Dirtiest? Hard to say with all the head shots - it's close between Torres on Hossa and Cooke on Savard. In terms of ones you should include in part 2: Trevor Gillies's head shot and punches on Eric Tangradi, Trevor Gillies' jumping Cal Clutterbuck, Gary Suter's cross check to the face of Paul Kariya (I remember that in Nagano, he got booed every time he touched the puck for that because the Japanese fans wanted to see Paul Kariya play), Ulf Samuelsson's knee on Cam Neely, Brad Marchand low-bridging Sami Salo, Vaclav Varada's boarding of Krys Kolanos, Todd Bertuzzi on Steve Moore... those are all the ones I can think of right now. Well, and umpteen more knee-on-knee hits by Marchment and Cooke.

Curious how many of these players had to retire after these hits? Some of them look so damn brutal that they had to have long term issues. I think 15:30 is the hit that ended Cam Neely's career.
Savard had to retire after Matt cooke hit, Horton had to retire after Rome hit, Neely had to retire after Samuelson hit. Raffi Torres and Matt Cooke are the two most disgusting players I've ever seen
@@cindysantoro-ml7vl Neely played during 5 more seasons after the hit, although in just 162 games. While the hit certainly played a part through developing myositis ossificans, it did not immediately cause the retirement.
Don't know if he retired because of the hit, but Paul Kariya was never the same after getting hit by Stevens. Watching that hit there is absolutely no way that wasn't a TBI. That shit was brutal. Pretty sure Stevens hitting Lindros put another nail in his coffin as well.

Wouldn't be the first time a known dirty player had a letter. Crap, Dale Hunter was Washington's *captain* for five seasons! And he was a very dirty player.
I thought the same thing... Dude could be dying for all anybody knows, but instead of making sure he gets quick medical attention, we fight literally on top of his unconscious body....
Matt Cooke is a criminal. Was happy to see Duncan Keith put a dirty hit on Cooke, although Keith too had a couple features here as well. Awesome video.
I often find myself apologizing for the Canucks having drafted him. He might be the dirtiest regular player in the NHL over the last 20 years. (Trevor Gillies was worse, but he only played 57 NHL games.) Tom Wilson is starting to get up there with all his head shots, though.
Thank you for putting this together! I think it clearly shows you have three types of players: 1. Players who make bad choices, or just make an unfortunate hit at an inopportune time. 2. Decent players who make repeated bad choices, like Marchand, Tom Wilson & Kadri, but all of these guys have showed that a player can mature and start making better decisions. I especially despise Wilson for some of his worst hits, but in discussions, I have always said he does not need to play like that, he really has talent, and he showed some of that in the Caps recent playoff run. I suppose you could say the same for Marchand and Kadri as far as talent. 3. Predatory hitters: Scott Stevens, Matt Cooke, Ty Domi, Claude Lemeiux, Brian? Marchment, and I am sure I missed and forgot some. I honestly do not care that the NHL had no rules to specifically protect players; Scott Stevens and Matt Cooke clearly displayed serial predatory behavior, and seemingly enjoyed injuring opponents. Full disclosure: I am a Bruins fan, and I do like Marchand; however, I never liked when Brad made stupid choices, especially when it could/did injure someone. Those are just dumb, selfish actions that almost always hurt one's own team.
I don’t think they did it because they enjoyed injuring people I think they did it better the chances they had at winning the games and they did it to be… powerful and to bully other players so that they seem menacing or something because if you look back at the Steven Kariya (mind my misspelling plz) vid you will see he is enraged that he came back out I don’t think he did it to be mean I think he did it to get him off the ice
I like Marchand as a player but not when he does hes stupid hit. This is sound like hi dont like Mickael Jackson as a child molester but i like hes music. For me the way i realy work my life you are a fucking dangerous human your self because you have two faces just like 90% of the world you live in.. wy do you think the is full of dramatic situation.
I wouldn't put Stevens in the same category as Cooke, all of Stevens' hits were legal and helped the Devils win the Stanley Cup. Obviously, he'd be suspended for them now but that's what makes hockey different, the way it evolves.
I've watched and played hockey for years. I love the sport. With that said...there is absolutely no place in the game for a dirty hit. The rule should be changed. If a player misses games due to a dirty hit...the b***h that caused the injury shall miss the same amount of time. Keep the game fast, competitive, physical and clean.
