It will never get old, I watch it at least once each year. Captured the love and passion of those who didn't make it to major league but still have hope but so few make it, the up and down of the season! Some of the fights turned real by enthusiasm and or old debts from unfinished fights. Georges Hill's stunned face when Hanson knocked a player in the scene when he turned the guy around. That player who provoked many fight situations but refused to drop the gloves. Broken nose as a result, he never came back! The fight in the public stands based when the 3 Carlson bros and Hanson did it from throw soft drink
As a young kid I worked as an usher and saw the movie 100+ times. Absolutely hilarious movie. Went on to actually play the game, but the best thing I ever did was take the original movie poster once it left the theater. Still have it framed 42 years later in my TV room.
@stripedshirts ...no,but was smart enough to get it professionally linen backed and framed...so it still looks perfect. I did meet Steve Carlson many times when he played for the Baltimore Skipjacks. Very nice man!
I just found this today. Absolutely enjoyed every minute of this. I was a teenager in the 70s, so I know how he feels about that time. It was absolutely the best time of life. Thanks for making this , it really hit a nerve.
You should have been on the ice against them. Google Gilles Bilodeau, Wally Weir, James Troy, Mike Busniak etc... from the Beauce Jaros, NAHL, NEVER lost a fight with Johnstown and parts of the movie were not Johnstown antics but taken from BEAUCE
This is great! What a humble and amazing guy. I met the three of them over 20 years ago at a bar called Rookies in Allentown, PA. Glad they’re still doing well.
Right - and they respect their game, their team and their city unlike in so many other pro sports today. Even the toughest enforcers are some of the best people you’d ever want to meet (off the ice, of course).
Years ago I was at this very rink where the interview was filmed for a meeting. I was asked to find the manager about an issue. I was pointed to Dave’s office. I’d seen the movie multiple times but had no clue Dave was living in the area. I walked in and there he sat. Very humble and nice man.
Wow!! This guy knows how to interview and Dave provided excellent insight into the world of professional hockey, as a player and acting a part in a move. Dude has no ego and I'm sure he would talk like that to anyone he met who had an interest in Slap Shot....one of the great sports classics of our time. Thanks guys!!!

Watched it on VHS with my friends. Sweden, mid 1980s. We were twelve years old. We loved the movie and laughed alot. Hanson Brothers made it the success.
Loved this interview. Slap Shot is one of my all time favorites. I was 19 and in college when the movie came out so I can relate the the era very well. I thought the movie was so funny when I first saw it and loved it back then. I met Jerry Houser who played Killer Carlson in a parking lot at a fireworks show in Southern California a few years ago. He thanked me for remembering the movie. Very nice man.
Perfect interview. The interviewer talks little unlike most interviews today where they always want to interrupt and add their 2 cents. This is how an interview should be.
Thank you for this great interview. I was only 10 years old when this movie came out, so I had to sneak in to see it. I immediately loved it and I've seen it hundreds of times. As a young hockey player, my game changed after seeing this movie and I tried to emulate the Hanson Brothers. This movie and the actors will always have a place in my heart. 40+ years later, I can definitely relate to Dave's comments about his body. Like Dave, I wouldn't have changed a thing. Hockey players are authentic great guys and one of many reasons why hockey is the greatest sport on Earth.

