The helicopter in the garage is the one from Cobra Command. Why? Both games were designed by Yoshihisa Kishimoto. Along with that, in the original Double Dragon arcade, the red car from another Data East game, Road Blaster/Road Avenger (also designed by Yoshihisa Kishimoto) appeared in the garage.
Legendary Arcade Version , was a game we used to spend all our quarters on in the late 80's . My father was in the Army and all the Soldier and Kids in the local town by the Base used to flock to the Arcades to chill. Good Stuff. Needs to be included in Xbox Live Library , & Playstation Online Catalog
@ojideagu The fact is, the NES one isn't about punching and kicking, I usually play the game on just the hurricane kick, super knee, and uppercut. I'll admit, it doesn't "feel" like a good beat em up, yet I still enjoy the gameplay anyways, since I don't consider it to be a beat em up in the traditional sense. As for this game, it gets VERY slow from too many bad guys, and I don't really appreciate the combat system much anyways. If I want to play a good beat em up, I'll play Streets of Rage 2.
I'm currently playing 'Double Dragon Advance' right now on the GBA, and that is probably one of the best titles in the entire series! Still, Part 2 in the arcades is a fun trip down memory lane!
@ojideagu Maybe a 5 year old could enjoy it, but I doubt they could beat it. I enjoy the NES one more than the arcade simply because it provides a better challenge, doesn't slow down as much, and has the super knee. It's worth asking if you have beaten both versions, which I think is necessary to really say which one is more fun.
Amazed how many Americans think Double Dragon was an NES game, jesus christ. The NES versions were just PORTS, it was released on every home system, and the arcade, especially Double Dragon 1, is one of the most influential arcade games of all time.
Sarah Connor Are you high? The NES version doesn't even have 2 player, It's called DOUBLE dragon because you're meant to co-op in the game! Do you realise how ridiculous that is? Also the NES game was rushed and glitchy as hell. Next you will be saying NES Street Fighter was better than the arcade.
ojideagu nes version does have double co-op function. dunno what you are talking about. it actually had 2 modes: one where u could beat ur friend and one where you couldn't hurt player 2.
Sarah Connor No it does not, you're clearly thinking of double dragon 2. Wikipedia on NES double Dragon 1: "The most notable difference the NES version has from the arcade game is the omission of the arcade's two players cooperative game mode. Instead, the two-players mode in the main game ("Mode A") is done by alternating"
It's amazing that in one year Final Fight would be released, setting a precedent for all side scrolling beat-em-ups to follow. Capcom sealed the deal by releasing Street Fighter II in '91.
The Double Dragon 2 NES game has better appeal to me...this arcade version never looked that appealing to me. Thanks for bringing back the memory of this game though.
Ryu first used his spin kick (known as "Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku" or "Hurricane Kick") in the 1987 Street Fighter 1, while Billy and Jimmy Lee first used their spin kick (known either as the "Hurricane Kick" or "Cyclone Spin Kick") in Double Dragon II: The Revenge. It might be a coincidence, because there weren't many people paying attention to Street Fighter 1 back then.
not sure if anyone ever noticed this but the boss at about 7:30 seems to be a modified Andre the Giant sprite from WWF Superstars (also by Technos Japan). the move set is pretty much identical and I'd swear its the same walk cycle
Well, you're right about one thing; the 80s was a mystical decade. And well, you may have you missed out on a lot. But look at it this way; its never too late to start anew. Millions of possibilities still await to begin.
Technically, the song is credited to both Collins and Philip Bailey (the lead singer of Earth, Wind and Fire); the song was co-written by both singers and bassist Nathan East. Originally released as the second single (#2 in February 1985) on Bailey's second solo album, 1984's "Chinese Wall," it seemed to be more popular among fans of Phil Collins, and Collins performed the duet in his live sets and later appeared on his "Hits" anthology CD.
The music heard in the arcade version's Mission 2 sounds so catchy, it sounds better than the NES version of Mission 1's music. Right now, it's making me picture the retro versions of Billy Lee and Cody (from Final Fight) fighting each other in MUGEN.
@scottvska Good question I think the challenge level might have been put on low because in the first game they where much tougher you had to take them down something like 3 times.
@ojideagu The GBA version was beyond the Arcade version since they added more levels and added the NES moves like the super knee and super uppercut. Also i'm not denying that the Arcade version wasn't a hit but the NES version improved on the Arcade version in every way other then the larger graphics which the Arcade version itself couldn't handle since there was so much slow down.
The funny thing about watching this, is when I played it in the arcade as a kid there was no music. I always thought that the programmers were so in a rush that they forget to put music in
@ojideagu Oh, also, answer this, when Capcom released Bionic Commando 2009 and Bionic Commando Rearmed, which version of Bionic Commando did they based those games on, arcade or NES? And it was Million that released Double Dragon Advance for the GBA not Nintendo, it was only lisenced to Nintendo.
@ojideagu It's no doubt. I have played DD2 Arcade game at a Midway's Aladdin's Castle Arcade that was formerly located at the St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights, Illinois back in 1989 & 1990. It was mostly found in the back of the arcade. I played the game and beat it.
@ojideagu Hey, since most people hail the NES version of Double Dragon is the best, I want to ask you something how do you feel about the NES Ninja Gaiden series being better that the arcade version?
