Fiiiinally, thank you for posting a thorough but to the point video. All similar videos on TH-cam either lack critical information or go on chatting about unrelated nonsense.
I've seen other gardening videos suggesting that basil will not survive outdoors in Scotland, as such keeping mine in a greenhouse. I am trying the above process currently, I was able to extract 23 basil seedlings from a 50p Lidl sourced basil 'plant'
This was amazing. Thank you so much! The main part I was interested in was how to separate them, but I also got a few extra tips along the way, so thanks!
Thank you for such an informative and entertaining video :) was having trouble understanding written tutorials on these and was glad there was a very clear video out there on this
I just repotted my 5 rootbound basil. I chopped off the tips for two plants and left off the 3 other plants because they are already into their 10th week and they're literally a foot tall. I was worried they might get too shocked if I pruned their tops off. I'll see what happens in the next week. But thanks for this!
Change your audio settings to mono, and both channels will play the same track, no problem if you know how to use your device. I do think your comment to be a little rude though seeing as how the Lady puts all this knowledge out for free, and making videos takes a lot of time.
I thought the same and soaked it in water to take it apart, and my basil doesnt look do good... it looks much more droopy and unhappy than the ones in the video...
Thank you for this video. I totally understand this concept of splitting it up. What if I just want to have one plant alive? Meaning will the smaller plants just die off, and eventually I would be left with just one or two stronger ones?
@@esque8961 oh it works so well its unreal! You can even cut branches off, put them in a cup of water (roots will show in 10 ish + days). Boom another plant!
i made the mistake of planting my whole supermarket pot into a bigger one and letting it grow, at the moment i think its growth has stagnated due to both lack of sunny weather and the different plants are probably stealing nutrients from each other. i think i will try splitting them apart and hopefully they'll start to grow better!!
This video was very helpful! I have planted and grown far too many grains into one small pot so I'll definitely follow that! Once they've grown individually, what should their final place as I don't have a garden , only a balcony ?
Thank you very much for the straight to the point presentation. It is so very easy to understand and follow your useful tips. May The Lord Jesus Christ bless you, Amen.
Propagating basil is SO easy you don't need sound . You can even cut one of the stems below a leaf node and put it in water , wait 2-3 weeks , when the roots are longer than 2" , then plant in a rich soil and water with worm castings .
are they gonna grow new leaves every time I cut off the bigger leaves? Thank you. I love pesto pasta so I love to grow basil instead of buying them all the time. Thank you!
Thanks I've just tried mint too, I also got 6 new plants from 1 basil plant and then tried coriander split into 2 plants, so far that's working, they're in my poly tunnel
I should have watched this before I potted mine 😂 I just repotted the whole lot in to a bigger pot and some of them have killed eachother stealing nutrients
I hate hearing the ripping sound of roots... I re-potted store basil today. It was so rootbound that it looked like more root than soil. I tried soaking the root enmeshed soil in water but still couldn't separate the stems without tearing the roots.
I love the idea with the toilet paper rolls. This is an older video so maybe you've changed your style, but you should really talk. Show us your personality and tell us about what you're doing.
it's a bad tactic because the cardboard roll has a lot of grooves and the roots really bind themselves on the organic material and then when it comes time to transplant, while getting the plants out of the pots you rip all of the roots and it's a very bad idea to do that. Unlike normal pots which are smooth and the roots dont get stuck to them and you can get the plant out easily without damaging it. Frankly, I cringed watching that part lol.
@@KickBull can't you just take the entire TP roll and put it in soil in a new pot? it will loosen up and decompose. maybe break it a lil bit apart to help out.
I wonder why you didn't top the plants, so that the damaged roots would have less to feed? The tops could have been sprouted! I rinse as much soil of as I can so I tear fewer roots. Sitting on the ground, wearing nice clothes is a bit strange. It's as if you said to yourself, "let's do a video" with little forethought.
Old but still gold video! I always enjoy listening to your voice, I've always found it calming & relaxing. ☺️

So helpful! I just killed my grocery store Basil. I wish I saw this a week ago. Subscribed!

found the sound but had to use headphone plugged into my laptop. It was worth the effort. Thank you
The sound on that video is terrible - thanks for taking the time to crank up the volume though :)

What a super tutorial - thank you so much 👏🙏
my poor plant is so dying. I will give this a try on the ones that are still alive. Thank you for being so informative.
I love this SO much!! Thank you for sharing your expertise!! Now let’s see if my basil makes it!
Thank you so much, I was wondering if I could move my plants from outdoors to inside. Very helpful.

