My initial experience with DmC: Devil May Cry was much more pleasant than normal, as I started playing it after Devil May Cry 5 had already been announced, and I played the "Definitive Edition" on PS4 Pro. It actually removes those color-coded enemies you hated so much, among various other edits. No, they are not in any other game.

    • @teneesh3376
      @teneesh3376 4 ปีที่แล้ว +46

Doesn't remove them, but changes the one things that improves them ten fold. They can be damaged by every weapon, but can only be staggered by the weapon they match with. That makes colour coded enemies tolerable
Also anyone playing this version, toggle on hardcore mode and switch lock on to toggle. Since you have to hold buttons to enter angel and demon mode, switching it to toggle frees up your hands. Hardcore mode makes the style meter ask more from you and the biggest change, enemies don't float in the air when devil trigger is on. That annoying filter is still on, but the second biggest problem is gone

So you get introduced to a character, a punk or whatever, Dante, who is attacked by a giant monster. There, he meets a useless character, Kat, who makes him join the resistance, led by an Anonymous. Dante learns that the 4Chan user is actually his long lost brother; Vergil, who is actually a bad guy, as his Nazi-like outfit suggests. Vergil tells him "the world is actually wickedy-wack yo, the villain, Lex Luthor, wants to conquer the world using the media and Monster Energy".
Therefore, Dante decides to help, pulling all his punkness aside and becoming your regular MC, in a world where a guy who, until then, was a punk is going to rebel against an evil society led by demons (subtle isn't it ?). Because only him and his brother can kill Lex Luthor because they are not human but half-demon half-angel abominations (A Nephylim is half-human, half-angel, so don't try to tell me they are fucking Nephylims), and only the UNNATURAL union of two races that are opposed to one another is apparently able to kill this specific guy from one of those 2 races. Why ? Glad you asked, fuck you, that's why.
And so they proceed to take down everything that gives Lex Luthor control over the people, like the Media Man, and the demon who shits in every can of Monster Energy. Also, they beat the crap out of the villain's wife, Lilith (SUBTLE ISN'T IT ?) and her unborn child, an alien to trade 'em against the useless Kat. And then, as they are exchanging the demon for the useless girl Vergil takes a sniper and kill the girl and her Xenomorph, much to Lex Luthor's anger.
And so they proceed to kill Mundus by revealing to him that the 4Chan user was actually Dante's twin brother, another being capable of killing him and yeeting him off a buiding. But then he fuses with garbage and so they kill him again, and in an unforeseen twist, the nazi-friendly, unborn child killing Vergil reveals that now... He wants to control the world like Lex Luthor did ! A twist even M.Nght Shyamalan will tell you is shit.
So you beat the crap out of him, and then there's a DLC showing you how much of a looser he is, but he is reborn through the power of flashbacks and now he is completely evil instead of just being a Nazi-friendly 4Chan users, whatever that means.
There, of course I made sound more ridiculous some parts of the story. But really, it's a bunch of cultural references mixed together to form whatever this shit is supposed to be.

I loved and still do love this game. The music, presentation, and combat was so well done.
I think the DmC's Vergil and Dante are so well developed as characters already and I love how the game doesn't tell you upfront why Dante and Vergil are living the lifestyles that we see in the game but the important thing is is that it just makes sense that they would fall into those life choices because of their horiffic past. Dante escapes into alcohol and sex, while Vergil escapes into his feelings of vengeance. Dante is motivated by a need to escape or distance himself from his tragic past and Vergil is motivated by his feelings of vengeance rooted in his tragic past. On the otherhand, DMC's Dante and Vergil are really cheesy carictures of the American action hero and the Japanese wandering samurai.... executed extremely well. We get really simple elementary level reasons why they do what they do.

