I've done the entire thing twice on an XR650L. Also did the Shadow of the Rockies Trail from El Paso to Baggs, Wyoming and the Mississippi Hill Country Trail. I put 37,000 miles on that bike and gave it to a friend with a mighty knock in the engine. I lost my wallet in Nevada along with $800 and some other stuff when my fanny pack fell off in the middle of nowhere. I rode 430 miles that day before I found it and made it to the motel. That was the last time I ever carried my wallet in a fanny pack. I doubt if I took two dozen photos along the way and not a single video, but man, do I have some great memories!
About 20 years ago when I was trucking, I got a cash advance in NV, left the money on the counter, and took off. 100 miles later I realized it and stopped to call the truck stop. She said she found the money. I told her where I was and I would turn around and come back. She said no, she would bring it to me. When she got there, I hugged her, gave her $60 and kept $40. What a sweet girl.
Thanks for sharing this. Due to old age and health, I can no longer make long rides like this. I was able to make long off-road trips on my 95 BMW R 1100 GS a few years ago. Thanks for helping me see this once again. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
That is one of my top memories from the trip. Ironically, that bridge wasn’t actually on the TAT, it was as we were diverting off the route and onto pavement, so that we could get a new tire at the Cycle Gear in Granite Pass.
I'm only 5mins into the vid but just wanted to say I love the way you edited it with the music and then occasional comments on comms back and forth. Very enjoyable. Just liked and subscribed.
You're better off engine braking when running out of gas (if you can't turn the bike off), the fuel cutoff while engine braking will let you save more than at idle. Have had to do that a couple times in Nevada and Idaho to make sure I got to the next town.
Yeah, that coasting contest was just for fun-we weren’t really running out of gas. But riding back from our TAT ride, I did have to draft a truck heading east out of Bend, OR, in order to get to some gas. Amazing how much that extended my range (and how sketchy it was)! Love your channel, BTW. Thanks for all you do!!
I want to do this run on a coming of age ride with my son when he turns 18 before I send him off to manhood been researching it for some months . I work on wild land fires as a water tender and get to see things people can only dream of . And try to explain the sights and beautiful wilderness of our beautiful country so I figured I’ll just show him by doing this leg of the TAT . Thanks for sharing your experience what a great ride ! Cheers

Amusing trip with spectacular views always fun to be out there in the back country. Can't wait for my adventure as it starts next weekend also with a great group of friends, few more days of work and it all begins 12 days of wind therapy.
I lived in Gunnison Lake City and did all those roads many many times. Now I regrettably live in the desert of Southern Utah. Your TH-cam makes me want to move back.
Great stuff!! And I gotta disagree with anyone who complains about the music. Mostly because whoever picked it has great taste. Love the deadish jam bandish stuff in the beginning, the acoustic in the middle, some bluesy stuff ... Nice work.
Amazing trip ! You guys have some fantastic riding in the states! Here in the UK we have lots of technical trails but nothing I would consider as adventure riding like this. I will try and do the tat in the next few years I hope!
Absolutely here in the South East there's hardly any Green Lane routes. I would of kept my Pan America Special rather than trade in for a FatBoy if we had.
Bummer that Ophir Pass was closed - that would have been exciting to watch on a GS. I'm planning to go back and do just the alpine loop and Moab stuff again, and hit some of the passes we missed going through on the TAT.
@@MotoTherapy yeah, that's what I was referring to..I think that is the green route. Eagle canyon is on the south side of 70 and you actually cross under the twin bridges of I 70. Pretty cool picture but I didnt see it in your video. I'm thinking sams route takes you north out of Utah and into Idaho now and avoids the 600 miles of Nevada which was one of my favorite parts.
How many miles per tank are you getting on that 890? I have a PC6 on mine and wondering about how many miles I will get once loaded down. Great video!!
At the very beginning of the video it shows a short highlight one of the bikes (I think the KTM) dumped over and the rider rolling in the river. Never saw that in the main video. Where and when was that? GREAT VIDEO
I sliced my rear tire west of Ephraim (directly south of SLC). The closest replacement tire we could find was in Provo, so we diverted to Provo and then reconnected with the trail from there. As you said, looping around the Salt Lake is of limited interest, and we were also riding during the big heat wave with temps well into the 100s. So, after dealing with the tire (double-plugged, couldn't get the bead to reset, etc.) in the middle of nowhere for most of a day in the extreme heat and wind, and having already diverted to the north, missing that section was also a safety call.
Nice! Smart move taking Sam's tracks you wouldn't wanna be on a big bike going to Ouray on Alpine loop and over Imogene.. Cinnamon and California to Silverton is way to go.
Great video. I met you guys at suches a couple of years ago. My buddy and I rode the Tat coast to coast this year too. We rode from North Carolina back to the Atlanta area in late April and headed west June 21 ams got back in late July after riding home on-road. Sorry we missed you. Let me know if you come to suches or western NC.
Is this sams route? Not really recognizing anything west of green river...may have to try it for some new scenery, it looks much easier than kevins route. I recognize the closed gate in oregon, there is a workaround there...did you find it?
Hey Beautiful video, how do you like your KTM, I have 390 adventure I’m thinking of upgrading to 890. I know it’s probably great off-road but how comfortable it is on pavement or highway?
The 890 was my favorite ADV bike to ride off pavement, and it was quite comfortable on pavement (second to an Africa Twin I had also owned), but I sold it because my KTM dealer was being stupid about honoring issues that should clearly be warrantied.
@@MotoTherapy thanks for letting me know, I only have one issue the engine was stalling when was cold it took sometimes up to four times to run but they fix it on the warranty they just upgrade system and now everything is good for the last 4000 miles.
On this trip, our solution was to ride during a record-setting heatwave and drought--it only rained/snowed on us moderately for about 30 minutes at a high elevation near Silverton, CO 😂 But seriously, this is a good question. On other rides, we have delayed departure from campgrounds in order to let our tents dry, or we have packed them wet, then set them up at the next campground with enough time for them to dry. Worst case (when rain is inescapable) is to retreat to a hotel and try to dry them in the room. Other creative solutions like finding an overhang at an abandoned gas station, etc. might also be possibilities when the rain is relentless. Note: I usually pack my tent in its own dry bag. Reason: To keep it dry when riding, and if it does have to be packed wet, to prevent it from co-mingling with my dry stuff and getting it wet, too. I also pack my sleeping bag and bedding in its own dry bag, for a similar reason (to ensure it stays dry).
There were only a few spots that were technical enough to make me wish I was on a smaller bike. If it was me, I'd ride the big bike if I was with a buddy, and the little bike if I was solo. Best wishes!
Its crazy there is parts of the states this unpopulated.... In canada its like this everywhere cause you know we only populate 8% of the land we own, but america theres a town every 15 min it seems.

Hans can ride that beast anywhere. It was helpful that he had some good skills for those passes. Having ridden the route with him, I wouldn't recommend a beginner (or even an intermediate) rider take a fully loaded GSA on some of those sections.
What a fantastic way to make memories! Best wishes on your trip! We were using Sena 10C Evos. We have used both Sena and Cardo comm units in the past--both work well.
