I catered a Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Dinner at the Johnstown Memorial Arena in the mid 1980s ......we set up in Street clothes, then put on our Monkey Suits to Serve, so we dressed in the locker rooms. there were photos of the movie production all over the Arena, and the Zamboni Driver was still on the Crew. The Stories we heard! We were based in Pittsburgh, so this was like a Mini Road trip.....the Johnstown Crew helped us cleanup, and pack up our Caravan of trucks filled with dirty dishes and Pans and Banquet Supplies.....about 1:30 in the morning. A very favorite memory in my life......I was just a pickup Hockey player, but went on to play College Hockey, and didn't stop til I was 45
Newman actually got hurt, during the fight with the goalie scene... So did the guy playing goalie... definitely physical comedy... also Newman could skate pretty well... who knew?
I love the commentary with the Hansons for this scene: "Clean hook. Clean slash, making a play for the puck. Clean goalie interference. Clean intent to injure. All very clean."
What so many people get confused about, "old time hockey" - when Newman's character says they're going to go out and play "old time hockey," he means clean hockey - none of the goonery. He wanted to play the final game clean without all the violence that the Chiefs had become infamous for. So, "old time hockey" isn't the Hansons busting heads - it's the exact opposite.

Canada was missing their #1 goalies and maybe had one player present at the worlds who would make their olympic team, maybe. You had: your #1 goalie, #1 center, #2 defensemen along with many other players that can easily make your olympic team: Nylander, Landeskog, Rask, Soderberg, Lindholm, OEL. You should not be complaining about a dive when you had way better players present on your team.
I saw the Bruins vs Flyers in Philly, a preseason game, with 3 hours of fighting, 3 bench cleaners, it takes 10 min for everyone to find their gloves,sticks after a brawl
I met the three of them back in the 90s when they were doing a bar tour. Really nice and friendly guys. I still have the autographed picture that they were handing out to everyone.

Hockey was an exotic, foreign sport to us in Philadelphia in the early 70's, a very ethnic industrial Eastern port city. Then the Flyers were brought to our town and totally won us all over, I like to think the early 70's Broad Street Bullies were the inspiration for this.

I remember this so well and how they used some of our players #12 of the Broome Blades is Frank Hamill of the Dusters (he wore #7 for us). He also visited me when I was in the hospital for surgery (I was 12, he was dating one of nurses on the Pediatric unit). Really really made my day today...

I grew up in NY and played jr hockey my Dad played in adult amateur league. 70's was the heyday of the Flyers and the Islanders. The Hanson bros made us laugh then and they're STILL funny.

I played hockey for 20 years and we used to go to play midnight hockey they would open the ring for us specifically and the Zamboni was the only one even remotely sober and believe me it was a magic show
I was buying gas recently at a Valero truck stop in Monument, Colorado, when I spied a bus over at the truck pump islands with Charlestown Chiefs painted on the side. The bus was red and white, professionally painted. As I drove out, the driver of the bus was cleaning his windshield, and I rolled down my window and told him how great his bus looked, and how much I liked Slap Shot and the Chiefs. I never found out why he had his bus painted that way.

I was at a Juvenile league (late teens) road in Ontario game with a bunch of guys I knew. Took the bus with them. It was just like this. The referees called the game in the 2nd period.

@@meesalikeu They didn't get canceled, they got old. 😂 This movie came out 45 years ago. The youngest of the three is now 63 and the oldest 65.
I was at a Juvenile league (late teens) road in Ontario game with a bunch of guys I knew. Took the bus with them. It was just like this. The referees called the game in the 2nd period.
