    Thank you for the follow up!!! My Barrina grow lights fried my minis and semi minis. I hung two per shelf and didn’t catch the changes quickly. What a setback. It’s great to see that they can work well if the distance is correct. LED light technology today is really designed for marijuana growers who represent a large market. They need intense light for marijuana buds. I overlooked the Amazon review where a customer foretold that these Barrinas would be too intense for African violets, but on further inspection, the warning was there. Imagine how useful these lights would be if designed with a dimmer switch!!! Thanks so much for your video. I love learning from you.

    I have a request for videos down the road. How about a series on hybridizers, with videos of their plants from your collection? “Meet the Hybridizers” could include those from the past who made significant contributions, those on a roll today, and newbies making their mark. It would be so nice to see actual video of their varieties. Many of the popular hybridizers today have a specialty, such as color or leaf type, which would be helpful information. Our favorite varieties hybridized long ago might have similar varieties by the same hybridizer, and so an attached list would be a great resource. For example, I love my trailer Cirelda” and would like to know more about Pat Tracey and her other trailers. I realize this information could be ferreted out online, but you are a great storyteller and videos make it so enjoyable. :)

    I have many African Violets by a south-west facing window. I have window foil on the glass to make the light less intense. That has worked other years for a mix of other house plants. But the light turned out to be too intense for the African Violets... 😢 So today I removed some burned leaves. 😢 And I also mounted blinds in the window, so now I just have to remember to use them on sunny days... It will be interesting to see how fast the African Violets improve !

    Thanks! I’ve been growing my violets using the wide spectrum LED’S from the Botanical LED’s website & I cannot get them to bloom! I moved them further from the crowns of the plants cause they’re getting too much light. So, i moved the fixtures to 9” from the crown of the plant & the lights are on for only 8 hours a day & now no blooms! This is frustrating cause i used to grow them over 40 years ago with no problem. Thats when there were in my basement light Flora Cart using T12 Fluorescent one cool white & one warm white! Now, I cant grow then using the wide spectrum lights! Any ideas would help immensely- Thanks so much!! Oh, the manufacturer of those LED’s gave me that info on the spacing & time under the lights

    • @grayturtleviolets

      I would start by measuring the light intensity first - the lights may have proper light color temperature, but their light intensity might be too low for African Violets to bloom. What is your opinion on clip on grow lights? Are they strong enough for African Violets? I only have 2 plants in a garden window that is situated under a deck. I only get direct sunlight just as the the sun is coming up in the morning. The rest of the time there is only a small amount of indirect light. My violets are rather spindly and the flowers are few and far in-between. I'm hoping to be able to buy something to help my plants become more robust. I recently cut the crown from the root, removed the blooms, scraped the stem and planted it in 50/50 peat and perlite. I placed the pot into a large plastic bag and so far, after 2 weeks, it is doing well. I've been growing A.V. on and off for many years but I never knew that you could cut off the lengthy stem and replant. I learnt how to make new plants from leaf cuttings from my mother but I have learnt so much more from watching your chanel on how to care for these lovely violets. My violets are just what I purchased from the local shops here in California, nothing too special but beautiful just the same.

      Glad it’s been helpful, happy to share my growing journey with fellow enthusiasts! I haven’t used clip on grow lights myself. With the lights I’ve used it’s been a matter of observation, to see how plants react, and then adjust as needed. I do use two different kinds of full spectrum grow lights. First, I placed them too close, once I adjusted the distance as discussed in this video, they have been doing great!

  • @charocflores
    @charocflores 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Thanks so much for this update. 8 months ago you showed quite a number of violets with a tight crown. Did they fix on their own with this new setting? or you had to replant them. If so, would you make a video on how to fix the tight crown? I had this issue and put those under natural light . Other are still under the light , but at a further distance as you did. None are doing better and the tight crowns persist. Do I need to replant them? Thanks so much in advance!

