- Rob Reiner joins Chris Hayes to discuss Norman Lear’s legacy. “He wanted to give people a chance to see both sides, to have the discussion, and then talk about it,” says Reiner. “If you wanted to watch the show, you had to watch it when it was on. 40-45 million people every week had a shared experience and we talked about the issues. We’re so fractured and we don’t really get to talk to each other.”

Lear was the MOST important TV producer to have ever lived...how much poorer we would have been without him. RIP Norman
Agreed 💯
Concur. He helped raise myself and my parents. 💜
What a joke!
@@motophone8794 joke about what???
Yes, and a humanitarian and an activist!
Our dear Mel Brooks is our last cherished comic genius left standing.
Spot on! 'Frau Blucher, Nayyyyyyyyyyyyyy, Blucher!', Marty Feldman as I-gore, Young Frankenstein
Albert Brooks is still alive, as well
Clearly not as old
They are geniuses
Let's us not forget the real genius of geniuses: Allen Konigsberg (aka Woody Allen)
Norman Lear was a genius. An American Treasure.
When Carroll O'Connor passed away in 2001, I was living in LA. Remembering what a unique impact ALL IN THE FAMILY had on my young mind, I felt, out of respect, I should go to his funeral. It was in West LA near the Mormon Temple. The church was packed but I went in. Thank you, Mr. O'Connor.
I saw the footage, I felt for Sally and Rob. I read Carroll was like a second dad or uncle to Sally back then. Some fans felt he never got over his son's suicide. I liked In The Heat of The Night too. Listening to an elder Rob, it felt like flashbacks of Mike from the show.
@cocoaorange1 Carroll's biggest support when Hugh committed suicide was his neighbor Marlon Brando. Marlon drew his support from the tragedies of his daughter committing suicide after the murder of her lover by her brother. All so shocking and sad.
Thanks for your insight into Norman Lear Rob! You yourself are an absolute legendary film maker and I thank you both for the great use of your platforms 🙏
What a great interview.

Great tribute from Rob. Hard to imagine what TV would have been like when I was growing up without Norman Lear. Rest in peace, sir. Well done.
My Dad was very conservative, and loved All in the Family. But he was an old school conservative who was raised to be civil, and always counseled my sister and me "Don't go to bed angry", because though he would vehemently disagree with someone's views. he would never hate them for them. Maybe it's from being thrown into the maelstrom of WWII, where you were cheek to cheek with people who had completely different views, but shared a common cause - the defense of our country. The show was effective, too, because it mellowed him a lot, I believe, during those difficult times, and presented themes and views that the news was unable to. Norman Lear was a true hero, not only in battle, but in character and influence, and we'll probably never know how much we really owe to him. Let's hope that the rot that disappointed him so much dies and is cut out of our society.
Your dad sounds a lot like me. Sad times we live in but there’s always hope
How VERY beautifully written and I couldn't possibly agree with you more!
Today liberals won’t defend Americans and our values as in the World War 2 era, big difference
When you say "old school conservative", are you talking about Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush? And what about the rot within modern liberalism?
@@Inquisitor5874 I would say someone who can listen to the other side and maintain relationships with those who differ . Pretty much the opposite of todays liberals and leftists
Chuck from OH. I lived in a small city in OH as 10 yr old during the 70s with my single parent mother remember watching all these shows Norman created with my mother always enjoyed the humor and the time with my mom . She's gone now since 1982 but I'll always have the memories watching these shows with my mom . Rest in peace the both of you . Chuck from OH.
My Ohio mom didn’t like this show - until she figured out Archie was being mocked for his limited outlook
@@maddymud yes and he was always put in his place . Educational show for everyone. Chuck from OH
A true television legend who pushed the envelope with the series he created. Thank you for all you have given to this world Mr Lear.
Rest in peace. A very full life lived to the fullest.
May his memory be a blessing... 🙏
It can't be overstated when it comes to this man's influence on American television. A bonafide innovator and game changer.
Carroll O'Connor was also a liberal. He gave an interview describing the Archie character as sympathetic because his limited understanding kept him from being happy.
O'Connor was a serious and soft spoken man, which makes his performance as Archie Bunker even more amazing. Won four Emmy's for the role, plus drama Emmy later on for In The Heat of the Night.
I Loved Archie ❤ You cannot liken "that former human who occupied the Whitehouse" to Archie Bunker.
