9:51 the rider has 1 finger up indicating "1 more rider coming up". Trail 101 for those who don't know.. Thanks for putting this video together.. Trail looks awesome.
I live just a few miles from the Rainbow Trail. I have ridden it from Salida south to South Colony and back and I can attest to the fact that it is not easy. There are tight switchbacks, plenty of rocky stairstep hills, narrow sections where the brush drags both handlebars and it can be considered to be fun if you happen to be an 'A' enduro rider. The trail is closer to 10,000 feet and was initially built to attract bicycle riders. Ha. The bailouts are just trails onto private property and locked gates, for the most part and there is a lot more ATV traffic than motorcycles. It is beautiful if you have the time to stop and admire the scenery. As mentioned down this page, the trail is a LOT longer than the 30 miles you keep mentioning and it really is tiring.
I went on a single track a couple months ago near durango, Co. I was all rutted out from the quads. I only went a few miles since I was by myself. It was rocky, kinda icy at certain spots and when i got to a certain section i just said nope not by myself. So iust turned around and hauled ass back haha. I don't know where this trail is at exactly though.. Do you?
@@banditryder4696 The Rainbow Trail is in the Sangre de Cristo National Forest and runs roughly parallel to the mountains on the east side of the peaks from Salida, Colorado southward to a trail access a bit south of South Colony Road. Maps of the San Isabel forest will show it, as it is one of the main access trails in this area. Almost everything west of the Rainbow Trail is in a wilderness area, so the only access is from the east side of the mountains. Salida and Westcliffe are the two main towns along and east of the trail with some bailouts to Howard, which is along the US 50 route along the Arkansas River. In the Westcliffe area there are several access points, including South Colony, Horn Peak Road, Hermit Road and one access just above the Lutheran Camp road. The majority of the trail is at or above 10,000 feet elevation.

I have watched several of your videos today, you can probably guess why, but at the end of the day, I have really enjoyed watching you two, from packing the stuff on the kitchen table to the first camp and riding into this video. I have recalled a lot of memories of some of the stuff my dad and I did when I was your sons age. Mostly hunting and fishing and some 4 wheeler and rode bikes tuff, nothing like this, but seeing this video still brought back some good fond memories. Hit a good section of the Rainbow Trail on my mountain bike. I found it very challenging and at the time I couldnt fathom how motorcycles navigate those bench cuts.. Great riding in this video.
I'm from Iowa and have a friend that live in the Mt's near Basalt, he took me to the Rainbow trail a few years ago, he has a couple KTM's, 250 and a 300 that we rode, perfect for that trail(I bring a Triumph Bonneville with me to CO but of course that's not going to do any good there) We took a good part of the day ridding it, a lot of rest breaks and water breaks, but we made it, not bad for a couple 60 plus old guys. Your video brought back some good memories of that day, I'd like to do it one more time before I'm to old to ride. Thanks for the vid

I miss this kind of riding. I bought the Ten to do mountain roads/trails. But now see it's too large. But don't look forward to riding a 450 across the country either. Will back track this adventure.
Decades ago, riding off road in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, one of us always carried a block and tackle. Other rider had a good length of quality rope and/or steel cable. Came in very handy when a motorcycle when down a hillside, without the rider. 3 guys got the bike back up in 20 minutes. Without that gear, we would needed to return in a 4x4 with winch. About 2 hours away! Frequent breaks, with water and energy snacks, are always necessary doing your TAT. Unplanned overnight is okay if really tired. Just pick a camp before low light, cook/eat before dark. And keep the bear spray on your body. Although sometimes the mosquitoes/bugs are the worst.
Looks fun and rough. I don't have a ton of trail experience, especially single track. My off road bike is a DR650. Kind of a beast for tight rough single track.
Similar thing happened to me and some friends in north GA. While retrieving a bike that had dropped a front tire over the ledge, I had set my helmet on the ground a little ways back. Once we got the bike up my buddy took a few steps backwards and kicked my helmet down the hill! It tumbled for what seemed like forever before finally stopping in a thicket. He knew he had to get it lol! Took about 30 minutes and he was completely worn out by the time he got back up!
Im also going to say this, it is nice to watch you guys rides these bike, not complaining about them flaming out, blah blah blah, nice to see guys just ride it like it was meant to be riden. Dale

Welcome to the beginning of what you call hard Enduro that's like the minor classes I'm used to the heavier ones they look on their next adventure 👍👍😁🇺🇸
I’m curious about how taking such a long trip on those bikes worked out. Everything I hear about the 450 suggests such a short maintenance intervals that I would think it wouldn’t really be suited to long travel. Did you stick to the service schedule or did you stretch it out? I’ve often wondered what would happen if you followed the same maintenance schedule as the CRF300L. I want to do a bunch of the BDR rides with my son and we are still trying to decide on the right bike so any info you can provide about your experience with the 450 would be helpful. Great videos and narration! Very inspiring. ✌️
We stretched the oil changes a bit (700-1000 miles), we changed it about once per week. It wasn’t too bad, we just kept the tools with us and stopped at motorcycle shops or auto parts stores and changed it in the park lot. I really enjoyed the 450, I felt like it was the right bike for me for this trip.
mannnnn very cool. I run a Husqvarna FE350 and actually just spent 3 weeks riding trails like these. I know it seems counter intuitive but speed is your friend on those loose rocks. I expect you know that after all the riding you are doing but I thought it worth mentioning. If you like a challenge do the ride out to Prudhoe Bay in AK. Run the Haul road in the rain lol. Took me 19 hours to make the run south on the Haul Road during a rain storm slick as snot springs to mind. That sucker is only like 400 miles. Not done the TAT. It's on the list though. The ride from ATL to Prudhoe in AK, 13000 round trip 3.5 weeks on a BMW R1200GSA is the best I have ever done. Sure done MOAB and all the usual places but the AK ride is something else. I am really enjoying your vids, thanks for sharing.

