1:56 I don't care what anyone says; when I was a young kid in the 80's I would crack the hell up each time a female enemy went huuuuahhhh when she disappeared. Hahahaha
My very first arcade game I ever played. I was 6 years old and spent hours and hours at the arcade playing it until i complete 6 months later. Will always be a shadow in my life.
My favorite childhood game. I could never get tired of this game and I love the freaking music too. I still play it until this day. I have it as a emulator
OH MY GOD to this day I never realised you could kick the boxes. I've finshed this game half a dozen times at least and played it a million more, and this is the first time I've seen a box kicked (and actually noticed it). Also, best arcade music ever.
Man I use to play this game and be late for school every morning.....this is funny...games have come a long way...I still would buy this game.......LOL...cool video dude......Wow
What musics!!! Were really good for the sound technology of that years either for the effects ( apart the drums effect that really sucks) either for the armonies that retake me in the '80ies when I was a child and when I played the coin up version all the time. One of the best videogames ever!!! No other words
Love this game, I think it's one of only two arcade games I ever beat. Although a lot of those older games you couldn't really beat they just went on and on until you got your high score. I beat this one with a friend at my birthday party at some arcade/go-cart track and I beat Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles along with a few friends at somebody's birthday party at a skating rink. We did it in skates.
The cool thing about these games is that, since the gameplay was a bit narrow, you ended up learning to use the bugs to your advantage, and they were learned game by game or mouth to mouth in the arcade. Fucking good times all the way
I second that. Some games have moves that can be abused to great effect. The problem is that doing so not only makes for a boring LP, but it also shows a complete lack of skill. I love watching LP's like this. This is a perfect example of what skill is. Santora2007 uses ALL of the moves and weapons to his advantage, not just one or two. Very very entertaining stuff!
I have never put more quarters into a game than this classic! I finally found the original coin-op/stand up arcade game with the original cabinet (I heard that is very rare.) Suckered some kid into selling it to me for $100 bucks. Sits proudly in my living room, who needs a flat screen for entertainment....
Fun fact! The red car you see in the garage that Billy & Jimmy come out of at the start is the car from Road Avenger. The original arcade version (Road Blaster) was made in 1985, two years before Double Dragon hit the Arcades. One of the guys who created it worked on Double Dragon & added the car as a neat little easter egg.
I remember playing this at the local 7-11 while sippin on a pina colada slurpee. Remember when you got that $5 in quarters and before you knew it your already down to your last one. Then its either "hey you got an extra quarter I can borrow?" to some random kid, or going into your parents closet to check every pocket. The good ol days!!!
there certainly was something about this game when it was first released on arcade that sticks in everyones minds, wherever they were. And yea, it always seemed to be clustered next to robocop+dragon ninja :D great memories
First played this in Italy on holiday when I was 8! Begged my mum to buy it for me on the master system when we returned home to England. I was a very VERY happy boy. I agree the arcade version was superior but at the time it really didn't matter did it? Time for some emulation methinks. Awesome game.
great video i can tell you played this once or twice before, lol. I work as a lorry driver and i have my lap top hooked up to a 12v charger and have this on there for my break times lol =)
Ah, what a game! When I was a kid, me and friend from street have finished this game playing together. We where the first in town who did it and between rest of the kids we where famous (for two days). Imagine that :) Game was still new, we have just discovered that magic elbow move and the rest was the history. Btw, after the last boss, when we needed to fight between us for the girl, we almost got fight for real! Ha ha! I think that we didn't talk for the rest of that day.
Seedy arcades with the smelly managers, stench of smoke (all kinds...) and loud 80s metal and new-wave music. Me and my omnipresent jean jacket would dump PAYCHECKS into Final Fight, Wonder Boy, Ninja Gaiden, Rampage... the list goes on of course, but who could ever forget the first time seeing/playing Double Dragon?
This game brings back so many good memories, when i would stay up all night playing with my brother. I remember i purposely would grab his Guy and throw him at the BAD GUYS! lol
Damn, I must be getting old. Still remember the owner of the arcade place shouting at me: "quit playing the game. You know that you've got to be at least 16 to play!!. I was about 14 back then and that didn't stop me from returning everytime I could even if it was forbiden by law in my country. Seems like it was yesterday...
So true. I Had the Master System version. Lots of flickering graphics and much smaller sprites, but essentially it was all there. The D-pads on our controllers broke off because of that game. ...People who didn't loiter in arcades forget how long it took home consoles to catch up.
fantastic game i have it on jamma board in a cabinet--you can actually go through the entire game just by using elbow--with no lives lost on a good day!!
I remeber playing this as a kid at skegness arcades :) I actually used to qeue to play it !!! It was so brilliant, especially two player :) the knee to the head technique was best !! ha ha
Ive been telling my friends the same for the last few years. They could make a kick ass remake with todays technology. Im not into the gaming scene today to be honest, but you can bet I would buy a system to play a Double Dragon remake.