The definitive edition does fix a lot of issues.
Coloured enemies can be hurt by any weapon, but can only be stagger by the weapon they're assigned to (original release, weapons bounce off if the weapon isn't right)
There's only one type of key and not 3 types of keys? Haven't played the vanilla version
    Some enemy balancing
If you turn on hardcore mode with any difficulty, enemies don't float when Devil Trigger is turned on. Along with the style meter not being as forgiving
Doing a last minute dodge while in devil mode has been nurfed. Along with a triple dash in angel mode
These features alone elevate this game from a good game, to a fanastic game in my opinion. Though it's weird that the definitive edition isn't on pc
Still not perfect, they haven't fixed some of the enemy AI just walking around looking like idiots. And it is a little broken with some crashing and it failing to load at rare points. And if you see the one video on my channel, you'll see the one time I've seen the Hunter boss do that. And I've played over 100 hours into the game

  • @burningspies1084

Once again great video and at least you admitted that you haven't played the other games.
As a huge DMC fan whos played the games, watched the anime, etc. I'll give you my opinion without spoiling too much of the games. It's kind of long, but I hope you read it.
DMC 1 the controls take some getting used to and the combos aren't great, but the atmosphere, the way weapons work and enemy aggression/variety absolutely makes the game a 10/10 for me. I don't think too many people hate this one. Story is decent. Sadly no mission select in this one, but it is the first in the series so I give it a pass. Difficulty is high especially on DMD(Dante Must Die) so be ready.
DMC 2 is what many would call a train wreck, but I give it a solid 6/10. It not only introduced certain abilities that would be apart of dante's gameplay styles later on, it is the only game to give us the chance to play full separate stories with two battle soundtracks for each character instead of putting characters in on certain missions. Sadly the enemies are a joke and combos are worthless. Long story short it had many great ideas that I would love to see again. Story is ok, but the voice acting really really needed to be redone. Meh diffculty.
DMC 3 the most beloved of the series as you already know. Without mods I give it a 9/10 style switching wasn't introduced yet so you can definitely feel the strain of having a lot of tools, but no chance to use them. The game still manages to make it work though. As for the story its great, special edition adds to Vergils character. It doesn't really ramp up in difficulty until you reach mid game. DMD and Hell and Hell are a nightmare though.
DMC 4 still upsets me to this day because it was unfinished, but gameplay wise. 10/10. This and 3 are where the hardcore players like to show off combos. Not much more to say that others can't tell you. Good difficulty that really challenges your skill, but needed more enemy variety.
DmC its....a good game for beginners and that's saying a lot considering DMC 1 had basically no combos. Ninja Theory did a lot of bad bad things with this game that just upset all of us long time fans. So that explains the hatred and you see for yourself how limited the combos were on certain enemies. Story makes a joke out of well liked characters, but is okay if you don't know anything about Dante and his friends.
DMC 5. Sadly I haven't had the chance to play it yet, but just from what I've seen it's great. Anyone who has played the game feel free to chime in here.
All in all I hope you like the series it's great for people who just want a good challenge.

dmc 5 is an interesting case because even though its absolutely fantastic and an overall amazing experience (in my opinion of course) there is some contention with the advanced players of the series. the reason for this is because dmc 5 is missing a few advanced mechanics that were present in 4, chief among them being reversals and inertia. both of these allow a massive amount of freedom of expression if youre good enough to use them, however it takes a long time and alot of practice to learn how to use them properly at all and thusly most people (including myself) arent going to be impacted by these omissions and both inertia and reversals (including some other options that most high level player agree are crucial such as turbo mode and must style) have since been modded into the PC port of the game

  • @TechnoSyndro
    @TechnoSyndro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +53

DmC is a decent character action game and easily the best western attempt at the genre I've ever seen, but it was made to replace Devil May Cry which is the pinnacle of combat. It's like ordering a five star steak and getting one from Outback Steakhouse instead. It might not be BAD, but it's a huge step down regardless. The enemies generally force you into a specific way of fighting them even when they aren't color coded, and the boss fights are almost all shallow setpieces instead of well designed super enemies that test your mastery of the combat. They removed the style system which removed a lot of the higher depth that Dante had in 3, 4 and later 5. Mechanics like Royal Guard are completely removed as a result of their reworked control scheme, and the lack of lock on in the original release really limits the number of moves Dante could have. An entire button on the controller is dedicated to just the launcher because you can't lock on to do back and attack anymore. Also there's no taunt button, and that's awful because a well timed taunt is a quintessential part of DMC.
It's also worth noting that they made a bunch of gameplay changes in the definitive edition (which I can tell you're playing because your axe doesn't recoil back when you hit that ice enemy at 9:48 , originally you flung back like when you hit that angel bubble later) that took fan feedback into account and made a bunch of smart changes. This version is significantly better than the original version on PS3/360 and PC, which I would call a straight up bad game. The original release doesn't even have a lock-on function, relying entirely on a soft lock where Dante will attack in the direction of enemies in the direction he's facing. This makes targeting some enemies like flying ones incredibly frustrating as you have to fight against what the game thinks you want to target. If you do end up going back to the reboot after playing 4 I'd recommend playing the old version on either the old consoles or on PC. (Definitive Edition never came to PC unfortunately)