Such trails are meant to leave you exhausted and satisfied. Well done dealing with rocks and roots and real steepness of that trail.
Thanks. Slept good that night.
@@BillyTyo I know that feeling very well lol 😆
Best of luck on your future ventures
The challenge is also a very satisfying part of the adventure, not to mention the beauty, I know I enjoy being challenged along the way!
Great riding, especially with luggage. Standing, lots of great balance. You are also NOT used to the altitude. Side hills are bitch with luggage.
That was awesome thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
I miss this kind of riding. I bought the Ten to do mountain roads/trails. But now see it's too large. But don't look forward to riding a 450 across the country either. Will back track this adventure.
The 450 wasn’t too bad on the highway, just had to take it easy, luckily there isn’t much highway on the TAT
That sounds like a good idea.
Looks fun and rough. I don't have a ton of trail experience, especially single track. My off road bike is a DR650. Kind of a beast for tight rough single track.
Yeah, that would be a lot to handle on single track. The 450 wore me out.
Wow, sounds like quite an adventure. I was so glad my bike didn’t go over the hill, not sure how we would have got it out
Great video!! Had many days like this myself and know exactly how y’all were feeling. You powered thru! Nice work
Thank you. Slept good that night. Ride on.
Thanks guys, great video
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing, looked pretty hard especially when you know your far away from home. Rekluse ?
It was tough but a lot of fun. We do not have the Rekluse clutch, but that would have been nice.
Im also going to say this, it is nice to watch you guys rides these bike, not complaining about them flaming out, blah blah blah, nice to see guys just ride it like it was meant to be riden.
Dale
Thanks, we loved the bikes, had a blast on them
So glad you finally posted more from your trip
Thanks for watching, lots more to come. Been busy getting ready for GNCC racing season, but had some time this week to work on TAT videos.
@@BillyTyo I was really thinking about running the lacc series down here in Louisiana then I think about how old and out of racing shape I am in and figure the injuries will not out weight the reward lol
@@mattbarrois8675 ha, that’s probably smart 😂
@@BillyTyo well I don't want to embarrass those young boys too much either lol
@@mattbarrois8675 good point!
Looks like a lot of fun. Good job!
Thanks!
Great video! Colorado boy here loving the perspective from some hard core out of staters. If you are ever back in Colorado you should also try the South San Juan mountains. It is likely that you will see even fewer riders.
Would love to bring the KTM 250 back to CO and do some more exploring
Always makes it tough riding with a bunch of gear strapped to the bike and your back.
Well done video. Thanks for sharing it. Your opening clips brought back some very specific memories. You guys are good riders, I think I struggled more than you did. 😎
Thanks. That trail is tough!
Good stuff....been out of dirt biking for 10 years...few years back did a tour out in montrose co.... so beautiful there!...really need to get back on a bike...
Do it! I was off of them for many years and just got back on last year
There is no medicine like riding, especially off-road riding!
Stumbled upon this video again after a year.... happy to report i am back in the game, purchased a 23 ktm 500 exc-f about a month ago... enjoy your videos! Good stuff!
really great video man that ride looks tough as hell!
Thanks, it was a tough day, but one of the highlights of our trip. Glad you enjoyed the video.
This video of the trails is awesome. I wouldn't want to take my KLR through those rocks.
Thanks! KLR would be tough on those rocks. The CRF has motocross like suspension, so it was all good
Would you please tell me which section you rode? Maybe in terms of access and egress points? Thank you very much. I greatly enjoyed this video of you two.
We entered at the Hayden Creek Campground near Cotopaxi, CO and exited at Bear Creek near Salida
awesome vid! All the Salida locals(me) will find it hilarious. The Rainbow Trail is a favorite. Only five miles from town with many access points. Cheers!
We loved Salida, what a cool town. We had no idea what we were getting into when we started up Rainbow with loaded down motorcycles, but it was one of the best days on the Trans America Trail for us.
So I now know that I cannot do the whole TAT on my Multistrada, at least this part of it. Great footage, thanks
If you go with Sam's route there are not difficult sections like this. This trail was an option on Kevin's route
Makes me miss racing enduro on my Yamaha IT cool vid bro, thanks
Welcome to the beginning of what you call hard Enduro that's like the minor classes I'm used to the heavier ones they look on their next adventure 👍👍😁🇺🇸
Gr8 vid! Nice to be on 450's!
man living in Florida this is what I need! thx for the Vid
Great video! Hope you guys brought some Ibuprofen lol. We have some great single track in Utah as well. Enjoy the ride!
Thanks, we wanted to explore Utah more, but by the time we got there we were wearing down and ready to get the trip done
Yes, a little bit of momentum goes a long way on the rocks. AK sounds amazing, would love to check it out some day. Thanks for watching.