The red car in the garage is the one from Road Blaster/Road Avenger. Why? Both games were designed by Yoshihisa Kishimoto. Along with that, in Double Dragon II: The Revenge, the helicopter from another Data East game, Cobra Command (also designed by Yoshihisa Kishimoto) appeared in the garage.
My mother never let me play this game as a child because she hated it that you had to hit the girls with the whips. I made the argument that the whip-wielding girls were plenty tough and could stand on their own but to no avail.
They used to have this at the 7-11 when I was a kid, but I first played it at a water park on my cousin's birthday! Too much fun! Great game, good food and TONS of girls in bikinis! I was in heaven! Final Fight DID copy this game though! The title uses words that start with the same letter. Also, if you play FF, notice the "Jake" character is wearing VERY similar clothing as Billy Lee! Great game! Grandad of the beat'em up genre!
On co-op, we used to yell "dame pantalla!" all the time, which means "gimme screen!", i.e. move your guy over here so I can pick this up/kick this ass. I still use that on some local co-ops
@oxe161 I agree, I remember when you put in the quarter or press start on controller and game would start. Nowadays you have to wait for the dozens of companies that make the games, the huge introduction, and a tutorial for the game. Back then you had two buttons one to jump and the other to kick ass.
This was my favorite arcade game as a kid. Nobody believed me when I said you can get the machine gun at the end. You have to let the big dude throw you up to the balcony to get the machine gun. Then blast away. You can beat the whole game witgh 1 quarter, just use elbow.
I take that back. The Sega genesis/Megadrive version was very good, even a little batter than the arcade graphics wise, but it came out years later, long after everybody had moved on from Double Dragon.
yes you are right.its been along time since played this.and upon writing my first comment i wasnt thinking how you wont be able to actually get the box to the last doors but i did bring it with me all the way to the green bridge.LOL.
Double Dragon II on the NES is THE shit. The music is awesome and doesn't sound distorted. It's overall better designed. It's indeed the "music" that made double dragon. So I suggest you play double dragon II.
Kick punch uppercut was my best and most deadly combo(or just kick uppercut)... then came my reverse elbow and back kick... One credit style.... the good old days...
REALMENTE ATRAYENTE, LA MUSICA ESTA CHINGONA ... QUE HUBIERA SIDO MI VIDA SIN LAS MAQUINITAS, EN ESPECIAL ESTE VIDEO JUEGO, ME ACUERDO DESDE QUE NO SABIA QUE BOTONES APRETAR HASTA VOLVERME UN EXPERTO CHIDO POR SUBIRLO
@Wizard66 Yep, I have it. Very good game but I still wish they'd release slowdown free versions of the first 2 arcade games. Advance does differ quite a bit in the later stages vs the arcade.
Wow, judging by the top comments I feel like I'm the only person to like both the NES and arcade versions of Double Dragons 1 and 2, the arcade was without a doubt the most technically superior, but the NES version in my own personal opinion wasn't a bad port considering the limitations of the hardware. Personally I like both versions, if people don't like one version, that's fine. But please stop arguing and accept the fact that we all came here for the same reason, to see Double dragon!
i remember when i use to try and see how far i could move the very first box ,and one time a friend and i got it all the way to the green bridge but it makes you throw it when the big doors to the last level.also the box would turn purple if you carried it to the next level with you
The slowdoen on this game is something I never really noticed when it first came out - now its kind of grating.. Still, an undeniable classic.. I have the Megadrive version with that funny cardboard box.
Tell me more about this retroarch wii. Are there a lot of arcade downloads on it? I got the regular Wii and the only Double Dragon game I can find is the boring NES version.
I had a friend in grade school whow as a huge liar and he played this game in an arcade once and he told me about it and he made all kinda of insane shit up about it and made it sounds 10 times better than it was. I guess i was naive for believe him but i remember dreaming about this game. When i finally played it...i was very disappointed. And it's a great game and a classic still....
You really gotta appreciate the stupidity of the AI in these old games. When you mentally put yourself back into the 80s, the behavior didn't seem so bad compared to today's games. I find this humorous.
If i get to do my own version of Double Dragon, it would have the added content from Double Dragon Advance, but everything would be in pre-rendered 3-d graphics in the vein of Donkey Kong Country, while anything non-buggy missing in Double Dragon Advance would be restored, also i would add new twists on the game's story, such as the Lee brothers having joined the U.S. army shortly after becoming martial arts instructors, coincidently, this might remind you of Enter the Dragon, where it's Lee....
I remeber when this game was in corner stores my friend n i would play this game endlessly, one day i made it to the end, there was competition between him and i,it got to be who would make it on only 1 quarter, then without dying once and it and then who made it without losing 1 square lmao!!!
Wouldn't you actually lose it when you have to climb the wall going up the mountain, just after the bridge? Because you can't carry boxes while climbing, unless there's a glitch I'm not aware of?
Beat em ups are games u can play 50 times and not get bored im supposed to be mw2, and ps3, and wii...but i prefer old school, the music, the cheap deaths, the PWNED! moments, and of course the co-op moments like "good job" or "dude wtf are u doin" ah nostalgic

