SAKs are incredible. Never any blade wobble, walk and talk, edge bevels, overall fit and finish, etc. are always excellent and at such a low price. The common problems with slip joint knives are almost non-existent with Victorinox. People exaggerate edge retention, so they criticize Victorinox steel. But I cut cardboard all the time with my SAKs, and they do fine. Victorinox steel excels in all other categories: corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, chipping resistance, sharpness, etc.

I finally broke down and purchased my first SAK a couple of months ago despite being a life-long jack knife carrier and I’ve got to say I’ve developed such a genuine affection for Swiss Army Knives in general even though I own a couple of beautiful edc folders with premium steel that I also carry. If I had to choose to carry only one knife for the rest of my life I would definitely choose a SAK even over a far more expensive premium knife all day long! There is just something so romantic about these classic folders that is truly undeniable…at least as far as I’m concerned ❤️

I love the look and feel of Alox but will always carry the classic red scales. The scale tools have become a daily use for me. Like many, I’ve grinded out the extra slot in the plus scales, but also added a slot in the front scale, giving me room for 7 tools (pressurized pen, toothpick, small tweezers, large tweezers ground down to a fine pound for splinters and tick removal, the ferro-rod, and two magnetized pins) that I would be without when using the Alox. Aside from that, the classic red scales are very nostalgic for me. My grandfather would always carry a large Victorinox when I was little, and I remember him using it all the time, from fixing my bicycle to cutting open a snack wrapper.
Appreciate your EDC videos; I credit them to my switch from the Leatherman Wave to the Swiss champ, as well as my further appreciation of Victorinox in general. Cheers!

30-plus years of using Victorinox knives, and I only learned today that there is a distinct difference between the "93 mm" knives and the "91 mm knives", that the 93 mm range has more robust blades and tools. Now I'm considering getting one, but I can't decide quite which. In the past, I've used the Huntsman and SwissChamp in the 91 mm range, but never owned a 93 mm range Victorinox. The only Victorinox I carry on a daily basis now is the 58 mm Rambler, which is very possibly my favorite knife of all time and certainly my most-used knife.

  • @Deibodese
    @Deibodese 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Your dilemma is amusing to me, because I had a similar debate between the Farmer X and the Fieldmaster. My initial debate was on the fact that I wouldn’t need the Phillips head screwdriver since I intend to use the knife for various kinds of pruning tasks in the garden, but the thought kept creeping back in, “But what if you find out after the fact you really did need that screwdriver?” What finally settled the debate was the sewing eye on the awl/reamer. I don’t know leather-working yet, but I decided to teach myself and the sewing eye adds an important function in that craft.

In my honest opinion, the deluxe tinker is forgotten far too often.
It really has everything you need (if you don't need a saw because when you're not a bushcraft person) and is still very compact.
The deluxe tinker is always there and i have never missed any functionality in my everyday life.

@@allemander It all boils down to personal preference. I’ve found that I like the light weight and extra implements in the scales of the cellidor 91mm models- not to mention the extra tools on the back. Years and years of carrying pocketknives, and I’ve found that 2 layers is the most I carry in a SAK. The awl on the Pioneer 93mm range is second to none, but not enough to warrant the extra weight, bulk, and lack of functionality. If I were inclined to “go big”, I’d carry the Climber or Explorer over the Pioneer X. But again, this is just my preference. I appreciate the robust nature of the Alox models, but at the end of the day I feel they underdeliver when compared with their 91mm cellidor cousins.

Hey Jonathan, I've become a massive fan of yours, your videos are top notch material, very pleasant and relaxing to listen to! I've recently finally acted on my childhood fascination with SAKs and started sort of collecting them. The Alox series, while lacking in some of the tools, is just so appealing, I managed to get myself a Pioneer X in red, and it's just so nice. I've got my eyes set on a black Alox Cadet, but it's just so hard to get one. Also, I can't wait to replace my keychain Classic with Silver Alox MiniChamp. You also got me hooked on when it comes to the Compact. I've realised I can only fit a two-layer SAK for pocket carrying (as a female in close-fitting jeans anything thicker becomes very noticeable). The Compact seems like the best option for me to combine with my keychain multitool. The only thing I wasn't able to get is the pocket clip.

