i know this is an old video but it's a great reaview and i really love my locksmith. out here in the states almost nobody knows or talks about it. everyone raves about the one handed trekker which have gotten so expensive now with everyone trying to get a straight edge model. there's almost no english reviews of the one handed locksmith on youtube but it's almost exactly the same. it's a lot more chunky with that file which makes it more difficult to EDC but in terms of versatility i think it's brilliant. thank you for making an awesome video showcasing the capability of this tool I go fishing on the coast a lot and do a bit of farming on the property so my leatherman skeletool gets a lot more love because of the pliers and bit kit but i try breaking out my locksmith every chance i get. some people modify the flat head by making it a spoon gouge and sharpen the can opener in to a sort of circle knife, tools to help in spoon carving which i love to do. it's tempting because i think that would be fun but i don't think i want to compromise my tools that much. i may just end up getting another locksmith to try more mods with, or just shell out the money for a carvin jack
I know what you mean about doing the modifications, I bought a Leatherman surge with the intention of modifying the hell out of it but I still haven't done it 18 months later.

Hi Rob, super video for the best EDC SAK! As Locksmith has been discontinued a year ago, I found myself extremely lucky that I got the last new piece (in the world?) available at Victorinox Factory shop in Ibach, here in Switzerland.
Nice video again Rob, my dad got me a swiss army knife when I was about 10 , so well over 50 years ago now, I have cut my toenails with the scissors since then, done loads of little jobs with it, and to be honest if I was in a survival situation its the only knife I would have access to, as you cant walk around with a mora garberg in ya pocket in England, and if you have a planned trip you would take many different saws and blades with you ,so great bit of legal kit, loved the tin can kettle thankyou sir
If you have good enough tinder, the Firefly can be your primary source of fire. I see nothing wrong with it. It requires some practice, but it can be done. It's actually a good idea to become proficient with it if you really choose to use the Firefly as emergency aid. If someone tries to use the Firefly for the first time when they're in danger, they're absolutely screwed.
A coupla those small Vaseline tins with cotton wool/vas are invaluable for catching small sparks and burning well to start your tinder. I know you know it but so much less fuss and cheaper than firecord. Great vid.
Great video Rob, the locksmith is amongst my favourite SAKs, with the outrider, ranger and huntsman and compact, I got the walker after watching your video and also impressed. I never leave home without one. The locksmith is the main one I use whilst doing any army work and a great tool for any job. Keep up the great work.
I love my Forester and One-Hand Trekker! Looks like I need a Locksmith now. I use PSKOOK constantly, specifically for the waxed jute. I've made use of the fire cord and fishing line for several occasions - I wouldn't trust my life with it for the cordage's load bearing capabilities, but the strands that are in it work wonderfully for their purpose.
Really nice review, I'm glad you like the tool, I'm waiting for some custom made micarta scales I recently ordered,a great tool need some nice scales indeed, great tool great review, looking forward to some modifications you're gonna make to it Rob, cheers.

Love to see more crafting and how to projects; yes may have been done a million times by others but everybody does stuff a little different depending of tools/materials used, or just different because they were taught that way. Not better or worse, just different so your take on how to do stuff would always be worth a watch. How about a couple of different 'try sticks'? A simple version with basic cuts and notches to the full on Mors style, with a explanation of how they're used.
The bottom of the file (hacksaw section) throws a wicked spark off a firesteel, and won't close on your fingers. Sure someone has already mentioned this though. Anyway, the file is such a good addition to this 111mm SAK.

Lovely video. If you're going to do this again you might want to burn out the plastic liner from the inside of the can which although largely invisible and flavourless will under heat liberate undesirable substances into your spruce needle tea.
Your video has just prompted me to have a shifty at my SAK Champ, as I've not got round to it since arriving in Mud Island! It has been sitting in a container for 14 months and survived a trip by sea from the Colony! Upon inspection, it appears that some damage has occurred. Some of the fine, delicate linings of the sheath have started to disintegrate, either from age, or just atmospheric conditions, or both. Cut all that away, and no harm done. The mini-Maglite looks a bit squiffy, but I even managed to get a little light out of that old Duracel battery that has been in there for a decade, or more! Some of the safety pins were so rusted I turfed them. The lining had attached to the little sharpening stone, so I had to cut it free. I'll replace all the plasters as a matter of course. The pen is a write-off (but was quite junk to begin with. I think I'll whittle down a pencil to fit and get a better deal.) So, with anew battery, we're up and running again. Thanks for the nudge! (As you can see, I've modified the sheath quite a bit ).