The actual arcade game is on ebay for only 300 dollars but it is pick up only in northern wisconsin. I wish I lived closer I would definitely buy it. Pass the word on I know that someone out there has to want this game as much as I do.
Those 2 in particular, no. It wasnt needed. However, there is a knee attack that they both share and it is not mentioned in the manual of the NES VERSION. And that is the one you do to enemies as soon as they're about to stand. In the NES version, no enemy can counter that. On the Arcade, just the disappearing dude.
I remember spending all what my parents gave me on the arcades, Geez The Double dragon II´ owner had to win a lot with my arcade problems...I was a DDII junkie I accept it
Man..This is no where near as groundbreaking or memorable as part 1.I almost forgot about this game. I can't believe they killed Marion this time. That is soooo cold!!
I liked the Nes version but the arcade version is the best version to me. Better sound and visuals. I absolutely love the stage 2 music in the arcade version.
@ojideagu Yes, DD1 was the top of the heap and made a way for other fighting games. Some home versions were good and some were bad. I still play the NES version of Double Dragon and the Atari 2600 & 7800 versions in spite of how bad people said they were. And for your information, Street Fighter II came out for the SNES not the NES and it was nearly arcade perfect.
@TripleT706 Yep. Maybe they can't afford fuel and rockets. Now that I think about it this is kinda a strange game. First one made sense, but this one seems odd some how.
I don't know about the Arcade version, but 3 was the best NES DD imo. Added a lot of moves, and the difficulty was at that "NES hard" sweet spot that made it tough as nails at first, but kept you playing until you beat it 10 times over.
!!!!! I like how in the first game they just punched her and carried her off, but in this one they just rose up righteous and SHOT the poor girl. Crazy.
Hmmm.....there's some kind of aircraft in my garage but I'm just gonna chase these guys down on foot.lol.....And why in the hell is it in that little ass garage.lol
@ojideagu You said that before and how do you know that they didn't hail the NES version as the best? Did you read all the game magazines? Oh, I believe I said this before, when they made the GBA they did base the game off of the arcade version of the first Double Dragon, that is a given. But, they did adapted properties from both arcade and NES versions of Double Dragon II, Super Double Dragon, DDIII, and Renegade.
@ojideagu No, actually i don't like the NES version of the Turtles Arcade game , it was a watered down port with all the moves gimped and the extra 2 levels didn't really add anything other than to drag the game further. Street Fighter didn't get good console ports until the Saturn arrived , the SNES did it some justice but it wasn't all the way there yet.
yo,is it possible that u can just post the Double Dragon 2 title theme(arcade version)on here? i love the theme and i cant find it anywhere. i would like to hear it without the punches and kicks and yells lol
They always did in the 2nd arcade game. I like how Billy/Jimmy doesn't have to mourn, since, like everyone in this game, Marian fades into nothingness after being shot dead.
Things you learn from this video: 1) 4 punches to a woman's shin will kill her. 2) A man with an eyepatch is more likely to survive a direct hit from an exploding hand grenade than a guy in a wife-beater. 3) The taller the man and the less understandable his speech, the tougher he is.
Double dragon should have a remake on xbox 360 & PS3. They can do so much with this old classic i.e. have special cinematic movie cutscenes like in res evil 5, with huge variety of bad dudes from street fights, bar brawls, nightclub, martial arts dojos. They take all the fight choreography from so many styles of martial arts and really turn it into something. But chances of that happening is a big 000000000000000000000000000000...
Marian is brutally shot to death by Willy and the gang. And Billy fights his way through hordes of enemies with a vengeance. Hence the title; Double Dragon II the Revenge.
@ojideagu Also at that time, I might have agreed with you about the graphics and music because they are better than the NES version. But, we are looking at a big arcade machine that manage one game and can occupy hundreds of bits compared to an a machine that can manage several games but has only eight bits to work with and still does a very good job.
@ojideagu Oh, and one more thing, some of us "NES fanboys" actually did grow up with the arcade. It's just that some of us enjoyed playing games whatever the hell versions they were. NES, Atari, or arcade, some of us just see a game. But, as for as DDII goes the NES is the best!! Did you ever truly analyze both games or did you just say, "This is the arcade version, it is the best because it is the arcade version"?
I remember seeing this machine in an arcade when I was a kid and going "WOW, there's a part II???" But watching this version, it looks like the NES version is actually BETTER, lol. They screwed up the first DD on NES, but they got it right with the sequel.
this is one of those rare cases where the NES port (which was actually rebuilt from the ground up) is superior to the arcade "original". if you pay close attention the the level layouts, you'll see that DD2 is the same game as DD1.
The Kunio-kun series is better than the Renegade series. Why would they change Technos Japan's mascot? Same thing happened to Sunsoft's real mascot, Hebe from the Hebereke series, who became Bop-Louie in the PAL versions of the first Hebereke game in the series titled "Ufouria: The Saga".
@ojideagu hehe =), kinda knew some1 was gona say that. but hey their both great, maybe I chose thenes version because it reminded me of when I gvot my first one at chrimbo all those years ago. I would't turn down a DD2 cabint tho, tat woud be well sweet!.

