When my late mother would take cuttings, she put a piece of wax paper over the cup of water. Then she poked a small hole in it for each stem. That way, the stem is supported, the leaves stay out of the water and fewer bugs can get to the water. Use a rubber band to hold the wax paper in place.

I started using the small size plastic bottles you would get say from bottled water , gator aid or other drinks you may buy simply wash it out and start cuttings in it, they hold the cuttings with out having them fall in the water and the are much more stable than a plastic cup that are easy to tip over and the water evaporates far less

Here in Atlanta, I have been very frustrated with basil. I've been buying starter plants at my local Kroger grocery store and they never live very long. This spring Dollar Tree had some little kits of a pot with Sweet Basil seeds (Ocimum basilicum) and a compressed block of something (peat?). Following the directions I soaked the block then put it in the block and added some seeds. It's been on my east-facing front porch for a couple weeks and what do you know, several young leaves are growing! YAY!

Plants from a grocery store aren't the same as those you buy from a garden center. If you want plants to last, buy from a nursery or start from seed.

  • @allanbucher9887
    @allanbucher9887 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

On the subject of twisting roots into your hole...
Dig your hole, build a cone of dirt in the middle... just big enough to lay the roots out and to the bottom. Carefully separate the roots out in a wheel spoke manner around the cone when you set your plant, then cover with your mixture.
the roots will thank you for it. (twisting is great space saver, but, roots need space.) Lay your additives in the trench around the bottom.
This isn't to say your method won't work, but it will allow for faster, stronger, bushier growth in most any garden plant (with pruning, maintenance etc), if the plant sets its roots in a manner that will accept it, of course. Give your roots room to run. Try it.
I get it, not ideal for small transplants, but, I would never twist roots up. There are enough forces working against us.
( the info you provide on your channel is priceless, this is my 2 cents. peace)

    Hi Brian,
Great video! Thank you for posting! I was just going to go out to clip some mammoth basil to propagate when I saw this video notification! My first try at basil propagation failed but after watching this I am pretty sure I should have some new plants in a couple of weeks!
If you have never tried mammoth basil you don't know what you are missing! It tastes like Genovese but maybe just a touch sweeter. I grew it as a curiousity but now it is my favorite basil ever! The coolest part (other than the superb flavor) is that the leaves are the size of your open hand and the leaves grow much denser than on regular basil plants. The net result is that you could easily make an entire large batch of the tastiest pesto you have ever had and you won't even be able to tell that you collected any leaves off the plant! Far cry from stripping all the leaves off of all of your basil plants for one small batch of pesto! Plus it is fun to put one basil leaf on your burger in place of lettuce. :)
Thanks again for the great content!
Take care, be well and all the best from the San Francisco bay area 💛

I added a little liquid fertilizer to some tomato cuttings. (I use plastic salad dressing bottles instead of cups -- the narrow tops support the cuttings much better.)
Not only did they root very quickly -- they started growing like crazy. I'll have to transplant them ahead of schedule so that they're in soil when the first flowers appear.

Hi sir, I watched your video and is really good. I was wondering myself what mistake I have done to plant this basil. I bought from Home Depot a small basil plant and look so great. So I put it on my backyard outdoor and direct full sun maybe around 6 to 8 hours and I watered the plant everyday , but after a month later the plant started to die slowly. I tried number of times and the result are the same. Do you have any advice and what mistake I have done. Your response is appreciated and thank you very much.

Use a topo Chico bottle, deep watering for multiple leaf nodes and cool to watch them grow!

I love propagating basil! It's one of the easiest things to propagate. I ordered some African blue basil online when it got here it was very laggy and kind of pitiful because it went through the mail system in the highest heat of the year. I cut it in half It started propagating as soon as it got here. Even if it was in it's pitiful state and it's doing great now.
Tomatoes are definitely right up there too though.

Off subject, but thot to tell you I topped my Bell peppers as you showed, and fertilized with the Neptune Fish & Seaweed and WOW! An explosion of healthy and bushy growth. I'll restart my basil and use the fertilizer on them too, when they get big enuf. Thanx again, Brian.

I have found if I use the water out of my aquarium. They seem to put on roots a little quicker and they don't seem to wilt as much.

I could only find one tomato shoot suitable for a cutting but its performing very well, never wilted. Its probably too late in the season for it now but I’ll be doing it next season. Thanks for the tip Brian.

I am in the middle of doing this for the third year with tomatoes. I was unsure as to what to do when they start wilting, but this time I brought them indoors where it was cooler and stood them in front of a fan and within a very short time they were okay and standing tall. The sunlight was simply too much to cope with, especially with little to no breeze outside.

Excellent idea. I just do not understand why you do not use one of those larger plastic cups for growing thr rooted basil in (with a hole in the bottom). Wouldn't it be better for ther plants if the roots do not get twirled around?

my basil did great in containers outdoors this summer. I'm going to take some cuttings. Will these be ok in water thru the winter? Or do I have to plant them in pots indoors?

One thing people rarely seem to mention in propagating videos - what about sunlight? Indirect only? And do they then need any hardening off?

Thank you for this video. I have already been doing this for my basil. I hope to keep the next batch of basil inside my house. Cold temps start in late October so I am getiting ready! I will also try with spearmint and peppermint for tea during cold winter months.

What do you do to keep the insects from hatching? We transferred some pepper plants last year, cleaning off most of the garden soil from the roots and replacing it with potting soil, and still had little bichos hatching and flying around inside.

    • @jacquelineanthony881
      @jacquelineanthony881 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@groussac Try to sprinkle some cinnamon around the soil. That helps reduce the bichitos from hatching.

@@jacquelineanthony881 Thanks Jacqueline. I'll give it a try. The bichitos are resourceful and very determined, but perhaps the cinnamon will confuse them for a while...

Great info. Hope I can find some new basil branches that have never bloomed.
I did some tomato cuttings on larger branches. The ones I put in water rooted then I put them in soil and they are doing very well. The ones I put straight into potting soil died.

Joanie S I have a volunteer cherry tomato plant that’s doing amazing. I wanted to clone it and so I took a cut stem and did the same thing, put it in soil. It wilted immediately. I thought it was lost but put it in water to see if I could save it, from me, and it miraculously revived. By the time roots were ready for planting, about ten days, it already had flowers! My two year old loves cherry tomatoes so I’m hoping I don’t mess up again.

Do this at the end of your growing season then when they are happy in pots, overwinter them. This will get you an early start on next season.

@@zed1966 I accidentally planted twice the cherry tomatoes. LOL I thought I was planting 4 Money Makers and 4 cherry, but so far all I'm getting are cherry plants from those. 😄 I also planted 2 beefsteak that are thriving. My 2 Brandywines are struggling. I had to dispose of one, and while the other looks happy and healthy, no fruit from the blossoms, yet. 😢 I have made cuttings to try for more, though.

    • @AtlantaTerry

@@joanies6778 the trick with overwintering is limited watering and no fertilization. Since the plants are not growing rapidly and/or producing fruit, they don't need a lot of water. Some of my overwintered hot pepper plants are five years old. Here in Atlanta, they spend winter in an unheated garage near a line of windows. They sit off the cold floor on a small wood pallet the kind folks at Lowe's gave me. The plants stay outside unless the temperature is predicted to drop below 40*F, then they come inside until it warms up again.