Yeah there's a lot to talk about with the whole reboot situation. If there's anything to take away from this complete waste of time misfire it's that DMC 3 and 4's combat was so far above the rest that someone unfamiliar with the series can have fun with a take on the gameplay series fans will consider a 10th of the quality.

      The amount of weapons
And bosses that really challenged your knowledge of the combat really outclasses anything DmC has to offer
And 3 holds up much better than DmC the combat in 3 is so satisfying that it has infinite replayability and the fact that it got a remaster in the switch and that the already great combat system got improved with free style switching
Your argument about saying that DmC combat system is better than 3 is futile
And saying that the combat is system is equally great as 4 and 5 says how little you know about the original series combat system.
DmC is a mediocre one and done game while the original series excluding 2 is a game series that has infinite replayability and fun to be had
I am not saying that people who like DmC are idiots because I liked what I played in it what really ticks me off is that when people start claiming that it is up there with greats in the series Because it really isn't not in a narrative standpoint and definitely not in combat because DMC combat was never supposed to be so blatantly simple it was supposed to be easy to understand hard to master which the reboot clearly isn't
But I can say one thing that DmC was a good time while it lasted but I don't see picking it up over 1,3,4 and 5 but it's still miles better than 2

This is simply theory what I have to say. The reason why Ninja Theory's DmC was made was because the director, Hideaki Itsuno, was upset with Capcom and how DMC4 was made. He hated that Capcom rushed him to finish DMC4 and he was not allowed any creative freedom. The only way to finish the game development was to make Dante play Nero missions backwards. So Hideaki Itsuno decided to go to another game developer, Ninja Theory, to make a reboot. And of course, pretty much every DMC fan hated it like crazy. And even years after the reboot was made, Hideaki Itsuno said he wanted to make DmC2 with Ninja Theory. He actually enjoyed working with them. Capcom knew this would destroy the DMC Franchise's reputation so they gave in and said "Make DMC5 and do whatever you want. Don't kill Devil May Cry."

DmC is a good game the problem is that it is called Devil May Cry and compared to the old ones (minus DMC2, that sucks) the game is a huge letdown. I think fans wouldn't have made such a fuzz about it but the developers of the game started to mock the fans and even talk bad about the old games. That is what really drove fans insane. I remember watching those presentations by Tameem Antonidas on why DmC was better and just smiling because there would be so much drama

As someone who used to hate on DmC back in the day and at the time had only played DMC 4 I can honestly say that DmC is an ok game in my eyes now that the rage has subsided. The pre-release controversy with how the devs treated the fans and the initial reveal trailer definitely didn't help paint the game in a positive light for a lot of series veterans. One thing that most people agree on is that the color coded enemies were a mistake and break the flow of the gameplay and that the level design was awesome except for all of the in your face / heavy handed text that pops up from time to time.
While the DMC series has always had juvenile humor, DmC kind of took it up that extra notch that proved to be grating for some people so that can come down to personal preferance. Personally I wasn't a big fan of the change of having Dante and Vergil be half devil and angel instead of half devil and human. Having them be half human makes them slightly more relateable and gives Dante more of a reason to sympathize with humans especially since his mother was one. I also prefer the themes about family and being human (or half devil) of the original series.