I'm 27 and just recently got into hockey. As a someone who loves physical sports, I would of loved to play hockey growing up. I wouldn't love getting hit anything similar to people in these videos
@@erikl827 yes hockey is the best sport!! Unfortunately though if you played as a kid you would deal with MANY dirty players. That's how i broke my collar bone when i was 15, the hit was so late that the ref didn't even see (puck was down in other teams end and i was still in my own defensive zone, i had passed the puck up ice). Incidents/injuries like this made local leagues here in Canada raise the age for hitting. Because of stupid people. Some young teens just play to hit, instead of playing good hockey and taking opportunities when they come, and knowing when to back off. It really always comes down to the player though in my opinion, raising the age made no difference. In fact i think it might have made it worse since teenagers were mad they had to wait longer to hit, and then they would hit even more dirty. But yea hockey is awesome and i still played after the break but i absolutely cannot stand dirty players! No player making an NHL salary should ever make dirty hits like the ones in this video, they should be banned and have their contracts terminated
@@dsskills-k3p My son's been playing 5 years now and the single biggest problem is refs who won't call the dirty hits and leagues that won't enforce any real discipline. How Dale Hunter was allowed back in the league is beyond me. That hit after Turton scored was one of the worst ever because the play is dead after a goal and he went head hunting. When the Caps hired him as a coach I wanted blood.
This was the hit i remember when i think of 'dirtiest of all time'. Absolute bush league garbage. His excuse after was that he was 'finishing the check' and 'didnt realize he scored'. Complete garbage. Turgeon separated his shoulder if I remember too and was out of the playoffs.
3:00 Downie is currently sitting in Jamaica undergoing Magic Mushroom treatment for the years of Concussion, Anger, and drug abuse he went through as an enforcer. After seeing what he did in the NHL, it’s cathartic watching him break down in tears.
No he wouldn't. He was good for the time but today? He would be mediocre. You're like one of those people that think Gretzky would be any good today too.
Pierre Turgeon was never the same player after that hit (shoulder never fully healed). The hit also cost the Islanders as they lost their best player, next playoff round, and super star player for multiple years. He had 58 goads and 74 assists that year (career highs by far), continues play for 13 more years, averaging 22.8 goals per year. Prior to the hit he averages 36 goals per season (6).
@@mikejackson6570 And was a well-known scumbag on top of it all. The play was completely over, can't claim heat-of-the-moment, or "things happened too fast..."
to be fair, that's not why his numbers went down so much, as the leagues scoring was an all time high in 93 and it went down every year after that, the 98-04 seasons had the lowest scoring ever. Guys with UNDER 80 POINTS were top 10 in 2004. Thats why guys like Sundin Iginla Alfredsson and Datsyuk don't have more career points, and especially Jagr. Jagr had 3 seasons in the KHL after the rangers, plus the 04 05 season, you take those into account and the era he played in? His adjusted points compared to say, Gretzky's prime era, would be likely about 2500 career points. Far from Wayne but, much more than everyone else.
As a rugby fan and former player, we put so much emphasis on head contact in our sport nowadays, some of these hits make us look like school kids in a slapping contest.
It's why I really respect rugby, they always tout not being football(soccer) and they're very physical but they also respect the game. Hockey nowdays is much better, especially in the EU, but most people don't understand how much damage that much of mass (the player) tackling a head can do. It's like two cars crashing at 30kmh, might seem slow but it basically becomes a 60kmh crash into a wall.
I mistakenly hit someone from behind once when I was pretty young, Buddy turned at the last second and I didn’t have the reaction time to correct myself, I was shook. Seeing hits like these give me the chills because it’s really no joke.

@@corygarfield86 it was a bit late, but it wasn't dirty on the same level as these other cheap shots. For the editor to put it into the same category is an insult and shows pure ignorance about hockey and the situation. That first hit was the same hit that ended my hockey career. I got hit from behind after a full extension for a slap shot, twisted me even more and tore muscles and ligaments in my spine.
You know, I saw the hit Claude Lemieux delivered to Draper on TV and I just realized that Darren McCarthy was right in front of the hit, sitting on the bench.....no wonder why he beat the ever living hell out of him in Detroit the following year!
