    I believe the asymmetric tapering of the blade is there so that the blade fits better with the awl on the other side of the same layer.

    I just discovered a new use for the saw blade...
    It works well to comb my moustache!! Just after a little trim it sweeps out loose hair....

    The Farmer X was released in May 2020, it wasn't a limited edition (at least not the standard silver one) and it's not discontinued, it's still manufactured and sold today.

      Hi, it was presented like that in my country + it was discontinued, but, you are right, you can still buy one. As I know, every Alox ed. here was sold or they got some limited amount in stock. Every year they released those Alox in different colors, this year, they are red as I know (I´m not in Vic. knives, this is my only one so I´m not sure). So, I believe, they won´t produce those silver if they have those red = they are possibly discontinued. But again, I´m not into Vic knives:-) FM

    I really like mine, actually does feather sticks pretty darn good! Awl beig on the end of the blade is great for boring holes into wood👍

    You plum ! The X in Farmer X stands for the scissors ✂️ 🥺

      :-)) You got me and you are right;-) I´m not a Victorinox knives nerd by any means so, to be honest, I didn´t care/check. I bought the knife because I like it:-) The "X" I explained to myself was "correct" (X= the big one out of the series, which it is:-)), so why not;-) ). That is what I like, I learn still more, and thank you for the correction;-) I added the original info to the knife description thanks to you:-) Have a great time. FM

    How sharp your Victorinox vs your Spyderco are, really depends on how you sharpen/strop them. How long they remain sharp, that's another story.
    Out-of-the box sharpness is one thing, but if you are using your knife, after a while it will go dull and you'll have to sharpen it anyway.
    The steel used by Victorinox is pretty soft and doesn't hold its edge for a long time, but it's very easy to sharpen and takes a good edge.
    I can sharpen my Vics not just to shaving but literally hair-whittling sharp. But that crazy sharpness doesn't last for too long.

    • @forestmantis1737
      @forestmantis1737  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, agree, you can watch my other knife videos, I use (and re/sharpened) many other knives. The Vic knife's steel is known not to be some super steel and it doesn´t hold an edge long time. FM

      @@forestmantis1737 I just wrote my comment because in the video you said something like "yeah, this knife is sharp, but my Spyderco is sharper". I just wanted to say that this doesn't say much about the reviewed knife itself, because my Farmer X might be sharper (at the moment) than your Spyderco (at the moment), or also your Farmer X might be sharper (at the moment) than my Spyderco (at the moment).
      But if we sharpen all with a similar method, they should be similarly sharp to start with - but how long they hold a good or usable edge, that would already say something about the knife.

      @@miklospinter Hi, what I also said - the knife came pretty sharp. I also rated its sharpness 4 stars out of five. Then I used the knife. So we can´t use words to describe real sharpness, or a song, or a painting, or...;-) We are just describing;-) Anyway, everything that I said in general about knives came from my knife experience, if you trust me here, and I say the knife is pretty sharp, it means, it is really sharp and of course, there can be even more sharp knife;-) Have a great time. "X" means it comes with scissors. The pioneer X, like the farmer X comes with scissors over its non X counterparts.

    Good indepth review! It's much stronger than the celidor (plastic) officer SAKs because as you pointed out the knife blade and openers are a bit thicker, secondly the alox scales are much thicker than the thin aluminium scales on the celidor models (the celidor outers don't add any strength and really are just for comfort and looks), thirdly the liners are made of nickel silver on this rather than aluminium on the celidor models so it can take more torque, and finally the rivets on this are thicker.
    I agree that I'd like to see them make on these with a file added as that would add very little thickness overall, but maybe it's better they don't as I already have this one and the Farmer without scissors, and I know I'd buy that one too! But that would be great carried with a Knipex Cobra XS to cover the pliers, you'd have the full toolset you find on a full size multitool in a smaller format but still with outstanding quality.

      @forestmantis1737  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thank you:-) I do like the Alox versions right because it seems to be tougher. I have to have a look at the Knipex you mentioned, I normally carry some Leatherman multi-tool, but I´d like to check more of these practical tools:-) Have a great time:-) FM

      That's what I was thinking about doing. What would be a good way to add wire cutters

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BassMaster.454 Yeah lol that's what's holding me back from buying the Cobra XS or even the next size up...cos no wire cutters. The only way to add a pair of wire cutters would be to add dedicated wire cutters or a pair of linesmen's pliers which kind of defeats the whole purpose as you end up carrying loads of tools and might as well have a tool belt lol. But some EDC channel uploaders here carry a Leatherman or other multitool plus the Cobra XS as it provides different capabilities to the multitool pliers. Like gripping large bolts, you can't really do that with a multitool (LM Crunch excepted). So for the time being I'll stick with carrying my Leatherman Bond plus a SAK for scissors, sometimes a small SAK with scissors (like the 74mm Ambassador) plus a dedicated folder like the Spyderco Urban, this is what I did today for example.

    To me it looks like your scissors spring is not the best. My Swiss army knife scissors seem to open up more with the help of the spring, without me manually opening it wider.
    I would try to clean and oil the pivot of the scissors, that might help.

    Interesting to see what angle you have used to strike the ferro rod with the awl. When I do that, I believe I hold the knife at almost a 90 degree angle. With my ferro rod, it throws good sparks that way.

      @@forestmantis1737 I don't use a ferro rod very often, but it's good that both tools work. Good to have multiple options, just in case you don't have a saw on your knife (e.g. Pioneer).

    If you’d like a file as well the small pliers as well as the scissors, saw and a non locking main blade, then take a look at the Victorinox handyman...