Very thorough, detailed, unbiased comparison. Thank you for sharing and I also wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for turning me onto the Compact model overall not long ago in the first place. It wasn’t on my radar initially but it’s a beautiful little edc on those days I might not want to carry my slightly bigger, heavier and bulkier Huntsman and/or Handyman. I’m now considering purchasing one to have available to slip into the pocket of a pair of shorts on those days when it’s uncomfortably hot and do so without unwillingly sacrificing my edc. That’s not going to happen.

  • @jamesh1707
    @jamesh1707 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I'm in complete agreement with this video. I've owned both for several years (and lots of other expensive pocket knives). Yes, my PioneerX is unquestionably the better built, higher quality, more luxurious knife, but I find that I just can't give up that pragmatic Compact toolset. From the pin (for ejecting your celphone sim tray) to the glasses tool (summertime sunglasses arm tightening) to the little pen (signing random receipts) it's just such a thoughtful everyday urban/suburban workhorse. If you own one and brush aside all pretention, in the long one it will be the one that wins the war of attrition for your pocket. At least for me.
I just wish victoranox tools came in higher quality steel because damn, I'm sick of the frequent re-sharpening.

I have a No 7 Alox in silver. In fact, I have two. Brilliant knives. Lovely, thick blade stock and smooth, positive action. The saw, and in particular the hawksbill blade (a highly underrated blade), get the most use. I wish that the saw had a liner lock, but as an EDC option, little comes close.

I EDC a Hiker. Has all the tools I need and the "normal" style phillips screwdriver works for me. It compliments the Leatherman Wingman I wear on my belt nicely. I'm a building maintenance tech and these two tools have saved me countless trips to my truck when noticing the loose doorknob or lock set. I use the leathermans blade as a "beater" blade for things like scraping glue, saving the hikers blades for cutting chores. Just a winning combination.

I have spent a lifetime wearing a tool pouch or pocket carrying tools for work so both these options are light carry to me. I prefer a point on my tweezers so I carry a Sliver Gripper on my key ring. I never considered the toothpick any more sanitary than carving my own toothpick from a twig. The Compact is a great “don’t know it’s there” carry for those inconveniences that come up. I personally prefer the Farmer X Alox since I find need for the saw and having the awl on the end of the knife rather than centred on the handle. The only bad thing I have to say about the Compact is that it is so light that I forget I’m carrying it until I’m halfway to the toolbox. This was a very good presentation of both knives.

I mentioned this earlier but to remind you of the ask - what is the best complimentary two knives to have, with least overlap, e.g. the Alox 7 (aka Harvester) and the Manager, combined you get short and long blade, small scissors, pen, twezzers or tooth pick or short ferrorod, small phillips, large flat, small file, wood saw, awl. I like how the combo tool slims down the Compact to 2 layers, but I find it inferior in functionality, to the standard opener/driver set, especially for Phillips screws. At a little over half the Compact's price (less if you compare used ones), the Hiker is a better value in my opinion. It has pretty much the same tools as the Compact but with the standard opener set and the awl on the back, and it's only a little over a half ounce heavier and one scale width wider. There is no pen or file on the backside of the hook, but Victorinox could include those just as easily on the Hiker.

Add to the phillips and awl a built-in deep carry clip and--most importantly--a locking main blade (the latter-most of which was why the Wenger Evolution line was so intriguing), and you'd arguably have the edc pinnacle of what Victorinox had to offer in terms of weight vs functionality.

I will say the awl is one of the tools I use the most frequently. I wish the Compact had an awl in lieu of the corkscrew (I do like the corkscrew, very handy at times.). I use the in-line awl to open boxes, packages, etc...and preserve the edge of the blade from tape residue or dulling. If I don't have my mug with me and get a beverage in a 'go cup' with a plastic lid, I'll use the awl to open a little vent hole in the lid. I've done this too many times to count. I was in an airport with a plastic lid on a coffee cup and reflexively reached for my SAK with its handy awl to improve the vent hole.....oooops.... *** sigh ***... air travel today.......