The worst for me is the Chara one where he decapitated the guy on the box glass. Second is the cross-check to the neck straight in to the edge of the box. Both looks like intent to kill
I disagree. The Chara hit on Pacioretti was perfectly OK. If it wasn't for the idiotically placed stanchion of the glass it would have been a routine play.
@@markmayer5788Rome’s hit on Horton. Like a driving a car with a blindfold. Clean hit, wasn’t a headshot or late. You know like the stanchion unfortunate. How many games suspension did Chara get? Unfortunate? OK goes both ways
My one question about all these dirty hits is this...I only played the Sunday night pick up games after coaching my sons youth games. That being said, how can you actually defend your teammate when they leveled such a sicking hit as shown in these videos. I'm all for a nice body check here and there but if I had a teammate like a COOKE I'd be jumping the pile to pound on him also!
So I played competitive hockey and I'll defend my teammates most of the time but sometimes you don't. I heard one story where a star player was a cunt every game and finally the enforcer decided to just let him get his deserved ass whooping.
You know that's a good question but honestly I think it all comes down to obligation. It's like this for any sport really not just hockey. I've seen it in football, Baseball, and Basketball as well. Whenever a player delivers a dirty hit I'm pretty sure the reason the teammates defend them is because they feel obligated to since their on the same team.
0:03 I got hit almost exactly like this. I was playing in a practice scrimmage for my youth hockey team, and one of my teammates I’d had disagreements with was on the other team. I took it into the offensive zone, and dumped it in. A second later, the kid came up behind me and slammed his shoulder into the side of my head. I received a minor concussion from my own teammate. It wasn’t the only time either. I would be waiting for my turn in a drill, and he would skate up to me and slam me into the boards. He was the coach’s son, so I couldn’t do much about it, and the coaches completely ignored him. In fact, one of them even encouraged it, said it “made the team stronger”.
I admit to losing my cool In practice and tried throwing a big hit on a team mate because he was taking other players heads off but he cowardly ducked the hit and i concussed myself
The Stevens hits are brutal. The guy was a truck. Kariya got the last laugh in that game. He was resurrected and scored. Lindros was a walking concussion. He never learned to skate with his head up. In the 90's that was a death sentence.
Stevens was one of the dirtiest pos to ever play hockey, but he was good at hiding. Total head hunting, career ending a-hole. Lindros was prone to concussions as it was (so was his brother) but you're right, he was so big and fast and strong as a junior he got away with sloppy habits and the sketchy dirty 90s NHL (see Scott Stevens) was no place for that sort of mistake.
Devils got the last laugh as Kariya was nowhere to be found in game 7 and I am sure he felt that hit for weeks after. At the time if your elbows were down, it was legal. There was no penalty on either of the Stevens plays, both were deemed legal hits.
@@smgdfcmfah When you say that, what I hear is "You've only seen a couple clips of him." Like OP said, he was a truck. Keep your head up. He always kept his arm close to his body, he never threw his elbow out, and if you weren't paying attention, he would crush you. Other players at the time would all say you had to be careful, because if you weren't paying attention, he would level you, and the key here is, they all said it was clean hits. Kariya is the only one that Stevens leveled that said it was a dirty hit. And quite a few players from the league disagree with him.
I don’t know hardly anything about hockey, but I remember seeing a dude crack a guy in the back of the head with his stick one time. That’s gotta be the dirtiest shit I’ve ever seen. Enjoyed the video!

Most of those hits were bad, a couple were acceptable but just happened to end up with a bad result. The most glaring omission would be Boychuk breaking Mason Raymond's back on a play that oculd have been called so many different penalties. The one I thought was extremely dirty that nobody talks about the hit, is Chiarot on Tavares which led to Perry kneeing Tavares and knocking him out of the playoffs. Perry couldn't have done anything different, but Chiarot led with the knee, changed the trajectory of his knee, and the result was a high speed can-opener, always thought that was extremely dirty but everyone just wanted to talk about Perry

I don't even acknowledge him ever being a Penguin anymore.
As one as well I ditto that
I often find myself apologizing for the Canucks having drafted him. He might be the dirtiest regular player in the NHL over the last 20 years. (Trevor Gillies was worse, but he only played 57 NHL games.) Tom Wilson is starting to get up there with all his head shots, though.
As a Caps fan I'd like to apologize for Tom Wilson. The guy seems to go out of his way at times to be dirty.
