PROCESS:
My Hair - 2 step process (only do this once if you have light or virgin hair)
Step 1:
1. Mix 1 box of L'Oreal HiColor HiLites in Magenta with 70 mLs of developer
2. Apply to hair on shaft and ends ONLY
3. Cover head with plastic bag or shower cap for 20 - 25 minutes
4. Apply remaining color to roots
5. Re-cover and leave on for another 5 - 10 minutes
6. Wash hair out in COLD water
Step 2:
1. Repeat 1 - 2. Do not apply to roots again unless they didn't come out bright enough.
2. Cover hair and leave on for 30 - 35 minutes
3. Wash out hair in COLD water
Extensions:
I used 18 in. Euronext extensions from Sally's in Chestnut Brown
1. Mix 2/3 box of Magenta color with 1/3 box Red color and 70 mLs of developer
2. Lay extensions out on aluminum foil piece by piece
3. Paint color onto each weft of hair, making sure to completely saturate the hair
4. Wrap up in foil and leave on for 20-30 minutes
5. Rinse in COLD water
Hope this helps! Happy coloring!! :)

After watching soooo many videos , researching dyes , and watching this video in particular a million times ... I finally did it :D my hair is now this color. Thank you ! 💕
MelanieMonroee. was ur hair colored dark brown or naturally dark?
MelanieMonroee. was ur hair colored dark brown or naturally dark?
MelanieMonroee yes please reply
dying my hair red today, and also making a video!!! ahhh I just found your channel through that reason! and I am loving it! turned on my notifications alert to tell me whenever you upload! :))
Same I'm about to dye mine too
This is my comfort video for dying my hair and I just spent 10 minutes searching for it, I can’t believe it’s been 9 years 😢
This is literally by far the best tutorial for dying your hair red, and I'm pretty sure I've seen like a million! So I hope your way will work on my hair, and see how it goes. Just wanted to let u know that this is by FAR one of the better tutorials on youtube for dying hair red!
After it starts to fade and such does your hair go back to normal?
I'm glad you found this helpful! Ok..
1) I would go with at least 4 boxes to be on the safe side. It's always a better idea to get more than what you think you might need. If you don't end up needing to use all of the boxes, you can always save them for later when you do a touch-up.
2) There are semi-permanent brands like Manic Panic that you can use. Semi-permanents won't lift your hair color though to make it bright red. You'll get more of a red tint. If you want your hair like mine...
Manic panic vampire red is cool, but it’s SUPER MESSY! 😂
I looked for hours to find a good video on how to make dark hair (mine was almost black with a slightly lighter regrowth) into a burgundy/cherry cola red and finding your video literally saved me. It helped me figure out how much/what process to use and yours looks great. thank you!!
I stumbled upon this video in an impulse moment of contemplating dying my hair bright red again, and I just have to say this girl is really alluring! She's gorgeous and easy going. I could listen to her videos all day.
hotrockgoddess Wow. Thanks :)
Hi!!! I have really dark and color resistant hair. I wanted to dye it dark red ( i mean not so bright but still red) and i went to a professional stylist but the color didnt come out as I wanted ( it was really dark, nobody noticed I dye it). Then i try out Garnier hair dye, but still, you cant even see any red on my hair. What tone do you recommend for me, if as I said I dont want really bright, Magenta or Red?? Thank you so much for your help.
Magenta has the pink undertone and (hot) red has the orange undertone...
If that makes sense to you...🤔
This really worked I have a very dark hair not dark brown. So I dyed my hair deep auburn first then week later I dyed my hair with the color magenta only and my hair is red u can totally tell even by pictures I was ganna use red dye the next day but my hair came out perfect without so I didn't use it. It's been two days now with my red hair and I love it. Thanks for uploading and u very pretty.
You have the best video out in the internet. No one else tells exactly how to do it and how long and stuff. Thank you for making this video 💕
Wow ! Thank you so much I've been searching all over for a video that really answered the questions I had before actually trying this myself!! Love it !
Love love this video I just have one quick question. How long did the color last before you had to touch up?
i use this dye and it lasts for a a longtime. just need to stay ahead of the grow out
Definitely dying my hair red
I've always used the L'oreal HiLights color but my hair just looks red only right under the sun. This is such good info to get it brighter. I shall actually try this because I don't want to bleach my curly hair, cause it might ruin my ends. thanks Samantha!
I've visited your channel before but idk I've just fallen in love with it randomly at 2am. Lmao (:
:)
I used the exact same products, I had dark brown hair like a blackish brown and I used the l'oreal highlights in Magenta and 30 Vol developer , my roots deff came out brighter than the rest , the rest of my hair was like a brownish red , so I went back to Sally's and got a cherry lush color to dull my roots and I ended up using the cherry lush color on my entire hair and it came out purplish red , which was so cute so 3 weeks later I re dyed my hair using the magenta highlights again and now it's a nice red color .
do u have pictures?
