We had plenty of rosemary all the time. We gave it to our neighbors too. I never watered the rosemary or anything except occasionally I would trim it when I worked in the yard. I had grown green onions outside (bought at grocery store, directly sown root bottoms to soil) and they provided for about 2 years until a windy storm completely destroyed the entire pot. I'm trying again, indoors and they are growing even faster this time. It's been 3 days and they are going crazy. I already had a grow light for some houseplants so green onions are just chilling in the corner of my dining area that is slowly becoming a tiny jungle in the the desert. :) Indoor gardening in very, very rewarding, but word of warning, quarantine new plants before you bring them in with the others. It took me a month to save my plants from fungus gnats. Haha

Never gardened before, but inspired to start! It seems increasingly important to be self sufficient. I appreciate your very well made video & excellent beginners guide! Thank you!
Thank you for giving me the confidence and knowledge to start my first herbs. To stop me from getting overwhelmed I'll focus on a basil plant. Sounds like a good starter plant and pesto is delicious!
This summer I discovered the joys of fresh Basil that I planted in my garden. Now I can't live without it. Since we have 6 months of winter I am looking to try growing indoors. My luck growing anything indoors has been dismal, hopefully this will change that.
I've been growing outside herbs for about 7 years now, and I'm finally convinced that I will never put either basil or flat leafed parsley in a group planter ever again! I consider both herbs the "bully" plants - they completely dominate and overtake everything else! My go-to herbs are Flat leaf parsley, sweet basil, thyme, dill, chives and rosemary. This winter I will attempt my first indoor herb garden. Thanks for the suggestions!
I keep trying to grow basil, but I always get a frustration because they easily die or not germinating. However, my onions and cilantro are nice and giving me a lot of leaves to use for cooking.. When I saw your video, I got motivated again to grow basil. I bought seeds and soil potting mix. I will try your way in growing basil. Thanks a lot for your very detailed steps in growing herbs.