I think that may be why my 70's era conservative dad loved Archie, because while Archie's malapropisms and misconceptions drew laughs, he was never portrayed as a mean or stupid person. He was opinionated and ignorant, and ignorance is not shameful if we are open to learning. What a genius Lear was, to write shows that were watchable by the family!
I have seen tributes from Conservatives to Lear praising a show like All in the Family obviously not getting anything that Lear stood for and against, thinking it was some Conservative sitcom because Archie was one and for many years I have seen idiots hail O'Connor as a Conservative hero yet he was 100% nothing like Archie and was very Liberal.
Carroll was also a History Teacher in Brooklyn, I heard, until the acting bug bit him! His best friend was Larry Hagman of I Dream Of Jeanie and Dallas fame. Carroll was such a great actor, and interesting man! I watched All In The Family with my parents and my brother when I was a child, and mom would make popcorn, and we loved it so much! We might have loved Archie and his funny faces ( LOL, that is what you remember the most when you are that young, but we understood everything!) but we all became Liberals, and still are to this day. May genius Norman Lear RIP.
Great segment! Sorry for your loss Rob! To be continued...
I'll never forget when the Bunkers visited Mike and Gloria after the Stivics had moved to Los Angeles and Archie says, "You know what, Edith? We done [sic] all right for a son-in-law." The man had come full circle in a wholly believable transformation!
God Bless Norman Lear, he was such a wonderful man. Thank you Rob for always fighting the good fight for our country. Also, thank you for all of your wonderful films. ❤
A legend. And a wonderful human being.
Both very great Men Rob & Norman ❤
I know more about Rob and his wonderful dad than I did about Norman Lear...but now I love Norman as much as I do Rob and Carl. Great thanks to Rob, and a terrific job done here by Chris Hayes!
My heart goes out to his family, friends and loved ones❤
I'm so glad to see Rob Reiner.
His shows were like school to me. They helped me understand the issues of the time and make sense of it all. I was 14yrs old. Time has passed (50 years!) and the issues persist.
Norman Lear knew about everyday real people. He saw the problems and made funny of it. They had a lot of Archie Bunkers in his day. But today they are different. Norman Lear was a very good writer. And he made people laugh no matter how bad it got.
You can hear the emotion in Rob Reiner's voice as he speaks of today's political climate, and of Mr. Lear's contributions. Very moving.
Big fan of the great Norman Lear and a big fan of rob Reiner. Thanks for all you do and did… 🙏🏽❤️🇺🇸
I had no idea that he was a war hero. My grandfather flew a troop glider on D-Day. Men beyond today's yet from long ago. 💜
💙💙💙
I hope love for our country comes back. We don’t need Trump back in the White House. Truth and Justice can prevail. God bless America.
Amen
He’s all our childhood! We all owe him our television childhoods up to our adult life … thank you Mr. Norman Lear ❤️
I love Norman Lear for his tv work, his political activism, & his service during WW2. Brilliant man.
I’m always willing to listen to Rob Reiner. He’s brilliant in his own right.
Thank you Norman Lear for using comedy to bring a light handed view to people’s differences, and common ground to all. RIO ❤
Some of my favorite movies portrayed on the wall behind Rob Reiner. What an icon in his own right. Normal Lear really opened our eyes to different ideas and mindsets. He influenced so many and because of him we are very blessed with some of the best movies and TV again influenced by his projects.
Norman found a real meat head.
RIP mr Lear you have given us so much ,you will always be remembered as a true genius
Thanks, Rob!! You are so right We cannot let Donald Trump back in the WH!! Democracy First! 🇺🇲🗽
I am 64 years old and the positive impact that the work of Norman Lear had on myself, my family and those I grew up with cannot be fully measured. He at once, taught us realism regarding the world around us, the dignity of every person we could meet and how to move forward and make our way towards love for each other with humor and good will.
I honor the memory of Norman Lear and wish him peace everlasting.
His Legacy will go on if we all us our vote. If we don't who knows how the country will go. Thanks for having Rob Reiner on. His dad was wonderful, too. My dad was a lot like Archie, and he was a liberal, too.
When you see this as a senior. . . It's difficult to have hope but we still do want democracy!
thanks for the memories!..A true talent. RIP Mr. Lear.
Love Rob Reiner. He lives Norman Lear's ideals. And he's contributing, along with other influential people in the arts, e. g., Taylor Swift, to the clarion call to save our democracy.
I think you meant to type Norman Lear's ideals.
Rest well Norman Lear and thank you Rob Reiner for your intellegent words. We need to hear the truth these days and let all Americans have a voice.
