One of my I.T. jobs had a skeleton crew (all guys) on the midnight-to-8AM shift. All kinds of interesting stuff happened on that shift. One morning we came in and found the soda machine horizontal instead of vertical. I guess one of the night shift guys tried to get his quarter back.
In real life they trashed the machine so bad all the bottles broke and it flooded the floor. They had to buy the machine, it was owned by the bus station and wasn't a movie prop.

It really captures the feeling of living in the Northeast in the mid-seventies. The factory closings, etc.... The bar scenes, I can smell the stale beer and the lighting and music are spot on. This is one of those movies you lock onto while channel surfing. It doesn't matter how far into the movie it is. Goodfellas is that way also.
Everything they do, they do it together! George Roy Hill gets deserved credit with "The Sting" and "Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid" yet "Slap Shot" provides great camera angles and great timing. Dede Allen's editing was crucial and atypical, she worked with Paul Newman in "The Hustler" which made it more comfortable... as Mr. Newman made all who worked with him feel that way.
This movie came out at a time when my family were huge hockey fans. Had season tix to our local IHL team and went to every home game and many away games as well. We saw this flick as a family, and even though Mom was worried about the harsh language penetrating our young ears, we STILL all laughed or asses off. I believe the book made it's rounds through the house as well.. One of the funniest movies I have ever seen, even to this day!!
I grew up in Canada. This movie is a national treasure because it’s really how we played hockey back in the day. I remember taking a stick to the teeth when I was about 14. I got up and said to the opposing player wtf man. He said, “That’s how we play around here!” I spit out teeth and kept playing😂
I love Strother Martin. A great character actor. He and Newman worked together in that prison movie. Cool Hand Luke. "What we have here is a failure to communicate." I never saw Slap Shot, but based on this clip, I'll check it out.
We are a hockey family. Brother in law was NHL before he blew out his knee. Now a hockey agent. Both my nephews went to Shattuck-St Mary's then to the Detroit Steels and the oldest was drafted by the Las Vegas Golden Knights. My son has played since 4 and is in a Dallas league and on 2 travel teams. They were playing in Chicago in February and these 10 year old got into a fight when the opposing team slammed into the goalie. They were punching and my son grabs a kid, puts him in a headlock and threw him to the ground. And the gloves came off. At the end, 2 kids were ejected and 3 were in the penalty box. I was so proud. And my son and his friends can all sing that silly song "Flow Like Trudeau".

Cool Hand Luke. Nice reference. I liked when Captain put him in the box and it was for his own good to get his mind right and Paul Newman said he wished he'd quit being so good to him.

Paul Newman & Strother Martin back together again after Cool Hand Luke ("What we have here .... is a failure to communicate") & Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. I just love those coke bottle bottom glasses the brothers all wear.
One of my favorite things in my life is that my grandma is friends with these guys, lol. They used to play for a team in my hometown and she was a young figure skater that helped organize one of the first womens hockey teams up there. I’ve met them a bunch of times because they do like meet and greets (or used to, this was like 20 years ago) but they’re really cool guys! My gram and then (just two of them usually) would go have dinner.
0:53 A lot of people tend to miss this exchange of dialogue, and I think that specific bit of dialogue at least justifies the way the Hansons are; They're literally the _very youngest_ of the Charlestown Chiefs, even younger than College aged Ned Braden! I'd say it's pretty fair to let the very youngest of the bunch act like they're the kids, pretty much because they _are_ in comparison to the other Chiefs.
Fun fact if you read Steve Carlson book "the one in the middle" he said they used to have race car races in their apartment with their teammates the Jamestown Chiefs...its a good book
Not too many people know that Strother Martin , cool hand Luke, slap shot, the man who shot liberty valance, true grit. Was a Olympic diver in 1948 he was also a swim instructor in WW2

It's probably a little bit easier when you're cast to play someone like yourself.
You always have to tell a hockey player to be himself on camera. Sometimes it’s for better, sometimes for worse.
"Get me a grape or an orange, non o'that stinkin' ruutbeer!"

I love when he picks up the toy car and stares off into the abyss in disbelief..."Jesus Christ..."
Ikr, Like he's wondering, "how the hell did I get stuck with them??"
That was pure Paul Newman talent rightnthere!
Now that's how you introduce new characters. Great comic timing from the Hansons.
