CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Hanson Brothers get things started with a pre-game brawl before the National Anthem even begins.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Paul Newman plays Reggie Dunlop, the coach of a pathetic minor-league American hockey team. His career at a standstill and his marriage in tatters, Dunlop has nothing to lose by taking on a new group of players who are one evolutionary step above Neanderthals. Only when the team begins winning does he decide to get behind these players, and to encourage the rest of the team to play as down-and-dirty as the newcomers. Straight-arrow team member Ned Braden (Michael Ontkean) resents this influx of gonzo talent, preferring to play clean. As the film's multitude of subplots play themselves out, Dunlop does his best to keep the outraged Braden on the team. Slap Shot is the sort of film for which the "R" rating was invented: Its nonstop barrage of profanity and its raunchy action sequences are of such intensity that the film will probably never be shown intact on commercial television.

These guys were incredibly natural comedic actors, as well as excellent players. One of the best bits of movie casting ever.
The studio offered the guys who played the Hanson bros a multi-movie contract, but they turned it down because they wanted to focus on hockey.
Apparently most of their lines were ad libbed so even more impressive.
@Desmo Froppy how is anything he said a reach? he said theyre funny, good hockey players, and were perfect casts for the movie. tell me what you disagree with in that sentence lmao
@Desmo Froppy dude watch any commercial with hockey players in it and you'll see he's not. I literally just learned these guys were hockey players too saw this movies years ago.
Someone's hard for ice hockey 😂
The cut from an all-out brawl to the bloodied players standing during the national anthem was hilarious. Someone behind the camera had a great sense of humor.
Or the editor. or actually it was probably the director who was supervising both of those jobs
That's what happened when there was a pre-game brawl. They'd beat the hell out of each other, and then stand for the national anthem.

You surely wouldn't have trouble getting people to stand for the national anthem with this guy talking to the kids :)
I'M LISTENING TO THE FUCKING SONG
It’s amazing how he calls it a song and not an anthem
You can only argue with yourself on this one,lol
the most amazing thing to me is that the guys who played the Hanson Brothers, the Carlson brothers, really were hockey players, not actors, and yet they're three of the greatest movie characters in movie history. That's probably why.
Well, they couldn't find actors to play the Hansons, and one of the real Hanson Brothers wasn't available so the Carlsons were hired. The commentary with the "Hanson Brothers" is really interesting, including some real stories that are a riot (and should have been in the movie).
@@Paulafan5 the "real Hanson brothers" _were_ the Carlsons, their names were changed for the story (for the book or the movie, I don't remember which). One of them got a call up to a higher league before filming began, so his place was taken by the actor who was supposed to play the "Killer Carlson" character -- whose real life inspiration was a player named Hanson 😂. So it can get a bit confusing.
And the Oggie Ogglethorpe character was based on a player called Bill Goldthorpe who held various penalty minute records in Minor League Hockey. @@jsquared1013

I love how in hockey you get two sports in one: boxing and hockey.
Sadly, after the 2005 lockout, the league drastically changed. Goons were on the way out, and the game become a lot more open for smaller players to develop. Yes, there are more goals and speed nowadays, but I think we all miss NHL from the 70s, 80s and 90s. I do, anyway.
People used to joke that they went to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out.
@@roberttomaino4080 "Goons" have a purpose, they don't just go around willy-nilly attacking weaker players. They were there to keep the Claude Lemieuxs and Dale Hunters in check. Nowadays you still need them IMHO, they just have to be more skilled than they used to be to justify a roster spot.
And football
There was a... documentary on the Russian league and how their players changed ours. Basically some of their players started coming over who knew russian hockey arithmetic and they started beating our teams which had more brawlers. They even talked about how their league it wasn't allowed to be fighting like ours and coming over it suprised them. So, part of the change was more disciplined foreign teams/leagues.
I remember a few things from movies back in the day, but that punch is one that is and will be cemented in my mind forever. I laughed uncontrollably when I first saw it and still chuckle about it to this day.
You can see Michael Ontkean trying so hard not to laugh......great scene!!! 44 years later I'm still laughing hysterically!!!

This movie is pure gold 😅
This was by far the greatest movie telling the story of lower-level professional hockey ever filmed and the Hanson Brothers were a perfect fit!
It has been years since I saw this, I was totally unprepared for the awesomeness of the Hanson brothers.
I’m 54 and I saw this for the first time a couple days ago.
Best movie I’ve seen in ages.
My Dad was an extra in this scene - he was a back-up goalie for the Syracuse blazers at the time (several scenes were filmed at the Syracuse war memorial). He wears the sweater #1 and can be seen locking up with Paul Newman in the wide shots down in the lower right of the screen. He's got some great pictures of himself with Paul Newman. He was 23 years old at the time.
This is why I read TH-cam comments
This is still one of the top 5 sports movies ever made and many hockey players still quote this movie despite its tactics and rules being out of date.

One of my favourite films. The Hansons just make me roar laughing, also the expression on Newman's face changing when he realises the Hansons are his new secret weapon. GREAT MOVIE and still works! Today in the UK they now give a warning! "Some scenes may contain violence and might upset some viewers!" I bloody well hope so! (just how did we get through the 70s without warnings?)

My old man, rest his soul, was being groomed as a FIRST draft choice for the Chicago Blackhawks BUT he beat up a ref and was suspended for life. I feel he should have been given 1 more chance a couple years later but they gave him the boot for good. He was able to drink from the Stanley cup in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada around the late 80s after the oilers beat my city, Calgary for the umpteenth time. All be it, the oilers still had the great 1, Wayne Gretzky. He loved this movie and played hockey and coached while riding around in a bus like lunatic rock stars. He even told a story about how Rocket Richaard went nuts on the bus and my old man got him in A HOLD to calm him down. The old man said, cool it or I might have to break your arm, then rocket reviled, GO AHEAD..He was that nuts but my old man just held him longer till things calmed down. My dad could have broke his arm or even his head for that matter as he was BIG, STRONG and could be meaner than a grizzly with his balls cut off but he wasn't IN the fight( it didn't get drilled or ITD BE ON), hence he kept his cool...
