My brother and I got so good. We would be able to beat Double Dragon 1 and 2 with one quarter per game . I miss the old school arcade. Those were the days.
Welcome to the club buddy, you´re not the only one who feels way too old watching this videos. I frequently visited arcade games and the sad thing is the business is far from the golden era, circa 1980-1990.
Yeah. Because this is the original arcade version of DD II. And since this came out before the NES version, the Shadow Master didn't make an appearance. But then the staff and programers of the NES port decided to change it a little by adding the Shadow Master who you fight after the phantoms are defeated.
@felipebrasil5 The original arcade games suffered from slowdown. The slowdown is just mame being accurate. The games were the Crysis of its day. Too big of a game running on arcade hardware that could not handle it.
Yeah. The doppelganger theme music is pretty creepy and suspenseful. But yeah, I miss the days of playing games in the arcade too. Ahhh... Those were the days...
You're damn fine player! You are one of the few gamers to post their vids on TH-cam and not piss me off with lack of skill or polish. A man (or woman) after my own heart! Bravo!
I know I might be engaging in heresy here but I like this ending better. The whole concept of fighting a physical manifestation of your desire for vengeance is deep and profound. Furthermore, it also shows that despite all your efforts, Marion is still dead.
yes - i agree with you - but nintendo wouldn't allow such things. however, the nes version is still superiour when you consider gameplay and level design.
Both endings were good in their own way. While the NES game's slow-mo/monochrome finale (along with the final speech) were great, the Arcade version tells a very deep story without even using any words.
i used to hate this when i was younger, but as i got older i started to appreciate it more, it's more realistic, darker, and just fits the tone of the games better imo
Sarah Connor for me the gameplay and level design in NES Double Dragon games isn't (wasn't) as important as how they look graphically (visually) and the audio, music, sound
@AbhiB The NES version is the one where she comes back to life. I guess the ending of this version is supposed to make you feel bad that Marian is dead (hence the tear), even though you did get revenge.
I remember the shadow having a "ku, ku, ku" kind of laugh when he vanished off screen. The game sound is probably not perfectly emulated unlike the lag.
You're wrong. There was never any sound like that when he vanished. What you may be thinking of is when the shadow enters the player's body and damages it.
Fantastic memories of hard playing and coin spending a few years ago..first time I remember I found quite scary some of the sounds, like the laughter of the disapperaring-and-reapperaing monster and the big guy with suspenders..this said, performing the flying spin kick repeatedly on the coinop was not easy..
It's funny how some of the enemies just jumped to their deaths off the screen. You play very well. I always wondered about the Doppelgangers' origin. It's interesting how in the arcade version, the final boss is a ghostly phantom twin of Billy. And in the NES version, the final boss is the Shadow Warrior.
No, but you had access to a jumping roundhouse instead. There is also a close knee strike that you do on enemies that are getting up from a knockdown. It's also on the NES version. It's extremely difficult to do though, and twice as hard on the NES, you need frame perfect timing.
Ooh he nearly had you then at the end but fair enough you pretty much kicked all of their asses! I remember having thus game for St and finding that last boss really hard but I was only about 8 at the time :-)
I wonder what would have happened to the rest of the storyline for Double Dragon if they went with the arcade's route where Marion is dead? Then again, Marion is rarely, if not never, mentioned in the sequels...
Both Versions Are Great to Me! Arcade Because It looks better and The enemies are cooler and some make an appearance in the game. And NES Because Of The Final Boss music
You go through all that trouble beating up steel-clad fatties and Jheri curl Abobos while elbowing hyperactive ninjas off mountains, and Marian's all "Like, *whatever*." What a gal.
lol I like the endings in Arcade games, so rewarding... its like they know 98% of the ppl who play it wont finish it so they dont even bother! Do they give you your quarter back at the end? :P
Buen video sos un crack jugando y con una sola ficha lo veo y no lo creo. Ese juego era el mejor en su tiempo doble dragon es un pionero en juegos de pelea en equipo.
Actually, I saw clips of "Double Dragon Extreme" just a few weeks ago. And I saw the Shadow Warrior's sprites. He looks pretty cool. I would have liked to have seen him in the arcades though. But that was then. And nowadays I guess we really can't expect too much.