In 1976 while in US Army helicopter pilot training my only request for a Christmas present was a Swiss Army knife with a knife blade, a reguar screw driver and a Philips head screw driver. for 22 years it was my carry knife in my flight suit and was used to keep my helicopter flyable for opening and closing panels, setting screw that had come undone. The helicopter I flew had more standard slotted screws than Philips head. If the Pioneer X had been available at the time it would have been my choice due to the beefy nature of the components and size. The Air Force issued me a switch blade used to cut parachute cords one handed if I was dangling in a parachute. Something we didn't use in helicopters. but the utility of my Tinker swiss army knife served me well and still does as my EDC knife. However, now as I am getting older, no longer flying my needs have changed, and fortunately Victorinox has many new options.

I use a victorinox bantam alox and a Classic sd alox in my wallet so I don't forget them when I leave the house, they have all the functions of the Pioneer x, except the punch which I rarely use, but they are only 6 mm thick which makes them makes it highly portable. Almost no one uses a pen outside of work these days. The hook has more use than the pen nowadays.

  • @astaschak

Victorinox are just absolutely great. The compact is my most carried and favorite model. Lately I've been enjoying having an Alox Electrician with me. It's a Pioneer but has an electricians blade instead of the can opener. The electricians sheepfoot blade is really good too. I prefer the heavier duty Alox tools also. I have yet to get a Pioneer X but I do carry my regular Pioneer quite a bit. The Cadet is another wonderful tool as well. Very small slim and light. I don't typically miss the scale tools as I keep a classic on my keyring which is either in my pocket or nearby if I'm out of the house. Now if they made an alox Compact or basically something like a Pioneer X with a combo tool instead of a separate opener layer. Angle the combo opener so that it fits with the scissors and keep the main blade an awl and it might be able to stay as a 2 layer tool then. Until then I'll just have to buy more sak's until I have them all I suppose.

Perfect comparison. I have almost bought the Pioneer X now multiple times. I love the Alox series - how it looks, how it feels, how sturdy it is. But I always argue myself out of it because of the missing functionality, and in the end it comes down to the tweezers. I would accept missing out on anything else, but tweezers are actually one of the most used tools for me. I now mostly carry a Super Tinker or an Explorer, the latter in a belt pouch together with a Bullet Pen.

@@mrsentencename7334 By now I actually do have a Pioneer X in my daily rotation (gorgeous in a dark green); the tweezer problem is solved by a Victorinox Manager on my key ring.

Rationally, you are probably right with choosing the Compact.
But because of the look, sturdy tools and the reamer, I really love 93 mm Alox, especially colored ones... So my heart chooses the Pioneer-range, and I don't care what my brain says :D

The orange colour on the 2021 Pioneer X is really attractive. It looks much better in person than it does in photos.
I can't wait to see what colour they choose for the 2022 run.

Fantastic reviews Jon. I wasn’t that keen on this model, but watching your review has made me think again. I really wish that they offered it in assorted colours. The limited edition is considerably more expensive than the standard silver. I can’t justify the premium price just for the colour though. Looks like I will get the silver.😀

You can paint the silver whatever color you like. Search for "how to paint victorinox alox".

Great review! I can see why you chose the Compact over the Pioneer X. I love most of the Alox SAKs and my EDC is the Farmer X which adds a saw blade. I'm an avid outdoors person, hiker and camper and I prefer the more robust Alox versions of SAKs for outdoor use. I would not carry the Pioneer X or Farmer X in my front pocket because that is just too much. But I almost always wear cargo pants so my larger Farmer X rides unnoticed in a side pocket. The saw is a real bonus for woods use as is the awl. I have tweezers on my keychain and carry a pen in my vest which is EDC for me.

I wish they made the compact with alox scales, just give me the excellent scissors, knife and multi bottle/can opener.
But I got myself the Pioneer X a few weeks ago and have to say I'm super happy with it, been useful already in many little ways, also the half stop of the bottle opener on the Pioneer is a nice fidget device I discovered (clicking between full open and half stop).

Replaced my modded compact with philips now, I built a cadet with a wenger scissor layer. Smaller and thinner than a compact with a complete set of tools.

I have been collecting the yearly Limited edition Pioneers for a few years and was pleased this year they changed it to a Pioneer X. The scissors are in a fact a joy! Will be getting SAKs with the scissors hopefully from now on.