His sitcoms made you think and laugh. Rest easy Norman🇺🇸
They all stayed with us everyday ❤ i miss Carl, too. Good long lives. Love you all.
Rob Reiner is an individual who is beloved to me
Oh man, I loved Norman Lear -- what a special human being. I'm so happy we had him for as long as we did, but dang.... I'm not ready to let him go. Thanks for the memories, Mr. Lear -- you will be missed.
Chis: I only have one thing I need to disagree with you about in this piece-- I don't know anyone who aspired to be like Archie Bunker, while the show was running. Archie and what came out of his mouth was there for the shock value that woke us up, that taught all of us a thing or two while he was at it. It's was all so brilliant and I can't imagine such brilliance will ever visit us again. The timing of it all..... perfection.
Archie Bunker was my dad 🥴 😁
To this day when you say that someone is a Archie Bunker type, anyone who has ever watched that show knows exactly about the type of person you are talking about
@@lightwillprevail God bless him :)
My dad wasn't him, but I grew up in an era where Archie Bunker guys could be found everywhere. Most weren't as blatant as Archie, but some never learned. Still and all, I never knew any who aspired to be Archie or thought he had a cool factor. That was my only real point. :)
The shock value of that show allowed it to be a fabulous teacher, a vehicle to bring an awareness of so sooooo many things we'd grown up with that needed some rethinking. Even the Archies who actually watched the show eventually picked up on the fact that some of their beliefs were wrong-headed, though I doubt they'd ever admit it. Some never learned, but most (in my central California world) figured some of it out before they passed on. :)
@@charlesritt5088 That's the absolute truth of it. God Bless Norman Lear :)
My father loved Archie Bunker and agreed with him. I was on the side of Mike & Gloria. And honestly, if it wasn’t for this show and these characters, because my family didn’t go to the theatre, I might not have been a democrat. My father was a real narcissist and strict republican. I wasn’t allowed to do anything. And I don’t recall ever seeing characters like Mike or Lionel or Gloria again. The eighties gave us stupidity.
Thank you, Norman Lear. Thank you, Rob Reiner!
One of Lear's gifts was his ability to recognise great situation comedy in other countries, and then adapt them to fit the American culture. All in the Family was the originally British sitcom Till Death Us Do Part, just with a US accent and American meme characters. Sanford & Son was the earlier British sitcom Steptoe & Son, but set in a US muticultural inner city, rather than a 50s English city. Lear was a true comedy genius. Bob Newhart is now the only remaining US comic genius of that golden age.
Rest in PEACE Norman Lear! A true American and hero who fought the good fight!
Thank you Mr. lear❤ one of my favorite movies Princess Bride 🎉 blessings to your family and friends ❤
Mr. Lear was a True American. Mr. Reiner is correct in saying we have three parties, Democrats, Republicans & Trump’s Fascist MAGA group. R.I.P. Norman Lear. 🙏🏽💕🇺🇸💕🙏🏽
Thank you, Mr. Reiner, for speaking the truth about our nation's current political climate - just like Mr. Lear and Archie and company did a half century ago
RIP, Norman Lear 🕯️
I loved All in the Family when I was a young soldier during Vietnam.
Thank you Rob.
Every night it was on my family and I would watch "All in the Family" and laugh our butts off at the funny stuff and sniff tears when it was serious. hard to believe it was a mid-season replacement. Such a great show. One of the best ever on American television. Even (most of) the spin-offs of "All in the Family" were great (and it had more than any other if I remember correctly).
A wonderful creative American.
Very sweet sentiments 😢
So Right ! 👍🕊️

Thank you Rob for alerting the American people on the perilous state we are facing if Trump returns to the WH.
IF? 😂😂😂😂 this is MAGA COUNTRY
Yeah, we have to suffer through better gas prices, a thriving economy, and not funding all that climate change, transgender bullcrap.

awesome man!
Rob is a good director! I like his film This is Spinal Tap funny!😅
1 of the best ever 🎉
Sorry for your loss and ours. He lived 101 years, not many can do that!
I have mixed feelings about this interview. On the one hand, it was supposed to be about the life and legacy of Norman Lear, but it also became a platform to go after Trump. That goes to show just how much of a threat the man is. So I understand why it happened and Reiner is certainly very passionate about his politics. But at the same time, a part of me wishes I could have just listened to an interview about Norman Lear and forget Trump for 5 to 10 minutes. Actually, I'd like to forget Trump ever existed. The only bright side to Trump is that (hopefully) the backlash is so great that he loses in 2024 and then our government passes laws to strengthen our institutions so that a man like Trump gets stopped in his tracks much sooner. And good luck with that while MAGA still exists.