Hey thank you for everything I just finally got the load from oldgames.com and downloaded mame, for the first time in over 20 years I played DD 1 today. I got to work with my controller but for some reason it stoped working but man just playing on key board is cool. thank you for you help feel free to say whats up anytime you'd like. Double Dragon still rocks!!
Not a patch on the original, & was too difficult in our local arcade. The music nowhere near as good either. Nice to actually see it completed... Thanks :)
Personally, I prefer the NES version. But DD2 in the Arcades was a good game also. I think the Sound and Graphics for the Double Dragon 2 arcade version was awesome for a video game that was released in 1988. I played this game in the Arcades at age 4 with my older brother, the ending was more gloomy than the NES one though.
Yeah. I guess the tear that crawls out of her eye is supposed to symbolize sadness as the arcade version had a sad ending. While the NES version had a different ending.
Speaking of which, I think it be kind of cool if the Shadow Master was in the arcade version. I'd like to hear how the "final boss" music would have sounded like in the arcade style.
One of few people who actually knows how to play this game. The Double Dragon Advance is second best after this one. Although I miss headbutt from first one.
+Jarosław Świerczewski no coz it start headbutting something even when i dont double tab left/right arrow button............and most of time it happens when i try to avoid an attack 😐
You altered the timer. It was moving wayyy slow. When I played the arcade back in the day, the timer was you number one enemy from the moment you went down that elevator til' the end. I used the knee a lot on MachineGun Willie and the shadow. Funny when you could actually throw around MG-Willie to his death. I have Mame but dont know how to capture so as to post it here...any pointers?
@ACRedsCreations= the ending was greatly altered in the NES version. Instead of that machine gun dude, you fight a mysterious warrior known only as the Illusionist. Then, after the fight, God brings Marian back to life, and thus a more happier ending. I'm telling the truth dude. It's all here on TH-cam. KamilDowonna has it all.
Taito Published it.. Technos Created it because they were independant for Double Dragon Vanilla. Romstar Published Double Dragon Revenge but Technos still Created the game.. this bugged me out because on the arcade flyer it said RomStar (Makers of Outzone and good game also.)
Awesome. Although this version is pretty good, I think the NES version of better but there is a version that is just as good as the NES and that's the PC Engine. Hail Double Dragon.
But what version of mame do I download? I checked it out and can't find which one to use, theres many of mame downloads, is it windows specific?or is there a certin one I need, but yeah I check out both sites they seem cool.
Well, I'm sure they could do a lot better nowadays if they ever attempted to remake this game. But then, remakes tend to fall short to our expectations.
My brother and I got so good. We would be able to beat Double Dragon 1 and 2 with one quarter per game . I miss the old school arcade. Those were the days.
The big boss has refurbished his castle quite nicely I see :)
Ahhh.. Those sweet sounds of punching in the 80's. LOL
Man, those sound effects are just SICK! Sounds like an old school Bruce Lee movie! Haha
Remembering this game makes me feel old.
Welcome to the club buddy, you´re not the only one who feels way too old watching this videos. I frequently visited arcade games and the sad thing is the business is far from the golden era, circa 1980-1990.
Ariel Goldfarb i

But then the staff and programers of the NES port decided to change it a little by adding the Shadow Master who you fight after the phantoms are defeated.
you know you're a badass boss type when you have a palace that includes bottomless pits of death.
Great finish to this arcade playthrough of 'Double Dragon 2'!
I forgot about your evil doppleganger boss, right after you defeat Wily!
@felipebrasil5 The original arcade games suffered from slowdown. The slowdown is just mame being accurate. The games were the Crysis of its day. Too big of a game running on arcade hardware that could not handle it.
Love the music when you fight your doppelganger, I miss the days when arcades were a big thing.
Bravo!

You fought yourself in one as the first mirror match and the last boss in two is the same clone...lame.
Very well played bro..and thanks for such memories... Very grateful to watch it...
DD2 has taught me that all you need in life to kick ass is an elevator.
@AbhiB The NES version is the one where she comes back to life. I guess the ending of this version is supposed to make you feel bad that Marian is dead (hence the tear), even though you did get revenge.
i love the good endings and marian is alive
I remember the shadow having a "ku, ku, ku" kind of laugh when he vanished off screen. The game sound is probably not perfectly emulated unlike the lag.
