    The 350 was damn close in torque and hp to the 403 in stock form. I had several 350s that ran awesome we used to be on the hunt all the time for deisel g bodys or even Chevy pickups with the olds deisel motors that were blown and swap in the mighty 350 rockets out of vista cruisers or anything actually as long as we used the right quadrajet from a 350 olds and made sure the H.E.I s mechanical advance was In perfect working order add a curve kit so it came in fast low compression motors love it a good coil wires plugs and all a 350 rocket in a g body w a 350 turbo and shift kit was a blast to run around in comfortable ride nice interior cutlass supreme or something and it would eat up Camaros and mustangs that thought they had something lmao and stock too just dual exhaust a krylon paint job and fun fast for cheap.lol

      Yeah it’s pretty fun cruiser my only complaint is I think the head gasket is blown on the 403. Only thing I need at this point is headgaskets then I can install the 350 heads on the 403

    If the 403 hasn't even had a compression boost, that's all the more impressive. The factory compression on a 403 was around 8:00 to 1:00 or just a bit lower. If you can get smaller CC chambered heads or notched Pistons instead of deep dish, nine to one or better compression ratio can make some very big power and torque.

    • @dirtcheapmedia3390
      @dirtcheapmedia3390  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Factory 403 heads are on it but not sure on pistons. I believe it is still 8.0:1 I have a set of 350 heads that are worked over set aside for it but I’m waiting on funds before they can be installed. Overall it’s a pretty nice setup but still has room to improve

    • @therealtech833
      @therealtech833 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dirtcheapmedia3390 heck yeah it is. If you ever have to pull it open, get that compression ratio up, those 403s can be monsters, never having to rev over 5,000.

    • @dirtcheapmedia3390
      @dirtcheapmedia3390  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s what the 350 heads will do. Should be close to 10:1 when it’s all said and done. In a newer vid. I installed a tach and did some test runs. The 403 did a 15.03 at 93mph while only doing a 2.65 60’ no prep 26F*

    • @dirtcheapmedia3390
      @dirtcheapmedia3390  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But I probably spun it to high and shifted at 5500 it seemed like it was plateauing off above 5k. Probably needs more than a 650 carb

    • @therealtech833
      @therealtech833 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dirtcheapmedia3390 I'm not saying you can't have a shift point higher than 5000. The motor is going to peak out horsepower where its going to peak, typically in a 403 or any Olds V8, without modification, this can be achieved in well under 6000 rpm. Also Oldsmobile motors, by factory design, are not made to have 'sustained' high RPM. That fact is not a criticism of using the motor, to the contrary, the torque curve starts early and is quite broad. The design makes a quite good daily driver experience even with some modifications. The webbed mains on a 403 are not an issue unless you plan on really pushing it hard, like sustained higher RPM, or some sort of boost, like Turbo, super charge or Nitrous. That's when it can be expensive, as the mains need girdles for reinforcement. The beauty of the 403 is it doesn't need all that to make good power.

    Quite doing toe taps on the gas it's hard in the bearings etc... What heads you got on it? ... The cam sounds good what do you have for camshaft... I have done the heads up on my 330 getting 75 horsepower out of them... The center e ports where their bolt onto the headers that little indent weld it so there is no indent there. . That is up to 15 horsepower right there... And if it is just a drag car then block off under the intake exhaust ports to keep the carb cold and remove the exhaust balance port in the intake.

    • @dirtcheapmedia3390
      @dirtcheapmedia3390  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The toe taps were to keep the engine from dying as it is colder than it appeared. if I remember correctly it was 45-55 in those videos. Both the 350 heads were stock as well as the 403 heads. however I have a set of 350 heads ported, larger valves, and exhaust divider and roller rockers. I will install them money permitting. Thanks for the watch 👍

      @@dirtcheapmedia3390 sounds good if you pick up some heavy duty aluminum foil and stuff in the intake exhaust crossover system and block it off it helps as well I did that with my F heads on my '70 W-30 I got it to run into 12:60's @ 103 mph not bad for for mostly factory put stick grind camshaft 328 duration from the 308 that is a good small block grind Holly 650 dubble pumper spread bore carburetor19054017278 and creager hot-pipes headers and 28" slicks ..
      My 'C' heads I blocked off the center exhaust ports going under the manifold totally... I melted aluminum and pored into that area using clay to help shape the port the way I wanted and blocked both sides of the Siamese center exhaust ports from going under the intake manifold then regrind the bowl shaped to match the rest .. and with a little messaging on all the ports and balance and squared up the block and aline hone got close to 525 horse power .. I remember reading an article from Joe Mondelo years ago I think I still have it in the shop that you can get 100 horse power from a good set of olds heads.. but you will need to pot in push rod sleeves and this walls are thin that is drag racing only ... I'm pretty sure I got about 75 on mine... Same with my 330 small block number 4 heads with the big 455 valves and prepared the same way the nice thing about the 67 motors is the forged crankshaft my 330 small block was a 320 horse to start with and my 425 I picked up was a 365 horse ... I found a set of "C" heads and did them up I did not want to damage my W-30 455 or transmission along with rear end I found others back in the '70's-'80's parts cars I took the 2-speed transmission from my small block and put the Tork converter on the big block and put it up to a 66 Buick 400 turbo short shaft a guy gave me years ago both switch pitch converters rewired the switch inside the car to the shifter and got a high stall if 3300 & low of 2600 APX. So taking off it was in high then once I got moving I swapped it into low in the Tork range . All kids if little tricks back then to make horsepower in those olds motor's...

      No not yet the cam/headers/intake was a big improvement. The heads will help for sure but the engine has next to no oil pressure once it reaches operating temp(like 6-7psj at idol) so I’m going to pull it and get new bearings for the engine

      I hate to hear that about the oil pressure. Why is it low? I’ve got an RPM intake and shorty headers. I’m not so sure about a cam with stock heads. I’m not trying to build a racer but something that could get my 83 Cutlass moving

      @@BigGeorge3397 The 403 in factory form only had a 7.9:1 compression ratio. Due to this putting in a bigger cam may not only have diminishing returns, if you go to big without a compression boost it actually could reduce torque without much horsepower gain. webbed mains on the 403 are only an issue when trying to exceed 600hp, 6000+ rpm or any type of boost. The block is still a high strength steel that is good for plenty of power without modification if the above criteria are followed. There are plenty of other blocks, cranks, etc. to build a super-high performance motor. The 403 will cost quite a bit more to get 600+ hp and 7500 rpms, but for most people the huge torque output of the motor with mild upgrades, mostly compression boost, make a big difference and a respectable reliable motor for good times.