Remember launching a canoe as the Rangers screamed water was too high and they were closing the river. One other canoe was ahead of us. They went less than 20 yards, wrapped the canoe around a tree which bent the canoe into a horseshoe. We paddled on, luckily with no incidents or dunkings, but we both had extensive severe whitewater experience. Cheers
Great review and demo of the SAK multitool. They are great bits of kit and versatile. Loved the tongs. Bushcraft project suggestions that I think would fit in with your channel would be tripods, pot hangers, seats/stools and campcraft tools made using different knives etc. Just a thought and keep up the good work.

Hi Rob☺ as always excellent video, that looks a good knife, whith a useful selection of tool's, if they made one whith everything we realy wanted on board it probably wouldn't fit in a pocket lol, its always a compromise I guess, and personal choice, my self I'd like the same size knife whith Alox handles , can't see it happening, but you never know with SAK !.Realy fast boil whith the pop can, and the hook and spinner was an added bonus, if you use it do tell what happens, it's a shame about your canoe trip, but you did get some ME time in after all, cheers mate, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart.uk.
The Outrider is the single best ONE STOP tool as sooner or later you will need scissors, one hand opening gets in the way with long use, and a long Phillips handy in cities is useful out bush as a long poker and for making holes deeper and longer - when coring wood can come from 2 ends and make tubes.

Regarding cords, apparently: paracord = just white nylon strings survival cord = paracord + additional strings for various purposes (copper for snares, transparent nylon for fishing, etc), depending on the model Don't know if that could be called "definition" but seams like a good explanation.
I love big knives and I always find ways to convince myself I need a new one.I just bought the Svord Von Tempsky as I told myself it would be invaluable in the woods and all my other big knives would now be useless.Truth is I can do 99% of what I need to do with my Victorinox Alox Electrician .Great video as always.For some reason saying shit in a welsh accent cracks me up every time. I'm pretty sure my new Bowie won't be up to snuff now and I probably need the Locksmith.

I'm looking for a new knife for bushwalking here in Aus, and it's hard to find good real world info that doesn't seem to focus on fighting off a zombie apocalypse or something. Awesome looking knife Rob,have you seen their ranger grip 57 an 79 version, push the cross symbol to unlock to close the blade,an it has a nice full cutting edge, plain edge or or partial serrated, then a nice saw an gut cutting blade an some decent tools as well as the hunters orange version. Each cost a little more.

I like 91mm SAKs and my old go to knife is the Victorinox Champion with chisel that I bought back in 1994 and my 4 year old Swiss Champ. The Champ has the pliers, hook and a flat head screwdriver over the champion, and the magnifying glass is better, plus the pen. I modified the scale piece next to the cork screw on the Champion to hold a pin and sewing needle years ago. I like the look of the Locksmith but I'd really like to have scissors in it as well. I will keep it in mind for the larger style SAK for later down the track.
Totally agree with the scissors. I'd say to replace the can and bottle openers with the muilti tool can/bottle opener , freeing up an extra space for a scissors.

Hi Rob, last Saturday (11 Sep 2021) I bought a spare Swiss champ and a 111mm Work Champ Swiss Army Knife - ouch! The Work Champ knife has a two handed opening blade, scissors and pliers and folded up underneath them are two phillips head screw drivers. The screw drivers have an extra lever to get them out after you open up the scissors/pliers. Under the scissors is a long and skinny #1 phillips head and under the pliers is a short #2 phillips head. The rest of the tools are the same as the Locksmith but on the back it has the cork screw with eyeglasses screw driver and the awl. I like this SAK, I am happy I bought it. Keep the videos coming.

I was expecting you to polish the base of the can, to make a parabolic mirror to start a fire by concentrating the suns rays onto a fine tinder. Another good video Rob. Why don't Victorinox put a sewing eye on all their awls ? Keep up the good work.
Hey, Rob. I have always liked victorinox tools, especially with the one hand opening liner lock blades. Seems like a good tool. But for the fishing hooks, I would not be trying to file down the soda can tabs or beating on nails. I prefer simple fire hardened gorge hooks. I have some issues with using aluminum soda cans or tin cans as cooking device. Inside coating of those cans is not very good for you when heated. Better if you burn that off. Well, you do what you have to when you have to, right? I have a request Rob. Victorinox came out with full tang fixed blade some time ago and saw some first impression videos on Shot Show and other places. But I cannot get my hands on one at where I live. If they came out with the production version of it and you could get your hands on one, could kindly do a review? I'd love to see your take on that knife. Go Evans!
I was only showing what the file can do and I know what you mean about the cans , it was a one time boil and an emergency technique. As for the fixed blade Victorinox knife I've been told that they are shit, leave it alone.

