Imagine trying to look for emeralds and defeating boss enemies with no rings before the batteries go dead lol! I beat the game finally and rescued tails with just barely enough battery left before it went dead lol

Interesting how the Master System version of this ending theme is faster and more cheerful for both good and bad endings, whereas the Game Gear version uses this theme as the bad ending but sounds sadder and slower.
The reason why he comes back in other games is because thats just how the gameplay works , it's all just a game mechanic and game mechanics are not connected with the story .
Am I the only one who thought the constellation at the end was genuinely just a 'Go back and get your buddy' thing instead of some grim implication of Tails' murder? I mean, Eggman never WINS if you forget the emeralds in the other games, he just does a 'Nyah, nyah, I still have them, come and get me!' taunt at the end.
Imagine if you lost the Metal Sonic race in Sonic CD, instead of losing a life, the game would still continue to Metallic Madness but Amy would be missing. Then after saving or failing to save Little Planet, Sonic looks up and sees Amy's shadow in the sky like how he sees Tails, and realizes oh sh**, I let Amy die!

What if he was dreaming the whole time, tails was safe and they beat robotnik after he caught tails. And this is all just a fear of losing tails. I find it really interesting how abruptly the game ends just because you didn't get the Chaos Emeralds, and also how one character missing from the sky completely changes the overtones of the ending. Sonic being there with Tails, looking up at both their apparitions? Represents how good friends they are, that their bond will never break. Tails solo? It's like a reminder that he exists - or existed. Then the kick in the balls from the Game Over screen.
I love everything about this ending. The music. The stop and sign that sonic is regretting not helping his friend. Then the game over with the sad music to top it off. It’s really something awesome.

After seeing the good ending I realized he isn't dead, the game is just incomplete. You don't fight robtonik in the end so it's almost saying like you still gotta do one last thing. When you get the good ending they're both in the sky.

But that would’ve been in vain, because Tails would’ve just come back to life a second after being killed by Mephiles.

I love it, my big sister showed me this back when the Game Gear was a huge thing
after Tails died, Sonic got into witchcraft and necromancy. He performed some sort of spell that would raise Tails back from the dead, because all he wanted was his buddy to come back. Little did he know, one of the side effects would be invincibility for the subject being resurrected. And then 14 years later, when Mephiles killed Sonic, Tails had wished he was killed by Mephiles instead. But that would’ve been in vain, because Tails would’ve just come back to life a second after being killed by Mephiles.