    • @grayturtleviolets
      @grayturtleviolets  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Excess light being one of several possible causes of tight crowns, if they don't get better after adjusting the light settings, my next guess would be to check for nutrient deficiency and micronutrient toxicity. I talk about it in this video: th-cam.com/video/YbAROKrhDW0/w-d-xo.html. If tight crowns are caused by nutrient imbalance, I usually propagate the healthiest looking leaves and toss the main plant, if the damage to the crown center is too severe to rectify on its own. Other possible causes for tight centers include mite infestations, low growing temperatures below 60 degrees F, etc.

    • @charocflores
      @charocflores 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@grayturtleviolets This comment was 3 weeks ago and by now I am happy to report most of the ones that had tight crown are getting better. Others never had tight crown and still fine. Meaning it wasn't the nutrients. But I lifted the lights more and only give 9 to10 hrs. of artificial light now. Thanks so much for your help. I did what you showed on your video of lights. It helped. 🙂

    Love your videos! I am a newbee to the hobby of raising AV! How much Lux do you recommend at 15" away from Brrina light source using the app Lux?

    • @grayturtleviolets
      @grayturtleviolets  ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to the hobby! The app renders various results, at 12 inches distance, immediately under the light: from 300-800 lux, so I would imagine it would do the same at 15 inches away from the light, except it might render lower lux parameters. Also not sure how accurate the Lux LightMeter app is. I am not a pro, just guessing the lux variation at the same distance might be caused by different strength in individual led elements. To add to the challenge, it measures different lux at various spots on the shelf located not immediately under the light. I started using Barrina full spectrum 3 years into the hobby, and based on my own challenges with this light type, I would not recommend it to a new grower. Here are the regular LED setups that worked for me best: th-cam.com/video/axTu2oq2Uy4/w-d-xo.html. Happy growing!

    • @rayscroggs4487

      Appreciate your advice about using a different light setup but I have already purchased the Barrina lights and shelving unit.
      I get various readings, in different locations, using the app as well. I was using the app wrong to begin with. I had the camera of the phone pointing downward towards the shelf so I could see the screen on my phone. The correct way is to have the camera lens pointed up at the light. I rest my phone face down on a box 12” away from the light. Then I do a screenshot and look at the picture to get the lux reading. Directly under the light the average reading is about 20,000 lux. Approximately 6” to either side away from center I get an average of 4,000 lux. This is just one light bulb. I removed one light from each shelf like you recommended in your video using the Barrina full spectrum lights with stand.
      Perhaps the lux app isn’t accurate and the true lux readings would be much different. I believe 10,000 lux is what they recommend for African violets.
      How much light is too much? Perhaps just one Barrina full spectrum light is too much light for some African Violets?
      You have beautiful plants and obviously have the right amount of light in the right spectrum. You say your not an expert but your African violets are saying you are!

    Before you started using the Barrina lights were you using regular fluorescent lights for your violets? How do you compare the grow lights to the regular fluorescent lights? The grow lights are very expensive. Is the additional cost worth it in the way the plants respond?

    • @grayturtleviolets
      @grayturtleviolets  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I started my new AV collection back in 2019, I inherited a vintage plant stand, shown in My African Violets Setup - Stands and Lights video, with fluorescent light fixtures. I checked out the fluorescent vs. LED lights comparison when I got it, and was able to find the LED light bulbs compatible with the vintage stand's fluorescent light fixtures. The reason I went for the LED vs. fluorescent was purely economical, as LED lights are known to be up to 80% more efficient, and last much longer than the fluorescent light bulbs - so later, I opted to go for LED fixtures when purchasing lights for my other stands/shelving units, as well. As far as their effects on my plants - my knowledge is purely empirical here, from what I can tell, each variety responds differently. Some grow well under regular LED 5000K shop light, others prefer full-spectrum LED grow light, and others prefer natural light, especially the Optimara and the vintage varieties.