Randomly decided to pick up a couple of planted herbs today. Excited to try this out since I love herbs in my cooking and I need a bit more greenery anyways.
In spite of this guy’s aggressive upward inflection, I learned so much from this. It’s not as difficult to grow as I thought! I was always intimidated by growing plants, but his friendly, positive presentation makes it approachable. Thank you!
Rising inflection is a very Canadian thing. It seems to be more prevalent from Quebec and also not uncommon in Mexican American accents so I think it might have something to do with North American dialects of French and Spanish.
I enjoy the delivery of information and have watched this channel for years. I learn so much every year even though I’ve spent decades gardening. I’ve only been veg gardening for five years and appreciate the straightforward easy to follow info. It is so different than landscape gardening to be sure. Why people just cant be complimentary leaving out the personal comments behooves me. Being a senior, “upward inflection” is something I never heard until sometime in the 90’s. I just hear the voice of someone confident in his abilities whose teachings have benefitted my garden immensely. For that I am thankful.
Ah so the trick is to make holes in the bottom of the cans. Now we know what to do with all these soup and vegetable cans we have piling up! Very informative vid! Thanks a million!
Awesome video Jeff!!! We need to teach the younger generations how to start doing this so they can be more self sufficient. We never know what will happen from one day to the next. Sorry was late busy weekend.🙂 🙏🏻💙🙏🏻
LOVE THIS!!! I'm a huge fan of Arugula and had no idea I could grow it that easily. I'm a fan of every herb you mentioned and just yesterday (7/27/22) I repotted my Sweet Basil, Rosemary, and Sage in a pot together. 🤷🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ Thanks for the many lessons learned. Time to harvest some of my Basil now. 🤣
We are in U.S. Zone 4a Our parsley has come back every year for the past 6 years. The dill has spread from its raised bed to the yard and the edge on the driveway. You should smell that after I mow lol! I think the original seed was planted 8 years ago. I started sage this past spring from seed. The seed came from Italy and is supposed to be good to minus 30 degrees F. It was from the Piedmont area. I had started the same seed many years ago and the plants lasted about 15 years then they died out. I took cutting off my 2 rosemary shrubs to save buying them again. I hope it works...never have done it before. I did 6 rose bush cutting too for my wife...we'll see how that turns out too. A Huge thumbs up for this vid. I always enjoy your knowledge. Take care!
Right on Michael! I can only imagine the smell from freshly mowed Dill, LOL! I think your area is PRIME for Oregano, Sage, and Marjoram....probably do amazing in your setup! Enjoy the weekend. 🙂
I absolutely loved this video. Most videos are hard for me to watch all the way through but the way you executed and delivered your share of knowledge was very straightforward, engaging and honest. I appreciate your filming skills. Subscribed!!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I have Sweet Basil, Dill, Chocolate Mint, Chives, lemon thyme, parsley and fenugreek! I am going to use separate containers. I have a sunny south east window in my dining area. I just need some good soil and food.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms oh! I haveva starter kit for seeds but I will be investing in some nice tin containers like you've shown in the video. This will be an awesome project for my children also.
Honestly, I tried looking at other videos and (no offence to the other content creators) they were just people not targeted towards me and were more showing off their expensive garden than actually giving me information. Your videos were perfect, made me feel that as a middle age dude I can also be a little more into nature.
I started a potted garden for my wife and mother-in-law earlier this summer. It includes basil, purple, basil, spearmint, lemon balm and thyme. I have them in terra-cotta clay pots to have the same style of aesthetic. I’m currently looking for a shelf to put them on inside my kitchen window. My wife was wondering when the jungle’s gonna come in and it’s dropping here in Chicago so I told her soon
Thank you so much. I watched your video for the first time yesterday and started my garden today. I had never planted anything before and decided to start.
I do the "single file" method with my indoor herbs. For things like dill & cilantro I do succession planting so I've always got a pot or two ready to use. Basil is a great indoor plant that keeps producing over & over. When the plants get 5-6 sets of leaves I top off the upper 3 sets & put those into a cup of water to sprout. Those become my next crop of basil plants. Lather, rinse, repeat for endless basil...and pesto, which is easy to make & stores in the freezer indefinitely. 😋
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Right on. One of these days I'd love to come over & meet you in person and see your garden setup. You're near Victoria as I recall. I've got friends over there with direct connections to the Butchart family. I'm not a master gardener by any means, but I know a few things about gardening and I've learned a lot about the history of your area.
Excellent advice! Fabric pots are best, and again, stop watering, really, stop watering! Stick your finger in the soil if you don't get 3 cm of dry soil on top, don't water.
I loved this!!!! Humorous but very informative. I'm growing my herbal tea garden indoors and it's been a fun learning experience, life changing too! 😏👍😌
I have a rosemary plant and just grew mint from the store bought one, in my own compost. It is growing well, but a lot of papaya plants have also started together. Grew green onions from store bought ones. Will try dill the same way
It's so cold here in France but I will try to grow the ciboulette and basil using the knowledge gathered from your video, wish me luck. Much appreciated!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarmsI will try not to haha. How much perlite to potting soil would you suggest starting with for good drainage for these herbs? I was thinking of trying 1/3 perlite and 2/3 indoor potting soil mix so I hope that is not too incorrect 😅
Thank you so much for the great tutorials. What would be great is if you could make a video on how to best grow various vegetables/herbs that require different temperature / humidity settings. I am starting out and I’m overwhelmed on how to for example combine herbs such as basil with greens such as romaine lettuce and spinach. My plan is to put them in my basement which typically in the winter is around 20C. Thank you
The snow storm killed my rosemary in Feb (Arkansas usually doesn't get a week of snow!!) But I had cuttings inside. Now her babies are thriving again outside... will probably bring a few cuttings inside to propagate for just in case🥰

Ah so the trick is to make holes in the bottom of the cans. Now we know what to do with all these soup and vegetable cans we have piling up!
Very informative vid!
Thanks a million!
You could grow an AMAZING herb garden in soup cans! You just gave me an idea......
This is probably the BEST video of it’s kind. Comprehensive, easy to follow, and relevant info. Thank you 👏🏼
Thanks so much Christine...! Too kind! :-)
Awesome video Jeff!!! We need to teach the younger generations how to start doing this so they can be more self sufficient. We never know what will happen from one day to the next. Sorry was late busy weekend.🙂
🙏🏻💙🙏🏻
Totally agree Brandy! And its the easy, quick crops like herbs, and spinach that'll be the best gateway!
I agree! I am gonna teach my children.

