      I had the same trans am with those stock gears and I couldn’t even do a brake stand. It was awful but I did drive it from Massachusetts to Florida, and cruising at 75 mph I got 21 mpg. It was a complete dog though but a lot of guys that have these fine tune the qjet with bigger jets and rods, recurve the distributor, and throw real dual exhaust on and run these numbers. I’d take a 400 Pontiac that was in my other trans am over a 403 anyday though

      @@danhoyland142absolutely, they de-cat, are allowed an overbore, are allowed up to 1.5:1 more compression, they clean up the heads, intakes, manifolds and work the Q-jet, they probably work the TH350 and use a small converter too, might even use limited travel lifter, longer pushrods, slightly over spec rocker ratio with a factory rocker, blueprint, balance and science the combo out to the bleeding edge of what can be called factory stock.I'm sure...I have a feeling that if my friend Dallas Brown did that much science on that Buick 350 it would have been significantly quicker, I think the times it turned in were only a couple tenths better than a car off the showroom floor with the carb and timing optimized.

      @@hendo337you're right that they're able to tweak the cars in those ways, but I think you're wrong on why the results were what they were. That Buick is most likely tweaked as much as the TA. The weight of the cars is pretty much the same, both are low compression motors. The Buick has a half step more compression and a way better rear end gear ratio for the quarter mile but the TA engine has 50 more cubic inches. The results make sense.

    I had a brown and gold T/A in the mid-80s with the exact same stock drivetrain. Looked nice with Center Line wheels, tinted windows and of course, louvers on the back glass. LOL It ran about the same as this one stock, but a rebuild of the 403 Olds with compression increase, Edelbrock Performer intake, headers with duals, rebuilt and modified Q-jet and high volume fuel pump helped. With new 3.42 gears, traction bars and a rebuilt trans with shift kit I was into the 13s. Not too bad for a smog-era heavyweight but certainly no rocket. Still, I would love to own it these days as it was a super fun car to drive. Great memories.

    All “TA 6.6“ 400 Pontiac engines in 1979 were actually stockpiled 1978 engines. They installed exactly 10,000 of these in both Trans Ams and formulas in 1979. And they were all 4-speeds, no automatics

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Not 10,000 of them, only 8,326 of them in Trans Ams that year. 2,917 of them were T-top non-SE cars, 2,485 were hardtop non-SE cars, 1,107 RPO code Y84 Black SE cars, 1,817 RPO code Y89 10th Anniversary cars, and about 346 Firebird Formulas. I'm not a GM guy, but i thought the 4 Speed Trans Ams had a Pontiac 400, and all the Automatic Trans Ams had a Oldsmobile 403. And i believe the Pontiac 400 Engine was the more desirable outta the two.

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@johndillinger8482 That is incorrect. What you probably saw were 301 Pontiac "L37" VIN code "W" engines which look close to the 400 because Pontiac did not have a small and big block V8 engine. 1979 Pontiac 400 engines were only paired with the Borg Warner Super T-10. The 301 in 1979 could be had with an ST-10 or an automatic. The 403 was only paired with the TH350. In 1978, you could get a 400 with either the automatic TH350 or a BW ST-10, but not in 1979.

To give you an idea, my 74 Charger Rallye 440 with the torqueflite and the optional 3.55s ran 15.0 at 92 out of the box. Identical to the TA. @@hendo337 You are preaching to the converted. This type of racing can pit an off the street car against literally an NHRA Stock competitive car sans the 9 inch slicks. Actually in PSDR rules you can go 70 overbore, so on a 350 you are getting a 362 cubic inch engine. Add the extra 1.5 compression and a super (not your local speed shop balancing and blueprinting) but a meticulous precision B and B. You can run aftermarket pistons too. Factory parts could be out of spec as much as 10%! You add all this up and a 340 Duster 4 speed is putting the boots to your big block 442.

Had to replace the engine though as a previous owner left the car outside in the winter with no antifreeze and cracked the block and one of the heads. So no numbers matching for me now. It's a fun car to drive. I upped the compression to 9-1 put a mild cam with roller tip rockers & headers. Have not run the qtr. mile with it yet. Hoping for mid to low 13s when I do though.

