Id love to see this as a full series of Alfie exploring the history of different clubs and derbies.
So many interesting stories and rivalries out there beyond the top 4-6 leagues (England, Spain, Italy, and Germany + France & Netherlands). Copa90 has their Derby Days series which is great!

I love this documentary, I’m American but I believe that football across the pond shares more in common with college football here in the states than most realize. Especially in the southeast and also we have a game here that is very much like the one Alfie plays at the beginning, it’s called tackle the man with the football. I know, sounds complex doesn’t it?
Interesting to consider the timelines for the development of both games. 1860-1864 America was going through it's most traumatic and deadly war precisely while organized soccer was first developing in England. 1869 was the first college football game in America between Princeton and Rutgers.
From the South US myself and I'm quite familiar with that game lol, but the name it's sometimes still called is....controversial 😅😂

I know very little about the football played in the UK but I do know and understand the way the fans feel about their team. The feeling after a win against your rival, and the losses. The superstitious nature and rituals of our respective sports (mine is college football).The traditions and the memories shared with friends and family and the stories that stem from these experiences.

Hi Alfie, great video and thanks for coming to Sheffield. Just to try and change your opinion on"the defining" moment in football history (as you describe it), the FA also had the 'fair catch' rule and by 1872 this rule had gone in both London & Sheffield and been replaced by heading (which began in Sheffield). Also, players are allowed to handle the ball even today, when they throw it back in from side touch. Originally Sheffield up to 1877 wouldn't even allow use of the hands for a throw in but the FA did. In 1877 both the Sheffield & FA rules amalgamated so the rules we still play by today contain many rules & features originally invented in the Sheffield game, crossbars, free kicks, penalties, 90 mins, 11 a side, passing, heading, referees, corners, tournament football, clubs, matches between clubs, etc.. Also, you are correct making the link between early football and cricket. In Sheffield most clubs in the early days came from cricket clubs which is why Sheffield invented a game that wasn't dribbling rugby like the FA. Sheffield's game was called 'loose' & a "passing on game". Sheffield originally had no offside so you witnessed club captains dictating the field (as they did cricket), players running onto passes, into space, through balls, balls over the top, crosses, free kicks, ball into space, heading, long balls, ball out to the wing, basically modern football was happening in Sheffield as early as 1861 & we have the evidence to show that. Players like Jack Hunter (England's 1st working class captain) took Sheffield football to places like Blackburn to help Blackburn Olympic beat Old Etonians in the 1883 Cup Final. This match was in my opinion the defining moment in modern football and it showed the extent of Sheffield impact in the first 25 years of the game.

Interesting info about a rouge, which is still used in Canadian Football which is more like American Football. It’s a missed field goal that either travels through the end zone or, when missed, the player who returns it is tackled in the end zone. It’s different than a safety in football (known as football in places where football is known as soccer instead of football being known as … throw egg.)
