Over 50 years ago dad had an African violet collection and he didn't want anyone to mess with it, he took care of them and they were gorgeous. Once we moved to US he never picked up that hobby again 😮‍💨, I miss him. I will have to get a collection to remind me of him ❤ Blessings 🙏🏻💞

My great-grandmother had glass shelves lined with African violets mounted in front of her dining room windows. Absolutely stunning display. She passed away in 1974, and my mind can still picture her beautiful flowers. Thank you bringing to mind a precious memory from my early years.

My grandmother did the same, glass shelving in her dining room windows for her violets in NJ. I remember my grandfather building them for her. I struggle with them so much here in Southeast FL. Cannot get the lighting right and don't really want to use grow lights. My 85 year aunt has off springs of granny's violets and also her Christmas cactus.

Oh my goodness! My sister has my great-grandmother’s Christmas cactus. What a coincidence! We estimate the cactus is about 75 years old or so. I have a cutting from it and so do many cousins as my sister and my mother before her are very generous to share. I love knowing other families keep gardening traditions alive through the generations. Thank you for sharing 😊

My grandmother gave me my first African violet pot when I was 12, and now, 50+ years later, I still have at least 8 plants growing on my patio! I love propagating them and giving the plants as gifts to friends and family. Thanks, Laura, for reviewing repotting and showcasing such a special plant!

Dear Laura, I have been watching your videos for the last three years every day. I am currently working to complete my doctorate of educational leadership, and your videos have been a calm respite in all of my readings about how much teachers know about phonics and how effective they feel as teachers. I want you to know that this video was perfect for me, as I finished the last chapter of my dissertation and submitted it last night. I went to my local grocery store and bought a new African Violet to celebrate. It has purple flowers and a white throat. This video today could not have been more perfect. Thank you for all you do every day, Best wishes to you and your family-- Love, Jess

What a sweet memory for me. My mom always had beautiful African Violets in the kitchen. She would dissolves an aspirin in the water she used to give them a drink, which makes me wonder if they prefer an acidic soil? At any rate, you’ve inspired me to try my hand at growing some. Thank you for the clear and thorough lesson in growing African Violets.

Slightly acidic...too acidic and they won't bloom because the roots can't pull in the nutrients in the soil...stunts them.

🌸Good day Laura and Friends. I am so thankful for this demo on violets! My grandmother always had one on the chest in the living room, and was always giving me a cutting, but I always killed it!! Now in my apartment, I’ve learned thru the ages how to keep them, collect them, and love them just like my Grandma wanted! I’m in an apartment so they are perfect for me. If one dies, I propagate or buy another. Enjoy a beautiful day everyone, 💜🌞

I’m a big African Violet fan. They’re such a low maintenance plant if you meet their basic needs. I picked up a tiny one at my garden center last summer that had been neglected and was really struggling. The garden center discounted the price because of its condition. I came home, repotted it and gave it a little talc. Today it’s a glorious plant and makes me smile every time I look at it.

For some reason same here…first the blooms go and then the rest of the plant. I don’t know what I am doing wrong but I keep killing mine for some reason…I feel like they are more fussy than other house plants. I hope I am wrong and it’s something simple that I need to do differently.

They can go a long time between repotting. Like Laura said, as long as they have healthy looking leaves, no need to repot. Even if they take a break from blooming once in a while.

Hello …. Love from Australia! So funny when listening to you about where to place the pots to avoid the direct suns rays ! Here in the southern hemisphere it’s different … here in winter our sun rises in the north east and sets in the north west and in summer it’s more directly east to west … our south facing windows rarely get direct sunlight. You have clarified quite a few care issues I’ve had …. So I’m hoping for even greater success with my violets …. One of my all time favourite flowers!!!!

That’s a wonderful idea! When we had to move my mom to assisted living several years ago, it really helped that we made sure she had plants to care for in her room. I eventually had to switch most out for faux plants because she couldn’t remember if she had watered and would water again and again, and the poor things couldn’t take it. But, before two massive strokes, she had the loveliest and healthiest plant collection. I know I get my love of plants from her and my Mamaw, both of whom taught me about them growing up. 🥰

Here in Finland, the flower/plant in question is called Saintpaulia, the name comes from Saint Paul according to legend, more than 100 years ago, a German baron found saintpaulia in the forest and sent seedlings home to Germany. Since then, the saintpaulia has been one of the most popular flowering houseplants in Europe.

