RiP in Norman Lear. I'm only 23 but I'm so glad I got to appreciate his work before he passed. All in the family legitimately is my favorite show and still relevant today

In 1977, African American screenwriter Eric Monte filed a lawsuit accusing ABC and CBS producers Norman Lear, Bud Yorkin, and others of stealing his ideas for Good Times, The Jeffersons, and What's Happening!!

You’re just not going win trolling this one. The good and important far outweighs the problematic here. So many other white show runners at the time were not willing to portray black people and women the way Norman Lear did: full human beings, proud men, family oriented people, parents who care about their children, respectable businessmen, poor and middle class, women who just so happened to have had abortions. Important representations.

It was open knowledge among screenwriters not to talk about their ideas in front of Norman Lear. I heard this from direct sources in the business, many years ago.