You're wrong. There was never any sound like that when he vanished. What you may be thinking of is when the shadow enters the player's body and damages it.
Thx, ur right about that the game slows down when there are a lot of enemies on the screen
Thanks for putting this video up. I haven't seen anything of this game for many years. You really play this game exceptionally well. Nicely done!
Yer video trilogy on this brings back alotta great memories. Many thanks for yer work.
I haven't played this in years,Thanks for posting this,I enjoyed watching.
Nice vid. I told everyone this game runs very slow at times.
JUEGAZO DOUBLE DRAGON, SALUDOS DESDE MÉXICO.
Que no mame, lo puso en el nivel de dificultad para niñas.
Dont be fooled. The Arcade game version was extremely hard.
I always wondered what those big dudes were saying when they hit you. It kind of sounds like they're saying "Eh-Boo!" or something.

Could you do the flying knee in this one? That move was the key.
No, but you had access to a jumping roundhouse instead. There is also a close knee strike that you do on enemies that are getting up from a knockdown. It's also on the NES version. It's extremely difficult to do though, and twice as hard on the NES, you need frame perfect timing.

Siempre lo jugaba , con mis amigos de la primaria..bellos recuerdos...
NES ending was the best. And I'm glad that ending was taken as canon.
The double illusion music is straight up nightmare fuel.
Legend game... Double dragons has grt story amd music also...
I wonder what would have happened to the rest of the storyline for Double Dragon if they went with the arcade's route where Marion is dead?
Then again, Marion is rarely, if not never, mentioned in the sequels...
The NES games kept her alive, so to see what it's like just look there.
Whoever was playing this game was tearing it up
7.20.88 FURI COLOR, in this date, I had 14 years old. melancolic game ending...
I agree. The Doppelganger music on the Arcade version was so much better & sounds more chilling than the NES version of DD2.
Both Versions Are Great to Me!
Arcade Because It looks better and The enemies are cooler and some make an appearance in the game.
And NES Because Of The Final Boss music
First one's ending is way better!
You go through all that trouble beating up steel-clad fatties and Jheri curl Abobos while elbowing hyperactive ninjas off mountains, and Marian's all "Like, *whatever*."
What a gal.
She wasn’t really alive at the end; It was mainly a portrait of the three of them together before the incident took place.
lol I like the endings in Arcade games, so rewarding... its like they know 98% of the ppl who play it wont finish it so they dont even bother! Do they give you your quarter back at the end? :P

@MadMax1Hammer
Yeah I know, but it was out for the NES as well, I had it on the NES that's why I posted that..
Nice strategy on the green dudes with the sticks.
Personally, I prefer the NES version. But DD2 in the Arcades was a good game also. I played this game in the Arcades at age 4 with my older brother, the ending was more gloomy than the NES one though.
You punched those 2 boss guys in their nads like 50 times... Very entertaining!
You gotta love the Bruce Lee sounding guys with the Kendo sticks......
Nope, she's still dead in this story. The NES version tells a different tale.
Ok will do, have you had a chance to download DD or play it?
1~3面のボスを全て、リングアウトで一発で仕留めているのが凄いな!時間短縮効果と言うやつでしょうか?
Note that the Kanji on the door in the last level translates as "Akimitsu" meaning bright light. I think its also a Japanese surname.
Excelente videojuego!!!
you can download whichever one you want, preferably mameui64 or mameui 32 depending on your operating system 64 bit/32 bit.
I think it was just a photograph taken of her before she was killed. I think the Lee brothers were looking down at it to remember her or something.
Yeah. I guess the tear that crawls out of her eye is supposed to symbolize sadness as the arcade version had a sad ending. While the NES version had a different ending.
This reminds me of the original Double Dragon arcade.
yu fight a different boss in the NES version in the end right? That guy was hard.
@vigo894 on the NES version you fight the Illusionist as well. you fight the Gun guy in DD1
THIS WAS AN AWESOME GAME....WISH NINTENDO WOULD ADD THIS TO THEIR ARCADE ROSTER ON THE VIRTUAL CONSOLE
Speaking of which, I think it be kind of cool if the Shadow Master was in the arcade version. I'd like to hear how the "final boss" music would have sounded like in the arcade style.