So DmC came out a few years after I had gotten into the series and already experienced DMC1-4. When it was first announced and I saw the look of it, I was not amused, I'll admit.
That said, I've always been the type of person to give everything a fair shot, so I picked it up instead of immediately writing it off.
And I'm honestly happy I did. I ended up having fun with DmC, particularly the new combat. It was an enjoyable mix-up of the original weapon-switch formula that was kinda started in 3 then really polished in 4 and 5. Less so with the story and characters, but I didn't think they were terrible either.
The Bob Barbas fight was incredible. It's not only my favorite moment of the Reboot, but I enjoyed it so much that I'd rate it as one of my favorite bosses in a franchise with a whole lot of awesome boss fights.
With all that said though, when I finished playing my first thought was basically "Alright, that was fun! Time to get back to the main series."
The main series just has a charm that I feel DmC was sorely lacking, particularly compared to 3, 4, and now 5. I'm pretty sure you'll get it too once you have the chance to play those.

Devil May Cry 4 was my first (and I loved it), and I didn’t get to DmC until I played 1, 2, and 3 first. I’m saying this because most of the time when someone likes DmC, the usual assertion is “wElL yOu HaVeNt PlAyEd ThE rEaL dMc GaMeS”. Welp...I freaking love DmC. I love pretty much every game in the series (except 2, and even then I don’t hate 2).

Yea DMC4 is the only DMC ive played, because I dont have consoles. And it was surprisingly good. The gameplay is very good, the boss fight is very good, and the cinematic is very entertaining. Even the story is fleshed out. Its starts with a bang too, making Dante looks like a bad guy. And it turns out that Dante is very funny, and he likes to play, yet cared for his fellow companion. Dante is so cool on DMC4. Then emo DMC came out, saw emo Dante, watch the trailer and review, and decide not to touch this game because of emo Dante. Will buy DMC5, just waiting for DMC5 prices to come down to my price range.

Been binging your DMC series and really enjoying it.
I remember finding out that in DMC1 if you hit R2 Dante does a taunt and if you are near an enemy it gives you a chunk of free DT as a reward for the risk of being cheeky which I found both hillarious and helpful.
As the series has evolved that remained with *most* of them but over time it became less about the DT reward and more about the feeling of actually WANTING to be a cocky dickhead to an enemy you just laid an epic beatdown on and the amazing feeling it gave you when you got away with it.
That's something I felt this game was missing. Something that doesn't sound like a big deal but it kind of is to a lot of fans.

I didn't have a lot of problems with DmC's story, but the combat mechanics killed it for me. There wasn't a manual targeting system, so it was confusing as heck trying to do even a simple Stinger since the game kept disagreeing with me on which enemy to lock on to, and whether it allowed me to do the moves I wanted to do. The Angel/Devil mode was an interesting addition to combat, it looked like a great way to switch around on the fly during combos, but then color-coded enemies requiring specific modes to damage defeated that very purpose of 'constant weapon switching for sick combos'. It was just so restricted and so dumb, instead of giving players more power, they took away the good stuffs and locked us down.

DmC was too obvious with its modern messages in terms of story. It's like "Wow, consumerism is shallow, capitalism is making people slaves to corporations. See!? I'm so egdy and intelligent to see through it". No kidding man. It's just narrative of obviousness to the point of autoparody which doesn't add any substantive thougths about what we already know. The main reason "fans" don't like DmC: Devil May Cry is because of Capcom's bad decisions. No, unlike most fans think, Ninja Theory is not responsible for all the hate they get.
NT is a talented studio that actually likes the DMC games, so when Capcom offered them the opportunity to make a game of that franchise, they were very pleased. At first, NT wanted to create a game much more thaithful to the originals, but Capcom didn't. They wanted to westernize the franchise because they thought the japanese culture influences was what kept it from being more popular (which is false) so they wanted the game to be as far as possible from the originals. Most decisions like Dante smoking, or Dante being sex addict came from Capcom, for exemple. Seing that most of these "ideas" were... badly received (to say the least), they doubled back on multiple occasions. That lead to a pretty inconsistant and uneven game, were a lot of re-written things don't match up with the original idea.
Capcom is the only responsible for this. NT just did what they were told to. Hideaki Itsuno (DMC3,DMC4 and DMC5's director) had to make sure of that as he was a supervisor on the game.
So all things considered, the game is not that bad, like, at all. It's a pretty solid action game. And even Itsuno liked it. He even said that if he would've prefered make a DmC 2 rather than DMC5.
The only issue, considering the mess DmC is, was to actually call it DmC: Devil May Cry. Not only that name is pretty stupid, but it got to a point were the only things the game has in common with the original DMCs are the characters names. This makes it suffers even more than its idiotic decisions, and it got more or less the same fate than PREY (2017): a great game with very nice ideas in it, but people hated it without even trying to understand why, just because it took the name of a game that a lot of people (including me) were expecting (but got canceled), and for no reason, considering it doesn't have anything to do with the original franchise. I admit that at first I hated PREY (2017) but now... it's just one of my favorite games. I love it even more than the 2006's series. The thing is that I still wouldn't have said no to Prey 2 (and it looked amazing). In the same way, I would've liked another DmC: Devil May Cry, with more refined ideas and more consistent plot.
Both "visions" could've existed side by side, and would've loved to.
But bad decisions can destroy wonderful ideas.