I felt the same way. I thought he was going to talk about his former show and other projects.
I’m sick to death of trump and his antics. I do think speaking out against him and fascism important. Rob Reiner doesn’t
speak on a national news show everyday. I think fighting to save our democracy is a perfect tribute to Norman Lear.
Rest in peace Mr. Lear.
To be continued......
Thanks For All The Great Tv Shows,Mr Norman Lear, You Will Be Missed,May You R.I.P😢

Frank Zappa, Carlin and Lear and many . Lear got to see this Trump stuff..Carlin and Zappa didnt get to see 2016..
I hope to meet you some day Rob.
His book was really great
Highly recommended
I love you Rob Reiner and I thank you for sharing you political views with which I agree 100%.
Lolololol. Expert level trolling.
R.I.P. Mr.Lear😢
Rob is correct.
Rob is WRONG!
"We can choose fascism or democracy..." Well said.
It's not about fascism or democracy, it's about capitalism and freedom versus communism and tyranny. That's really what is at stake here.
Opposing Trump has created a common terrain for many Americans.
Unfortunately, so has supporting him.
You are so very brainwashed.
Not all television was stupid, but his programs made people think. But, Archie Bunker seemed to grow and to learn as the show progressed. That's the way I remember it. All In The Family paved the way for MASH.
I was there with the 40 some odd million. Good stuff.
My fathers name was Norman his people were from Poland and many perished in the death camps of the fascists .Norman Lear had the rare gift to make us take a hard look at ourselves through the mirror of comedy and it worked . My father fortunately survived the jungles of Okinawa to save democracy in WW11 He would be beside himself if he knew how close we are to allowing one man to destroy it.
World War II =2 1+1=2
My generation of television I was born in 1972 and that was a fun time the fashion, the clothes, the television, the music, the movies, dance television in soul train all you can think of, and good television to rest in in peace to one of the pioneers🙏🏿
RIP - thank you for your service.
I'm 66 years old and as a child I even knew that Archie Bunker's racism was being made fun of. Although I highly doubt there were many who "celebrated Archie Bunker's racism" there are always a few who aren't intelligent enough to get satire. I even got it as a child.
Leave it to Beaver the Donna Reed Show Father Knows Best and other shows of the time were great entertainment. What Norman Lear did was to bring real life American life of ordinary people to the situation comedy landscape and changed it forever. 😊❤
My father-in-law was an Archie Bunker conservative. He saw Archie as television embracing him directly. He was a man who variously, drove a bread truck, had a restaurant that failed, and eventually ended up as a stockbroker via a friend who took pity on him. And all the while, he blamed his failures on minorities. He hated Jews -- until his son married one (me) and then he gave me credit for his son becoming an adult. He hated Black people -- until the end of his life when he was cared for in the hospital by Black nurses, who told us how "charming" he was, and they meant it. But he would have happily voted for Donald Trump, and he never really got that while Archie Bunker was deftly written to be the "lovable racist," he was still a buffoon.
Norman Lear took and death do us part and turned it into All in the family. He also took steptoe and son and turned it into Sanford and son. Both British comedies.
Thank you Rob (Meathead) Reiner
loved this show
Many thanks to Chris & Rob. 💐
Soooooo we’re just not gonna talk about how he robbed some INCREDIBLY talented & well deserving Black folks out of any lasting monetary recognition for their contributions to his empire? We’re just gonna pretend he wasn’t a greedy guy who took advantage of good people cause he had a couple of funny’s?
👌🏾
Right on, Rob!
So happy to see Rob Reiner sharing what great attempts were made at balancing social and political ideology. It’s true we lack the cohesiveness that we once had when we shared a gathering time to watch a favorite show on our family’s television. So appreciate Rob’s voice in these arduous times. He is a gem. Thanks Chris.
Why they call him meathead even today after all the years gone by. Liberalism is truly a mental disease
I love Norman Lear and Rob Reiner...Reiner looks great, btw, and looks so much like his dad. Lear was a television icon - Reiner's tribute was moving and loving, but wish we wouldn't mention Tr*mp all the time, he doesn't deserve to be centered in all of our conversations
He should said to the woman coughing 'Edith would you stifle?'