Debbelito The audio is poo! Sorry
Still a great video. Thank you!

great tutorial, exactly what i was looking for!
Encore de belles explications.
Merci
Channel has realy good information, thanks for demo
I like it. However I believe that if you soak the root bound plants in water, you'll get them apart without ripping the roots.
i thought the same but i've heard that basil is very sensitive, so it might cause damage and rot

Wow, what great input in your video. Only note I would suggest is turning your audio up. It's tough to hear your voice.
Gonna try this, my current basil plant is huge and I'd like to make several smaller plants
Hi can i get an update

Thank you! Basil loves plenty of sun and regular watering. It should grow fine in pots on your balcony if it has both.
Thanks for this video
AMAZING!THNAK YOU!

Does it matter if the root tear apart when you separate them? Need to know please.. big thanks
Doing it this way is going to be harder, but you can get away with it, just try not to tear as many as possible.
I have had luck putting the ball in water and washing away as much potting soil as possible. Then it was easier to salvage more of the roots.

Yes they regrow if you cut the stem just above a set of leaves. If you cut all the leaves off the plant then you can kill the plant.
Do you have a tutorial for the garden box structures?
I sure do: th-cam.com/video/K3eKc0eFbIA/w-d-xo.html&
Very useful...
I did this. I also propogated some of them. They are turning brown with spots. Do not look healthy. Any tips?
Start again!
How do you deal with pests outdoors? every time i plant them outside they are ruined within a week.
Hi can I do this for other herbs too?
You could do the same with supermarket mint, too.
Thanks I've just tried mint too, I also got 6 new plants from 1 basil plant and then tried coriander split into 2 plants, so far that's working, they're in my poly tunnel

Casey H i did exactly the same 😂
Great vid thanks, I am worried about breaking the root structure 🤔
They'll recover, don't worry.
So you keep it all inside before the final step?
C"est une bonne methode.
Toujours d"excellentes explications.
Merci...(°+°)
how long did it take for the basil to perk up again
I hate hearing the ripping sound of roots... I re-potted store basil today. It was so rootbound that it looked like more root than soil. I tried soaking the root enmeshed soil in water but still couldn't separate the stems without tearing the roots.
Hi i was wondering can I my basil in side all day
How tall should the seedlings be pleased
As tall as they need to be to have at least two true leaves growing.
I tried this and my basil is growing like crazy. I only put 1 plant in each pot, but I think next year I'll try 2 in each pot for even more basil.
I'm sticking with 1 per pot (1L pots) because the plant will grow bigger. With 2 in there, they are sort of flimsy.
I loved seeing a useful way to use toilet paper rolls
is the white stuff on the outside of the toilet paper tubes mold..? Is that bad for the plant?
Naomi T it’s toilet paper LOL
The audio is too low 😢
Not sure why but I can not hear you and I have phone turned all the way up.
It’s my fault! Sorry 🙈 Audio has never been my strong point but especially not with my earlier videos

@@mangomariel You could, but it takes months to decompose properly, again, i dont see a reason to bother
It looked like an interesting tutorial but there was virtually no sound. Even turned all the way up, I couldn't make out your words.

not just you i had no sound either and only on this video
Me too! Very faint.

😅
because mine look pathetic
Thank you. Excellent video.
Please tide your lovely hair before starting the video as it covers your magnificent work.
I never harden off my plants, waste of time and energy when it will only kill them .5 percent of the time
so i did this and the plants died the next day
The only answer is to try again.
You may have broken the roots.
Audio.