    • @OmegaEnvych
      @OmegaEnvych 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Wow, this is actually good comment here. Personally I, even being a fan of older games, never hated dmc and actually loved its gameplay and genuenly better level design (which IMO was weakest point of all DMC titles - levels were bland and boring for the most part, with couple of memorable locations sprinkled between boring ones.) with actually vibrant colors and cool ideas. I didn't find combat that much worse than in DMC 3 or 4 . Of course with DMC 5 existing this reboot can't do anything - DMC5 has probably best combat system in the series. And I even liked the ideas like color-coded enemies even though I understand they weren't done that well, I could see good intention behind them - probably on paper devs wanted to make that some enemies will be fighting in groups and player would have to either change his weapons or properly pick targets in combat.
No developer wants to make a bad game, and I'm pretty sure that NT wanted to make best Devil May Cry game ever but considering we are talking about Capcom, I'm not surprised that many players were disappointed.

This game is so much better than people want to give it credit for. I totally understand the dislike of the change in tone and the fact it was a “reboot” at the time and abandoned the original timeline, but in it’s own right - the gameplay is fantastic and I found the new take on the lore very interesting. I honestly find this to be my 3rd favorite behind 5 and 3.

While I've been a fan of Devil May Cry since the first game, I was never that good at actually playing them. I never learned too many of the advanced techniques that the pros use and stuff like that, so when it comes to the gameplay, I don't have that much to say other than what you said yourself.
But the big sticking-point to me, and a lot of fans both before and after the release, was the story and the characterisation. Both the developer and the media made a big deal about the story, how it was "mature" and talked about "real world issues" unlike those "childish" and "corny" original games, but then the game came out and it was all a bunch of "wake up sheeple", "corperations are literally the devil"-stuff that had been done way better in films like They Live, but with a layer of wannabe-edge that made the whole thing just cringy. DMC never had deep or complex stories, but 3 and 4 had simple stories that felt genuinly heartfelt, with strong character-moments and clear and relatable themes. The "teen angst, but made by people in their 30's"-style of the reboot just felt hollow in comparison, and the way the lead developer and the media talked shit about the OG-games and their fans leading up to the release of the games just made it worse.
It's the same with the characters. Dante was always kind of a wise-craking asshole, but he was a loveable asshole. While the developers didn't find the right balance until 3, the general idea was that he was a guy who genuinly liked what he was doing, and talked smack to the bosses and enemies hopeing to get a good fight. Reboot-Dante (Donte) just feels like an asshole who dosen't enjoy or care about anything. Shure, learning to care is part of his arc, but that means he's an asshole for most of the game, and his development dosen't really feel natural or believable. It's also centered around Kat, an incredibly flat character that rivals Kyrie from 4 as a boring damsel in distress, who was supposed to be an "improvement" compared to the series "problematic" portrayal of women in earlier games, but ended up being a worse stereotype than DMC had ever had. :P
But worst of all was Vergil, who was transformed from an interesting and honorable character driven by tragedy to obtain power at the cost of his humanity, to a weeb hacker with an actual fedora, who shoots women in the back with no hesitation. The fight he and Dante have at the end also makes little sense in the narrative and is only there because the fights with Vergil where some of the best moments in 3, and the devs wanted to copy that, even if it makes the characters look dumb.
So yeah, the reboot is a fine game gameplay-wise and a solid introduction to character-action, but the story is silly on its own, but insulting when viewed in the context that the developers and the media created for it. Sorry about the long comment, but I care too much about the story and characters in these silly action-games. XD Great video man, and I look foreward to seeing more from you. :)

