday you can get all the sp cards easily. You can do a run .

Chris here - this reminds me of the 2019 Topps Update set where almost all the variations - especially the horizontal ones - have brutal top edges.
Only bought into one break (Padres) and ripped zero boxes, got a Merrill True Flagship Gold /2024 and I said, I am stopping!

Chris here - if you're anything like me, you'll get very attached to cards you personally pull. You pulled arguably, the single best card in this product. HUGE WIN! If it looks clean, no visible whiting on the corners and edges, I'd recommend sending it to PSA.

@Philmington My gold foils were crazy good, too. I got Elly, Skenes, Pages and Holliday. Had one pack with 3 different Skenes cards. It was like the box was on tilt.

True photo and logo border variations are a big miss for me. I loved those - especially the logo border (wanted the Brewers team set of the logo border). But I love that several of the Rookie Debut images are better than the base rookie card image, and the legend Home Field Advantage are a big win. I did pull a Golden Mirror SSP in my one hobby box (Michael Siani, but still its a SSP).
You definitley beat the odds by pulling one out of single hobby box!!

Also. The golden mirror design is different in update compared to series 1 and 2. The front borders on update look the same as base compared to all white in other series’s
For some strange, nonsensical reason Topps made the borders all white in series 2. Why? Who the F knows. I'm glad they're back to normal but now series 2 SSP just stand out like a sore thumb.
If you want to know and are asking for an honest and unbiased opinion, Topps is not worth it. Why? I remember and about 100,000 other collectors of real baseball cards Topps throwing a fit and tantrum like a little child, then they took thousands of very valuable baseball cards and dumping them in the ocean: players like Mickey Mantle, Ty Cobb, Honus, Roger Maris, Yogi, Ted Williams just to name a few. You see back then people were asking Topps to correct thier problems with centering thier cards, make even cuts because thier cards were losing value fast. Then in 2024 still Topps makes these same mistakes with 90% of thier cards. Everyone tries to blame card grading services like PSA for lowered grading but, it's mostly Topps fault just like yester years gone by that happened years ago, collectors were fed up so, they got together and held Topps accountable, Topps had thier chances to correct issues but, instead threw thier tantrum like a child and dumped them in the ocean instead of correcting thier mistakes. In today's world Topps drove prices sky high in 2024, ever wondered why true collectors buy on secondary markets and the decline trend continues.....Imagine what Topps will do when sales declines, will they pull thier tantrum they did years ago, again? The quality of cards Topps makes is too far and in between plus they keep increasing thier prices. What's the solution? We need another major card maker like Donross officially licensed by MLB, have you ever recently opened any bigger boxes of Donross baseball? The cards are centered, bigger parallels, autos, more vibrant colors, more old time cards and the list goes on. So, no! I won't be buying anymore Topps cards: I do have a few Topps cards that are Tiffany made, these cards are better suited for collectors. There my honest view of Topps!

Chris here - it's ok. I'd much rather have the platinum 1/1 because it's been around for many years. But if the First Card sticks around for a few years and it's a lot cheaper, I'd be interested.

We are losing really any cards becoming icons. If there are 50,000 different rookie cards of a player then most are not that important. You say 2011 Mike Trout and you instantly know the card. Try saying that now with Paul Skenes.

Chris here - it's not easy. But I'm frequently hyperfocused on just a couple of cards. Avoiding breaks, not buying much wax and just putting it out there what I'm looking for. takes a lot of time and a lot effort.

Haven’t seen any hangers. Topps sells blasters for 24.99, my local sells them for 35.99. This has to stop, make it like Scotty Cameron putters. The price should be the price, card shops get them at a discount already.
I agree. The prices for boxes are out of control. It;s pushing collectors out.
It's artificial scarcity. The term SSP or SSSSP 😂 means nothing since they're not serial numbered. Kabooms and Downtowns are the similar equivalent in Panini stuff. I may buy some 24 Update but not a lot of it because the odds are still small of hitting anything special are small. It's got a better checklist than last year though. Thanks for sharing! Chris here - PSA pop reports are good indicators of scarcity as well. Just takes a while for dust to settle on new releases, but it's usually pretty obvious when particular cards are NOT rare!

Chris here - this is a great point. There will always be collectors who want a PC player's Flagship SSP every year. Those will be fun runs to put together. But just like every parallel and card, only the best cards of the best players will matter. Trout has tons of SSP by now, but the rarest ones and the best images still command top dollar. Am I concerned that TOpps is watering down the SSP/SP market by including them in EVERY SINGLE SET THEY PRODUCE???? Yes, yes I am. But I ignore most of them. Unless the image is special. And sadly, most of them this year have not been anything special.
