  • TV legend Norman Lear, whose credits include such hit series as "All in the Family" and "Maude," always managed to make audiences laugh about dangerous topics: Racism, sexism, bigotry, homophobia. And today, at age 100, he's determined to find out if we'll still laugh together. He sits down with "Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel to discuss his upcoming projects, including a possible remake of one of the most controversial sitcom episodes of all time.

5:40 and on --- He says exactly what needs to be said. The 21st century is all about form and no substance. It's about the right "words" or having a department that responds to what people should already know by now. Norman Lear is what progress is all about and the changes he made to society in the 70's was, well.....he single handedly changed my generation and many of our parents. The problem is that we lost sight of it and have gone backwards since the mid 80's.
Making progress takes real WORK and no one does that anymore.

Its sad that young people today who watch these shows don't realize just HOW controversial some of these topics were 45/50 years ago. The fact that his shows were the very first to even MENTION them let alone deal with them is in itself a feat.
Its like I Love Lucy was the first sitcom to actually have a pregnant wife on the show and show Ricky and Lucy sleeping in the same bed (it was actually 2 twin beds pushed together to get by the censors). To my parents generation, that was shocking. And it would never have been allowed if they weren't married in real life.

Don't misunderstand me. It's impossible not to respect Norman Lear. He deserves every accolade. I pretty much share his politics. Yet I was never entertained by his shows. They were cast by actors of great talent, but I felt the writing was heavy handed. Fortunately, most of the viewership felt otherwise.

Norman created a beautiful thing. These situations are in American's minds and whether you like it or not people do consider abortion a lot more than spoken about. TV helps us when Adults fail to. We do what we can with what we get in life. That all we can do sometimes.

I know that I’m listening to this segment so differently than most anyone else.
“What is a Peapod Center” is searchable on TH-cam and will bring you to a 30 minute video that explains. But the hope is to create a socially responsible cultural social media platform that has a unique characteristic no other social media platform/or media outlet has.

There is no way you could make television shows today like "All in the Family" or "The Jeffersons" because the writing would offend someone and they would boycott the networks.