Que recuerdos de mi infancia en los ochenta....Nostalgia del pasado.....Saludos desde Santiago de Chile.
I used to play the heck out of this game in the arcades when i was a kid. It's got some great music too!!
Ahh yes. I can imagine that kind of music being used in some of Jackie Chan's movies he acted in back in the 80s. It'd be so sweet!
@ojideagu
Maybe a 5 year old could enjoy it, but I doubt they could beat it.
I enjoy the NES one more than the arcade simply because it provides a better challenge, doesn't slow down as much, and has the super knee.
It's worth asking if you have beaten both versions, which I think is necessary to really say which one is more fun.
Man Billy is an unstoppable killing machine time around. Two hits or a spin kick and they are out.
Amazed how many Americans think Double Dragon was an NES game, jesus christ. The NES versions were just PORTS, it was released on every home system, and the arcade, especially Double Dragon 1, is one of the most influential arcade games of all time.
yes but NES version is so much better.

Some of the best music and sound effects in any fighting game.

That's right. For some reason, they had the background music from stages 1 and 2 switched around in the NES version. But that's cool.
Man. Seeing this brings back memories. They don't make games like this anymore....
Hmm. Good point. That move seems to have been left out of the arcade version. And it's such a powerful move.
Good playing. I see you know all the secrets and tactics to kill the enemy easily or make them kill themselves! lol
Did any one notice this? The NES version of DD2's first level music is the DD2 Arcade's second level music, and vice versa!

Man, the background music from "Stage 1" is so catchy.
Billy and Jimmy were equal opportunity ass kickers.
My memory of the arcade version is a bit fuzzy. Did it slow down this bad, or does mame just have trouble emulating it?
The actual arcade game is on ebay for only 300 dollars but it is pick up only in northern wisconsin. I wish I lived closer I would definitely buy it. Pass the word on I know that someone out there has to want this game as much as I do.

BRASIL!!! Saudade desse jogo incrível, ficava horas jogando na rua.
That helicopter does look pretty bad ass
Even I had discovered that since I just downloaded the arcade version of DD2...and I've been used to the NES version the most.
Yes they did. Makes for a tragic story and a good reason for the main character to be pissed.
Please bring this game back out. Never got the chance to beat it. Beat the first one.
Man..This is no where near as groundbreaking or memorable as part 1.I almost forgot about this game. I can't believe they killed Marion this time. That is soooo cold!!