It's refreshing to hear someone talking positively about DmC. As a big fan of both the series and of Ninja Theory, I had a lot of fun with it and honestly think it has some of the best boss fights in the entire franchise. It's clearly no DMC3, but I've never really understood the hate - silly, awkward over-the-top goofiness is what the series does best.

    • @MinhLe-cf5nt
      @MinhLe-cf5nt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Most of DmC bosses are way too restrictive compare to mainline after 3 IMO. Let's take...Bob Barbas and Cerberus. Bob requires you to dodge color walls then hit the button before you can damage him, then you enter the camera mob fight. It breaks the flow and feels more like a puzzle. Meanwhile, in Cerberus fight, you have to fight him and avoid his attacks at the same time, which allows for smoother flow and higher skill ceiling. They're both giant and relatively immobile bosses (until Cerberus change phase ofc) but the difference in approach changes the experience a lot.

    • @AverageJoeVideoGames
      @AverageJoeVideoGames 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Minh Lê Honestly I was mostly referring to the thematic, visual and narrative style of the bosses, since I consider Barbas and Mundus’ Spawn in particular to be far more memorable than 95% of the random demon fights in the other games. Mechanically, I see your point but I think that’s more of a subjective thing. A different style of boss isn’t necessarily a bad boss. It’s worth noting that I’m more of a one-and-done sort of player though, so for people who play the boss fights over and over again the experience is probably very different.

Nice review. I think my overall feelings for this game was that it was pretty decent in looks and
gameplay and I can still go back to it from time to time. Though I feel like it would have been an advantage to be its own game and not tied to the DMC name due to feeling like it missed a lot of what made the
    previous games appealing.
    Pros
    Stylish meter announcement voice
Slow-mo cam when last enemy is killed
Holding down the triggers for weapon switching was kind of good
Being able to parry many enemy attacks
Dante having a grapple hook was useful
Being able to try moves and view video demos for them
Limbo and its visuals were really well done
Vergil DLC although short at least wasn't just playing through Dante's levels
    Cons
    No styles
    No hard lock on
    Ruined Devil Trigger
Majority of bosses feel way to static and just stick to their allocated spot
Having to double tap forward to perform dash moves
Launch moves having a dedicated button (O/B could have been put to better use)
    Colour coded enemies
I wasn't feeling the "Wake up people! Our society is run by demons!" plot line they went for
Didn't like the new personalities for characters:
Dante: was still cocky like the old games but came off more unlikable
Vergil: went from being a cold and solitary warrior to somebody who can't seem to function
without Dante there to help him. Can't even take him seriously as a final boss because the game constantly shows how much weaker he is than Dante.
Kat: was fine but I hated the fact that she couldn't fend for herself when most DMC
    girls are combatants
I know many cons were fixed in the special edition but I bought the first version when it came
out so the cons still stand for me

i was super excited to see it on the shelves back then, coming back from DMC3. never bothered with DMC4, looked and felt really stiff and stupid when I tried it. This is super refreshing and I still get back to it in the Definitive Edition that eliminated its few flaws. Fanboys of DMC5 owe a lot more to this game than they will ever admit anyway ;)

@@ghostofthesun89 Itsuno himself said he liked this game and borrowed ideas when making dmc5 so idk what you're trying to implie with that last line. He showed some love to DmC in DMC5, in vergils final fight with dante having call backs to lines donte says and even having vergil pull out the doppelganger ability. I don't hear any DMC fans whining about donte references in 5, most fans just let DmC be its own thing why you gotta be so defensive.

@@ghostofthesun89 there's a world of difference between "reference" and "tribute". I think you're confusing the two. References may be fun regardless, tributes can be so out of place they are straight cringy.
