  • Join a conversation with author and researcher Gretchen Newberry as she takes us into the hidden world of the Common Nighthawk. Neither a hawk or even nocturnal, this unusual bird is most active at dawn and dusk, eats insects on the wing with its cavernous mouth agape, and nests on bare ground and rooftops in both urban and rural areas. Gretchen will share her research journey and conservation strategies for this poorly-understood species whose populations-like those of many birds which eat insects-are on the decline.

This was so surreal- I had my patio door open and could hear the nighthawk outside and was listening simultaneously to your recording- Stereo!!!

Thank you so much for the information on common nighthawks I never knew they were rooftop dwellers

Thank you so much for posting these, I always want to be at every one but can't. They are wonderful, but also full of revelations on how little we really know about birds. I really miss them, their call meant: summer to me. We'd see them on the forest roads at night while hunting snakes (for herpetology research), I now wonder (with horror) if they were nesting on the road.

I was driving my motorcycle on a dirt road at night on the border between New Mexico and Texas in the Chihuahua desert a while back. I was driving north out of Dell City, Texas, headed for Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Nighthawks were flying in and out of my headlight, catching insects that were attracted to the light. Since I was on a very rocky dirt road, I was driving pretty slowly, taking my time to be safe. I was several hundred miles from any significant light pollution, and the sky was completely dark and moonless; the milky way spread across the expanse of darkness above me. It was a hot night and I had my motorcycle jacket halfway unzipped. The nighthawks flew in and out of the headlight beam, acrobatically catching insects. There were so many of them. One of the birds flew into my open jacket, getting caught inside. I stopped my bike, turned it off and reached into my coat. I held the bird for a few seconds in my hands, listening to the silence of the night, then I let the bird go and it flew silently off. Native American lore says that the nighthawk is an intermediary between the living and the dead, a messenger from the spirit world. I tend to agree.

Just got around to watching this. I really enjoyed it. Solidly informative. Also have to point out that at around 1:01:00 into the video the Close Captioning translated Cornell Labs into Porno Labs which was a fun chuckle at the end.

Interesting talk. Would love to see photo or video of nighthawks nesting on the ground in a prairie - in terms of surrounding vegetation, rural vs urban setting, ground substrate, etc.

Look for large areas of open gravel with little vegetation, often found on hilltops. This is why gravel rooftops are such attractive spots.

In Venezuela they are known as aguaitacamino. Chotacabras in Iberian Spanish. I really don't appreciate the political message at the beginning of the stream, rightful or not, it's not the place.

What political message ? She litterally just mentionned the existence of the first nations of the land they are based on. And even though I personally don't really see the link between that and the research presented, I understand even less how someone can be bothered or offended by such a harmless statement.
And I think that if you had " native american " heritage, you would feel very different about all this and probably be somewhat moved by someone mentionning your ancestors' plight.