I stand corrected. The locksmith has the file but a Phillips screwdriver vs corkscrew. For me, the Locksmith would be better with a corkscrew then I could have the mini screwdriver and some helix starter
@@RobEvansWoodsman locksmith you have big saw and file But easy to edc the width is ok bigger than that in 111mm I don’t like Knipex 150 cobra pliers Manager scissors extra philips pen I think that’s a nice combo Spirit multytool plus waiter I repeat locksmith knipex cobra manager on the keys chain or explorer this is nice too but I prefer the first Handyman is good too But for me the best combo is the first one
I really like the saw and file on the Locksmith, but I regard screwdriver 'blades' on a folding knife to be a waste of space. They never work very well and I would far rather the places used for more useful tools, such as extra cutting blades. Do I use screwdrivers? Well, of course I do! But there are SO many excellent compact screwdrivers/bit holders out there and they work SO much better than the screwdrivers on folding pocket knives. If you haven't discovered the 1,001 ways of removing a crown bottle top with everday items, easily available within an arm's reach (not including teeth), you really shouldn't be allowed out on your own! Who needs a can opener these days? Most now are ring pull! If you REALLY need a can opener, carry one of those excellent little things they used to include in army ration packs. They still sell them and they cost bugger all. Far better than taking up valuable space on your expensive Swiss Army knife!
Spot on Tony, I completely agree. I think the muilti purpose bottle/can lifter on the walker is adequate as an emergency tool and would free up space for an extra small blade for carving duties.

Lure might work but I think the the hook wouldn't.

I thought about the parabolic lens but I've never managed to get it to work, I don't think the sun here gets hot enough.
Hey, Rob. I have always liked victorinox tools, especially with the one hand opening liner lock blades. Seems like a good tool. But for the fishing hooks, I would not be trying to file down the soda can tabs or beating on nails. I prefer simple fire hardened gorge hooks. I have some issues with using aluminum soda cans or tin cans as cooking device. Inside coating of those cans is not very good for you when heated. Better if you burn that off. Well, you do what you have to when you have to, right? I have a request Rob. Victorinox came out with full tang fixed blade some time ago and saw some first impression videos on Shot Show and other places. But I cannot get my hands on one at where I live. If they came out with the production version of it and you could get your hands on one, could kindly do a review? I'd love to see your take on that knife. Go Evans!
I was only showing what the file can do and I know what you mean about the cans , it was a one time boil and an emergency technique.
As for the fixed blade Victorinox knife I've been told that they are shit, leave it alone.

The can boiling was just to show a survival technique , I wouldn't use that on a regular basis.

Normal paracord won't light with sparks , survival cord has red sisal waxed thread running down the middle.

I stand corrected. The locksmith has the file but a Phillips screwdriver vs corkscrew. For me, the Locksmith would be better with a corkscrew then I could have the mini screwdriver and some helix starter

I try to cut them so it's not boring to watch but sometimes it doesn't work out!
I really like the saw and file on the Locksmith, but I regard screwdriver 'blades' on a folding knife to be a waste of space. They never work very well and I would far rather the places used for more useful tools, such as extra cutting blades. Do I use screwdrivers? Well, of course I do! But there are SO many excellent compact screwdrivers/bit holders out there and they work SO much better than the screwdrivers on folding pocket knives. If you haven't discovered the 1,001 ways of removing a crown bottle top with everday items, easily available within an arm's reach (not including teeth), you really shouldn't be allowed out on your own! Who needs a can opener these days? Most now are ring pull! If you REALLY need a can opener, carry one of those excellent little things they used to include in army ration packs. They still sell them and they cost bugger all. Far better than taking up valuable space on your expensive Swiss Army knife!
Spot on Tony, I completely agree.
I think the muilti purpose bottle/can lifter on the walker is adequate as an emergency tool and would free up space for an extra small blade for carving duties.