You're making a real impact.
@@LoraJettreck Thanks, I'm trying!
Thank you. Needed a 1-stop-shop to get up and running. You gave all the details I need in a concise format. Much appreciated. Cheers!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Oh! I had oregano creeping all over the place to the point that it crowded the thyme and chamomile almost out.
BY FAR, THE BEST HERB VIDEO! EXCELLENT! THANK YOU!!!
This is the first time I've seen your videos but i have to say, you have an excellent delivery and I appreciate the information!
Hey thanks Linda, appreciate that. Cheers!
I absolutely loved this video. Most videos are hard for me to watch all the way through but the way you executed and delivered your share of knowledge was very straightforward, engaging and honest. I appreciate your filming skills. Subscribed!!
Wow, thanks for that!! Very kind of you to say!! :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thank you! I am so ready to get my indoor herb garden started! So inspired. Gonna check out the rest of your videos soon.
@@miasgardenadventures2998 awesome!! What herbs? Separate containers or all together?
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I have Sweet Basil, Dill, Chocolate Mint, Chives, lemon thyme, parsley and fenugreek! I am going to use separate containers. I have a sunny south east window in my dining area. I just need some good soil and food.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms oh! I haveva starter kit for seeds but I will be investing in some nice tin containers like you've shown in the video. This will be an awesome project for my children also.
This was very helpful, I learned a lot about starting a herb garden indoors which is a goal of mine. Thank you!
Right on Steve! Give it a try....do the easy ones first and just keep leveling up man. You got this!
This was a fantastic watch and very educational. Thank you
Hey, thanks for checking it out...appreciated! :-)
Enjoyed your video. We're transplanting thyme today. Started from seed.
@@AndreaDamasccenothanks Andrea! How long did the thyme seeds take to germinate?
You are a GREAT teacher! I Al so like the way you recap
Thanks! Appreciate the kind words and feedback! I dig the recaps too.... Really helps me on my end as well
Honestly, I tried looking at other videos and (no offence to the other content creators) they were just people not targeted towards me and were more showing off their expensive garden than actually giving me information.
Learned alot from this video and already have 4 videos lined up. Thank you.
Excellent video. I found it so helpful. Thank you.
@@namoraxo thanks for watching! Hope you are able to create your own amazing indoor herb garden!
Thank you so much. I watched your video for the first time yesterday and started my garden today. I had never planted anything before and decided to start.
doing a talk on herbs in a couple of weeks and this was so useful and informative. Thank you!
Hey very cool Kim! Are you recording it?
I live in Northern France and struggle to grow herbs so I will try the indoor growing, thank you
This is so helpful, the other videos I’ve watched were no where near as informative. Thank you!
Hey thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I got 3 more herb videos coming out this weekend so there should be a smorgousboard of herb info, ha ha!
So perfect man. Once you get a system, its essentially fresh, free, organic herbs 365 days a year! Well done bro! 🙂
Thank you for mentioning precise ideal temperature ranges
Can't recall any gardeners on youtube mentioning this, only seasons, sun exposure etc
Hey thanks for noticing that. Hope it helps! :-)
Definitely guilty of overwatering. But I'm giving it another go this year. Thanks for a great video!
I loved this!!!! Humorous but very informative. I'm growing my herbal tea garden indoors and it's been a fun learning experience, life changing too! 😏👍😌
so encouraging. the paper towel idea is brilliant. Tu!
This was so helpful. Thank you so much for your attention to detail and encouragement to us new gardeners ☺️
Hey Brittany, glad you liked it, hopefully you'll get some indoor herbs going too! 🙂
Thanks!
Much better than most gardening videos I see. Well done!
Thanks, appreciate it!

Jeff, ever wonder why so many gardeners watch your videos? They get results! You are indeed a public servant! More please.
You're too kind Jim! Far too kind!
I have a rosemary plant and just grew mint from the store bought one, in my own compost. It is growing well, but a lot of papaya plants have also started together. Grew green onions from store bought ones. Will try dill the same way
Right on! You got a lot growin'!
Thank you, for explaining to plant indoor. I will followed your instructions sir, I'm a beginner .
It's so cold here in France but I will try to grow the ciboulette and basil using the knowledge gathered from your video, wish me luck. Much appreciated!
Absolutely love your videos! You are so caring, it's a joy to watch and listen to your instructions. Mahalo Nui Loa from a Canadian expat 🤙🏼
Great video Jeff (especially for beginners) packed with good info. Well done mate. Cheers
Thanks Keith, appreciate it! 🙂
Amazing video! Thank you so much, i just got a rosemary plant and an oregano plant and you inspired me to pick up some seeds!
Thanks Chris! Right on, that's a great start. Don't over water and you'll be aces!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarmsI will try not to haha. How much perlite to potting soil would you suggest starting with for good drainage for these herbs? I was thinking of trying 1/3 perlite and 2/3 indoor potting soil mix so I hope that is not too incorrect 😅
Awesome video! Thanks for all the encouragement!
Cheers Charmaine, thanks so much for watching! :-)
Thank you
Hi, thanks for watching! At 20C, you can grow practically anything, without worry
Lol the overwatering montage had me rolling. That was definitely me 😆
You are terrific…so fun to learn with you…thank you..!!
Thanks! Nice of you to say! Glad to have you aboard!
This video was so helpful and packed with great information. Thanks!
The snow storm killed my rosemary in Feb (Arkansas usually doesn't get a week of snow!!) But I had cuttings inside. Now her babies are thriving again outside... will probably bring a few cuttings inside to propagate for just in case🥰
Right on Stephanie! Did you take cuttings prior because you knew the storm was coming?
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms actually they were there for my cooking convenience, but they rooted and I was able to transplant them outside in spring.
Thanks for the tips on herbs. Your videos are educational and the best. God bless you 🙏