You can kick knife's out of the air! No frickin' way! Now I have a reason to use that flux capacitor that's been gathering dust to inform 9 yr old me I was doing it wrong
You can kick KNIVES out of the air, too! Boy, with spelling and grammar like that, you must be a "content squad leader" at some gay-ass company like Merkle. Home oh.
the soundtrack still puts me on edge haha, stressful game! one of the first games I ever played. Cheers for sharing
Late 2024 and this is still the most impressive DD play through I’ve ever seen.

thanks for uploading! I remember how I used to sneak out of the house to play this game late at night1 One of the best beat-em-ups for that era!
My very first arcade game I ever played. I was 6 years old and spent hours and hours at the arcade playing it until i complete 6 months later. Will always be a shadow in my life.
Awesome! I played this first time in 1990 in Moscow when I was only 12.
The golden era of videogames INDEED!
I NEVER get tired of those punching sounds. Great stress relief.
My favorite childhood game. I could never get tired of this game and I love the freaking music too. I still play it until this day. I have it as a emulator

Nice, entertaining ways of defeating the enemy. Like oil drum soccer. Getting opponents to jump off cliffs.

I like the cat sleeping on a trash can, and doesnt give a shit about Billy and Abobo beating each other up.
Timeless classic!! :D
I never knew you could kick the barrels in this game... thought that feature was only in the 2nd game.
there certainly was something about this game when it was first released on arcade that sticks in everyones minds, wherever they were.

Some nice tactics. Thanks for not elbowing 100% of the game!

Got to love the deliberate non-use of the Cheese Elbow.
He used some of the classic tricks and exploits, too.