This is one of my favorite movies ever. And after seeing this interview, I like it even more. Dave did an excellent job, was very clear and succinct. I'm from Minnesota myself, so I especially enjoyed the Hanson brothers. I'll never forget when they got a chance to play in the movie, and reigned terror on the other team. This is maybe the best twist in any movie ever!
I grew up near Johnstown PA where this was filmed (fittingly The War Memorial). My mom drove there several days to sit in the stands to see Paul Newman. It is so much better knowing that they were all hockey players pretending to act and not actors pretending to skate.
fatboyrowing - A lot of the movie was filmed in Syracuse at the Onandaga County War Memorial. Living in Rochester, I was a big Amerks fan and hated the Syracuse Eagles at the time in the late 1970s. Well, we had this booster club trip to Syracuse one night. As the bus pulled into town close to the arena, some guys on board decided to drop trou and moon the locals. Gee, I wonder where they got that idea!
Loved the Hanson Brothers! Even today they are not far from top of mind awareness - sometimes when I have a problem I’ll think “ What would the Hanson’s do..?” Great interview - thanks!
For a hockey player and a goon, Dave is transparent and full of great experience that shines through his personality. He his not a average sport person, I think he does a real good job at having the whole picture of what cinema , concept and influence has on people. You clearly see he has culture, thank god for that, we always love people with a well balance mind and body. 🍻
Slap shot is still one of my favorite movies I Remeber watching that movie for the first time in a hotel room withe my team mates at a silver stick tournament in major atom . I also was very lucky to have had the opportunity and play as a enforcer in the late 80s in the old QMHL. Always wanted to be like them growing up.the good old hockey days are long gone .But I sure loved that era of hockey You guy were my heroes growing up thank you for all the great memories. 🍺😜👍
As a guy who grew up playing hockey around the time this was shot, it has always been my favorite movie since it was first released. As he said, more truth than fiction. A good buddy of mine played on the '80 Gold medal team then he went on to play for the NY Rangers, on an off night he was sitting a bar in CT and Paul Newman came in and started chatting it up with him. He said they had a great talk and Paul said he had never had more fun making a movie than he did with these guys because as hockey players they just treated him as one of the guys. Paul continued to stay in touch and attend weddings thru the years of his teammates. Best years of my life as well
Can we all agree that "SLAP SHOT" has one of the all time great SOUNDTRACKS in film history? It was a literal billboard of what was popular at the moment the movie was being shot...great, smart use of pop music.
Love this interview. Dave speaks so calmly and eloquently that I could keep listening to him The appeal of the characters the Hanson brothers is they play the game the way thugs would play it if they could get away with it. Maniac brothers who feed of each other, fear no one and don't take anything seriously.
you guys made my day. thank you Dave! I remember the very first time i saw Slapshot, I saw it again a few months ago, I gave seen it 30 times or more, love it, never get tired of it! Thanks for the memories! Jim from Minneapolis.
I know what I'm watching next, "SLAP SHOT!" I smiled through the entire video. Always love the behind the scenes stuff and this interview was amazing, never knew about most of the stuff Dave talked about.
I still love this film. It is one of the standout films of my youth. The Hansons were just mental and great characters. They just had to be true to life. I have watched Slapshot with my sons love and they love it too. We are from the UK and so never skated or played hockey but did plenty of contact sports so I can relate to it even so. Great fun and great entertainment.
The movie has not only staying power but grows in popularity because it was acted naturally, the best movies are ad libbed with the script as a guide and it's about real people that can be identified with.
I had no intention of watching an interview with Dave Hansen but after watching five minutes and grab me and watch the entire thing. What a fantastic interview and now that I am back in Pittsburgh he is one person I would love to get the chance to meet and get a photo op with him. Now he’s working as the director or general manager for the hockey center of Robert Morris University on Neville Island and that place keeps growing and growing. Keep it up Dave!
Saw this movie with my parents in the theatre when I was a kid playing hockey in California all those years ago. I showed it to my kids a couple years ago. Thank you Paul G. for the interview, and thank you Dave Hanson for the behind the scenes.
I was 19 when this movie came out, cracked me up, and I loved it from the get got! There was a guy on my swim team that totally could have been one of the Hansen brothers! Glasses, hair, and sideburns! Thanks for this interview!
Classic movie ahead of its time. You're wife's a Lesbian! Laughed my ass off. How can you not love it? To listen to one of the original Hansons is gold. To hear how they brought it off was great. Being themselves was the best thing the director did right and that led to one of the best sports movies in history, screw the critics. I loved the movie.
I met Steve Carlson when his son was playing for Elmira College years ago. It was so cool. No one paid any attention to him but I recognized him immediately. I didn’t make a big deal out of it but chatted with him through out the game about the game. So cool.
This film was just one of many that will always bring me back to the great old days of growing up. Being a huge hockey fan and player, my friends and I still to this day drop lines from the film like they are going out of style. My mother grew up not far from Johnstown Pa in Cambria County so the added bonus that the town scenes in the film remind me of our family trips out to PA to see my grandparents. Now I'm in the mood to watch the film, time to go and put on the foil. Thanks Dave for your epic contribution to this gem of a film and hope that you're doing well brother.
Dave seems like a great guy. I met Jerry Houser who played Killer Carlson in Burbank, CA at a 4th of July fireworks show and I recognized him and I said hi. He was a super nice guy and was happy he was recognized because the movie was over 40 years old. I was 20 when the movie came out and I loved this movie and is one of my all time favorites.
I saw this at the drive-in at San Juan Capistrano, California, when it first came out. I loved this movie and still do - a very underrated work. George Roy Hill, better known for The Sting, created a wonderful movie here that remains unknown to many to this day.
Loved this movie, and this interview was great! To answer the question of why the movie has such resonance these many years later, it’s because of the “trueness” of the actual actors who really lived that life.
The real art of the interview is getting out of the way... we hardly notice that you are interviewing Dave... it's like he's doing a freeflow talk with all of us! One of the best interviews I've ever watched! Subscribed! p.s. Dave is living legend!
What a great interview, thank you!!! On one beer league team that I was on, we constantly recited many of the lines from "Slap Shot". We all knew the lines, crazy! Thank you, Dave Hanson!
This movie ages like wine. Its a breath of fresh air and reminder of how awesome the world was back in the day every time I watch it. I believe Star wars came out shortly after this too
Grew up in the 70’s wouldn’t change it for all the iPhones in the world! Best sports movie ever, Paul Newman & The Hanson brothers what a line up! 🇨🇦 🏒 🥅
The car race track scene..comment... 17:20,,, these guys in the movie were 21, 22 yrs old...my son played college baseball...in today's age, it is all video games, 1970's, slot cars.....that is soooo spot on! Classic!
Saw this in 77. One of my all time favourites. The funniest bit for me if I had to pick one was when the Hansons are arrested and they are told by the Police that they have the right to make one phone call. Well the immediate answer comes back from one of them "Hey, call the Pizza Man!!!!!" - absolutely priceless . I loved this film, read the book, and when I played sport (football in England) it somehow always struck a chord with me about how to live life in a way. If only they would show it on Netflix, and for a pick me up song when you're down then just whack on We Gotta Get Right Back. Thank you to everyone concerned in making this Movie. Loved the interview.
Haven't seen the film in a few years, but I can honestly say the only thing I remember is the Hanson brothers. No other plot lines other than Newman being manager/player. They are what everyone wants to see. Great interview.
There was something so raw and real about the characters in Slap Shot that resonated. I am sure the filmmakers saw this and is why they offered the Hanson Bros a contract.
One of the best sports films ever made, still holds up!
n⁷.
It will never get old, I watch it at least once each year. Dave's a mess
It is a classic but it could not be made today
I'm glad they used real hockey players, bc their ability to skate really made the scenes believable and authentic.
That's usually the case.
What a great interviewer and it is impressive to see how well spoken Dave Hanson is.
Yeah... thoughtful, well spoken.. the guy aged well. Really.
Did not expect him to be such a gem. Dave Hanson is the man!

