My Noni had a never ending supply of basil plants growing on her kitchen windowsill. The light was perfect. She made the best pasta sauce I have ever tasted and besides the tomatoes the next ingredient was lots of fresh basil. Yum! I’ve bought many basil plants from the super market , and lost them all. I’d actually given up and used dried basil instead, now I know what to do. Thank you, I love your tips.
And, if you wind up with more basil than you can use it freezes well. Pick leaves from the stems and put them in a good-quality ziplock freezer bag. Thaw out a handful as needed-if you want the leaves chopped, bash the frozen leaves in the bag, they will shatter into small pieces. Don’t freeze for more than a few months as the taste and scent will eventually fade.
Reporting back, my plants were so successful that I harvested about 6 cups of basil. Enough for 2 batches of pesto with extra to boot! Thanks again for this video. My basil plants started flowering and I didn’t know what to do, but I just followed your advice to cut the plant and let it regrow. Fingers crossed I didn’t wait too long 🤞🏻 Anyway, thanks again. I love basil and this video was the key for me. You’re the man! Cheers from across the pond.
That single pot from the store is enough to plant out a sizeable container garden, along with some cherry tomatoes, even without propagating. High value starter, for sure.
Your husband probably is the one who googled that. Google will use interests of people that share physical locations via gps or ip tracking. It’s actually scarier that they can target you without even having to listen to you… That’s AI for you.
As you mentioned, all the stems in the pot are individual plants. Just replant them 2/3 per pot, and you're golden. No need to propagate, wait for them to grow roots or anything. The plants are already adjusted to soil, in contrast to propagated plants. Break up the soil in the pot from the supermarket, clean off the old soil under running water and untangle the roots gently, replant, done! Although, propagating plants is fun though.
I always struggle to grow herbs outside where the sun’s too intense and humidity is around 10% during the summer (Colorado), but no more. I’m gonna bring them inside and give it a go! Wish me luck!
If you pinch off the topmost leaves, the cutting will put its energy into growing roots instead of getting taller... and then it will branch where you pinched it!
I've tried propagating basil without any success. I wasn't aware of where the stem had to be cut, nor that many leaves had to be removed. Thank you for this information!
You can also use an exacto knife or razor blade and peel a very thin layer of the stem at the very bottom and/or dip the stem in honey or a commercial rooting hormone and then place directly into a starter pot and a good potting soil mix. Once your new clones have taken hold you can use supercropping to make the plant grow bushier and produce more branches and leaves. That's when you pinch (or slice with a sterile blade or clippers) the top new leaf node on a branch, forcing the two lower side nodes to begin growing like their own new branches.

Read a book about Audrey Hepburn that gave the recipe for her favorite quick lunch. A fresh tomato, fresh basil and Parmesan blend over hot pasta. I usually never have fresh basil. Won't be a problem anymore!
Going to try growing a source of Royal Thai basil this year after finding seeds; will keep this in mind after they're plants to increase the amount we have. We've NEVER had supermarket purchased basil start wilting and dying before it got used up in cooking. But the containers it's sold in here look like they're about twice the size of what you're showing, maybe three times as much. They do have lots and lots of stems in them so I assume the roots are similarly packed. A thought: if the complaint is that the supermarket potted basil wilts/dies before you can use it all, and this shows root development and healthy leaves two weeks later... couldn't you also do this to extend the health of the shoots long enough to when you need them for your culinary endeavors? Thanks for the informative video!
in my experience, clear glass works better for propagation than coloured glass. For some reason the roots won't grow unless the stem gets the right amount, or kind of light. Also, my greenest and most vibrant basil last year was grown hydroponically, or at least using hydropinic liquid fertiliser with an NPK of roughly 4-0.5-3 (though I think it would be even better if the proportion of potassium were even lower still...) having lots of nitrogen keeps them from flowering or becoming too "woody", by then it also tastes bad. Let's Grow 🌱my dudes
You can also simply divide the plant into three or four parts and plant these in again into separate pots and they will grow perfectly because they have got space again.
My attempt to pot store lettuce and celery had this effect: the new shoots cannabalized the existing scrap but did not root. Lettuce in dirt thus died and I just "saved" (?) the celery and am trying to root it in water and some Aerogarden secret sauce to kill the mush around it (it's anti-fungal - not self-proclaimed but acts that way, trust me). But the basic growth is beautiful. I should have rooted it in water from the start. Did not. Onions don't care. But these did. Should have washed off the chemical inhibitors too. Will see. Bought a second small aero garden because I know that works especially for supergreens.
This is one way to do it. It's fun project. But I always just transplant the whole thing (all the planta) in bigger pot. We have so much basil it is impossible to use.

Or does propagating make a stronger root?
Sure you can do
Thanks for the super useful tutorial. I'm hoping the last basil plant that I bought is the last one for this year once I apply this technique. Any advice where I could buy the quality soil from online? I am based in the WA State in the US. Thanks!
I’m not sure which soil is good in the US tbh
Unlimited Basil would be a good band name. The Roots would be, too.
the grocery store here was selling already cut basil so I did what you did in the video, cut some leaves, put them in water in front of the window. but they quickly lost the last bit of life they had and withered. maybe it was too sunny for them? or were they already doomed? what can I do next time?
Might have been too long from cut to water
I live in an apartment that has windows and patio that faces the north so I get almost no Sun for any plants. Do you have a recommended grow light. I would really like to grow my own herbs
Sansi are good
@SheffieldMadePlants Thank You
This is a very helpful video thank you so much for making it. Can this also be done with parsley and coriander?😊
Not so much with them. Mint yes
Cheers brother. Very good video👍🏽🙏🏽
Much appreciated
Can i do this in tropical country?
Yep
Any tips for what to do if you are not home for days at a time?
Every time I have grown basil at home. If I need to go on a business trip for say, a week. I come back and half the basil is dead. So if I take two of those ni the span of a month, I essentially have no basil left.
Any idea on what to do ?
Self watering pot?
Need to try this!
thank you - your tips are awesome and empowering - what if you have mostly northern'ish light inside? thank you again
My pleasure 😊
Can you do the same with other supermarket herbs? Thanks for the info 😊
The larger leafed ones yes
Thank you 😉
I'm already subscribed, there's just so much information in the short videos making. thank you. John, Perth, Au'
Cheers buddy
Great how to video thanks ..
Cheers!
Thank you for this tip.
Do you know why it goes woody when planted in the garden?
Isn't that just age?
@@SheffieldMadePlants Possibly. I'll do some more cuttings and have another go at putting them outdoors when they are ready. Thank you for your reply to my comment.
Super video! Thank you for that! But...who are they? Why do they want that I fail at plant nursery?