Want to apologize for your announcers too
Thank you for putting this together! I think it clearly shows you have three types of players:
He's a scumbag and has far too many dirty hits in his career.
This man typed this and no credit. My essays in ELA have less detail than this
I don’t think they did it because they enjoyed injuring people I think they did it better the chances they had at winning the games and they did it to be… powerful and to bully other players so that they seem menacing or something because if you look back at the Steven Kariya (mind my misspelling plz) vid you will see he is enraged that he came back out I don’t think he did it to be mean I think he did it to get him off the ice

But yea hockey is awesome and i still played after the break but i absolutely cannot stand dirty players! to be fair, that's not why his numbers went down so much, as the leagues scoring was an all time high in 93 and it went down every year after that, the 98-04 seasons had the lowest scoring ever. Guys with UNDER 80 POINTS were top 10 in 2004. Thats why guys like Sundin Iginla Alfredsson and Datsyuk don't have more career points, and especially Jagr.
@Phuckofftopuss I hope it was worth it. The boss’s son/coach’s son problem is real

@@kenneththorberg6914 Who is to be blamed here? Tom Wilson or the zebra man with a tunnel vision? Tom Wilson for sure for his lack of thinking before acting. But, the officials lacked decision-making skills. I think many hockey fans would do a better job than many guys wearing striped shirts.
I remember when that happened to Barrie. All of CO had Cooke's head on reward and were hunting for him. Never have we wanted to see another team lose a round so bad.
The head hunters
Can tell the difference between who’s trying to finish their check and make a nice big clean hit and who’s actively making a conscious decision to hurt someone…those are the ones that make my stomach turn
I think you could argue every hit comes with the intention to hurt. Not severely in every case but definitely cause some damage
So most of these are absolutely dirty hits. It pretty much comes down to where and how they're hit.
4:55
I’m sure that many people to this day say Chara knew exactly what he was doing
you should do "players that don't usually score gets the OT winner" pls☺
or a clutch late GW’r
That Downie hit on Mccammond was just vicious. Dude was totally out of control, especially since it was a pre-season game.
Downie was a fucking clown… and the Flyers wasted a first round pick on him.
I've read comments from Downie that he really regrets the hit on Dean McAmmond
I was at that game never heard the building so silent after the hit
He had the puck
@@thehistory5401 And Downie was coming full speed, used the net/goalie as a screen and left his feet and went right at his head. Puck or not, that's intent to injure.
Aaron Rome single handedly changed the trajectory of that cup series with that dirty hit on Horton. Boston was reinvigorated after that and never took their foot off the gas.
Honestly, if McSorley had still been with them, Rome would have been scooping his own jaw up with a shovel.
Totally clean hit by Rome there !!! Bullshit call and suspension aswell.✌
@@roncarter5871 apparently you were watching a different series. it was very late and to be honest, he was never the same.
@@shotaholic1 ...ya I disagree with you on that but ..it was clean
@@roncarter5871 jumping into someone's head isn't clean
Perry getting kicked from an outdoor game within the first 3 min of the first period and having that walk of shame in front of so many is so great
In my opinion I think the dirtiest play is at 2:01
Churla deserved what he got for trying to run Bure several times only seconds prior to that hit. watch?v=xjUO4JO4IaY&ab_channel=yosoo
Ok, so I'm late to this video......BUT, Keith should be awarded sainthood for the hit on Cooke. That's not a dirty hit, that's justice by God!!
wish the vid showed the suspensions/fines for each of these.
and that Domi elbow at 4:40 was such a disgrace. i lost so much respect for him after that.
Having respect for Tie Domi is like having respect for Nigerian princes. But I loved when he punched the fan that fell into the penalty box, classic.
@@andrewcole7479 i thought my comment would get some hate, but man that was funny.
@@gordlawson11 I agree with you. I didn't like Domi very much, but I also loved him for sucker punching Ulf Samuelsson.
I think CanucksFan is the one with a series about suspensions, fines, and forfeited salaries for penalties. Give him a look
The amount of headshots is just devastating, it really curls my toes and I’m good with this type of stuff
4:55 Jesus Christ. He’s lucky to have not broken his neck… my god that was brutal.
Pacioretty had several broken vertebrae and Chara was never suspended. It's an absolute shame...