+Yara Valdez yeah check out my Instagram : ciaoobelllaaa , I have pictures on there it's a few weeks ago
Tip: dye ends first then dye roots! ❤
Thank you so much for this tutorial, I've been looking for a product that would lift my hair to a red burgundy color and I also wear clip in extensions as well and was unsure of how to go about coloring them. your video was very helpful, thanks again.
...use the l'oreal dye that I used the first time. You can use the semi-permanent color to touch it up later on (that will also be a lot less damaging than continuously using the l'oreal for touch-ups).
3) It shouldn't be noticeably damaging at all if your hair is virgin, so don't worry!
I recommend that you watch my video on tips for living with red hair before you make the change (if you haven't already). The link is in the description of this video! :) Good luck!
You used 30 volume developer
in fact this is like BLEACHING your hair...
It's misleading to say that you achieved the red colour without bleaching. You used a developer which contains peroxide, peroxide is a bleaching agent. It is impossible to dye dark hair a light vibrant colour without a bleaching agent.
Anne-Louise Oates yeah but it's definitely not as damaging versus bleach plus it's risky to bleach your hair on your own. This is a great alternative for an at home job.
ALL hair color uses peroxide, unless it's a temporary or semi-permanent vegetable dye such as Manic Panic. Eventhough she used 30 volume twice, it's still less damaging than pre-bleaching. I've used this color before and I use it with 40 volume to make it more intense. But I def wouldn't recommend this dye if your hair already has a lot of damage.
I use conditioner instead of developer and mine comes out as vibrant 😍
Jalyssa Rodrigues
Anne-Louise Oates peroxide is used to add volume to the hair color it's not stripping the hair from its natural nutrients so it's not misleading.
Just found you by googling red hair and have been watching your videos ever since. So glad I found you, I have been wanting to dye my hair red for a year now, but didn't want to bleach it. So now I am going to try it this weekend your way!!! Fingers crossed it comes out looking as good as yours!
Great vid. Super informative. I'm going for it! Dark brown to bright red. Your hair looks amazing. Wish me luck!!
mmmm, I don't like it. Its very messy.
Wow you literally stole Nichole Guerriero 's video
Nichole wasn't the first ever in the world to make a video like this. Js.
Nicole Mintz Not sure why I put an 'h' there back then, but thanks for correcting me. +10 points!
Yes shes the only one to do this.. smh
I'm glad you found it helpful :) And no, I have not tried Luxy, but I've seen a lot of people say that they got a really bad set and that the customer service was terrible, so they had a hard time getting their money back. I'm just skeptical of ordering hair online in general. But I can 100% promise you that the Sally's ones are fantastic. I've tried a lot of other brands and been wearing clip-in and sew-in extensions for 7 years now, and I always go back to the Sally's brands.
That hair color looks amazing on you! Im doing mine right now, thanks for the tips girl
Please watch my "Tips for Living With Red Hair" video where I explain that! :)
Thank you! It depends on how much you wash it and how much effort you put in to making the color last. I had to touch mine up after 4 weeks.
Hey, Meredith! I have a separate video talking about that more called "Tips for Living With Red Hair" but basically, I just avoided washing it as much as possible, which prolonged the fading process, and by the time it was faded enough that it needed to be refreshed (about 4 or 5 weeks later), my roots were grown in enough to just retouch the entire thing with the same product. I know other people use Manic Panic or other semi permanent dyes though.
so glad i found your video (a year later...but still) :) i had my hair REALLY BRIGHT RED but had to dye it dark because of work and now I want to dye it again but magenta...tks for sharing all your experience xoxo
You're very welcome! :) And they're well worth buying! Mine have lasted me for YEARS, even after coloring them multiple times, bleaching them, constantly applying heat to them, wearing them to the beach, etc.
Thanks for the suggestion! I actually mentioned that in my newest video on how to maintain red hair :) I never tried it myself because I wasn't planning on keeping the color for very long, but I've heard of others doing that.
that colour looks amazing I've got mine done as well in magenta and I love love love it!!!
Love this video. I dyed my hair tonight using 2 boxes of red. I definitely need to redo it one more time to get it all even.
I've tried a few different ones over the years (and I love them all). But the ones in this video are Euronext.