Those dudes in green with the kali sticks were a pain in the ass.
!!!!!
I like how in the first game they just punched her and carried her off, but in this one they just rose up righteous and SHOT the poor girl. Crazy.
The lag when too many enemies appeared at once. I remember that
@Eredora Derp, arcade. But it's also available for NES. That's the best version.
Hmmm.....there's some kind of aircraft in my garage but I'm just gonna chase these guys down on foot.lol.....And why in the hell is it in that little ass garage.lol
@AlegreFranz Little trivia: That's the helicopter from my favorite lasergame of all time: COBRA COMMAND
I think so. Because Marian's dead. The image at the end has got to be a photograph that was taken prior to Marian's murder.
Real creative ways to finish Burnov & Abore off, I have to say.
@ojideagu You said that before and how do you know that they didn't hail the NES version as the best? Did you read all the game magazines? I fucking loved this game! It was the first fighting game I got past the third level on without dying, on a Pound's worth of credit.
Gracias por el contenido nostalgia y buenos recuerdos
yo,is it possible that u can just post the Double Dragon 2 title theme(arcade version)on here? i love the theme and i cant find it anywhere. i would like to hear it without the punches and kicks and yells lol
man... i loved this game when little!
They always did in the 2nd arcade game. I like how Billy/Jimmy doesn't have to mourn, since, like everyone in this game, Marian fades into nothingness after being shot dead.
Ever heard of the arcade machines, where you put coins in to play? Although this guy played it on PC through an emulator.
@ojideagu uh huh, but they didn't forget about the NES version of DD I & II and Super Double Dragon
I wish arcades would come back
Well, at least the Arcade version had better graphics... But you were right about the gameplay, though.
@ojideagu That's because Double Dragon WAS great on the nes.
@ninobaldan Yep. The resemblence is unmistakable.
Things you learn from this video:
1) 4 punches to a woman's shin will kill her.

what the heck i diddnt even know there was an arcade version of this i only grew up knowing the nes version
that guy at 3:41 has just been sitting behind that wall all day waiting for you to come! Then he breaks it down.
It's cool but... it's so slow, were they trying to make it life like?
Awesome. Time for Part 2.
I want to flash a couple of times and disappear when I die, too.

Double Dragon 2 - 80's action movie music
@Chryan its the first time I came across a game that was better on a console (nes) rather than the arcade.
Are you sure that arcade cpu was not a 16-bit?
The arcade machine came first the NES is a port the same with all double dragon games up to double dragon 4 on the SNES.
I remember seeing this machine in an arcade when I was a kid and going "WOW, there's a part II???" But watching this version, it looks like the NES version is actually BETTER, lol. They screwed up the first DD on NES, but they got it right with the sequel.
I played this in the Arcade back in the day and thought the NES version of DD2 was better , it had more content and more better designed levels.
Despite the weaker graphics the NES Double Dragons had a smoother framerate and better gameplay. The arcade originals were too choppy.
Loved this game, my style of play was little bit more entertaining than that my man.
Cheers for the post anyway : )
this is one of those rare cases where the NES port (which was actually rebuilt from the ground up) is superior to the arcade "original". if you pay close attention the the level layouts, you'll see that DD2 is the same game as DD1.
one of my favorite games, ever. but i hate when it gets slow.
muy buen video game, que maravillosos recuerdos de mi infancia
the nes version was better than the arcade
which button do i hit for punch?...howard stern rules...more video games please..
Governor Terminator Trouble at 7:11 got his butt kicked. good job!
4:29 starts the BEST song. Unleashing the Ogre!!! BEST GODDAMN DD SONG... EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ojideagu well when it was on Sega consoles it wasn't all that hot.
well there is also the pc engine version, the only thing thats different that Mission 4and 5 are rotated.
i wonder how this game would be if they brought it out on the PS3 or XBOX360 ?
@ojideagu hehe =), kinda knew some1 was gona say that. but hey their both great, maybe I chose thenes version because it reminded me of when I gvot my first one at chrimbo all those years ago. I would't turn down a DD2 cabint tho, tat woud be well sweet!.
"Easy Lover" by Phil Collins good ear Ronald Mcdonald
there was an arcade version of this?
where did you find your version of this game for mame. I have it but it runs super slow. Please help.