My favorite scene is when the Hansons are standing there all bloody listening to the anthem, and the ref is so pissed! Classic!
LISTEN TO THE FUCKING SONG!
I'm listening to the fucking song!!
mine too
Lol! I loved the way the ref kept looking over his shoulders at the Hansons, getting more agitated and angrier by the moment!

"THEY BROUGHT THEIR FUCKIN TOYS!"

Bill - yeah that was a classic line. So many of them in that movie "Fckin machine took my quarter" is one I always remember

I just found this today. Absolutely enjoyed every minute of this. I was a teenager in the 70s, so I know how he feels about that time. It was absolutely the best time of life. Thanks for making this , it really hit a nerve.
Hugely underrated movie. Love it. I'm 59 and have seen the movie 20 times and it never gets old. God save us .....
Great interview! Allowing Dave Hanson to speak without unnecessary interruptions. An excellent movie that still speaks to the imagination.
Outstanding! Was never a hockey player but "Slap Shot" gets logged as my favorite sports movie.

hockey players are the best pro athletes, they don't take themselves too seriously and are always great to talk to if you meet them in person
Bad Pete humble, honest and down to earth except when they’re on the ice.
Right - and they respect their game, their team and their city unlike in so many other pro sports today. Even the toughest enforcers are some of the best people you’d ever want to meet (off the ice, of course).

Loved this movie, and this interview was great! To answer the question of why the movie has such resonance these many years later, it’s because of the “trueness” of the actual actors who really lived that life.
Blake Yokum it sure was real and you wouldn’t believe it unless you lived it.
Nice interview. Authentic. Honest. Best wishes Dave. Thanks for the laughs and memories. Greg (formerly of Regina)
I believe Star wars came out shortly after this too
Top bloke! Slap shot is one of my favourite movies and I’m a Kiwi, go figure !!
I appreciate Dave Hanson’s attitude.
He lives life on his terms and is a ‘straight shooter’…
Good interview, letting Dave tell his story with no interruptions. Well done!
very much enjoyed this interview....well done and thanks
Thanks for the memories, and laughs. Great interview!
Grew up in the 70’s wouldn’t change it for all the iPhones in the world! Best sports movie ever, Paul Newman & The Hanson brothers what a line up! 🇨🇦 🏒 🥅
I love Slap Shot / Greetings from Sweden. Favourite quote: "These guys are a f-g disgrace" :)
Johan Retsler - “That ice is a G... D... disgrace!” I hate to think how many times I’ve recited that one when walking by or skating on a rink.
LOVE Slapshot but it’s not even close to Caddy Shack, nothing is.
My favorite is:
"I"M LISTENING TO THE FUCKIN' SONG!"
I was a sophomore in high school when this came out and loved it.
One of the best interviews I’ve ever seen. Good job.
Great interview.
Best “sports movie” ever made.
What a great interview! Dave Hanson is simply a class act.
The car race track scene..comment... 17:20,,, these guys in the movie were 21, 22 yrs old...my son played college baseball...in today's age, it is all video games, 1970's, slot cars.....that is soooo spot on! Classic!
Great interview....I wish I could live in the ‘70s again as well...
Thanks to Dave Hanson for being part of such a fun movie :-)
Haven't seen the film in a few years, but I can honestly say the only thing I remember is the Hanson brothers. No other plot lines other than Newman being manager/player. They are what everyone wants to see. Great interview.
There was something so raw and real about the characters in Slap Shot that resonated. I am sure the filmmakers saw this and is why they offered the Hanson Bros a contract.
Dave Hanson: YOU’RE A BEAUTY!!!
what an awesome guy
This is one of the best interviews I've ever seen on TH-cam.
The best 22 mind I ever spent on youtube.
What a great guy and to show not to take yourself too seriously, most of all to laugh at yourself.