My mom always had a beautiful African violet in a chrystal bowl in the window of her living room (on a little table between two chairs). I've followed her example and always have one somewhere in my house. The little chrystal bowls can be found quite inexpensively at Marshalls and Home Goods, and we line the bowl with the reindeer moss and just sit the pot right down in it, hiding the sides. SO easy.

I have only five violets at present, space is an issue. I never pot them in terra cotta (unless glazed) because I've have many bottom leaves die off from the course texture of the pots. For me, the plants are very temperamental about their pots. Side note: my grandma used sheep droppings soaked in water for plant food and she was such a successful violet mom🥰

Your comment reminded me of my Mamaw collecting droppings from my pet rabbit to make “tea” for her plants. Back then, I probably thought she was a little loony, but thankfully her wisdom stuck in my mind. I have so many plants these days that I’m going to have to build an addition if I keep propagating and purchasing “rescues”. 😁

Oh, I love it!!! I feel it's my duty to rescue African violets. Can't stand to see them dried up and dying on store tables. As to space, my grandma had a stand, shaped sort of like a Christmas tree, but 5 shelves that could spin, largest at the bottom and progressively getting smaller until it topped off with a stationary one that held only one violet. It's kinda hard to describe, but it was so neat. My brother has it~wish I did tho, alas. @@jodilea144

Mom grew them. I used to help her water them. She used butter bowls, yarn, and the bottoms of the 2 liter soda bottles (they used to have black covers on the bottoms that worked perfectly for passing the yarn through. she would fill the bowls with that food and put the plant potted in the black recycled container with the yarn hanging out of the holes in that black container. This yarn was what fed the water to the plant as it needed it. I don’t know why she stopped growing them. But I enjoyed opening those butter bowls and pouring the water with the fertilizer. A great memory we share.

❤Thank you for all the teaching you do!!❤ FYI, I’ve had two African violets that have lived on the edge of my garden tub/shower for about twenty years. They get wet daily from the shower and sometimes even held under the direct spray if I accidentally drop a gob suds on them… while I’m lucky I don’t have hard water, they have never gotten water spots. Rarely do the leaves ‘melt’ due to water, but I occasionally need to pinch of an old leaf or two from the bottom. They get bright light, but never direct sun. (I started this when I saw African violets growing in a rain forest next to a waterfall thriving in the mist.)

Love the colours of these! I gave away all my African Violets when I moved a few years ago, but this is making me want to get another one - propagating them is so much fun!

This video came at a great time, Laura! It inspired me to repot a couple of mini violets that I just purchased. In fact, I paused the video to accomplish that project! ❤ Thank you!

Beautiful project! Nice memories of caring for my mom's African violets! 😍 When we'd get water on the leaves, we gently dabbed it off with a paper towel.

My Mom had one. It's mine now. I knew it needed repotting but didn't know for sure how, now I do. That one African Violet had become 2 and for sure needs to be repotted.

I’m so glad you’re doing a video on African violets. For my now daughter in laws bridal shower last year I had African violets in all different colors at each guest table setting and I hand painted little tiny ceramic pots white. They looked so pretty and everyone loved them! I buy them whenever I see them but I never can keep them alive! I’m sure your video will help! 😉

Thank you for this video! I love African Violets but never had any luck with them. Mainly because I really didn’t know how to care for them. Maybe the one that I currently have will have a better chance of survival now! ❤

Thanks for a great video. I’ve been growing violets off and on for years but I never knew what to do with my plants when they formed a long neck. I discovered that you can cut the healthy plant at the soil level, discard the root and pot up the part that you saved. I have about 50 violet plants in an east facing kitchen window. Most are from leaf cuttings started in water. (My preferred method for propagating violets). I love to give the babies away to friends as gifts.