True, though he wasn’t invented until the NES version.
This was a very fun game for me. And its still good at memory.
One of few people who actually knows how to play this game. The Double Dragon Advance is second best after this one. Although I miss headbutt from first one.
dude headbutt is so annoying in first one
+NoMi MirXa because it's hard? It works on everyone :)
+Jarosław Świerczewski no coz it start headbutting something even when i dont double tab left/right arrow button............and most of time it happens when i try to avoid an attack 😐
+Jarosław Świerczewski check my channel i have uploaded DD1 and DD2
+NoMi MirXa never happened to me.
There's no Billy or Jimmy Lee, they are the good Hammer and Spike ;o)
What other boss do you remember in the arcade?
Techno all the way for the arcade version.. Acclaim did the nes port.
Me pone triste el final... saber que ella no regresará... :c y mas triste es ver esa lágrima u_u
+Retro Gamer Girl final no apto para niñas
pues io zoy niña y lo vi y me guzta eze juego :v xDDD
espera wey,
me estas diciendo que todo el puto desmadre de andar madreando pendejos para al final enfrentarte con tu doble diabolio y que el pinche final es que ya estaba muerta desde un principio?
NO ME JODAS!
@williamblair11 1p and 2p stood for Player 1 and Player 2. It was 25 cents american to play this in 1989.
@ACRedsCreations= the ending was greatly altered in the NES version. Instead of that machine gun dude, you fight a mysterious warrior known only as the Illusionist. If there is one thing that the Japanese are way ahead of its time its gaming nobody can compete with them
This soundtrack...I want it!
There isn't any in the Arcade version. The "final boss" you mean was a new addition to the NES version.
Taito Published it.. Technos Created it because they were independant for Double Dragon Vanilla.
Romstar Published Double Dragon Revenge but Technos still Created the game.. this bugged me out because on the arcade flyer it said RomStar (Makers of Outzone and good game also.)
Yeah, I played this in the arcade, and I didn't remember any boss after the Doppelgangers (Shadows). That's why I was curious.
the mini-bosses seem alot easier in this one than the NES version
Ahhh...memories. Me and friends would always bet on who would get the farthest on one quarter. They don't make games like this anymore.
The characters in this game resemble the ones in Battletoads & Double Dragon for NES
We used to call the last guy Machine Gun Harry... is that the accepted name, or did my mate make that up?
Close, it's actually Machine Gun Willy. But that's very close oddly enough.
1:54 'OOO me balls!'
wow, the arcade version looks and sounds better than the nes version
@smithmikeal have you ever triyed the advance version???
Awesome. Although this version is pretty good, I think the NES version of better but there is a version that is just as good as the NES and that's the PC Engine. Hail Double Dragon.
@dalecampbl6 Yep. Absolutely.
I always thought the music when you fight Willy is cool.
Don't forget it even had more levels and a better story as well!
HMPH! LoL dont u just love the transition from projects to farm to rocky temple?? genius LOL!
I believe that was marion, whom Willy killed in the begining.
Jeff at 4:05 Teal Suit on. Jeff is the Cousin of Jimmy, and Billy Lee--he always seemed to envy, or hate the Twins.
But what version of mame do I download? I checked it out and can't find which one to use, theres many of mame downloads, is it windows specific?or is there a certin one I need, but yeah I check out both sites they seem cool.
@carlosaround
i think so!
actually Marion´s resurrection is dumb!
nostalgico creepy music final boss, ooo epu epu memorables fx sound
Pensé que era Apu.
***** jajaja fue mi hueva de escribir bien en ingles, es el grito del enemigo
KibaElric See.
Love the way its the same boss as one, just with a red shirt this time lol.
1:02 superb roundhouse kick
Literally kicking ass all the way.
Well, I'm sure they could do a lot better nowadays if they ever attempted to remake this game. But then, remakes tend to fall short to our expectations.
@HadeanAgent Worst part is, the only guy WITH a machine gun never shoots the gun at you! He keeps whipping you with it! USE YOUR BULLETS, WILLY!!!
Well, what do you expect from a game that's now 20 years old?