I'm not even really a hockey fan but I remember this and I remember how disgraceful it was. Every part of it was intentional and criminal. Max was lucky to live through it. The focus seemed to go to the poor arena design rather than the blatant outrageous assault.
I remember seeing this and thinking he was dead. Brutal.
Torres on the next clip gets 41 games for almost nothing, still dirty but he didn’t nearly kill somebody.
@@danieldeneault153 slight correction, he only had one fractured vertebrae, specifically the C4 Vertebra.
That Cory Perry hit basically ended Ryan Ellis’ career
As a Stars fan, we were embarrassed to have Perry play like that. That 1/4 mile walk of shame though.... priceless.
Somebody should have told the Flyers before they signed him to play 4 games and then ride injuries for the rest of the year.
@@donaldstevens932 Hey now, the Flyers off season plan was to build the worst D in the league... So he fits in perfectly with that!
He also nearly ended John Taveras career too.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Claude Lemieux hitting Kris Draper was the beginning of like a decade long rivalry
Hot take: the Steve Moore hit on Naslund wasn't that bad. Certainly not deserving of what came after it
Wasn’t that bad? Were you aware of the fact that Naslund wasn’t the same after that hit? However, what happened to Moore was uncalled for, but he had it coming. He chickened out from the big boys, Brad May, Wade Brookbank, and Sean Pronger, before answering the bell against a smaller Matt Cooke.
I remember a playoffs game in the late 90's where Claude Lemieux hit Kris Draper from behind, face first into the boards so hard Draper's face burst open. Even as a hard core Aves fan that made me sick to see. Also, poor Modano. lol. Mans can't even get to the ambulance before being dropped again.
I feel bad for laughing at that clip with Modano, but damn if that wasn't funny. So unexpected. Sam Rosen's reaction too haha
Did you not watch this video? It was shown early on
The stretcher drop was WWF/WWE level
I remember a year later watching the avalanche vs wings deathmatch.
The classic lemiux hit that led to one of the most intense rivalry in the history of sports and the famous fight night at the joe.
During a tournament in high school I was skating up the boards breaking out and the big guy on the other team was lining me up for a hit. I passed the puck and went to step around him, but he (purposefully) stuck out is leg and took out my knee. My knee hyper-extended, I partially tore a ligament and cracked my tibia at the joint. He was suspended for the rest of the season. I hate dirty plays and unnecessary injuries.
... That being said in also a Bruins fan. Two things can be true at once.
I hope you're okay now
Cool story bro
Those knee to knee hits are career enders. As bad as the elbow to the head shots
George Jones was my father's favorite musician, and it's funny to me because now I'm in my 40s I find myself listening to him more and more.
something ive always liked about hockey is how close the team is. When someone gets hard slammed they dont even hesitate to jump in
In every other sport they'd be suspended for a game or 2.
they have no idea how many youngers quit hockey because of that. Hockey should be abotu abalnce and control not MMA bullies trying to hurt people. some aggressive and competitive spirit is fine but this is a disgrace. also every team in existence support eachother... but this is just bullies
I never liked the flip side of that coin, where the team is standing up for the goon. Show a little moral fortitude and call them out publicly.
man these are brutal. seeing guys lock up on the ice like that is scary
That Lemiuex hit on that wings player is still embarrassing for me as a die hard Avs fan. That was fucked up man.
Yeah, but it really exploded that Avs/Wings rivalry. Made for some amazing hockey games. And I'm not just talking about the hits and full line brawls. Really intense games.
You dislike him so much you won't even bother spelling his name correctly. Serves him right!
Literally broke Kris drapers face
@@ThePsycoScout some of the best memories watching hockey with my grandfather. Great games.
Darren McCarty definitely made sure he regretted that decision
I just LOVE these 'of all time' lists. Dang! How great that this guy has seen EVERY dirty hit in the history of the NHL. I sure wish I had the time to see that many games. I really would have thought there were some really dirty hits from the 50's and 60's, but I guess not.
Raffi Torres: King Of The Cheap Shots. I watched that hit on Hossa live and I knew from the point of impact, Torres had a 1st class ticket on the suspension train.
Sometimes when I need a pick me up I just watch video of Adam Mcquaid beating the sh*t out of Torres.
No ones gonna talk about the dirty hit on the paramedic? 12:28
Lol
When they ran over the guy with the stretcher I was crying 😂😂