I am definitely getting this color as soon as I get better from this winter sickness
Thank you :) And yes, when I was researching how to get my hair this color, I read that blonde hair will just turn pink (that's part of the reason why I got light brown extensions instead of blonde). If you want to try it again, try dying your hair a light brown color first so you have a base on your hair (blonde hair can't absorb red). And if your skin is very fair, I would try going with a darker red so it doesn't wash you out. Hope this helps! :)
Euronext. They're really great quality, and they've lasted me a really long time. I still have my first set that I've ever purchased from 6 or 7 years ago.
Thank you! I love it too. It's my new favorite hair color :) Have you been having a hard time with it fading so far?
Please watch my "Tips for Living with Red Hair" video. And to answer your first question, developer is a lifting agent (kind of works like bleach), and whenever your hair is being lifted/lightened from it's natural color, it gets damaged to some extent. I'm not a professional or anything, so I don't know the exact science, but that's just my interpretation.
I LOVED your hair on this red!!! gorgeous!!!!
Please watch the red hair playlist on my channel! I have an FAQ video and a "Tips for living with red hair" video. You'll get all of your answers there.
Hi Cailyn, I have a video called "Tips for Living With Red Hair" where I describe what I did to maintain and retouch the color! But basically, I would use the hicolor hilights for my roots every 4 - 6 weeks, and a semi permanent dye in between to brighten the color.
This video was exactly what I was looking for, very informative, and it showed the actual process. 👍👍👍👍Good job
Yeah, when I said "without bleach" I meant without pre-bleaching. And I already used this several times between touch-ups and also just changing my hair back and forth from brown to red.. It didn't do too much damage to my hair considering I used it probably 5 times within 4 months. Not compared to other things I've done to it in the past lol. And I honestly didn't experience THAT much fading, but I also only wash my hair once a week. I think it just varies person to person. Thank you though :)
Thanks! I would say you could either try using a 20 volume developer or try the hicolor line. It's called L'Oreal HiColor.. It's basically the same thing, but they have some deeper/darker red shades.
I know! :( I had really bad allergies. I noticed while I was editing this how nasally I sound, and it drives me crazy lol.
LOVE the color on you. Thanks for sharing the info.
No problem! :) If the black is faded and you haven't dyed it since, I think it will definitely work. Just be careful if there are some spots with some stubborn black, b/c those might not take as well as the rest of your hair. You might have to do it twice like I did. For underneath - if its bleached, then it will come out brighter than the rest of your hair. If its just your natural color underneath, then it should come out the same as the rest of your hair. And how long to wait for what?
This is perfect. Thank you for posting it. Im going to try it this week with new extentions. My roots grow fairly slow, but when I want to touch up the color, what do you suggest? I know you used both red and magenta. But do you think I can just dye my roots? Or would I have to do my entire head for a touch up? Thanks for all your help. amazing video!
great video sam!! and you sure can rock that red hair :)
Thank you :) The extensions are the 18 inch Euronext in the color Chestnut Brown. They're from Sally's.
Awesome Samantha!!!:)
You look BEAUTIFUL. I wanted to ask, if I did loreal hicolor hilights in Magenta, (2×, once a month) then the third month could I use a permanent dye on top of it?
This video was the point of decision making for me. I'm dying my hair red this Saturday. :)
I was nervous about it because my skin isn't exactly white or pale, it's kind of like your skin tone, and it looks great on you so I'm not too nervous about it anymore.
Thank you. :)
I like the way your hair came out it's pretty
so cool thnx... i have dark roots but already red hair... tired of glossing it and i think i will try today... and if i fail I will just add it to lessons learned!! thnx for the tips on this... my Hair is JET black and I need 40 developer to lift... so wish me luck... roots are one inch of blackness
You have no idea how much I needed this video omfg.
Thanks so much for posting this, I saw on the box that it says to use an applicator bottle but I was wondering if it would work with a mixing bowl and brush
For my real hair, I just used the magenta color. For my extensions, I decided to mix magenta with red because I kind of thought since they were lighter, they would pick up the pink undertones of the magenta more, and I didn't want that. It was just to sort of customize the color a little bit more. It's totally up to you though which color(s) you choose to use.
I think your hair looks so pretty!
I like how you explained everything. It looks really good. Thanks for the vid!
Your video was very helpful. :) I think your hair came out great! I'm thinking of doing a Ombre but not sure yet.
my first attempt looked like yours, almost exploded. but im trying it a second time, hopefully it comes out like yours!
You'll just have an ombre red. My hair was ombre before I went red for the second time, and I liked how the ombre red looked. You can watch my FAQ video to see how it looked. If you want it to all be the same color and brightness, then just apply it to the dark parts first and then put it on the lighter parts 10 minutes or so before washing it all out.