    Anyone who's done any legitimate drag racing, at a real drag strip such as this, can tell exactly what's happening here.
    For those that may not be real familiar with the details, let me explain it to you.
    1.) The driver of the Buick, is the better of the two drivers. Drag racing very often boils down to your response time at the green light. Clearly, the Buick driver is much more proficient and has better start times. (Except the one light he blew, which anyone can do once)
    2. By looking at the quarter mile elapsed times, and miles per hour, you can see what exactly is happening. The Buick, with its smaller 350ci engine and lower ratio rear end, and good driver, is running very consistent times. The car is topping out near the end od the quarter mile.
    3. The Trans Am, in complete contrast to the Buick's small block 350, has a big block motor and higher ratio rear end. When both cars are at about 3/4th's down the strip, and the Buick is topping out, the big block in the Trans Am with its low ratio rear end, is finally starting to build its motor revs and is beginning to pull stronger and stronger. This is why even though the elapsed times on both cars at the end of the quarter mile are extremely close, BUT the speed in miles per hour of the cars is very different. The Trans Am is traveling much faster than the Buick at the races finish line, because its just getting spooled up and building speed.
    Many people falsly believe that drag racing is boring, is easy, and any dummy can do it as good as the next one. But thats not true. All these variables play into which car will win, and again, very often the race is won or lost, right at the green light when you're staged up and ready to go. Response time is key. Throttle management is To much throttle, and spin the tires to much? You lose the race. Not enough throttle, or a blink of an eye hesitation out of the gate? You lose the race.
    All that said,I raced all my street cars for years on Wednesday nights, amateur night at a local drag strip near where I grew up. Its a LOT of fun, and its great to see the changes in performance as you add and subtract small items and performance items on your vehicles. And you NEVER know who's going to be put in that lane next to you to face off down the strip. Which brings back one funny memory of hundreds. The time I was running my Monte Carlo 455, that ran high 14's, and I got smoked, left in the dust by this old man driving his 1970 or 1971 Ford Country Squire station wagon, wood grain down the sides, chrome roof rack etc., and he ran like a 13.9!! Lol Unbelievable. Well, not really since some of the cars you see there will really shock you, but what a blast.
    Or, the time I was up against an alcohol funny car, I was in my Grand National running high 13's. We were bracket racing. I got the green and was all the way down the strip, almost at the finish line, when my opponent the alcohol funny car finally got his green light to GO.
    Lol I felt like I could have reached out and almost touched the finish line, just when he was able to start the race. Then I heard the roar, felt my car shake, and watched in utter amazement as he passed me and crossed the finish line before I did. He had run roughly a 7 second quarter mile. That's whats called "Bracket Racing'.
    It's all really a lot if fun if you enjoy cars, and enjoy racing them. I highly suggest everyone tries it at least once. I raced amateur like this for a number of years, every week, and had the time of my life.
    PS. My buddy got me into it, he ran the same car for years, while I was always buying different ones, and modifying them.
    He ran a 1971 Buick GS stage 1. He had done a lot to it, but he was running 13's in that car with the 455. Very impressive.
    What really got hom the worst was when my brand new Grand National, V6, was running 13's and was just as fast as his Stage 1. All the work he had done etc., and my was a brand nee car off the showroom floor, and just as fast. He passed away now, but he talked about that for almost 30 years!! Lol
    👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
    Thanks for sharing.

    Sorry but no totally stock L78 400 Pontiac or the Olds , 403 runs high 14's . Especially with a 2.41 axle . I owned several F- body cars from 82 to 91 . One was a 77 T/A with auto trans, and the 2.41 safety track rear. This car I replaced the smog L78 for a 69 Ram Air III 400 from a GTO. I had to make my own engine mounts as the 69 engine only had bosses for the Lemans body or big Pontiacs . Later blocks had bosses for both the F body and bigger cars. I ended up replacing the stock rear with a 3.73 unit drum to drum.
    My second 77 T/A was a Y82 Hurst hatch special edition. It came with the optional 3.23 axle . In 78 they went to the 3.42 axle. In 1990 I bought a 80 Z28 with the LM1 and 4 speed. It had the 3.42 axle .
    Both my friends had 78 T/A's with the W72 400. One had the 4 speed the other had an auto trans. 77 and 78 you could get the optional W72 with the auto trans. You could only get a manual with the W72 in 77 and 78. In 79 you could get a manual with the 301. I had a friend who's dad bought a black and gold special edition in 79 with this combo .