Your hair looks amazing. I'm wondering if you washed your hair before dying??
Alright thank you so much for this video because you've answered all the questions I had when it came to this color.
I’ve dyed my hair darkblue maybe 5+ years ago and about a year ago I dyed it maroonish but nothing happened only outside it looks maroon, would I have to get 30 volume developer ? And if so, how many oz for two bottle colors 😰?
I have a separate video explaining all of that! :) The link is in the description of this video.
Love the color!! Very helpful. Thanks!
This colour looks amazing on you!
Yeah, you're right. I've used color removers before, and that is another option.. that's probably a better idea too for people who have several layers of dark color in their hair. Thanks for your suggestion!
Omg sam!!! 6 yrs later ur a successful hairstylist!!! Mashallahhhh x
Really liked this tutorial. I am definetely going to try this I really like the fuchsia undertone in your extensions, I think thats really cool. Also, gorgeous eyes, the red really makes them pop! :)
The best tutorial out there LOVE IT
I went to the salon to dye my hair, then a month later dyed it myself with the boxes you get from cvs. Can I still dye my hair with the lOreal hicolor? Or will it burn my hair?
thank you!!! I was looking for something like this for a long time :) The color looks really great on you! graciaasss
Love the color! Hopefully my hair will come out just as gorgeous! :D
Great tutorial! Worked for me thanks samantha!
I feel weird about the stuff touching my scalp. Is it safe??
Hey I was wondering if I bleached my hair like 7 months ago & after like 2 months I dyed it black but now over time I certain parts of my black hair dye has washed out.How do you think I should do it?
mine came out darker than your first application of magenta. if I were to put another application over mine will It brighten it up? would I need olto use a higher developer?
Thank you :) I'm glad you found it helpful!
I've never heard of that trick before! Wow, I wish I knew about that before. Thanks for sharing :)
I love this so much ! I really want this to be my hair color but since my hair isn't that dark should I use the same ratio?
hey sam im trying to get the ariana grande color is this color the same?
thanks doll! your hair looks wonderful.
Thank you. I'm glad you found it helpful! :)
Samantha Vay for that brand u used to dye ur hair... Do u know if they have purple and turquoise becuz I wanted to do a peekaboo of those two colors and my hair is really dark brown
L'oreal HiColor HiLights is from the brand MajiContrast right?
Samantha Vay since I had to bleach a little to lift all the color off my hair *I had previously colored it black* what permanent color would you recommend for me to put on to obtain that red? I am using manic panic temporary for now.
Before I did a bleach wash on my hair, I did the Loreal High color high lights and it did not work at all. So I used the bleach wash to strip the color...Now looking for a good red to apply over the bleach..Thank you
So my hair is in ombre style but my top part is not virgin. But I really want to dye it all like that so what would I have to use?
Great vid!! Very helpful. I haven't tried it yet but had another product, manic panic and used that. Uber failure. My hair is deep black. Would the method in your video work for me? Also, Should I be using 40 volume developer instead of 30 volume developer? I don't lie when I say I have really black hair.
Love the colour, it really suits you. I have the same colour, I only changed to it a few weeks ago. I did it myself & am dreding doing the regrowth. Not sure how to tackle that, because the original colour needs a lift.
Please reply because I really need advice. My hair is like a medium brown with different brown shades so I'm just using a 20 developer, but I've watched tutorials for this color before and they just used two tubes of the magenta and it came about the red I want, but u used magenta and red so now I'm wondering if I should get a red tube..or should I just get two magentas?
Ok so I'm dying my hair lavender next week and I will be using everything you are using
(except purple) and I was wondering how much do you think it will damage my hair? Because my hair was about 30 inches long and I cut it so it will grow because I had a lot of bleached ends so I was just wondering if it would effect the growing of my hair...
Hey Samantha:) Thank you so much for this awesome and informative video:)
My hair is dyed with Blue Black permanent color. I want to do the L'oreal Hicolor Hilights in Magenta. Should I use a color remover beforehand? I want a dark magenta purple red like yours...Do you think the color remover would make it bright red? I don't want bright red. Looking forward to hearing from you:)
Thank You So Much:)
hi, i love ur tutorial it really wanna try it so should i buy the loreal hicolor hilight online? i found some of it on ebay.
Samantha Vay my question is... For that brand that u used to dye ur hair do they have turquoise and purple I was just wondering becuz I wanted to do a peekaboo of those two colors
hello so my hair is virgin all the dye that i had lastly is gone but i want my hair as bright as yours how do i do it? last time i dyed it magenta i used a 40 developer but had my hair bleached so i dont know how it will turn out again if i just use the 40 with the magenta. any help is appreciated thanks
